    The problem with the “Light vs Dark” is that the Jedi was so afraid of the Darkside that they were cutting off the very things that brought light into our dark world, Love and Attachment.

      Also, the idea of a "Light Side" never existed in Star Wars. The Jedi are the expression of the Force our and simple. @@Obi-Wan_Kenobi Love = immorality. Got it, this is why a lot of us hate the Jedi. The Dark Side is not what turned Anakin into a monster, the inability of the Jedi to help him cope with his emotions turned him into a monster. If they hadn't been so dogmatic and rigid, they could have helped him find balance, temper his emotions, but instead Yoda literally tells him to "learn to stop being sad lol" and expects that to work. And when it doesn't, as any actual human being knows it won't, their intolerenace of anyone who thinks differently from themselves leaves him no choice but to align with Palpatine if he wants to save Padmé. Palpatine who himself has no choice but to, given that he doesn't believe as the Jedi do, wage war on the Jedi for the sake of his own survival. The idea that love and emotion leads people to become evil is fucking vile. George Lucas is wrong.

    • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi
      @Obi-Wan_Kenobi 4 года назад +2

      @@axebearer Actually it was the Dark Side. The Jedi never told Anakin to kill kids the dark side did. You can't blame the Jedi for the terrible choices Anakin made. And yes I can expect this of Anakin since literally every other Jedi does this and none of them turn evil.
      You are presenting a very western view of love where you are equating attachment to love. You do not have to kill innocent people to keep your loved ones safe but that exactly what Anakin did. Anakin was so desperate to lose her that he gave into his worst emotions and committed unspeakable evil to save her. Do not perpetuate the lie that saving someone is more important than all else nor does that love justify hurting innocent people.
      That exactly why the Jedi's rules prevented marriage , so no one would be placed in the difficult position of choosing between those they love and the greater good. It's Anakin who wanted it both ways, the power of the Jedi and love. His fall was entirely his fault.

    • @gatorarman12
      @gatorarman12 4 года назад

      @@Obi-Wan_Kenobi I'm sorry but Gaius is right on this one. And you missed the point of Anakin's fall. Anakin had attachment to his mother and to Padme. Because all human beings feel love and attachment. The Jedi told him to ignore his emotions, and we subsequently get the whole fear -> anger -> hate and as a result he fell. Sure, Sidious helped him along, and Anakin made his own choices after the fall. But the Jedi order's dogma and inability to help him with his emotions was the catalyst.
      The only reason most Jedi didn't turn evil is because they were taken as children and literally brainwashed to not have feelings. Anakin was too old for the brainwashing. They say so themselves. They shouldn't have trained him. It's fine if you want to have a completely detached/emotionless Jedi order. But then at least then stick to their rules and don't train some one who is "too old" by their standards. The only prequel Jedi that could've successfully trained Anakin was Qui Gon and that's simply because he wasn't like the rest of the Jedi. He knew they had become flawed. He also knew what it meant to take Anakin away from his mom whom he felt a strong attachment to.
      The Jedi order by it's nature is extremely flawed. It's one of the main themes of the prequels. They are politicians, they are arrogant (Yoda begins to realize this in Episode II), they become soldiers (despite saying they are keepers of the peace), I could go on. They allow the Sith to rise up right under their eyes because they were too arrogant to believe Dooku when he literally said Sidious was in control of the Senate in Episode II. And directly as a result of that, the Empire rose and billions died.
      The whole point of the fall of the Jedi was that they were flawed and needed reform to grow beyond what they were. That's literally a direct quote from Yoda. Luke learned those lessons only after repeating the mistakes of the Jedi of old and getting one more lesson from Yoda himself.
      I agree that ideally the Jedi should be the expression of the will of the force itself. That's definitely what they thought they were. But because of several of the reasons listed above, they weren't. They had fallen from grace. No one wanted Rey to embrace the dark. The point is to acknowledge that we all have darkness and emotions within us. pretending they don't exist is how they control us and how we fall (See Anakin's fall). The whole point was the Jedi needed to be better. I don't agree with the way it's written in Colin's script, but I think the ultimate goal of grey Jedi like Qui Gon would've been perfect

