Nice i love it i learned alot bro real shit keep it up...
Appreciate that ..tc
This video is so underrated... Needs more views honestly... The effort is much appreciated.
Wow thank you
Lol at least Audi gave you a hint about the 4 piston rings with their logo.
😂
ROFL!
Finally someone who can tell me if I have a gen 1, 2 or 3 engine. So happy to see that I've got a gen 3 without those oil issues!
Not without, just lesser.
A gen 3 burning through 1 liter of oil in 6K miles seems like a lot to me.
@@jmt8706official It really isn't that much, it takes me like half a year to drive 6k miles, topping up 1L of oil every half year is not a problem for me.
Gen 1, owned since 2011. Tuned since day 1 and haven't had a single issue with oil consumption
@@itsonlyniles tell me more. did you change the pistons?
EA888 has a cast iron block, only the head and pistons are made from aluminum :)
Right Cast Iron GJL-250 !
OK I'm not loosing my mind 😂
Love your work man! Glad someone has finally done a history of these engines, some really fun and cool cars have had them.
Thanks. It was long time coming to summarize it..Next we need to explore 3B generation deeper..
I've watched this videos over the last 6 months 5 times now and every time I watch it I learn something new, its really informative, superb video mate .... Regards Andy
Glad I found this channel 3 years late . I've stayed up late daily researching this engine every night contemplating my path. Purchased my 09 a4 Quattro with a caeb . almost 4 years ago . Was my first almost new car was my dream car. Put $4,000 down and first oil change car started smoking horribly wile running. 123,400 miles with the internet and friend I misdiagnosed it as a bad turbo . Purchased a $1800 non stock great turbo . Installed and problem still existed. Some lessons are expensive .
Superb video my friend! Keep up the great work.
Great video man. Amazing info and great job putting this together. Exactly what I was looking for in terms of info on engine issues
Thank you so much for your video! I've been looking for all this detail and you delivered! Thanks mate!
Good information mate, thanks for the effort 👍🏾
Really good video! Thank you!
Wow thanks appreciate that
Great video👍 I have a 2012 A4 TFSI EA888 gen 2. My engine isn’t mounted horizontal though🤔The excessive oil usage because of the faulty tensioners is definitely the Achilles heel other than that, 193,000 miles with virtually no issues.😃👍
Wicked documentary seems like you have allot of these engine.
Yes, I have build gen 1, 2 and fixed gen 3 seen on the video, this ea888 follows me everywhere :)
Driving without seat belt is the real issue with these engines...
Great video, would love to learn more about the Gen3 engines
Thank you
Really good detailed video dude. Cheers very much.
Very thorough discussion. Thanks.
A no nonsense video highlighting the important bits.. I'm gladish mines is gen3 but will be doing timing chain and water pump to be sure.. Its got audi fsh but hey they put rubbish oil in from asda.. Its 5 40 for me and the liqui/moly additive.. Had Honda type r b4 and even Honda recommended 5/40. And it used less between changes.. Great video.. 👌👍🏻
Great Job mate! You forgot the BZB :) I have one in my Skoda Octavia
Thank you for your time.
Great video , you are very informed and passionate about this ea888 engines . Well done, very useful info. Keep up the good work
Awesome video very informational 💯💯
Great video, I really enjoyed it. Thanks very much. I don’t understand why my MY2016 Golf GTI Mk7 engine CHHA Generation 3 wasn’t mentioned though?
Peter
great explanations
The greatest vids
Thank you
great video mate i have the 14 tiguan with the cczb engine 155kw
Great explanation! Super sexy too😊 Audi/ VW engines are getting better over time
The first problem was that they didn't ask the japanese to make the chain drive
I think you skipped the actual 1st generation for the 2.0T (TFSI). I am driving an Audi A4 2.0 TFSi from 2005, engine code BGB, which is considered to be the first gen for FSI / TFSI engines (2004-2008). Which gets commonly mistaken for the 2nd gen, which is from 2008-2012 and the 2nd gen are notorious for their oil consumption and have been recognised as a factory fault and therefore a large percentage were factory recalled and fixed by Audi - as you well described :).
I would consider your title to be EA888 Gen 2, 3, 4, 4B.
Edit: Just found that the 2004-2008 FSI/TFSi engines were considered to be EA113, so you you have listed them correctly.
Once again, well described and I enjoyed watching.
Thanks mate for the video ! I never was very good with engine sounds, i have a mk 6 GTI and i thought the chain noise was abnormal it's not loud it makes the same sound as yours but got me worried for nothing 🤣
Thank you so much for the video, very imformative. But now I wonder what things the EA888 EVO4 has been improved compared to the Gen3.
God Bless You MAn !
EA888 Gen 2. Best engine for me.
Gen1 ea888 are BYT and Bzb engine from 2007 and they where Availble in audi a3 8p seat leon 1p and passat 1.8 tsi
does the small pistons has issues with the 1.8t fsi cabb?
Thank you i been looking all over info on the difference because i have a 2012 Jetta Gli Gen 1 CCT 6spd Manual and i'm actually wondering if on my car i can swap to a gen 3 engine or gen 2.
