    I remember an interview in which Michael Caine had said how sorry he was this movie was not a box office hit. Personally I loved it and still do....the great film critic of the London Sunday Times, Dilys Powell, said it showed at last what a terrific actor Caine was turning into and she was right. His superb death scene always breaks me up - wonderful acting ! Barry`s romantic movement is so moving.

Emotional love and music, not forgetting the plague and witch burning. Shame not many movies made about the 30 years war which devastated Europe, Britain being an island got away with it lightly.

As far as I know it's something about 'he came, he saw, he conquered'. Nobody else can reach the emotional music high as John Barry, even though he 'threw' me out of his house when I called to meet him for just a minute! Genius and ... have a very close kinship! Possibly this film was not very successful because of it's anti-religion theme. The conservative, religious right is big in the USA. If a film is going to succeed commercially it has to make it in America. Atheism was a bit 'advanced' for 1970. However the Barry score was superb then and its superb now.

    • @stewag48
      @stewag48 8 лет назад +7

      +John Eley
      i think the reason it did'nt succeed in the USA was because it was about the Thirty Years War(1618-48) which most Americans neither have any interest in or could understand. The wars underlying cause was religious (Protestant v Catholic) although the allegiances did'nt always reflect that. The bitterness of the capt was an inability to understand how something so positive (God and the Bible) could be turned into something so ugly and destructive. Man has always used God and the Bible as an excuse for their hatred and greed.....Omar Sharif's character understood that man was the problem not God...........

      It wasn't the religious themes that killed this film. The fact that you had to think is what killed it. You had to appreciate and understand history and how religion tore the world apart, much as it is doing today.

      It was too intellectual for the Woodstock crowd.
      As Nixon's press secretary of the time would say "It doesn't play in Peoria".

      @@stewag48 it’s a shame Americans have no interest in the 30 years war, because, in many ways, our founding values of religious tolerance were a reaction to all of that sectarian strife and bloodshed. Too many people nowadays are eager to impose their religion on everybody else.

    The iron time. Germany seems to be doomed. Again and again its taken apart completely but again and again its rising from ashes . It is too strong for the rest so they all took it apart again and again.
    But now the point has come where the last bit of hope is lost. This time is not iron but worse....

    Gutless performance! Tempi are much too slow as well. Where in Hell is the German-language text? Scheisse!
