How Much Horsepower does a 2000 Trans Am Firehawk make on the dyno???

- We have a stock Trans Am Firehawk on the dyno for the first time. The only thing different on it is the mufflers. So we opened up the tune to see that it had already been tuned before. We were able to improve on those numbers by 10hp and 12 tq. It was such a beautiful car!
Back in 98, We had a stock Firebird Formula we used for Autocross. K&N air filter and SLP cat back. Dyno ed at 317hp at sea level and good air. It also ran 13.35@ 107.9 MPH at Capital raceway nearly at sea level. It also got 28mpg highway. I miss that car
Such a good looking car. When I was a teenager I used to literally dream of having one of these. I was ws6 crazy lol.
@Curt Curtis still hate cobras lol
@Curt Curtis one thing about the 4.6, you can pick it out of a crowd. It sounds so good
Yep as a teenager use to drool over red firehawk in my town. Great looking car! My friend had 97 mustang Woodward dream cruise edition. We had lot of fun in high school lol
My dad and I test drove one for the fun of it, couldn't afford it just had nothing else to do, I had my learners permit. Dad let me drive it on the back roads, got to a 100 real quick lol, love the ws6, I want black on black 6 speed 2002, gonna be worth big bucks one day
@@rrlandservice9017 a 6 speed? Eww. Plus, nobody goes fast in a manual.
Remember when these were new, loved them. I had a 1995 formula 6 speed was a great car.
Nice! I had a '93 Formula 6-speed around the time these LS1 cars were getting popular. Always wanted a Firehawk but I was young and they were out of my price range. Of course having an LT1 I was behind all the LS cars. Bolt-ons and a 175 shot took care of that and made sure I was safe against most LSs that may have rolled up beside me back then. :)
Seems about right. They were 330hp from crank. Firehawks were my dream car since 1992. I still would love to own an LS powered Firehawk, or even a WS6. I did have a 96 Trans Am, LT1, 6 speed, in 96. It was pretty fast back then for a 242whp car. Great video!
242 whp is lower then facrtory lmao
@@ThatNoFbody-ch9ky that is always the case.
@@ThatNoFbody-ch9ky a 96 lt1 was rated at 285 at the crank 242 rwhp is spot on what they dyno an auto would probably do a little less.
That's why we tune... so much left on the table.
Beautiful Bird!
Those cars still look fast sitting still twenty years later.
I'll never forgive GM for ending Pontiac. 😢
Never !
Pontiac Fisher division simple was the best.
I wish I could get a modern trans am ws6 but settling for a new ss 1le isn't bad. Close enough I guess.
Wait till gm goes all electric lol
It was obama that ended pontiac.

Beautiful Firehawk. I had a 93 FireHawk, LT1, M6 Trans , Mac midlengths ,
160 thermostat, PCMforkess tune. It made
309 rwhp and 342 rwtq
It’s on my channel.
Nice video. My tuner targets 12.5-12.8 AFR up here @ 4,500 FT, seems to be a good balance of power and reliability. Timing-wise, we can usually get away with running up to 34-37 degrees on N/A cars running 91.
I've never seen an LS motor make power up that high in the timing. Elevation may have something to do with it but at some point, they stop making power. Whether it holds more or not is irrelevant. If it stops making power at 25, that's where you leave it. Like I said, the elevation may have something to do with it.
I make power stock ls1 at 29° at 6500 altitude on 91
Running at 12.5 air fuel with just one of my old ls1 tunes that I have in my archives . NA
Oh, and at my Southwest Florida house where my Z06 resides... I can get crazy power out of an ls1 at 32° on 93 pump gas.
MyLS7 Vette is at 34° and idles at stop lights at normal temperature in August down there then lights up like a F18 heading to the skies. What I'm trying to say is it all depends on what's inside, what altitude and what fuel you run... apples to oranges.
As long as we all have fun from A to B!
Bone stock SS amd WS6 cars (having the smaller factory free flowing muffler with polished tips) 01-02s with t56 and ls6 intake manifolds with paper air filter will lay down 297 to 309whp max from what I've personally have straped down to the dynojet at a shop i use to worked at. Firehawks having some SLP extras.. I'd imagine more than 309whp...? Of course I'm responding before watching the video... But all LS1 motors with LS6 intake and thru t56 trans with full bolt ons and tune will make 350-360 ish whp. Excluding roller rockers or SLP rocker arms. 4L60E cars about 10-15whp less.
I've always loved those cars! I may need to purchase one one day and just do it because I've loved them since they came out in 98 an old friend of mine purchased a sunset orange brand new from the dealership he put polished turgue thrust Boyd Coddingtons awesome!!! Installed Slp from the headers back not to obnoxious it was a six speed beautiful car. Nice car, clean! I have a 1999 Camaro SS SLP center exhaust with 198,000 miles. Still have the stock spark plug that I was too lazy to change back passenger side one. Owned the car since for the last 7-8 years at around 101,000 miles only use European Mobile 1 oil 0-40W. These LS1's love that oil! quiet when starting. Sadly the rear bumper clear coat is peeling.
Hah, that back plug! My arm is too big to get to it from underneath. Forget it from the top. Was able to get the wire changed, but left the plug alone at 60K miles.
You just need a ton of extensions, and a wobbly socket. It's not that bad. Not like the LT1 Fbody.
Nice I actually bought my 2000 10th Anniversary Firehawk from Ed Hamburger n Mark Schekle
I just hit 150,000 today in my 98 Trans Am. LS1 motors can easily hit 300,000 with regular maintenance.
Wow clean car and stock in 2021!!!!! Amazing.
My 2001 Z28 M6 made 324rwhp/341rwtrq back in the day stock. LS1 cars were so underrated it’s crazy.
I drove my 2002 WS6 for about a year before I completely rebuilt it. It was just dog slow at ET 13.8 @98mph... replaced entire drivetrain (SC LS-3 and a 12 bolt) ET now is 10.03 @ 124mph.. Its a daily driver. Stupid expensive to gain 3 seconds..
Emissions from that time absolutely killed the potential those cars had. It does take a lot of money to get 10 seconds no matter what it is.
Should have gone the 5.3 turbo route.