I love my Ea888 in my 6 speed a4
Cool video man ,a lot of good info, just improve the audio
Iv got the gen 2 EA888 automatic Audi A3 2.0TFSI Quattro s line 3 door. 200bhp. I hope to take it up to 320 one day.
Very informative video! Why ist the Gen3b so noisly? Thought the chain problems were solved. Are there any common issues left with this generation?
new generations will make new problems. new problems cam shaft and lubes
thank you
So is there anything to keep in mind with the gen 3b engine? Any recommendations?
Good info, but after what year they "fixes" the excessive oil consumption? 2012? 2014? what about VW?
Please tell me if CABB and CDHB has been affected by the high oil consumption. Im about to get one a4 b8 1.8 tfsi 158hp this weekend. Thank you
I have a 63 Plate Audi s3 8v pfl which engine do I have need to find out which thermostat/water pump I need ??
Pls reply. So in gen 2 they fixed the oil consumption and only the tensioner has problems? Thank you
I’m choosing between i20n and 2020 polo gti
What’s your optioning please for less problems
Hey mate, ive just buyed Skoda Octavia mk2 facelift vRS 2.0 TSI 2009 . I noticed that you didnt mentioned mark as Skoda and Seat. My question is, do you know which gen. Engine i have in my Skoda?
Looking to buy octavia vrs 245 any tips?
Great review overall but you might need to correct this the smaller pistons were actually on later Gen1 CAE, CDN and CND and earlier Gen2 CC engines but earlier Gen1 CAB, CDH actually had larger pistons ..and seem to be holding better after 10+ years on that oil gulping issue.
For this reason most people actually generalise to saying the smaller pistons were more of a Gen2 issue than Gen1 or Gen3....
thanks for the input dave not everybody is so deep knowledgeable as you.
exactly
Good catch👍, my early Gen 1 burns less than 700ml between 7500km oil changes
... that was using Castrol Edge 5W40. My last 2 oil changes I switched to Castrol Edge 5W50 and the oil consumption went down to 400ml over the 7500 km oil change. Essentially using only one 5 litre bottle of Castrol Edge 5W50 between oil changes
thank you bro! your video is very helpful! Can i ask the question? My car is 2013 Q3, The Engine code is CCZC, Do you know the tensioner part no. is 06H(old) or 06K(new)? because some say the new tensioner(06K) is fixed the timing chain issue.
I noticed oil dipstick on GenIII A4. I want one to mine, partnumber for that would be nice to know. Thanks for great video!
We bought a 2014 VW EOS online. We are the third owner's. Vehicle had 39,500 miles and very frequent service. First thing I noticed is the exhaust pipe outlet is lined with a very think Soot. I think it's 1/16". The engine runs fine, no visible smoke and it's quiet but that Soot must mean very bad news. My 2002 SAAB 9-5 has 171K miles and the exhaust outlets have zero residue and are slightly rusting. The SAAB never burns any oil. We don't know if the EOS is burning oil yet? We only have put 700 miles on the car and are using Motul 5w-40. I would assume this Soot deposit means it's shot. Should we dump this EOS?
Thanks
In some places they are saying that the bad oil piston rings are an issue of the gen2 engines.
You said that is a gen1. Are you sure about that? THANKS!!!
The B stands for Buddack. It's the VW engineer that modified the Miller cycle to be more efficient and driveable. 3B and 3 couldn't be more different. One is Buddack cycle and the other is Otto cycle.
Based on what you said, it seems like the Gen3 engines are a lot more robust with the PCV / tensioner issues being resolved. Is there anything else to watch out for?
Yes, if you go to my playlist the one with Audi A4 b8.5 rebuild it has few videos on this Gen 3 - all issues dealt with that engine. We had oil leak, we had entire water pump failure. I am sure there is more but overall these are issues that we can all do ourselves unlike issues presented by Gen 1 where pushing it off the cliff sounds most suitable
Great video mate, very interesting to see the evolution of that engine.
Thanks !!!
Hi,
I want to buy an A5 8T of 2016 next year. So you mean there no problems with the piston rings?
do ea888 gen 3b engines still constumes oil ? CYMC engine to be exact.
hello! I have a 2010 audi a3 1.8TFSI with CDAA engine. I have the error of excessive oil consumption?
I've Had the Gen 2 in MK6 GTI 6SPD that engine was beautiful and awesome many smiles per gallon (until the tensioner gave out cost me 3k fix bc machine shop) If you are getting a MK6 (gen 2) get after 2012 you'll be good or make sure it had it replaced if not low ball the dealer. Now I have Audi 8V Quattro gen 3 engine I love it very smooth and I have a DP and Boost controller it is like a spaceship lol I'm scared to feel what a tune would do lol!
Thanks for sharing. You have nice car, 8Vs are popular to power up, they are strong, they can take a lot and that's the reason why they are one of the most tuned vehicles in that range.
Mk6 gti only came with gen1 or fsi for ED35 or R
Great video, gen 3 sound like a diesel
Yes sadly some do and is common even in other gens.