    • @Obi-Wan_Kenobi
      @Obi-Wan_Kenobi 3 года назад +3

      @@gatorarman12 There is a common misconception about the Jedi preaching emotional ignorance and that's simple untrue. We see time and time again that Jedi have displayed emotion. Yoda displays emotion. He feels sad when the Jedi fall, he almost starts crying. I display emotion, I cry when Anakin turned.
      accordingand theygreatestexpressing
      That is that distinction between the Jedi and Anakin, he let emotion rule his choices. His fear of losing Padme overrides his duty to do what wars right. Yoda, myself, and all other Jedi never let fear of loss dictate us into doing immoral things. That is what the Jedi preach, never allowing emotion to stop you from doing the right thing because that unbridled passion is the Dark Side.
      And this philosophy of nit letting emotion rule is exactly what Qui-Got preaches too. He advocates for "letting go" to trust one's instincts to gave the purest connection with the Force. If anything, Qui-Gon is even more emotionally in control than I was.
      He's not a Gray Jedi, he just places a higher personal value on prophesy within the Jedi. Nothing wrong with that either, lots of different Jedi have different views so long as the they all work within the common Jedi philosophy. Kind of like hoe member of the Church have different individual views even while they share a duty of believing in God and spreading Christianity.
      Also, the Jedi did not brainwash kids, they just trained them from a point before they had attachments because it's much easier to not form attachments that it is to have attachments and let them go. Qui-Got didn't have attachments. I didn't have attachments. If anything, Qui-Gon overriding the Jedi Council was the problem. It wasn't the council, it was Qui-Gon's insistence.
      And attachments aren't bad for-say, they are just not optimal for the Jedi because the Jedi have a higher duty to protect lots of people. Anakin could have left the order of his own free will when ever he wanted but he didn't because he wanted to be a Jedi and have Padme. That's a problem.
      An finally, you're direct quote from Yoda comes from Episode 8. It's pretty well established that Episode 8 is full of contradiction to the central themes of Star Wars. The reason almost all Star War fans dislike it so much is because it contradicts the previous movies.
      Yoda only thought Luke orthodox Jedi teachings on the OT and Luke became and orthodox Jedi. This mistake of the sequels was to ascribe qualities upon Luke that he had overcome, like fear which is a Dark Side emotion. So Luke gives into his own fear (which is against the Jedi way and his own OT character arc) and blames the Jedi? That makes no sense. That like if I were a pacifist and in a moment of weakness I got mad and punched someone. And then I blame pacifism for my outburst even though my actions directly contradict what pacifism teaches!
      The sequels contrived a failure to make Luke and the Jedi look bad even though that failure was entry opposed to what the Jedi advocated. Yoda was nonsensical in the Last Jedi because in that film he's telling Luke to move beyond the Jedi even though he spent all of Empire telling Luke to be a traditional Jedi. Even after the Clone Wars and the Jedi's greatest defeat Yoda never gave up on the Jedi way, because the way was correct. It accordingly makes no sense for Yoda to later tell Luke to move beyond and this is again why fans thing the Last Jedi is a terrible, illogical, and contradictory film.
      It was Anakin who strayed from the Jedi way and by betraying the Jedi, himself, and a higher morality did Anakin, destroy the Jedi though evil. You cannot blame the victims for the actions of their attacks. Ad it was Luke's entire arc to show how he moved beyond fear of loss in Return of the Jedi to bring back his father and defeat the Emperor. It's not love for his father that was Luke's problem, it was fear of loss, when he overcame as a Jedi to do the moral thing: To save his dad.

      I personally like the idea of balancing the Force in oneself (actual balance or homeostasis and serenity between light and dark). The whole point of the prequels and TLJ was that the Jedi were *too far* in to the light, that they allowed darkness to rise right beneath their noses. Some would even say, which quite possibly could be the case, that the Force allowed the Jedi to fall to start the long process of rebalance. But I also understand why the story would want to keep the morals to using the light and not the dark, but whilst acknowledging and accepting the dark, yet not using its power.

