Here is the Targa of the new 992 generation of #911, as the left field choice for #Porsche aficionados! Perhaps one of the most bizarre stories isn’t he automotive world, the Targa was born out of fear of auto regulations. In the previous 356 gen to the 901, the convertible Porsche was a big seller particularly in the USA. But with the 911, Porsche feared the NHTSA would ban the sales of convertibles. Thus they created a drop top with a permanent steel roll bar: the targa. "Targa" - shield in Italian - came from the Targa Florio sports car road race in Sicily, in which Porsche had scored seven victories.
From 1967 to 1982, this was the only way to get a convertible 911, until the cabriolet eventually debuted.
So the First Targa set the style in 1967 by way of the stainless steel clad roll bar, but later from 993 onwards the Targa saw a big departure in its form, much to its detriment. It turned into essentially a panoramic roof with sliding top, it didn’t look distinctive vs the coupe, and the centre of gravity was higher thanks to the mechanism.
It wasn’t till 991 that the Targa regained it’s desireabilty and returned to the aesthetics of the original Targa, with a hugely complex two piece folding system. One that carries through into our car today.
It consists of two parts, front soft top and rear glass, which has been further weight optimised. It takes only 19 seconds to open and close, and must be done at standstill. And it looks incredible, especially with the new satin black option on our car today!
So how different is this to the standard 4S? It still has 450BHP, 530NM and the 0-60 is an impressive 3.4 seconds on launch, which is the same as the cabriolet. But how much does the targa add or detract from the experience?Today we explore:
- History of the 911 Targa
- Targa roof operation
- Exhaust sound
- Interior review
- First drive Review
- Conclusion

Only had the car for a few hours, but made the most of it for you! 😈 So weird but cool having a German Press car in the UK!!
Almost at 200k subs, thanks for the support guys! 🙏🏼😃 And check out our sponsors The Last Coat for so great products, use my code RBRTLC20 🔥😎
Exterior color please Carrara or just white !!!!
To me this is the best looking car in the world for now. It’s like an athlete in a tailored suit. Classic look. Masculine stance. Phenomenal performance. And the right number of doors. It’s everything a vehicle should be.
The Targa is my fav 911. I remember my uncle had one back in the late 90's and I would always ask him to take me for a drive haha
soubido nice memory!
I bet he did
I watch this dude because of the historical details he puts in
Podge Dimagiba glad you enjoy dude!
I would agree, very definitive and comprehensive 👍🏽
Totally agree. Well done Raz.
Your editing/graphics are always impressive.
Matthew Williams thanks Matthew!
Never really cared for the Targa but WOW that thing looks great!!!
Me neither, but 991 onwards I was sold!
The Targa is my favourite, it may not be the fastest but does it need to be when it looks so good.
The White/Blk colorway is beautiful on the 911...😍😍😍
I know this isn't the purest 911 but I absolutely love the Targa: it's a gorgeous looking car!
i just love itttttt
@Raberd Therdterng Neither can you. 😂
Targa has always been a bit of a favourite. Looks gorgeous.
New subscriber here. You deserve way more subscribers. Hope to see you at a million one day.
AzSTMPR Almost at 200, and fast 😃 Thanks for joining the family!
Truly one of the best Porsche videos I’ve ever seen! I also agree that the Targa is the one to get. Thanks.
I wasn’t sure to watch this video or not but at the end I did. The way you describe cars, the animations and so on are great...you’re my favourite so far. Good job!
Your extreme passion is very obvious, and the way of presentation is marvellous... Unlike other reviews I get a feeling I am getting the car reviewed in our backyard garage... It also has a high informative content rather than focussing on deliberate pros n cons.
0:12 - 0:17 oké, that animation was impressive and epic. Well done!
That is some insane production value man!
Excellent review! You gave the most thorough input that I was looking for. Thank you
After the GT3 Touring and 918 Spyder, this is my favorite Porsche.
Phenomenal editing in every episode! Great job, boys
First time here... And I’m subscribed. The special effects make this channel so unique.
