- Malta ranked among worst countries for Expats! Malta retained its spot with the worst 10 places for people living and working abroad, in a survey which up until six years ago hailed the island among the countries most preferred by foreign workers.
For thos planing on moving to Malta, its better to do a deep research to understand whether Malta is still a good option for you or no.
Expats in Malta are especially disappointed with the quality of life and the environment, including the transport infrastructure. In 2020, the InterNations’ survey focused on “sustainable expats”, with Malta first entering the ranking for the worst 10 countries. That year, it placed 52nd out of 60 countries.
In 2021, Malta placed 50 overall, out of 59 countries ranked from best to worst places for expats, and last year, the island remained with the bottom 10 at 43rd out of 52 countries.

People are saying it's tough living in Malta trust me it's harder in London. I left London to live in Malta I work full time with half the hours that I was doing in London and I'm only earning 300 less than what I was getting in my job back in London. I now get to enjoy more time to do the things that I love and the weather is always fantastic, the only issue I have come so far which is annoying is parking apart from that not much to moan about

@@cinderellarouge That works both ways! I know many Maltese people in London, where I am from. When they arrived and found work whose place were they taking? Would you object to that? Malta is a member of the EU. It has open borders. That means free open migration for any EU citizen. If you do not like it then start a campaign for ‘Mexit’.

I am Maltese and I am overall satisfied with my life in Malta. I have a salary in the range of 3-4k (net), but to he honest i dont know how i would be able to live if I earned a third of what I do, which is what the majority of the workforce on the island earns.
I currently live in the 3 cities and soon moving to an even quiter location in the west of Malta, and I'd rather chew my arm off than live in Sliema, Mosta, Msida, Gzira or any of the construction-ridden places.
The traffic is what it is. To be honest, I think traffic in Malta is exaggerated most of the time. I've driven in urban areas even in supposed expat nirvanas like Portugal, and once you hit the urban areas, you find traffic most of the time. My opinion - if traffic is your biggest problem, then you really don't have many problems!
Nonetheless, it seems that the government at the moment seems to be asleep and not be willing to address the many disgruntlements, locals and expats alike, have.

@@rygneisanau1724 I don't know what to say regarding property. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it more expensive than anywhere else? I don't think so.
I've seen 72sqm apartments advertised for 400k in Prague, in Nice you don't find anything less than a million euros, in Porto the prices are pretty much at par with here from what I've seen.
I've seen much cheaper property in Greece for example, but then I don't exactly see people flocking to Greece for jobs.
In the end, property prices is something the market dictates. If the prices are what they are it's because enough people are willing to pay it.

Nice is just another universe, which is not right to compare. And it's not the place to buy a property for an average middle class.
There 4 times more digital nomads in Greece compared to Malta.
Malta is the best destination for a cheap labor from 3d world countries, because of the corruption and easiness to get here compared to other EU countries.

As for digital nomads, it does not compose the majority of the working population in the world. It also means that the country you inhabit is not the one providing you with the income and that you have the luxury to work from anywhere.
Far from trying to cover up Malta's flaws, but contrary to popular belief, Malta is neither the worst country in Europe, nor is it the one with the worst salaries - I'd say it's rather mid in most things - so you can't expect it to be the cheapest.
I'm of the strong belief that Malta's minimum wage should be increased - mind you I have employer friends who struggle to find anyone to work for them for less than 7 euro an hour - at most, for 6 euro an hour you'll find someone who just wants a foot in the door - so I wonder who is really on 800 euro a month (4.60/hr) nowadays.

I’m sorry for the Maltese people. I know what Malta used to be like back when it was Maltese. I don’t think there was even a mall when I lived there, only small family-owned businesses. It was charming and delightful. Now…. now it’s overrun with people, cars, cranes, hotels, etc. “Progress” is not always good.
Being Irish, perhaps like the Maltese people feel about Malta, I feel the same way about the current situation in my native Ireland, where I have extended family in Rural Ireland and have lived 21 years in the U.K. - Covid has massively changed so many things in our world and sadly, I see some very tough times ahead for all of us going forward

Maybe charming, but if I see what all these small shops "family businesses" want or take, I highly prefer malls or Lidl. I live in a small village on Malta and we have only a store like that, really charming, but you pay 50-100% more on any item, comparing to the big stores.
Malta needs to find a new way to strive more into economy, build on the layout of Malta and connecting their history, tourism and entertainmentvenues to mid-range services which work. Also Gozo is like what you describe, what if we get Gozo and Malta connected and people can see where they wanna live. Maybe there is a way to live on gozo and go to work within 20min on Malta, but that needs time :)
How do they justify all of the development given the lack of water, which is only getting worse with climate change?