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU 5 лет назад +8

      That was the whole point of this trilogy until RoS came out: balancing The Force. I always believed Rey would become a Grey Jedi (OP: there ARE Grey Jedi in The Old Republic, so they are lore) and her being the last jedi would mean there had to be a grey one. Even her costumes and everything made me believe that and yeah, she became one, but Duel of Fates would've been a much cooler one imo because it expands upon why both sides are dogmatic and fail to capture the essence of The Force.

    • @slashinswingin4369
      @slashinswingin4369 5 лет назад +9

      @@DarkAngelEU What the Rise of Skywalker did was beyond boring. Not only was it a retelling of RotJ, it offered nothing new that was of significance. The movie didn't even bother to explain why the light was better, rather, it just expected audiences to buy a narrow, lazy non-intelligent, unoriginal black and white narrative of the light and dark. At the very least, it could have explored the proper way to address one's inner darkness (i.e. not simply ignoring it and pretending it doesn't exist, as the OT and PT tell us).

    • @DarkAngelEU
      @DarkAngelEU 5 лет назад +3

      @@slashinswingin4369 It is actually addressed in PT bc that's why Anakin becomes a Sith, the Jedi are very dogmatic about accepting and defeating darkness within oneself. They simply tell him to negate those emotions. Then Palpatine comes along, being all "no, use them in your advantage!" and of course, he becomes a Sith because it allows Palpy to tap into him and influence him even further into becoming evil. But now, there is (or at least shouldn't be) an emperor, Kylo definitely isn't strong enough to convince Rey either, so she should be able to become Grey - which in itself requires alot of strength. It's not out of thin air that people either become Sith or Jedi, one contrasts the other and pushes them further away or into the light. With no counterweight, balance is achieved easier within oneself.

    • @slashinswingin4369
      @slashinswingin4369 5 лет назад +3

      @@DarkAngelEU That's exactly what I'm saying: TRoS's Force message/theme should have been to make balance in oneself or to use the light while still accepting the presence of darkness. The PT does address the fault of the Jedi in embedding themselves too deep into the light, and the dangers of. That's the main point of that trilogy. I may have misspoke a little when including the PT with the OT, I admit, but we still lack a thorough message in the films and RoS, unfortunately

It puts some meat on "They win by making you feel like you're alone". But yeah, it stumbles in the last act. Getting the Grey Jedi right is a tricky af psychological high wire act. I think it's about recognizing the dark side has lessons to teach which is very different than becoming half a Sith. For a light side user the dark side isn't where you gain your power but where you confront your weaknesses. I'd have liked TROS more if they pushed Rey closer to the dark side maybe with a real meaningful scene between her and Dark Rey. It would have made her eventual victory more fulfilling.

    I 100% agree with you on that last point StarWarsOnly about how messed up it was for Rey embracing the Dark Side as being a good thing.
    The idea of Rey embracing her anger and the Dark Side goes against the core ideas of Star Wars. The Jedi are the expression of the Force pure and simple. This script repeats the false conception that balance is equality between a Light and Dark Side, rather than the idea of the Dark Side being a corruption of the Force that creates disharmony.
    To put it simply, the Dark Side it represents immorality, it always has. It has only ever caused pain, suffering, oppression, and death. To have Rey embrace such immorality goes against the central themes of Star Wars. The Dark Side is what turned Anakin into a monster. The Dark Side almost did the same to Luke.