I hope the turbo will be available with the Targa!!! BOSS!!!
👏👏👏!!!
I REALLY REALLY REALLY love how you broke down the history and legacy of the Targa in your video. It was fantastic to watch and listen. Excellent production Sir!
The Targa is the one I would get if I was to go buy either a 992 or 991 911 today.
Another excellent review. Personally I’m now only watching RBR and harry for the honest reviews, both together gives me the impression and information about a car that I need to make an informed decision re purchase.
All the others are now for comic value only!
Well done Raz👍
Great video, great content....I own a 991 Targa myself and I loved listening to the history of this model. One small observation : Targa in Italian = Plate (like a car plate...) and not Shield. Nonetheless the name is related to the legendary Targa Florio race in Sicily that Porsche won many times
this, but with the Turbo S hips (no wing though) and drivetrain.. please, Porsche..
Thomas Emler who knows! Maybe they will
Remove Before Race since chances are you see this comment, I just wanted to say, that you have a fantastic channel. I really enjoy your videos and the way they are made is outstanding and very entertaining. They are unmatched in regard of detailed information about technology and history of the cars.. fantastic work. Being Swiss the only thing that‘s missing for me is footage on twisty mountain roads.. 😁
Nicely done! Love your creativity with the graphics. Looking forward to more videos. BRAVO!!!
Left hand drive is actually the norm for the significant majority of the world.
your reviews are always more fun to watch
Great review !! I made the decision way back in February to put a deposit down on a new targa 4 s which is due for delivery mid October i only dreamed of owning an 911 and its been a long time coming, and to honest i’ve spent too much time worrying what people would think and not that i have worked hard and sacrificed much to afford one , but this review helped and reassured me that id made the right choice from the new range of 911..
Mind blowing visualization and awesome drown shots..
he's right, the targa used to be a "who would buy such a weird looking car" to "this is the one to get" Porsche. cant quite put my finger on the specific changes that made it look real good in the latest version. tho i think the increased size of the 911 helped proportion the targa top to the entire silhouette of the car, but its more than that too
Can you elaborate on why there will be more left hand drive cars in UK due to Covid please. Great video as always
Fantastic content and editing, great historical details, it’s always a pleasure. Thanks for sharing your passion!
Was really considering getting a 911. It's something classic about Porsche's handling
993 my Fave 911, but in Targa, yes so true. The 993 is GOPPING as a Targa, the 992 is perfect as the Targa.
I think the Targa is the best Porsche
Lovely stuff Raz you’re a legend
It’s amazing how you could get all of these Porsches for this video!!
Oh my goodness!! Looks so good !!
all the 992 trims looking great so far, cant wait for the GTS and the GT3 ! T
arga is just for older 911 owners i feel, looks very artsy tho.
aviator2492 Hoping to be on launch for those next! Fingers crossed
Thank you for the look back and comments about 992 Targa 4S. I have ordered a 911 Targa 4 GTS. No allocation yet but super excited about the car. Shark Blue - so looking forward to a Euro delivery as well. Anything else you can share good or bad on the 911 Targa 4S?
Always wished they make a turbo targa !
The graphics you use are bloody awesome. Really good to see. Well done.
Can you tell us spec please? Exterior color? Wheel finish?
You didn’t mention the annoying buffeting. The wind noise is a deal breaker for dome
Imagine a Turbo Targa, like the infamous BB rainbow Targa
Great video. Very well done. I liked the history lesson and all of the video effects. I just orders 992 Turbo S, delivery in November. Can’t wait.
Love and appreciate the history lesson
You and Joe make so much sense. Love watching all your videos.
Lovely, but extremely heavy. Heaviest 911 ever I think. Great video as usual, thanks.
Great production skills!!
Amazing aerial and road shots, like the new angles 👍👍👍
Apart from the Speedster... This is the prettiest car in the world!
