Bark River Fox River and Gunny knife

  • My demands for my hunting knives have been almost determined. No knife has satisfied them perfectly except for Bark River Fox River and rampless Gunny. Anyway I hope BRKT will give a good sheath to a good knife. Both the crappy and the great sheaths are made by the same Sharpshooter. It's really ridiculous!! But over that ridicule I love their Fox River and Gunny most of all the hunting knives out there almost definitely.

I must have watched this vid 10 times since it was made and it always brings a smile to my face. To see someone enjoy their collection so much is inspiring. I have just purchased my own gunny hunter in purple, green and gold elder burl and i absolutely love it. Keep up the vids doc, they are informative and enjoyable.

    Sensei Wako,
Thank you so much for sharing all of your knowledge, hunting trips and inviting us into your home. Your videos, by far, are truly the best on YT!! Your extensive knowledge in reference to knives, has helped us tremendously over the years. I'm sure I share the same sentiments, of so many others. Just wanted to take the time to say, "THANK YOU". Wish you and yours, good health and continued success.

Whoever loved it? I think it adds just coldness and heaviness. I feel like 3V Fox River edge geometry is shallower than A2 one. I am nervous about its chipping. Anyway they put the bolster to increase the weight IMO. In the 3V Bravo1 case they increase its geometry and add the weight. Their way on each model is completely different. The field test will say what it is. Thanks.

The ramp removal service is for free at the stocking dealers. The ramp location is ridiculously close to the handle and its gimping is ridiculously sharp and aching. It's not a practical thumb ramp at all but just an aesthetic design. They explain it as a fire steel striker or for a military purpose. But I cannot believe it at all. It seems completely useless for any purposes and interferes the thumb stretching onto the spine very badly. Thanks.

I once owned a small mosaic pinned Bamboo handle of Fox River. It also had green liners. It was a fabulous one and I traded it out for the Mr. Itou hunting knife. Anyway I agree with you. The large aluminum pins look odd. Even the pins will be one of their sales tactics as well as exotic wood scales or colorful liners. The next batch will be with the thinner brass pins again. Thanks.

TK2 is a difficult knife. Its 3G holds long and won't take chipping. It's a very good steel like Bark River A2. But it comes with a micro V edge from factory. As long as it has it, it won't take stropping, and we need to remove it if we like stropping more than stone sharpening. So I gave up purchasing any more Fallknivens and my eyes are only for Bark Rivers in A2 tool steel. Thanks.

Bravo1 is large for hunting. Fox River is only for hunting. Gunny is versatile. I would choose A2 rampless Gunny in Lignum Vitae handle. I am used to taking care of A2 edge. Lignum Vitae seems like pretty dense and tough wood. I like beautiful exotic wood , but sometimes burl wood can be weak. Thanks.

Fox River is a bit more efficient skinner. And I like the clean design of Gunny as well. But each has each problem. Current A2 Fox River seems to have long and thick handle scales. 3V Fox River and 3V Gunny have thick geometry and a micro bevel to make a large edge angle like 30 degrees. A2 Fox River and A2 Gunny will come in a zero grind 25 degree convex edge in high probability. Their products can have problems at times. Thanks.

Hey Wako,I haven't been writing much lately so I thought I would drop a little note on you.I think your knife collection is great.Every man needs some kind of hobby to occupy his time.I love the shape of both Gunny and Fox River,Bark River. They have some nice sheaths too.It is hard for me to pick a favorite from these knives but I tend to lean towards the wood scales on your knives. The dark wood handle with the scales is my favorite.I think you called it Lace wood..I am always glad to see you.

3V Fox River has a different handle than A2 one. More contoured and longer. Its front end is a bit annoying in side holding compared to the short handle of A2 version. The ramp removal service will cost you $15 to $20 at any BRKT dealer when you purchase it. Of course BRKT will take it directly from you. Thanks.

The Handy Hunter has a lower grind and a shallower belly than BJ125. It doesn't seem so sharp nor so useful as BJ125. Scagel Medium Hunter is pretty long but doesn't have a choil. BJ125 is just good as Fox River in choking up holding. So I don't like the both knives personally. Thanks.

have to agree with you virtuovice about the fox river sheath.fox river is one of my favourite bark river knives .bought one new 12 months ago, knife was fantastic, sheath was so dry and too small for the knife.even though i was extremely careful the knife sliced right through the side of the sheath and ruined it on my first outing.ended up having a custom kydex sheath made, which is pretty ridiculous considering bark river are reasonably costly knives

I prefer Bravo1 by far as a survival knife. As a hunting knife Bravo1 is a bit heavy and bulky. ESEE3 is good. But ESEE4 has a short handle for the blade length and it always compelled me to choke up onto its narrow choil. So, I got the TKC custom handle on it. Thanks.

P.S. My understanding of a honing steel is that it recovers an edge by realigning it without abrasion. Thus to extend sharpness between times when an abrasive process is truly needed. You use the strop for regular maintenance, does it perform the same function, I get the impression it is still mild abrasion & thus still removing blade material?

I think in order to get the knife you are looking for, you should try making your own knife. ther are so many videos on youtube that show you how to make a knife. as much hunting that you do in the off season is when you should try to make a wako version, seeing how much you know about knives, I think you would make a good knife.

K6 is better for skinning than K2. Also, Bark River changed the steel in the new Fox River knives. They are using CPM3V instead of A2. They said it has better edge retention than A2 tool steel. I wish you have a chance to test one with CPM3V.

    Hi Virtuo,
Enjoying your enthusiasm, and that you are speaking from real world experience.
A question please, the first Gunny you show with the red maple handle, the shape of the top of the handle up where your thumb is when you pinch hold the knife is different to the handle shape on the other Gunny knives you show. I cannot see anywhere on the Bark River site where they show this handle shape - why is it different? Does it have a particular name or is it a different model? Is it better for the pinch grip than the normal Gunny handle shape?
    Thanks,
    Gus

    • @virtuovice
      @virtuovice  9 лет назад

I sold off that Gunny. Then the buyer didn't like the odd handle and sent it back to BRKT. And BRKT said to him that the odd handle was their mistake and replaced it to a normal handle for free. That had to be a trial model or such. Thanks.
