Such an interesting story. Imagine 4 generations of fire fighters - what proud family the Murray’s must be. Thanks to the grand daughter for reaching out to tell us more on her family. Wow that cathedral was beautiful inside, the architecture was amazing - how they did that rose window back in the day - amazing. Thanks once again Ron for taking us along and sharing x
Wow, the inside of that cathedral is beautiful. Thanks for opening the door and showing us. There's such a big difference in seeing the rose window stained glass from the inside as to the outside. I love all the arches and stained glass.
Hi Ron and Everyone. What a beautiful church. I can only imagine how it was back in the day. Thank you Ron for another great walk about and the history lesson. 👍 Awesome !!!
My father was raised in the 20’ to the 40’s in Chicago. Went to dental school there at Loyola. He told me some very interesting stories about the mob there. He was an exercise jockey at a track there. Said the horses he worked were mostly owned by the mob.
What a gorgeous cathedral, sp glad you have us a look see. A well told story Ron, you sure know your history, these larger than life characters played a rough game😮 What a proud tradition and so glad you paid tribute to this family who has served in protecting others for generations, with pride 🍀💚 The bagpipes at the end was lovely.
Thank you to the Murray men for their service with the fire departments and EMT’s. My BIL was a critical care paramedic and firefighter. He just retired a couple years ago. He was in central Wisconsin. That cathedral is absolutely stunning! Thanks Ron for another great video! Good luck with your move!
Thanks for the story and the glimpse inside the Cathedral. I'm an alumnus of The Cathedral of the Holy Name Grade School, Class of '64. [Eighth Grade.] I was a choir boy and altar boy there. My parents renewed their vows in the Cathedral. Also a patrol boy -- my corner was Chicago and Wabash. I had never heard of Weiss's bodyguard, Murray, also being hit. When I was in the 5th Grade, our ''playground'' was a concrete/asphalt parking lot directly across State. Another similar empty lot was adjacent just north of it, where Schofeld's had been. The Desilu production, ''The Untouchables'' was on primetime TV then. During one lunch hour, my buddies were all talking about the episode where Weiss got whacked. I was so curious, I told the Sister watching us, ''I wanted to cross the street to go to confession.'' I was conducting my forensic querry of the sandstone cornerstone, peering into details -- when suddenly a blinding pain presented in my right ear. It was Sister Mary Michael [the 'nice' nun] and she was screaming at me: ''Briney McGxcxd -- D'ye wanta go to Hell too? Wise guy, huh? Ye're goin' ta HELL! That's where all the Wise Guys go.'' [OW! No 'Ster] ''Well then, Ye'd better get into the confessional now!'' And she let go my ear. I made a beeline for the big brass doors. In the 8th Grade, I got into the floral line, myself. I worked for Weinhoeber's on Michigan as a delivery boy for $0.90 cents an hour. Not very 'connected.' BTW, it was * Dean O'Banion * he was born in downstate Illinois. The newspapers jazzed his name up to ''Dion'' to make it sound more Gaelic. ''When the Legend gets bigger than Fact, Print The Legend.''
I don’t mean this to speak bad of their Grandfather or anyone else (there’s been times in history that many people had to do whatever they could to feed their family) but it’s almost like the descendants took the higher road to rebuild their family name & reputations. It takes more determination & work to be “the good guys”. Thank you to this family & to you, Ron, for sharing this story.❤
A gorgeous cathedral, and so well taken care of! The history of the gangland era of Chicago is so fascinating, why is that? Your story here adds a human element, that these men had families and were, in actuality, just people. Interesting to see where these stories took place and the then and now pictures put it all in perspective. I lived in Carpentersville for 2-3 years in the early '60s but never made it to downtown Chicago.
I e only seen that cathedral from the outside when I visited the Windy City. Great story Ron! As always thanks for all your dedication to educate us about history!!
Great video Ron. Have you ever been to Al Capone’s Hideout in Northern Wisconsin? I was there quite a few years ago. I hope it’s still open. It was interesting. Hard to imagine they would hide out in northern Wisconsin until the heat died down in Chicago. That would be a long drive in there cars. And no interstate highways. Interstates didn’t happen until after WWII. During WWII all over the country were strips of concrete or whatever roads were made of back then. They were like air strips in case the military had to get to a certain part of the country they had places to land. After the war a majority of the strips were made into interstate highways. Then the baby boom and population was on the rise. Cities started expanding. The rest is history. I always tease my grand boys I’m full of useless information. 😁
I love hearing from the families of the people in the stories you tell. They always add so much more to it that's never been told before. I think Holy Name is the most beautiful church in the Chicago area. Pictures and videos can never do it justice. The architecture inside and out is simply stunning. Great video Ron!
Hi Ron . A. Very interesting and informative vlog . The Murray family, of firefighters, EMTs ,what a wonderful, courageous, dedicated family . Beautiful vlog . Thanks. Take care . Deborah 🇨🇦
So well done with such respect. This was a honor to watch. My relative was James J Walker mayor of NYC 1926-1932. And a grand uncle was a New York City police officer during the depression.
incredible what you have discovered for us about Paddy Murrays legacy..... great work on this follow up sir...this is one of the most interesting gangland tales to me and you brought it to life for us in such a memorable way...respect and admiration to the Murray firefighters, thanks again for enlightening us
There's an interesting story from my hometown, about a man who owned a tavern named Chaney. The tavern was located in Lancaster, South Carolina between Charlotte, NC and Camden, SC. He got a lot of travelers who carried a lot of money on them. The travelers always went missing near Chaney's tavern. They could never pin the murders on Chaney but he did get caught for other crimes. It's a local legend that there is a graveyard of his, and treasures hidden somewhere near HWY 521. There was a book that was written that went into more detail than this called, Milt Chaney's Tavern by Don L McCorckle.
Think that was the thing in those days no matter where you lived there were gangs .Amazing family 4 generations helping their city.thanks Ron,safe travels,👋👋🙏🙏👍🇦🇺
Another awesome history story. Very intriguing to hear about gangster tales and see the actual photos, after growing up watching gangster movies. I wonder why they call it the Rose Windows.. when to me, looks like daisy pedals lol .. Thanks for sharing.
That was a heart-warming family story. I'm guessing the last picture shows Parnell and his wife with his mom on their wedding day. Did Maureen ever find out how her grandpa became involved with the mob to begin with? I'm very sorry that he paid with his life for it.
So interesting and I never realized Irish were involved with the mob. I always thought it was the Italian Mafia only and was a close knit group. I didn't know outsiders were allowed in. LoL They did a good job patching the stonework on the cathedral. The cathedral is gorgeous inside and out. Thank you thank you thank you for letting us see it all over the outside and all inside as well. That was gorgeous. I loved seeing inside. Thank you for telling all this info and paying respects to him because even if he did go astray, he came back around and got on the straight and narrow again. But maybe he didn't get involved. Sounds like he raised some good kids and that would be from a good heart. Yes, breaking a hip or a leg in old age spells trouble. I have known so many people at work who have a family member who fell and broke something like a hip or leg and then were hampered from then on....leg was too short to walk and they passed soon after. Blood clots or something got to them from lack of mobility. So sad.
Thank you for all you do to keep us entertained and informed on history with your videos Ron. On the topic of gangsters and Chicago. I would love to see you cover Jack Machine Gun McGurn. I have always been fascinated by him. Ties right into this story too.
A former supervisor of mine, last name O'Hara, originally from Beardstown, Ill., told me that the Italian mafia wasn't anything compared to the Irish. His father or grandfather was in it during that time. Just what he told me.
Hi Ron you are looking well I like anything gangster I missed the first I will go watch that after, anytime you do a video your research is impeccable that a very beautiful church
I like some of the modern buildings, but I hate that they replaced older buildings of charm and historical significance (even if the significance was negative). I guess a city has to do that sometimes, though, to be a commercial hub.
The A.D. 1874 set into the building looks different than the A. D. 1874 from the photo from the 1930s. My theory is entire blocks of stone were replaced that were hit by bullets.
Looks like they added the steps up to the cross and covered up the inscription. If you look @8:50 you can see one of the bullet hole above the "D" and the one below has the crack running next to it. Wonder why they covered the inscription?
There wasn’t a fence until a few yrs ago when they added a new corner to the cathedral ,when I was there in 1992 and 95 the building corner was where the hole in the wall is . Google Holy Name Cathedral and you’ll see. None of that glass buildings were there when I was either it was a car park.
Great episode, that church is amazing 🤩 I have a hard time concentrating on the story you were telling that church distracting me, first I want to know what year it was built then I seen the date😁 wishing you would go inside and you did 😁 breathtaking love to see more of it sometime 😀
I couldn’t go inside because it would’ve been super disrespectful because people were praying, also there’s high security there (if you noticed at the front door) I would’ve been stopped - so we did great getting what we got I was very pleased. You’ll notice I was not pointing at the people, pointing more up at the ceiling and walls. You can’t just bumble in there shooting video while people are praying
Oh my gosh, I can’t even count the number of episodes I’ve done up there. Forest Home Cemetery, Calvary cemetery …live streams. Where have you been?? 😀
On Superior St. about where the flock of pigeons is walking around on the sidewalk is where Hymie Weiss was supposed to have parked his car and was walking to Schofields Flower Shop when he was gunned down on State St.

