No wonder I don't buy newer soundtracks without these maestros out there
This movie is a hidden gem.
I just watched it yesterday. It was recommended after I was researching the 30 years war. Berserk got me into that subject ! Very nice movie I’m planning on reading the novel written in the 50s! They must remake this movie !!!!!
@@S3aCa1mRa1n Why would the film need to be remade? That makes no sense.
@@bobbydazzler8684 You're right it's perfect as it is and Barry's music is also perfect. Caine and Omar Sharif are so good. No need to make it again🇨🇭
@@brucekilby9957 on the other hand, it would be nice to have a theatrical re-release …
@@vinista256 Yes I agree, but the age of this movie,1971,it could be done but,it might be to expensive to make in these days of Covid and cost of living problems. Movies are not made on big budgets any more. I too would like a new version. Regards.🐎⛪
No recent posts here it seems, sadly...then let me add mine for what its worth...bravo Mr Barry for your wonderful gift !
People forget just how incredible John Barry was. This is just stunning and emotive. Put your headphones on, close your eyes and your there in the Last Valley.

Another perfect score from the maestro
Great music to a great film..... Only John Barry could write this movie music....
One of my all time favorite scores to a fantastic film. The ultimate John Barry score.
I remember an interview in which Michael Caine had said how sorry he was this movie was not a box office hit. Personally I loved it and still do....the great film critic of the London Sunday Times, Dilys Powell, said it showed at last what a terrific actor Caine was turning into and she was right. His superb death scene always breaks me up - wonderful acting ! Barry`s romantic movement is so moving.
Just when I think I've heard the best of John Barry, I find another indescribable Barry masterpiece. Put quite simply, John Barry is remarkable.
One of a few 'non Dracula /vampire' films depicting the Thirty Years War time frame ...'I love it'....Music Maestro John Barry simply outstanding in this music....
No body does it better.
John Barry was a pure genius.
The End Title and Death of the Captain are magical.
Brilliant, intelligent and brutal long forgotten masterpiece. Barry's Ost truly does justice to the horror of the thirty years war.
Forget cgi and modern special effects battle scenes and the rest. This movie has emotions which has made me very.
I first saw this movie in 1972 , at the Astra cinema at SAF Base Tengah formerly RAF Tengah in Singapore. The music score is brilliant especially at the end , Death of the Captain , brings me to tears . There will never be be another John Barry.
but what a legacy!
Great soundtrack for a film that is a hidden gem.
Saw "The last valley" decades ago in my teens.Found it gripping and what a sound track! This movie is a hidden gem....
Mike
One of my favorite films, great. ❤🔥
It's unmistakably John Barry. He's much, much more than the man who scored all the great Bond films.
Nobody can forget the "Captain" !
Love this film (Michael Caine and Omar Sharif are fantastic in it)...and, of course, the music - which I only discovered belonged to John Barry years after I'd seen the film the first time.
one of the greatest film and score of all time
Undoubtedly, one of the finest John Barry scores, not gimmicky as he could be.
I wanted to see this underrated movie for years... I agree, is a hidden gem.
Excellent film, shows in all its harshness what were the religious wars between Catholics and Protestants. That shows that far from having God's approval, she will be judged by His blood-filled hands.
the last 2 minutes are absolutely golden...............
This is my favorite movie soundtrack ever since I saw The Last Valley at the post theater at Fort Ord, California in 1971. I also greatly enjoy John Barry's many other compositions as well.
Yes, among them "Dances with Wolves" and "Out of Africa" are amazing too, but this one is a true epos.
Excellent film and the soundtrack does much to immerse you in the miserable times the film is based in along with the tranquility of the valley.
Caine has such a dead on German accent in this movie it is tough to remeber he's British! Oskar Pedersen's slimy priest was great as well, very memorable characters all around. If only they still made movies with this kind of quality both behind and in front of the camera.
Agreed!!
Late in High School, I was not ready to go to sleep. The local TV network that played movies started this, and I stayed to watch. What an amazing treat! Incredible story, especially for a gen X American who didn't learn about this history.
I see some guys have said where they saw this neglected masterpiece - mine was at the Leicester Square Theatre, London, in 1972. It blew me away and I sat through it twice. Years ago I heard Michael Caine say that the fact that the film was not a box office success was one of his disappointments. To watch great acting is to see his death scene which concentrates on his eyes. Superb acting !
This is a wonderful intelligent movie about an interesting subject. Michael Caine inhabits his character totally. The music is just the icing on the cake. People are delighted when they stumble across it as its obscure.
I hear Bruckner, James Bond, Dvorak...incredibly unique despite those clear inspirations. John Barry is the man!
Damn good analysis there!! Bravo!!!
Definitely Dvorak over Bruckner. A great score. Should have been nominated for an Oscar®,
Morricone, Williams, Bernstein.. but Barry is in a class of his very own. The man is beyond words.
Don't forget Goldsmith and Herrmann (the best scorers of them all).
