Excellent summary of features - lots I can apply right away to the Raymarine Axiom chartplotter that came with the boat I just bought. Keep up the great content.

Thanks Dave, good video! I have had an Axiom on Seascape for 2 years and learnt a thing or two!

Good Video Dave - I also have the Axiom 9 - nice bit of kit.
One thing i have added to my data on navigate is Course Made Good and Bearing to next Waypoint. It just gives that immediate cross check about where you're actually likely to end up relative to waypoint. If they match all good , if not - is that expected?
Obviously if you're sailing a course at right angles to the tide then you're not going to expect them to match if your course to steer calculations are vaguely accurate but it's a good way to ensure no surprises!!
100% echo the external card reader. Mine is cockpit mounted in a scanstrut pod at the helm so if i were to put one in it would be exposed to the weather so i suck it up but i'm strongly considering a second MFD at the chart table with the external. Just need to upgrade the batteries first though as if I read the manual correctly, that would make the below decks version the data master so it needs to be on all the time!

Thanks Jason. Yes the CMG and the Bearing is something I do need to set up. I’ve still been navigating on the iPad so far this year as it gives me an extra screen on the helm. My plan is to rely on the chartplotter for everything on the next trip so I’m sure I’ll be adding those to the screen.
Yes I know my system is set up with the screen at the chart table being the Master and the screen at the helm is the slave unit. One thing I didn’t mention in the video was that any changes made to the master screen is replicated on the slave screen.

Great job in explaining your Raymarine setup. Suggest you also add STW to your dashboard. This way you can compare SOG with STW and know what the tide is doing.

Thank you. Yes that is exactly what I have done. I have made a few changes to the set up since recording that episode. 👍

Hi Dave, thanks for your video.
I have same boat as you already couple years, so far just sailing around Adriatic sea.
I also preparing for upgrade my navigation system but I make decisions to buy cheaper version Raymarine ploter(element 7 s) and I will interface new ploter wit existing Raymarine ST60 devices, also I will fit new ploter on my binnackle, I woul like to have chart front of me when I entering unknown bay.
Can you please advise what size is your main sail sheet, I preparing to change main sail sheet but I think previous owner put ther little bit thicker sheet and my stopper not closing easily.😮

Watched it 3 times now, great explanation.
I’ve got an axiom9plus (still in the box) I bought a Scanstrut pod to fit it at the helm, big enough to add a couple of smaller instruments alongside.
Bad idea! The pod is too big, I don’t like how much it obstructs my view. Considering fitting the axiom at the nav station and using an iPad at the helm but worry about the sun and heat here in Crete.

Thanks for the useful info. Do you use the axiom as an anchor alarm much? My nav instruments draw about 2A when all on which is quite a lot of draw on the battery for just an anchor alarm. I use an app on my phone instead.

Hi Jonny. Yes I do run the Axiom anchor alarm overnight and it does use a bit of juice from the battery. But, I do have a lithium battery system and solar, so I'm not too worried about how much it uses overnight as it soon gets recharged when the sun comes up. I too use an app on the iPad as a backup.

Will the anchor alarm sound on the iPad if connected? Or is it display only?

All too high tech for a dinosaur like me, I'm still comfortable with the same equipment that Nelson's navigation officer had plus a radio transceiver. Still make do with a 20 year old Nokia.

Always work with depth of water, not depth under keel! That way you can easily check your depth against chart depth and it CONFIRMS you are where your gps says you are. Do the depth under keel in your head!

  • @mantas6293

why can't they do multiple depth data points on chartplotters. like DepthWL, DepthKeel - you enter offsets of your transducer to both and you can have both. now on every boat you can have different settings - default (transducer), or waterline or bellow keel.. for speed you have both fields "speed over ground" and you have "speed over water" (if you have water speed sensor), why can't depth be this way is a mystery for me.