Good to know. Malta is overpopulated - because of foreigners coming to Malta to work, salaries have remained miserable and rent for residence has become expensive. Therefore I hope ex-pats will avoid coming to Malta to work, maybe we Maltese will benefit from an increase in our salaries and the rent for the residence will become reasonable.
I hope expats get all their taxes back as well as the cost of work permit

Hi Alex - thank you very much for posting this very interesting video about Malta - although I’ve lived 21 years in Manchester U.K., I’ve got family in Rural Ireland and the similarities between the Irish situation and that in Malta are quite interesting - when I go home to Ireland on visits, I find Dublin incredibly expensive and the same is true of property prices in Dublin
I am Maltese and happy of living here. All this criticism and we have foreigners that come to live here from all of the world, because this country is the place of opportunities.I know foreigners that have good jobs here that tnow they are not renting, but paying the loan on the property they bought. Can you tell me why they choose to buy their home here and not buying in Sicicly from were they come from? Foreigners the same like us have the same health services for free. Free transport, fuel and electricity bills subsidised among the cheapest in EU countries. And can you name a country that is not having power cuts with this heatwave? I am not saying that Malta is heaven on earth but many other good things are not mentioned.
My homeland, Macedonia, for instance, doesn't have power cuts at all. Almost never. Don't get me wrong, I used to love Malta before it changed completely.

I spend half the year in Malta & the other half in the UK & I'm happier when in Malta hands down...one of the BIG things for me is that over there everything doesn't shut down come 4 o'clock even in the winter so I can have a stroll to the shops or go & have a coffee & the streets are not dead & I can bump into people for a little chat! My father's Maltese & one of his friends decided not to go back to his home land of Malta for his retirement & stay put in London where his body wasn't found for 2 weeks!! So we are at the moment here in the UK.. where believe me they have a LOT of problems too!! & traffic!!

It's a pity because Malta is beautiful as a country but living is far worse than when you visit the island for a short time. From my experience, I can say so.

Moved to Malta from Canada, and I'm honestly suprised to learn Malta ranks so low.
Current heat-wave aside, my quality of life in Mellieha is higher than back home.
I’ve only been to Malta 4 times, planning my 5th visit later this year, but I’ve noticed over those visits, before and after the pandemic the changes.
I think anyone who moves to Malta MUST uphold the Maltese traditions.
Learn the languages, both English and Maltese.
Respect the Maltese people and their country, don’t try to turn it into the country you left.
Stop complaining! If you don’t like it, then leave.
Malta is a rare gem of a place, it’s so unique and so beautiful. The Maltese people are amongst the friendliest I’ve ever met. The food is amazing. The architecture is outstanding. The way of life is laid back and relaxed and as an Aussie I appreciate that.
Yes, the govt still has improvements to make, but that’ll happen, in time.
I’d love to live in Malta, but it’s not possible right now, so I just keep visiting….but if I ever do move some day, from day one I’ll count myself as Maltese and throw myself into the community. I won’t expect the community to change a single thing for me!

Malta offers great food, warm people, sunny weather, stunning views , lots of festivals and fireworks at 8am. And same time Malta is not ready to step into digital world talking about banking system, paperless and queueless services and cashless payments. Nothing to say more.🤷♂

The government is to blame they make the laws . And should if something is not working should change it. Lets see what Malta is like at the next election.
Talking out of a flower vase. What do you know about local politics? Something you heard in a cafeteria maybe or read on the social media. As an EU member state, all EU nationals have freedom of movement and come here without any restrictions. With them we are also told by foreign ngos like Alarmphone to take in immigrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa, etc. By the way, laws are enacted through parliament. Just saying.

