Not far wrong! : ) I'm a big fan though & would recommend this to anybody. I've put CAN into airplanes and satellites. The boating companies have got it cleanly figured out though, no rocket science required, with NMEA 2k and this hardware. An important thing to know is that NMEA is the language spoken on boats, and the CANbus harnessing is the hardware. You will likely have some hardware gender-bender type problems if you mix and match the hardware flavors Mare-tron devicenet and and SeaTalkng for example. With a lot of experience, I nevertheless found translating between the two hardware paradigms to be a brain-twister. Oh, and remember this J-1939 is NOT compatible (...but you can get a converter.)

Working for the US Coast Guard as an electronics technician, they trained me on both systems since some vessels still utilize nmea 183. 2000 is so much simpler and reliable in my experience. Great video Stu.
Great video! Excellent summary of connecting devices. Please consider a video adding nmea sensors (temp, oil pressure, cooling water, or tach) to the Detroit, and networked into the system. Amazing amount of nmea sensors now available for just about anything. Old school (Detroit Desiel) meets new school (nmea 2000).
This is me. I've got old detroits and they have no digital sensing. There are two choices: all new transducers, or a converter. I picked the Alba-combi unit which is a converter. The reason is that all the sensors are installed on the engine already, and harnessed up to the bridge. There's nothing wrong with analog sensors, and the tough part, fishing all the cable, is already done, and the expensive part (all the gauges for two helms and two engines) is sunk cost. So what do I even want? I want the computer alarms to watch oil pressure, coolant temp, exhaust manifold temp etc etc. all the time, so I don't have to. I could lose an engine because i"m drinking a beer instead of watching water temp. the converter will take all the gauge inputs and stick them on the N2k network so the chartplotter display can alarm them.
Love these technical explanations. It would be awesome to have well produced and simply explained (like this one) videos about various systems and concepts in a properly categorized playlist. They are invaluable to us owner/operators. The fact that it’s you on your boat and not a manufacturer or even a vendor shilling the product is key. Stew, we like you because although the Ray Marine guy is there to sell product (nothing wrong there) we know you won’t let him feed us some BS. In fact, I’m sure, if they know you, they simply won’t even try any BS to begin with. If you end up getting some kit free or at a discount, no harm done.
I am not sure about a categorised playlist but Mads at Sail Life youtube channel has packed his sailboat with the most amazing array of technology nerworked therough NMEA. I think John from Ray Marine is on the technical side, not sales, so I am not sure he is about selling anything. excellant presentation. When I did mine Several years ago I neglected one important aspect, I never made up a diagram of my system or labeled any of my cables, and now have forgotten which devices are connected where. Ill have to go back and trace everything again. love the system though.

Hi Stue, going back a couple of episodes you mentioned about you would have liked a bigger boat, not being able to sleep because I'm just an old bloke it came to me in the middle of the night. perhaps you could extend the rear deck by 1200mm, the deck only no the hull, and support it with a couple of triangle braces, you could then extend your cabin by about 450mm this would be a fairly easy modification. Of course this just a thought that I had. I enjoy your weekly updates.
Really nice set up. The Detroit controls being mechanical you can try using some electric over air valves to work trans and throttle. I'm sure that Detroit has a place for an air compressor to run off the bull gear.

The grounding sounds the same as an industrial system. Normal ground for power circuits is protective ground as it allows the protection circuits to work correctly. The other ground is instrument ground, this allows instruments to work correctly and the two systems are not normally connected. When I say not connected, in the petrochemical industry the act of connecting these systems together generates a DCM (don't come Monday)
If only CAN in automotive was this simple and user friendly. Car manufacturers seem to go out of their way to make harnesses as difficult as possible to diagnose. A spare Backbone, Backbone Cable and Device Cable would be handy as spares.
if your car came without any dash or ECU at all and you had to add that all aftermarket, it would surely become this easy. for the same reason in both situations. market control. if you have an all Raymarine setup, your gonna keep buying their stuff, cos the plugs all fit. the automakers also want you to keep buying their stuff, so its obscured. its way easier to just buy their part. CAN is open and pretty robust, but the industry does not really want you playing with it.
It’s not designed to be user friendly as it’s not intended to be user accessible. It can be of course in consumer-facing products like aftermarket ECUs (see Haltech) but not in your everyday mass production car.

Where did you get the Seatalk diagram you show in your vid? It’s the best I’ve seen for clarity and I’d like to get a copy since I’m new to Seatalk and am in the process of installing Raymarine hardware. Is it a PDF file that I can download someplace?
Got my hands on components for a NMEA network I planned to put on my boat, but unfortunately once I got everything laid out it was missing some critical pieces.
Do you still use the Axiom 9? Is the display large enough for general navigation/fishing? I'm looking at the 12 but is it too large for a 5.5m fishing boat?
@@DangarMarine yes very handy. I have fuel consumption from outboard and both Fueltanks have senders. The Raymarine MFD shows me if i can get home from a fishing trip nicely without using the spare fueltank. And if i trottle back, range increases acordingly.
Hi, I have a Raymarine Axiom unit and a Garmin unit in my boat. I'm not sure why the😂 previous owner decided to put 2 units in the cockpit. The boat has a Seatalk NG setup. I was thinking about moving the Garmin from the cockpit to inside the cabin. Can I connect it to the seatalk, and if so, will it sync with all the Raymarine data? The other thing I want to do is put in a Fusion stereo and a fusion remote controller, which can both be connected to the NMEA network. Will these work normal through the Seatalk NG network? Thanks for any advice/help you're able to give.
i have a EV100 autopilot on seatalkng and a separate network switch HS5 that connects my Radar, AIS and Axiom. I want to connect by EV100 to the HS5 so I can see my autopilot on the Axiom. Is this possible. I spent endless hours searching Seatalkng to Raynet to no avail. Any Ideas?
Electronics is all well and good but the ability to know where you are if out of sight of land due to weather, battery, electronic failure or engine breakdown is more important.

That conduit is actually leftover bilge pump outlet hose that I had from the workshop. :)

The main display is an Axiom 12 and the backup is an Axiom 7. The 9 is a very useful size for sure.

You should have invested in copper and the company that makes the connecters.

@@DangarMarine Yeah new tech is great but the fundamentals are still essential up here... I was so pissed when the cancelled local LORAN and now even VOR is essentially dead but funny they still have ADF (I fly too)