Got a bult 99 T/A lq N/A 408 strocker 572 whp. I get compliments all the time.
I bought a 02 ws6 Trans am that's stock. There were some mild changes in 01 and 02 on the ls1. Ls6 intake and bigger injectors along with eliminating the egr I believe. I like mine stock but would be open to a tune and exhaust mods. The factory exhaust pipes are actually flat on the bottom side to prevent scraping.

My 2001 Z06 made 352/348 SAE with like 16,000 miles, totally stock. Paper air filter and all, just had the zip tie mod. @@rotaxtwin yeah the stick has less parasitic loss than the 4L60's. Conservative estimate about 3 to 5%
@@rotaxtwin it does but the 289 rwhp 6 speed the guy above was referring to was likely a pre 2000 ls car which even though rated the same made less power because they didn't have the factory ls6 intake the later cars had plus this one in the video was a firehawk which was a little stronger with a higher crank rating from the factory hence why it likely did 280ish to the tires through an auto. A stick firehawk would probably be 300+ the later cars even more.

I have a pewter 2000 NHRA Trans Am myself and love it. It's not anything performance wise over a regular TA besides badges and a few options that you could get on a regular one but it was a factory installed option (1SH) and that still makes them rare cars. What a good looking Pontiac. Knowing not much, I am surprised the hp numbers are that modest even for a mostly unmolested LS1 v8. It then occurred to me that our (fmr) 2012 Mustang 3.7 V6 was "officially" rated at 305 hp (non-dyno). Jay Leno was gifted a (then new) '02 Firebird WS6 manual and I just couldn't help but like and respect the car. These "corporate modular motors" mostly leave me cold and uninspired so-to-speak.

I love that Leno video. He really appreciates all kinds of cars.
Forgive me but he just said that there wasn't anything done to the T/A pulling low horsepower. Isn't a FIREHAWK Trans-Am supposed to be a top of the line in the upper echelon of being better than stock? Seems just a regular T/A in this video.
The Firehawk had more power than the base Trans Am's. It was more of a video that showed the base cars didn't make huge numbers. They were always CRANK hp. Parasitic loss always eats it up. This was also a 4L60 car. The 4L60's are KNOWN for being heart breakers.

Engine tech has come a long way since then, my Focus ST makes more torque with a simple tune from ford performance on a 2 liter turbo engine. I also get more than 32 MPG. I get the best of both worlds.
Engine tech has improved a lot in that time needless to say but in this cars defense, despite age, its biggest setback is that slush box. The M6 cars were much more stout when it comes to making decent power.
From a MPG perspective the LS1 isn’t quite as bad as you might think. With some break in miles I’ve known some folks to pull high 20’s on average on the highway depending on how they were driving.

Tunes always help over the stock calibration. There is torque management involved as well as being able to add more power through proper timing and air fuel calibrations. Stock tunes aren't set up for power as much as basic 50 state drive ability.