Once foreigners move to island or small cities, the quality of life will degrade for locals, inflation, cost of living and so forth will rise and become tourists trap and the local will have to pay the price of it. I think every city or town or Island gotto know their limitation.
That's a one sided view. Foreigners are not the problem, it's the government incompetency

My family on both sides are maltese and it will always be my second home and one day I will make it my first home again xx
People, who don't like being in Malta, just simply not leaving cause they don't have any other options in most of the cases.
And the reason why they don't like the country, has nothing to do with the traditions or local people. Who are very friendly and supportive in general.

I live in gozo my father's from gozo my mother English. I'm seeing changes slowly even the crime is slowly going up. I remember when we left keys in doors and cars also lots of people sat out at night although they still do it was alot more. Even woman doing the lace outside there houses and knitting. Although some traditions are still on going but I wonder how long for as there is to many foreigners ere which is changing things slowly but the country is allowing it and outsiders are taking full advantage to better there lives which u can't blame them, but the numbers need to b kept minimum
I can only say, been in Malta for summer holiday last year with my partner and i can only say- yes positive things as we enjoyed and myself.Yes as tourist you can't see much but I met you Alex and we talked about life in Malta,etc..People SHOULD understand that everywhere is different and in the world we are living, life is more expensive then it was +15yrs back..Those who are saying that us-foreigners people "taking" take jobs,etc..should just stay in their house and keep living on social (gov.support) money.I personally think, with no any foreign person/people economy and jobs wouldn't grow so much faster then without them.
As example i can use Ireland🇮🇪. Live in Ireland for over 8 years( I'm from Croatia🇭🇷) and economy is so high since foreign people*include myself start coming, and more jobs opportunitys are here for ALL PEOPLE. Life in Ireland is very expensive but at same time people with good earning still struggle and made their way of positivity..
Sadly, people should just accept expensive life and there is no point to cry over it and "blame" Malta that is one of the worse countrys to live in.Malta is beautiful, over 300days of ☀️🌤, more and more positive things. Living here in Ireland with summer that last max 3-5 weeks with no rain it's short summer, still can't get used to it😂..

We spent a full month on Gozo in January… we rented a car, but we stopped driving after 3 days, and returned the car.
We used Uber and Bolt to go everywhere for the rest of the time there. The road infrastructure was not good at all, plus driving in the left side of the road meant driving is best left to locals to navigate. Congestion in the cities, and two way driving in single lane roads on small towns (plus random parked cars) was not good. Not safe to bike anywhere, in my opinion.

I came to Malta in July i was surprised that it was hard to find the accommodation and agent scammers are there and our company is not supported to find accommodation or provide until we settle why I mentioned this we are coming from third country we don't know anything there and atleast employer should take care of this basic needs
I got one room which is full of cockroaches and dirty wash rooms and even in the kitchen cockroaches are running on prepared food

The best place to live will be always our mother country. Any country has specifics issues and circumstances that will make you fall in love or hate! It's a personal perspective. For each one could be different. So, we need to get use with the place where we are living currently and become it in our heaven.... With no good expectations the result should be build ourselves. So, you will be responsible for your happiness!

Alex your Malta videos are insightful. As an expatriate and former business owner in Malta until a year or so following entry into the European Union, our problem became difficult with the EU regs. My observation at the time was that Malta had overnight become overwhelmed by refugees who were already becoming a drain on a tiny Maltese infrastructure, culture, and society. It was time to leave a beautiful island and lovely people, already overwhelmed by the influx. God only knows what it is like in 2023!😪
May I correct you as a Malteser, it is not the refugees who are draining our island, it is the contractors who are building every sh** hole in order to make quick bucks. They need third country nationals so as to pay as low a wage as possible and they are taking advantage of them in all and every sense. These third country nationals are lured here by false ads saying that you can make a lot of money here until they come here and discover that there is another tale to the story. They have nearly no rights and have to pay high rents and live about 10 in a two bedroom apartment as they can't afford otherwise. The truth is that third country nationals are being exploited by the contractors and in the hotel industry for a pittance.