Such a BEAUTIFUL cathedral and a VERY INTERESTING story!! XXXX 🤗💗👍❤
Hi Ron
Great story
Good story Ron 🙋♂️🐈🐈
I'm a great grand niece of Paddy Murray living in Ireland
Wonderful outcome for 4 generations.
Hi there Ron I'm going to join you again
I went to Cathedral High School which is now Xavier school. I went to mass at Holy Name Cathedral and knew the history of Hymie Weiss
Grand-daddy Paddy was a gangster, and generations of his descendants have saved countless lives.
The Holy Name works in mysterious ways.
So interesting and I never realized Irish were involved with the mob. I always thought it was the Italian Mafia only and was a close knit group. I didn't know outsiders were allowed in. LoL
They did a good job patching the stonework on the cathedral. The cathedral is gorgeous inside and out. Thank you thank you thank you for letting us see it all over the outside and all inside as well. That was gorgeous. I loved seeing inside.

So many episodes there though - I can’t even tell you where or which one sorry - but I covered him already 😊

Hi Ron! These guys were soo bad.. very evil. This church is very beautiful.
I like some of the modern buildings, but I hate that they replaced older buildings of charm and historical significance (even if the significance was negative). I guess a city has to do that sometimes, though, to be a commercial hub.
Agree
Lots of pigeons there 😃

Was AL Capone's Funeral held there?
I would say that hole at 8:40 is from were the old wrought iron fence joined to the building !

Glad hand handshake? What does this mean, Ron? Thank you
While the middle gangster was shaking his hand - the two flaking on the side shot him through the head.
Definition of gladhand: “noun
a warm and hearty, but often insincere, greeting or welcome”.
I have done nothing than let my dogs out and feed them, then I’m glued to this 😂👍

Samuel Jackson Murray Jr was also gunned down to end his life and Dallas Texas
Could anyone please tell me how I can watch Part 1?
All you have to do is go down in the description and the links are there, everything is cross referenced
It doesn't look like there are very many people out and about at least on foot.
that's because it was 6:00 AM in the morning there when I shot this.
