- How amazing is that front heavy timber entrance starting to look like? I absolutely love the result so far and it looked even better with a nice coat of stain on it. I also finished sheathing the roof and installing the roofing underlayment. Everything is ready for he metal roof to be installed now.

I am Tristan, I am building a 400 SF cabin at the back of my house. I plan on doing it all by myself. I plan on sharing this journey here on RUclips where I will show you every step of the way, all the struggles I run into and everything I will learn from this experience. I will then rent the cabin as a short term rental in hope of covering most, if not, all my house mortgage (House Hacking). Follow me here as this will absolutely be one of a kind journey.

It’s the best log cabin I have seen built……solid from the ground up….well made….. greetings from down under Australia…and a very Merry Christmas to you and your love ones….patio is looking great!
Thanks a lot Dennis! Good holidays to you too! It’s getting cold here, probably getting snow next week and min temps is going to be around 3 Fahrenheit 🥶
Still working on my cabin in Minnesota. Cold and snow make it difficult. However, the steel roof is on, just put siding on it 2 weeks ago. Bought Gecko Siding Clamps. Holds the siding in place and perfect spacing. Money well spent. Now it's sealed for winter. Insulation and wiring next. Cold working, but no bugs.
Very nice!
Nice work, must be satisfying starting to get the cabin sealed up.
You’re right! It’s been very satisfying. Sometimes I just stand in that cabin, looking at all the work that’s been done so far with a very deep feeling of fulfillment, it’s amazing!
You're doing quite well. I like your series.
Thanks !
Please remember one man’s music, is another man’s racket, so not needed !!
😂
When you put your nails SO close together in line like that, you run the risk of splitting your wood. It doesn't add much to structural integrity, which is actually unnecessary.
Hey, I think the reason there were high spots in the rafters may be because they were crowning. If the one on each side were straight and the one in the middle was crowned, then it would be uneven.
Yep that’s what it was. If it’s only 1/8 or an inch or so it usually wouldn’t be a problem but in my case, it was much more and using a small planer to smooth things out was totally worth it!
Love that you include the costs and man hours involved!
Thanks !
Your manpower is much higher than it would have been if you had another person helping. For some jobs 2 people more than double the efficiency.
I have no doubt it does for sure !
I have just a couple of questions, but I want to say first that I build custom homes for a living, and I think the quality in which you're building is damn good. So, props on that. What is your opinion on nailing your sheathing as opposed to using crown staples? I know it's different in a lot of different areas, so I'm just curious. Also, are you using a ring shank nail or just a standard nail? Either are fine. I'm just curious, lol.
Thanks Nickolas, it’s so interesting to see the different point of views of people, I get builders to either validate or hate on this build, it’s quite interesting. I know I probably don’t do things in the most conventional fashion (since i have literally never done this) and I also go pretty conservative.
So I’m my area, I have never seen staples being used to install sheathing, because we’re technically in a high wind zone, I don’t think it’d be allowed by code. I have used only standard nails (I think?) whatever type of nails are the metabo collated 2.5” galvanized nails that lowes is carrying for my nail gun.
Good to know. Keep it up man, most people who hate have little experience in real-life situations from the standpoint of doing the work, AND funding/profiting, there for their opinions aren't all the way in perspective. Almost no one would jump in and just do this with their own money and very little experience regardless of any other factor. So keep going 💪🏼

What stain did you use for the porch? Also, is the timber treated?
It’s called cutek, the heavy timber isn’t treated
I've never seen any builder put so many nails (2 inches apart) on plywood root sheathing. What is the reason? Is it just a personal decision you made? Or is there a building code I'm not aware of?
We’re in a high wind area Tom, I went a little overboard, could have done 4” on the edges and 12 inches in the middle, still needed 4” spacing everywhere at the peak of roof and perimeter where wind forces can even be higher so I just decided to go with 4” everywhere to keep it simple.
Hi Tristan, I signed up for the blueprints but never received the email.
Hi Dave, that’s strange, it’s an automatic thing. Have you checked your spam folder too?
@@TheDIYCabinGuy Nothing in my Spam folder either. I even did it again with a different email address and still didn’t receive anything
@@beccafisher go ahead and email me at thediycabinguy@gmail.com and I’ll send it over.
So I've been surfing around looking for this type of gable patio overhang and such but couldn't find a trace of technical info or even similar pictures. what the heck. oh and that blueprint is not really helping for this either.
Yeah blueprint is limited, I might release the full version eventually.
The videos should give you a good idea of how I did it tough
@@TheDIYCabinGuy like you said, I rewatched some of this stuff and I learned a few tips, so I'm gonna tip you💲😊... oh wait that's not the branch looking thing video I think... let me tip that one. PS. I can't tip, the function is not enabled. I guess youtubers can choose whether to accept them or not.