I came back recently and was impressed by the number of Indians on the island. I have nothing against them but I am amazed how easy it seems to be to immigrate here for anyone despite the overpopulation.
If you want to live in a country with UK prices , wages of Thailand , traffic and chaos on the roads, noise polution , construction works , overcrowdedness and dirtiness of India , non existence of free public areas ( parks , sport facilities , etc. ) ...Malta should be your top destination to move in .

Well, it depends on where you are from. I visited Malta from Australia and to me the description you provided is pretty accurate. I'd never move there as an expat. But that's because the place I come from is just the opposite: not overcrowded, very clean, no pollution, many beautiful free parks, high wages, etc. For someone coming from say India, Malta would probably be a better place to live.

The government of Malta must pass and set the rules for minimum wages if they are inviting foreigners to work there. This way the foreigners workers may not suffer.
Why should they do that just because foreigners are here. They should increase wages because locals are suffering not just to attract foreigners
@@QuillOfTheIsles2199 Daniel of the Bible used to have concern for others as Alex also has concern for foreigners . One good citizen always want proper rules set for spats as well as for native people. If the wages is increased for foreigner workers then will work properly and give quality and better service to the country where they are. Hence I believe the movement of Mr Alex, he feels the pain of foreign workers. Therefore every good citizen of country will love to other country fellow. If the rules are set by government to pay proper salaries and working hours to the foreign workers then no one will be exploited.
Be careful what wish for with for in most countries that have minmum wage it applies to all employers and employees. You will always get employers trying to beat the system.
@@leeklass3907 For example caregiver/nurse recruited in ISRAEL 🇮🇱 and paid what government has given the notice/assigned to be paid to the employees. Employers are bound to the laws of country to pay to the foreign workers and justified. Human must be treated as human.
@@Daddywithkids In my country the tax authority when they audit companies accounts that the employees are being paid the minimum wage and the companies get named & shamed that don't well as being fined having to pay the correct salaries of the employees
Over crowded is the main problem of Malta. The government must control the immigration from non EU people in order to get into track. This is my personal opinion.

There are too many foreigners, it's true, but it's positive for Maltese because Maltese would never work in hospitality or in a restaurant, for example (these jobs are not well paid). When you hire foreign people for, for instance, 4 € a hour, I'm sorry, but you can't complain

The worst country to live is Australia You pay a fee yearly if you own a property, you pay for garbage collection, university, buses , tolls to use the road, childcare and more. The Maltese don't know how good they have got it.
I was living in Tokyo (Japan), To be honest I had no option but to comeback to Malta. Honestly I miss Japan. Malta is way way backwards. The island is small, small mindedness and low opportunity for growth. Japan Tokyo was great. Im studying and I hope to leave Malta in a few months time. (I am Maltese)
Not everyone can afford to buy a flat, what If I want a house not a flat? What about mountains, and cosmopolitan life?

Now Malta you have to work 6days per week for 8 to 10 hrs per day for 6,7 € per hour gross
Malta cannot take it anymore. Now we have a failed infrastructure system - water and power cuts, soapy sea which sometimes stinks of drainage, roads jammed with too many cars, over development and the list goes on. I want the Malta I once had back. Malta is for the Maltese. The rest can come to visit and leave. That is how it was and that is how it should be. We are too small to have you all.

If Malta does not desire foreigners to settle in Malta why did it join the EU ?
I am applying for the immigration program as a non EU citizen. Going to spend a lot of money my family and me saved, and not sure if I am going to move to Malta now since I can earn a salary that is equal to 2000 Euros in my own country.
What is your home country? If you are earning 2000 EUR that's probably not enough to live a comfortable worry-free life in Malta for a family.

dont come -- locals are struggling with rubbish, services , traffic, wages , public transport , rent , everybody is ending up angry and stressed. --- all because of the overpopulation and greed madness . Malta was a peaceful island before , not anymore . this land and its culture are ruined ...i am not writing this out of hate or racism but the size of the island and the number of people here is enough to make you think twice i think. I do get it , people move and travel but we are way too small to accommodate all these people . Its getting very very difficult to even breath !!
What you say etnica is the reason I'm not coming for my 9th trip in October. I love the island and the people but follow malta today news and the times and so on and the building, overpopulation the lot are just too much for the maltese. The carrying capacity I hear they call it re hotels (allowing for 80% bookings) would need the island to have to deal with 5 million tourists. That is crazy and a doubling of current numbers. People need space and you guys are going to go insane if this constant development, tourism and immigration continues. I love the people of the island too much to visit again. I don't want to be part of the problem.

