  • This coarse compound paste doesn't make the keenest edge but the toughest edge like sandpapers do. So when the sharpness is insufficient I don't hesitate to take water stones.

    Thanks for the video! I have watched your knife videos for more than 5 years. All my knives can wavy cut phone book paper and clean cut paper towels. When I sharpen the knives of friends and family, they are amazed and ask how I can get their knives so sharp. I tell them that I learned from a Japanese doctor.

      Rick AB. Agree. Many reviewers out there that have fluff in their reviews. Not to mention unnecessary commentary and profanity. Also, most reviewers review their knives in pristine condition as they cut through printer paper, all the same videos. Wako is definitely one of the most informative and professional knife reviewers out there. He puts his knives to work!

    greetings! I am a young michigan man that is getting into bushcraft and the outdoors as much as I can on my own as my father passed away when I was of age 10. I very much enjoy your videos as they are enjoyable, informative, and many have small bits of Japanese culture, I am very fond and fascinated of such and enjoy learning about it, I would like to learn Japanese, I took a year of Chinese in school and I understand the languages are similar In some ways, Japanese is not an easy language but I am not someone who enjoys easy tasks at all, a challenge is good. anyways, thank you for the stellar content my friend, keep up the good work! -Patrick

    I love virtuovice's sharpening videos and techniques... I've been watching on and off for years and can't believe I hadn't already subscribed. I also enjoy putting a smooth convex edge on most of my knives. Some people are obsessed with consistent angles, which is not a bad skill to have, but I've found that a shoulder on the edge makes cutting most things more difficult.

    You can make all your sheaths EEP. Melt beeswax and apply it it a warmed sheath (oven or heat gun) with a tooth brush. Use a heat gun or blow dryer to even it out as you apply. Buff excess off with a rag. They come perfect. You can custom form each sheath to the knife while warm. Be sure to use beeswax.

    Microscope view is so helpful. But I don't understand when you said stropping the edge with the shoulder made it duller and duller?

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  7 лет назад +6

      The shoulder prohibits low angle stropping to touch the apex. So in order to strop the apex the angle has to be as high as the micro bevel angle with the shoulder. Stropping polishes the apex but rounds it at the same time. So the high angle stropping dulls the edge. Thanks.

    • @sreyemhtes
      @sreyemhtes 7 лет назад

      virtuovice Ok I see. That actually explains a problem I have been having with certain knives I have sharpened and then stropped. I need to pay more attention to the geometry of the micro bevel (or eliminate it if the overall thickness and primary shoulder geometry permit). Thanks. BTW I really like your channel and I Iook forward to your hunting videos coming soon!

      1095 is cheap and 90% as good as any "super steel" as knives are concerned. Take care of it, and you won't have a problem. You can even get into a custom in 1095 for a reasonable price.

    I like the Fallkniven better, in comparison of the steel at least. You may ot may not know, 3G is another name for SG2/R2/SGPS/MC63.

    • @mofomartianp

      3g is Fallknivens proprietary name for a steel which is just laminated 3v.

    • @yeaman992

      mofomartian Not true. Look online. Fallkniven confirmed that they use 3G as a codename for SG2.

    tank's for your videos.
    what's your opinion between the elmax and laminated 3g? if the blade was the same shape or the same knive?
    what in your opinion is stronger and more best edge retention. only between in this too steels what is the best for survival ?
    tank you for all

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  7 лет назад +1

      Fallkniven's bevel geometry just over the edge is quite thick and very difficult to sharpen while I can sharpen Bark River's edge very easily. Now the Elmax Gunny's edge angle is way smaller after my water stone sharpening and I will do deer dressing with it next chance. Then, if the Elmax Gunny doesn't chip at all, I can say Elmax is very tough. I have no intention to make the same angle to the both Elmax Gunny and 3G TK2 to abuse them to check which is the best steel because they are expensive knives and should not be chipped largely to need a large repair. Thanks.

    • @virtuovice

      My most favorite steel so far for all the purposes is CPM-3V because it is proven to be well balanced between hardness and toughness (long edge holding and no chips), and pretty rust resistant. Thanks.

      What make microscope do you use? Is it expensive? Thanks!

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  6 лет назад

      I use a cheap USB microscope for the video, but in order to check the edge conditions before or after stropping or water stone sharpening I use a binocular microscope which is rather expensive by Nikon.

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  7 лет назад

      I have no experience of Elmax for batoning to check its stability. For hunting it has a little micro chippy property in my experience and I have hesitated to use it for batoning. The apex angle of this Elmax Gunny Hunter is a little larger than my usual stone sharpened angle. I want to know if Elmax really has a micro chippy property in a regular angle and if 3G doesn't have it at all. Thanks.