John Barry, one of the best composers of movie music in the last 50 years. Especially for action adventure films like the JAMES BOND movie, but also dramas like THE LION IN WINTER,ZULU , MIDNIGHT COWBOY,IPCRESS FILE,BORN FREE,THE CHASE and MARY ,QUEEN OF SCOTS just to name a few.
Mavrilon. And Micael Caine is in Zulu, Ipcress File and The Last Valley. And good in all of them. A great actor in anything.🎶
I first saw this movie as a young child. At a later date I saw this movie again. The one thing more than ever, the I remember, was the music score.Great.
Wonderful film and soundtrack, well worth a watch if you haven't seen it!
I remember seeing it on its release at the Leicester Square Theatre in London and it blew me away. Historically it is spot-on in every respect - story, costumes, action. It is also well-acted with this great score. The film Critic, Dilys Powell, who had been reviewing movies for almost half a century for the "Sunday Times" wrote that "At last, after a string of weak movies and weak performances, Mr Caine proves he can really act."
Terrific Movie about a truce during the Thirty year War much underrated with quite the Plot!
Great movie, performances and my favourite John Barry soundtrack
Another great master piece from the great John Barry.
Great film, superb score ❤
@Tapiola2007 One of my favorite movies. I can readily see how Michael Caine (and probably the director and producer) would be unhappy with its reception. My hope is that it will eventually be recognized much better. John Barry's music was, as usual, very well suited to the material and enhanced the movie. What a career and legacy!
I just saw your posting. I agree totally. I saw John Barry live in 1999 and the concert was worth such nuch to me - I was in Heaven so yes maybe he is a god.
what a beautiful theme at the end. i never tire of hearing it!
non capisco come abbia fatto a non avere il successo che merita. gran film e musica straordinaria.
Music from the Master ------- WHERE'S HIS KNIGHTHOOD, deserves it more than most out there !!!
The music 3:37 to 5:10 made me cry, it is beautiful.
+allen jones
like this music also very good.........
I was crying too.
Nobody does it better than John Barry.
I could no sleep for months after watching this movie ( I was six then).
What will they say about John Barry's work in a hundred, no two hundred years time. Will there be at statue to remember this great composer.
Will he be remembered along with the great musicians of history. One thing I do know is no one will remember me, but i'm dammed glad i was around long enough to hear and see is work in action.
R.I.P. John Barry.
💙 this sound track and film
Amazing score, beautifully shot film great cast.
I had to watch this for History class. The film was just alright, but this is one of the greatest, most badass soundtracks I've ever heard. It rises above even Game of Thrones in terms of epicness.
fantastique musique.film fascinant a voir et revoir na pas eu la renommer qu il merite
Barry at his best.
As always John Barry's film score came to the rsscue big time.
La combinación entre la música y las imágenes es impactante.
gran film non sufficentemente apprezzato, colonna sonora splendida. un ispirato john barry.
love this, I'm so hapy that my parents are introducing me this "old" beautiful masterpieces
absolute class
he´s the man!! john barry!!
A movie that brings back a lot memories for me and now it's absurd that religions would fight over who's God is better or what ever. Michael caine is great as mercenary and Omar Sharif is good as the hiding prodestant. But in so many films it's john Barry's music which is so beautiful and evocative, that it adds depth and character to the film.a great composer and such a range of music.
Film bellissimo , musica paradisiaca !!
The movie is about the Thirty Years War and a village that was hidden in a valley that had escaped the war until being discovered.
A very different style movie, something I posted to Russian friends years ago, almost a Russian type movie based on storyline and not expensive sets and battles. Emotional love and music, not forgetting the plague and witch burning. Shame not many movies made about the 30 years war which devastated Europe, Britain being an island got away with it lightly.
I agree HipHolland, a great film. I probably saw it at the same time as yourself and have always been struck by its unusual subject matter; the 100 years war. A brave attempt to show something out of the ordinary which, I also agree with you on, was never properly understood. Oh, and fantastic music too, of course!!
Close your eyes and listen from 3:34 to the end. There is a Heaven.
+shim erian I want to go out of this world listening to John Barry.
Me too.
I'm 100% metal head, but I love John Barry's music 100%🤘🇬🇧😃
Yes. My favorite part.
Superbe !!
FYI... one of my favorites, too - but just so you know, most of the really juicy bits of dialogue were lifted intact, or nearly so from the source novel by J.B. Pick, including the one you just posted. Clavell was a great writer, and to his credit, he found the best parts in Pick's book, re-assigned some of it to different characters, and made some great stuff up like the subplot involving witchcraft.
Well said
beautiful, thank you for sharing. Now i need to find it in mp3 somehow somewhere.
have the DVD and the soundtrack .amongst many wonderful gems by this great great musician .
michael kaine it's on CD ..
Excelente película, muestra en toda su crudeza lo que fueron las guerras religiosas entre católicos y protestantes. Eso demuestra que lejos de tener la aprobación de Dios, será juzgadas por sus manos llenas de sangre.
3:37 onwards is quite simply, breath-taking.
I couldn't agree with you more.