I am a Key Employee Initiative, with a salary of around 3k3(Net) per month, and from non-EU countries.
I just think it is not enough if my wife and my daughter come here when my reunification is approved.
The house/ apartment is so expensive with my salary, how can I save and buy the house with the price of 300k.
Please go elsewhere, it will always be better off for the future of your family. Don't stay on this island, it is doomed!

To many whingers through Malta has it's problems like inflation and infrastructure no denying that , but there's a reason why people come to Malta for work otherwise they wouldn't come it must be better then there previous employment. Alex public transport is very reliable peake season in any nation in Europe will be busy. As for being safe and crime in Malta I don't believe those figures Malta is very safe compared to other nations and still very peaceful. Obviously there's room for improvement.
Very True. You need to have at least 2k net salary for survival. To get an accommodation, grocery , other expense like bills , transport if u take a cab, private doctor fee, medicines and many more. If you are earning less than 2k need to make friends so that you can share the apartment.
Because I have Malta on my top destination list, I subscribed to a newsletter weblink in Malta for updates on daily happenings over there. I noticed that a recent issue in Malta is power cut out that has been occuring for some time now and I am a bit confused.
You see one major reason why I want to leave my country is because of erratic power supply and days of black-outs in major cities with low wifi speed but we have generators, solar panels and inverters as alternatives although fuel price is ridiculously high now
Please Alex, what is the state of electricity cut outs in Malta?
Is the whole island highly affected? If yes, how are you coping? I read from other channels that due to the cut-outs, pipe-borne water supply is affected, food storage in refrigerators, waste is littered in high piles along certain streets, rodent invasion etc. Is your province or residential area without electricity for a while now?
If yes, what are the energy options you people have transitioned to until the problem is resolved?
Knowing how hard is it to raise money in my country to travel for a better life elsewhere. The exchange rate and other factors, do you still recommend that we come to study or finally relocate to Malta or are there residences there that enjoy uninterrupted government-generated electricity come rain come shine
And what is the average accomodation rent in those areas. Or can you do a video on this issue.

Hi , the power cut we had was in summer in a heatwave. We spent weeks on and off without electricity. The authorities said it was because of the heat but the reality is the overpopulation - the demand . Our infrastructure cannot cope with all these ppl. This goverment ruined our once beautiful and peacfull island. Do your howework very well if you are planning to come -- rents are high 800EUr plus for a decent place , more in central areas. The traffic is a huge proplem , the noise polution , contstant construction, crimiality , .Check times of malta for daily news. I dont know what you are looking for but i am sure there are better places to go. We honeslty are way too much people and its not fair on the Maltese either , foreigners come and go but this is our home - authorities ruined it for money. Maltese cannot find jobs , rents are high expecially for families and suicides are on the rise.do you homework very well. I wish you luck

I am always of the belief that whoever does these types of surveys be it one person or a survey company if they actually visit the places or if there is a hidden agenda, or do they go on the hearsay of some disgruntled individual or group. There is no perfect country now in the world. Population increase due to migration, climate change & attitudes play a huge part in changes in a country. No one can say because of migration that a country has changed for the worse. With more people migrating, business increases & a lot of industries make money & a few don’t. It’s just human nature that locals blame foreigners or outsiders & Malta is no different than any other country & tolerance & attitudes must change & people must be open to ideas rather than having tunnel vision. Every country has its good & not so good points. Sorry to keep harping on the last video where this incredible person Colin was offering to help people & not expecting anything in return. The world would be a better place if we had more people like him.

Alex but to be honest there are a lot of people from South America doing bad stuff like getting the ID paying 1000 euros and not paying taxes same as Asian nationalities and I think the people from other countries are destroying countries like this one with that stuff
Well, I was supposed to be in Malta now if my visa application have not been rejected after going through all the process. It almost took 21 months of my life from the day I gave my interview and got hired but later I realised that all the Malta High Commission wanted was MONEY. I lost altogether €1400and more importantly my precious 2years of my life waiting... Since the refusal, I have been seeing similar downfall news from Europe especially Malta. Now I think it was better that I got rejected...

