My wife and I visited Shetland for a week in August of 2023. We took the Northlink ferry from Aberdeen. It was like a mini-cruise. We actually had James Tait as our guide for a day! He's such a knowledgeable and amiable person. We also spent an afternoon with David and Isla at the Shetland Rural Experience. They were such warm and friendly hosts. We later went to Papa Stour Island with Captain John Anderson of Simmer Dim tours. All we can say is that Shetland does not disappoint! The people are so friendly, and all of the guides and tours went over and above to make our time there unforgettable. One thing that they don't mention in this video is that you can actually rent the Light Keeper's Cottage at Sumburgh Head, which is what we did! Talk about amazing accommodations. It was a once-in-a-lifetime trip! We love Shetland.

We named our two puppies from Lilongwe in Malawi, Muckle Flugga !

Seeing the spectacular views of the precipitous cliffs everywhere with no safety fences I presume that Shetlanders and visitors frequently fall off them, thus explaining the relatively small size of the population.

I lived and worked in Shetland in the early 1990s and I returned frequently throughout that decade for holidays. This year was my first visit back to the islands in over twenty years, and it reminded me immediately why I miss the place so much. The folk in this video are absoulety right about Shetland getting into your soul, and how hard it is to leave. Already booked my holiday here for 2024!

Often is the case. Pple come for a few weeks and don't leave. Then u get the ones who just plain hate it. As Prince used to say about the cold where he stayed 'keeps the bad pple away'. Glad this was filmed prior to wind farm which has just ruined the central mainland. This shld have gone to caithness not to small island like this. What about all the migrating birds who will be killed by the blades? For a place renowned for birds, unbelievable they've done this.
agree, the wind farm is disgusting.
Highest sustained average wind speeds I believe, but I am sure cost of land has something to do with it too. Money rules.

Flat barren peat land. Not so reliant on tourism, bird watchers etc as shetland is. Not a small area to be so obviously destroyed. I saw a documentary lately on the amount of songbirds killed in one night in chicago cos they flew into a glass building, 1000!! A statistical record from 2014 showed a billion birds killed migrating in usa alone. Imagine what it is like worldwide it's incredible there's any left at all. We r fishing the seas empty for them and other fish. We r heating up the oceans as well as icebergs melt desalinating the water.
I am sad to hear about the wind farm,it will kill a lot of birds.I lived in the Shetlands for nearly 4 years and I loved it
Wind farms are the worst… bird killers, noisy, and not an efficient way to make electricity.
I left a comment about tree planting projects, hoping that Kate might have touched on that. Seems to have been taken down 😢
I go twice a year, a month in May/June and a month September/October have been doing that for many years and still look forward to returning again in May 2024 - for five weeks 🙂 Usually spend two weeks on Unst and the other two on the mainland. Visit for as long as you can, its a small area on the map but huge when you get there.
It’s an incredibly beautiful place and the historical remains of human occupation are amazing. I hope to visit one day!
In year 2000 I visited Shetland on me own. Me wife stayed at home in Stockholm. Among many other things of wonderful experiences was the fact that I met a beautiful, smart, funny and lokal danceteacher. Though nothing realy happend I was crying al the way back to Bergen with the ferry.😊 It was however a wonderful week and I will carry Shetland i me hart as long as I live.❤️

Just got back from spending 6 weeks up there September and October my 4th visit
I knew the guy who was killed on the A38 a few years ago who used to be a teacher in Shetland, he was my music teacher at a special needs school in the 90s. The thing was he was killed right near where I used to live. He was called Ian Perry. I only found out when I looked him up! RIP Mr' Perry, you'll be missed!

I holidayed in Shetland May 23, it gets into your soul, by far my best holiday, so diverse, steeped in history. Being from Wales it took awhile to get used to no trees, which now I realise sets off Shetland’s beauty. Planning to go back, Fair Isle next on my list. If you visit take binoculars, wildlife is spectacular.
Tree's spoil the view LOL....Albertan's say that here in British Columbia.....as we have so many trees and valleys.

Love this promo of Shetland ❤ beautiful presentation, like go go Shetland now…. But will do later, think Unst is my favorite, looking for viking heritage. I also live on island community in Norway (but connected to mainland with a bridge) with the Atlantic Ocean as neighbor, so feel familiar with the plenty of space and few human beings 🥰
Have you ever visited? you're more than welcome here! you'll feel right at home i'm sure, especially with Shetlands close ties to Norway, for seeing anything viking related Unst is for sure the best!
On our list for our next holidays in 2025 - we go away every 2 yrs......looking forward to it, so watching everything I can find....think I will invest in some good walking shoes/boots too

Such a great video with a great presenter. Really captures some of the reasons why Shetland is such a special place. Lucky enough to have taken 7 group trips there this year, 2 more to go. I am adding this video to the list of things I send to guests as a reminder of their trip.
What a beautiful video! I have been interested in Shetland after reading Ann Cleeves wonderful Shetland series, and then the tv series. I would love to walk that landscape with its teeming wildlife and big, big skies!

This place looks beautiful, but it is too cold for the taste of a Brazilian accustomed to temperatures between 20° and 40° Celsius.

I do have a question... In the old maps of Shetland OS25 inch map 1892... Clickimin Loch was called Loch of Clickhimin.
Why was the 'H' dropped?
Anglicising, can't leave colloquial language alone. Nowadays they can't leave any word alone.
Loch is a Scots name not a Viking one. Named by the invader Scots

Depends on how much you wish to spend. RSPB own brand bins are good value for money.

I used to live in shetland, my sheep were stolen, my storage barn broken into by thieves, the people were pi55 takers (not all) and i could`nt wait to move away. France is so much better.