I have seen this movie on the BIG 70MM SCREEN in 1972, Amsterdam Cinerama, The Netherlands
Quotes
The Captain: There is no Hell. Don't you understand? Because there is no God. There never was. Don't you understand? There is no God! It's a legend!
Yes it's a good quote, but I wonder if a person in the 1630s would have had the incredible insight to realize this. And I wonder even more if he dared to scream that out loud, because people probably would have accused him of heresy.
We'll never know!
+Paul Riet
is it insight or ignorance ??
Harrie de Haas n
How correct The Captain is.
Remembrance of the 30 year war in Europe, one of the bloodiest massacres, Christian sects against each other with no stone unturned. It is no wonder not many movies have been made of this period. Mainland Britain escaped being an island. A romantic sentimental movie of loss, great music piece, that is if you appreciate movie scores and classical.
Comme d'habitude, le City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra nous livre une version exemplaire digne de l'original. Du John Barry en concert symphonique..... j'y cours !
merci
I like this film, but when I first saw this film poster I didn't think it was about the Thirty Years' War at all, more like the ancient Greek times. And I didn't see that that bearded guy was supposed to be Michael Caine either.
Peliculon con Sir Michael caine...y Omar Shariff..

And your favourite all-time musical composer is ........Drum Beat ...The Great John Barry ...and what musical composer to work with today to consider musical scores of drama spy epic thrillers ...many of them out there but for now I will choose one for you. Search for Jonny Easton ..... of the UK ..... This youtube music is shared to my FB timeline and to Jonny Easton. Be well stay well and my condolences to the family and friends of Sir Sean Connery passing away the first original James Bond. Your good earth chef and friend for all LIFE Holistic Chef Barry Anderson
Music you to play when your trail hiking like at Sedona Arizona Sterling Pass Trail to Vultee Arch, while traversing treacherous 4 ft wide switch backs, 45 degree to 30 percent grade of mountain inclination' flat meadows, plethora of mountain climbing spots..the mother load of trails..
Delightful film score from Mr.Movie Music himself! Do prefer to hear the German song heard in the opening credits though. Anybody have the English translation? As far as I know it's something about 'he came, he saw, he conquered'. Nobody else can reach the emotional music high as John Barry, even though he 'threw' me out of his house when I called to meet him for just a minute! Genius and ... have a very close kinship! Still love him even though it's not returned -story of my life! {;o)
Bad manners to arrive at someone's home without advising the occupant beforehand. Barry did the correct thing by 'throwing' you out of his home.
There is something about this movie, forget CGi and all the effects. Maybe it is the story line and lost love. Not many films made about the 30 years war, Omar Sharif & Michael Cain played there part. Music is
God bless omar sharif ❤❤❤
The dialogue between him and Caine was outstanding.
...e anche una tragica allegoria di quanto puo' esserci di devastante dietro i sogni piu' belli...
actor Omar Sharif protrayed man's humanity to man, by his swansong underdog killing of Michael Caines' cutthroat character, toward the films ending. Few literature & films about the Thirty Years War, another classic was Viggo Mortensons leading role in "alatriste' '06.
Es la voz del Creador del universo...;)
go musik detta!
there is not hell, because there is not god! you dont understand???
the bigest truth...power film with magic music.
Like you know....lol
Horn section in the first piece sounds a LOT like a few of his Bond scores ... (not a bad thing, though)
I've just come.
...have never seen this movie; not even on late night. It looks like it might be similar to the Conan the Barbarian...
What's the storyline?
can someone point towards where i can find out about these movies?

Possibly this film was not very successful because of it's anti-religion theme. The conservative, religious right is big in the USA. If a film is going to succeed commercially it has to make it in America. Atheism was a bit 'advanced' for 1970. However the Barry score was superb then and its superb now.
+John Eley
i think the reason it did'nt succeed in the USA was because it was about the Thirty Years War(1618-48) which most Americans neither have any interest in or could understand. The wars underlying cause was religious (Protestant v Catholic) although the allegiances did'nt always reflect that. The bitterness of the capt was an inability to understand how something so positive (God and the Bible) could be turned into something so ugly and destructive. Man has always used God and the Bible as an excuse for their hatred and greed.....Omar Sharif's character understood that man was the problem not God...........
It wasn't the religious themes that killed this film. The fact that you had to think is what killed it. You had to appreciate and understand history and how religion tore the world apart, much as it is doing today.
It was too intellectual for the Woodstock crowd.
As Nixon's press secretary of the time would say "It doesn't play in Peoria".
@@stewag48 it’s a shame Americans have no interest in the 30 years war, because, in many ways, our founding values of religious tolerance were a reaction to all of that sectarian strife and bloodshed. Too many people nowadays are eager to impose their religion on everybody else.

The iron time. Germany seems to be doomed. Again and again its taken apart completely but again and again its rising from ashes . It is too strong for the rest so they all took it apart again and again.
But now the point has come where the last bit of hope is lost. This time is not iron but worse....
Gutless performance! Tempi are much too slow as well. Where in Hell is the German-language text? Scheisse!