I lived in Malta 2008-2009 and then went back in 2017, I saw and experienced a different Malta. I had a good job at Betsson, but went back to Sweden after 6 months, so I totally understand there opinions...
However, Malta will always have a big place in my heart...

I moved here a year and a half ago and rent upper level places and I can say that Malta is a horrible place to live. It’s corrupt, noisy, dirty, unfriendly, horrible traffic, horrible driving and really bad food. Can’t wait to leave for a more civilised country.

I was a tourist in Malta and I was in awe how beautiful it was everywhere you looked. Yes, the island looks overbuilt and overcrowded, but there is a reason: people want to live there. It seems safe and friendly. Like anywhere, if you aren't reasonably wealthy, lets say living on 2,500 Euros a month or more, it won't be as enjoyable to live there.
It’s mostly the government fault for poor planing making unattractive long building designs, not including enough green spaces in cities streets, and poor transportation buses with not enough road space for cars or even to build a trams so ppl will use less cars
@@bloomy27 i agree... they should built many more high rises, and free up some space for some small parks. it's a difficult place to plan: small and congested, and highly desirable to live in. eventually, the traffic will be so bad, it will just be a big parking lot.
@@bloomy27 No, everyone wanna live in the central area, 80% live there.. if you guys want malta to become nice, you should start to talk about the infrastructure change we really need. Malta could feel completely different, if we just get the 700k people on all islands, in all areas, making new centers, its all possible, but not if over 80% sit in the North-East

I came here 6 months ago, I honestly did not expect so much xenophobia, racism and divide between locals and foreigners. I understand why maltese people are angry, it's a shame that this beautiful island is so urbanized and there is ongoing construction everywhere, but that's governments responsibility and they obviously do not care about their own people, just about the profit, which is so sad. Also, as a foreigner living on Malta I am trying to focus on positive things, I am learning about maltese history, about lifestyle here, trying to learn the language, just out of respect for the locals. I think that people should come together and try to find middle ground, to learn how to live together, help each other and that's the only way to make some progress (financially, personally, ...) It's natural that people migrate from one county to another, that has been happening for milenia, no one can stop that, people just want better life for themselves and their families. Some people fled wars, some bad governments and economies, and I think we all just need little more empathy. I love your videos! Srdacan pozdrav!😊

@@QuillOfTheIsles2199 Yeah, I get your confusion, I would probably wonder the same. :) We honestly did not know much about life here, how densely populated the Malta is, everything i learned about Malta was through Eurovision and I loved the idea. My husband is an expert in his field and a friend called him to come and work here, as they could not find anyone with that experience. :) Malta was not in our plans, but we wanted a change (I would not go into politics here, but that was one of the reasons we left our country). I hope this gave you better understanding.

@@QuillOfTheIsles2199 For people like me it has everything to do with the tax laws in Malta. I'm working for myself, making my money online from outside Malta. With the Maltese residence programme i don't have to pay any tax over the income i'm making from outside of Malta. Only a maximum of 15.000 euro per year. Next to that, when u are from a more nothern european country like myself ( Netherlands ), than the weather is also a very good reason to go to Malta, but that's just a big bonus.
First you complained about the public transport which is free about you have to wait this is due we are overr populated just compare the population per one kilometres squared with Malta Italy France Germany etc there you have the answer

Hi Alex, Deepika here. Wonderful video again. I have come back to India for a month as my son couldn't take the high temperatures. Regarding the feelings the localites have for foreigners; I think not just Malta but entire Europe is pretty much run by immigrants now. Europe needs them more than they need them. They need people to pay taxes in order to give away free goodies to the older people like pension, healthcare and subsidised housing. I am sure in many countries there is no free pension given by the government. For example India, we work out asses off to spend for the present and to save for the future as we don't get government pension unless you are a government employee. I think in Europe, it has now reached a point of egg first or chicken first wherein one can't tell whether foreigners are coming because there are more jobs or because there aren't any localites willing to do few jobs, so foreigners are coming. This is something that the Maltese government has to answer. Anyways, kudos to you for always finding relevant topics to cover through your channel ❤