    I like the general premise of needing to know about the dark side at least - not necessarily to use it too. But one could argue one of the failures of the original jedi was that they avoided the dark side and were blind to it, allowing the enemy to grow powerful under their noses and even with their aid. Actually, that was the theme I hoped the sequels would explore - how to rebuild the jedi without falling in the cyclical pattern of dark/light wars that plagued the galaxy for 5000 years.
    There are issues with the execution here, but that is also because it had to be embedded in the shitshow that was the sequel trilogy so far, with rey already being overpowered (and this just making it that much worse). It would have been a lot better, I think, if the setting was 'smaller'. No humongous galactic war with yet another empire, but a more personal story of the new jedi against the background of a devastated galaxy trying to recover. Less avengers, more joker.

      Star Wars Resistance, Rouge One, and Star Wars Rebels all brought something new to the table. The Mandalorian is overrated there's to much hype around it for me to care right now. That show is only getting parse because of Baby Yoda. Solo was ok but hey that's just me.
      Star Wars Rebels did a good job on showing what was going on with other worlds and what the empire was doing to them.
      Star Wars Resistance did a good job telling us more about star wars pilots be they Racers, Ties or Resistance. I also enjoyed the fact that none of the main characters were Force Sensitive this time around added a lot more creativity then people give the show credit for.

      I honestly think the balance of the force is up to interpretation. Yes, the sith taking over makes it unbalanced, but that doesn’t mean the other end of the spectrum will balance it. Sure, it can be a simple good vs bad story, but I think that a bit of both sides, the Yin and the Yang, would make the force more complex.
      You could make a case that the rise of the First Order is proof that all light side is unbalanced. Even if one side wins, there will always be those that choose the other.

If you just embrace the light , you make the mistake of acting in arrogance, righteousness is blinding to the point where you can't see your own flaws but instead focus on those of others , whereas embracing the dark means you corrupt yourself by indulging in everything , while indulging is not a crime , not setting boundaries is dangerous . So being balanced means embracing the LIGHT & the DARK !!!

Because as most people pointed out about the prequels, the Dark Side took over and prospered because the Jedi became corrupt. They wanted the Light Side of the Force to be the only way. But no it's just another good guys beat bad guys. God forbid we have challenging & complex storytelling in Star Wars.

    I think it would have been better if kylo ren realise why he was wrong about his family and vader arrives as a force ghost, telling him to listen to his heart and know the truth inside him, that past is like a scar, it always hurts, it always leaves a mark over us, but it is our will that lets us embrace our past and know the truth, that it fades one day. Vader reflects how his choices affected his loved ones and always left a scar on his mind, making him think that there is no good, no hope in him, but his son made him realise the truth and told luke never to make the same mistakes he made. Vader then fades, saying that choice always reflects the conflict, good or evil inside us and we must choose. Kylo Ren, then understands what vader always meant and proclaims himself as a Skywalker. He eradicates the knights of ren, abolishes the darkness inside him and fights snoke's second apprentice, but does not kill her, saying it is not the way of the jedi, and leaves her. He fights snoke along with rey and throws him into the depth of light, but fatally injures himself while defeating him. He lives his last moments seeing the light shining upon the sky, the light of hope, and fades into the light, fades into hope, while rey buries his lightsaber and luke's on the tatooine sands where it began, as the generations of skywalker, new and old, watch over her from the horizon. Rey looks at the beautiful twin rising suns of tatooine, signifying the rise of the jedi, of new hope, as the film ends.

    You’re missing the point with the whole quasi-Lightside, quasi-darkside. The failure of the Jedi (Yoda, Obi-Wan, etc.) in the prequels is that they rejected the dark side entirely. Or rather they rejected traits and characteristics that they believed would draw one to the dark side, such as love and attachment. As we saw with Anakin in the prequels, that mindset is what ultimately led to their destruction. Whereas, the Sith are far too selfish and lean too much into the dark side to truly thrive. There is no middle ground. Theoretically if you could attain that middle ground, you would have balance between the light and the dark. That is what this script is trying to get at. Yoda's order rejected the dark side. The Sith rejected the light. Rey found a balance. I get you don’t like it because it makes Rey seem like more of a Mary-Sue. But the core idea is consistent with the overarching Star Wars story. If Rey was a different character, you probably wouldn’t have an issue with it.