Targa in Italian doesn't mean shield at all... It means"plate" and comes from the Targa Florio race. Shield is "scudo". Cheers from Italy
>scudo
Like the roman shield ?
@@AB-fr2ei precisely
Fiat, and Triumph used it long before porsche. Designed by Michelotti. Tr4a.
Great video! Subscribed! Keep up the great work - cool graphics comparing the 991 buttons in the 992 cabin
Went to order the wheel cleaner. You should point out to all your UK viewers which is where you are based after all that the iron off company is based in the states. Tried ordering it with your discount code. It went from around $15 to $87 with postage. Forget that !!!
Hey we want a TURBO S drive 😏!!!
36 Mohamed Khan coming!
Love the quality of your content RBR 👍🏿
Appreciate the drone shots.
Yep, the Targa looks awesome as specced here -- but a really well optioned 2S convertible would be lighter/slightly nimbler and less cramped in the back. Really looking forward to see how the GTS turns out, as that would be my first choice.
How do you have so few subscribers you deserve so much more
That iron remover stuff ruins rubber trim. Found that out the regular way.
best car to collect
Now thats a high quality video jeez
you’re getting wind noise because you didn’t put the wind deflector up. you have to put it up manually
Yes, and he didn’t know apparently
Good review and no blasphemies!
Really nice white with black
Love your content so much, thank you!!
073426 073426 my pleasure!
Beautiful,my dream car☺
Like you said, why wouldn’t you pick this over the coupe?
Perfect 👌
Steve D Simply gorgeous
great review !!! nice way of presenting cars!! congrats!!
Great vid 👍 but what was the connection between Covid & a left hand drive car again ?
kit lai Travelling for international press trios is becoming restrictive due to quarantine sanctions, so German manufacturers are sending cars to us!
Ah.....nice one ☝️
Derisory but stunningly cool One of my preferred 911 variant
My fav Porsche .. but I need center locking wheels 😊
#TargaThursdays for the win!
Iceberg 47 damn right!
A beauty
Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦 Happy to be a new subscriber ... 😊 Thanks for reviewing my dream car, though I’d go all the way with a Targa Heritage Design edition!
I ordered one with navy top!!
I love it a lot .

It's hard to get excited about the sound of new 911s.
In real life it sounds much better, with more bass. It's a deep sound below 4.5k rpms, onwards sounds more flat 6'ish. It doesn't sound much better than an N/A 3.4 or 3.8, but it still sounds great, atleast for me. This new engine is loud but not obnoxiously loud. It's enough to make it echo through a small city and create the sports car presence. (Telling from my experience)
dream car!
Nice review and comparison with old and the new cars ,I loved the targa ,I once owned a 1978 Super Carrera , factory turbo Bodied Targa in GP white with black leather interior with Red top dash for a decade, I tested new one after seeing the return of the original targa hoop in 991 form and then again in 992 form ,Car just felt too fat for the A roads ,The old cars it was just the shoulders and hips bulging out like muscles with slim waste line ,I didn't like the floating digi screens that light up like a xmas tree, too much info , lovely car but they've lost that jet airplane sound and cockpit style feel and drive with the 5 dials and a 915 Mechanical gearbox. It really feels like a robot now
and I thought my 997 turbo was a big back in the day when it was new.
someho managed some sound with pops and bangs despite the OPF
Je viens de prendre possession de la mienne, deuxième Targa. Voiture fantastique.
Fantastic review as per usual on you channel 👌
Great post.. have just ordered a Jet Black Targa 4S ;-)
Completely missed out the 964 series Targa 2 & 4!
OK dude...what's the color of that first cars blue!
O-M-G! 🤤
Love to know your take on the new 992 GTS
what a great review!! thanks
Would have got the targa but I couldn’t pass up on the HP of the TT
Best channel
My choice would be base 911 Carrera 2 with aero kit and a stage one ECU tune taking it to 500bhp
I love this car!
new sub... so cool. History and amazing editing. Big thumbs up.
Very well done ,thanks.
What a Car..WOW !!!