Mark 8s with the 2.0 TSI have the Evo4 engine. Slightly bigger turbo (not from IHI anymore). Cylinder block is cast iron on all EA888, one of the best traits of it.
sorry so what is the problem of 2020 Q5 45tfsi 2.0T EA888? thanks
Hello. I have a question DKZA engine is that a ea888 engine ? And is it same internals like golf R and Audi S3 ?
Any review on the new EA888 Evo 4 engine?
I believe that's ahead of us...
can you rebuild gen1 with gen3 components? are they compatible?
Nice video, very good info. The Gen3 in your Audi is sounding very rough, I have the 'same engine' in my GTI (CHHA) and doesn't have such noises.
That camshaft must be suffering
Turbo fuel stratified injection (TFSI) is a trademark of the Volkswagen Group for a type of forced-aspiration ("turbo") engine where the fuel is pressure-injected straight into the combustion chamber in such a way as to create a stratified charge. First generation TFSI engines was produce in 2004, for exaple: in audi A4 b7 engine code BPG BWT (162 kW or 220HP) or Golf Mk5 engine code BWE (147kW or 200HP)
I mean to dumb down what you said it’s almost a diesel style combustion style but for a gas car.. I have an A3 2019 2.0t and even I’m dreading if it will go wrong
is it possible to swap engines, replacing gen 1 with a gen 2 in the same car
Do you know what gen is in the audi a4 35 tfsi 150 ps ?
My 2015 AUDI A3 1.8tfsi has problem 'EPC light & code P0341 / P0016 any help with this problem??
Hi thanks for the great video. I know you have said CDNC is a 1st gen but just wondering if this is true for the 2013 B8.5 facelift model manufactured in germany, as was told this was a 2nd gen?
Also forgot to mention it is a quattro avant. Not sure if that makes a difference or not...
Also trying to figure this out, from what I've learned I believe the cdnc is a 2nd gen however still plagued by the piston ring issues.
I want to buy an Audi A5 2016 engine CJEE so they have Problems?
Hey just wanna ask, will a ko4 turbo kit from a tfsi engine , be a straight fit for a tsi engine(mk3 scirocco)?
Thanks
Providing is the same engine or in the compatibility range. TFSI and TSI share the same engines plus minus some minor differences
@@GetJobDoneofficial if i am to upgrade from a ko4 what supporting mods do i need besides an intercooler, full exhaust sys, dv, induction kit and r8 coilpacks ?
@@michaelbeloso4910 you need a good tune! None of that will be useful without a good tune. Many times a good tune can make or break an engine so keep that in mind!
Porsche macan T model 2022 wearing the same engine with Audi A4 EA 888 gen 3 ? or the new EA 888 4 generation?
CRZA EA113 for the win!
Yes i agree best engine ever
Im confused bro. I have an Audi q5 2014 2.0 tfsi. The engine cover looks like the third one you showed here the gen3, however the code is different than the ones you listed and it doesn’t have the dipstick to check oil.
Hi great videos I work on Volkswagen and Audi as a independent shop and yes the generation one engines do consume a lot of oil but most transverse gen one engines don’t I too like better timing belt engines because there’s a specified time for the replacement and if you replace it on time it’s just fine but with a chain customer think that it’s a lifetime component and then they drive them until the chain jumps then it’s too late and a very expensive bill I really like the timing belt 1.4 L engines they seem to be very quiet and good on fuel this is here in Canada we first got them in the Jetta Hybrid and the Audi A3 e tron plug in hybrid and since 2016 in the base Jetta and now in the MK7 Jetta any Golf since 2018 . We are soon going to get the 1.5 litres engine in the New Taos with the VGT turbo that I’m a little scared of because of the stuck vanes on TDI cars but the gas engines runs a lot hotter and with less carbon it might be better.
How can u tell if it’s a transverse engine ?
EA Sports it's in the 888game
Hi, we had Audi A3 2011 and it has oil consumption ion, so is it a gen 1? Btw the engine blew up because the clogged valves.
I have a 2011 A4 with 211hp which I’ve always known to be a Gen 2 but has the CDNC code.
It's actually gen 1 I've had two vehicles with this engine, one of which I had to swap entirely.
@@GetJobDoneofficial I dno if you're right bud, Gen 1 came without valve lift, VW used these in their early MK6 TSI platform, Audi used them in the 8P A3s too.
They had a non serviceable HPFP, larger crank mains, larger piston rings. Pretty sure they ran a KKK turbo too.
Gen 2 all had valve lift Audi called it (AVS). They designed the engine to have 'less friction' which meant smaller piston rings (that causes the oil scraper/control to carbon up which causes the consumption issue) they had a narrow slotted design, later moving to a longer slotted design with most aftermarket manufacturers moving to the old school helical design. Smaller main bearings. IHI turbo. Later engines had a staggerd link timing chain design to counter the stretch issue (which coupled with the bad tensioner latch design led to the jumping timing issue)
Big changes in the Gen 3 notable ones being integrated exhaust manifold with the later chocolate IHI turbo. The block design changed with narrower cylinder walls, pin bearing balance shafts and I think some run port injection? They also moved away from Bosch ECU to Siemens.
They all ran different injectors starting from HDEV 5.1 injectors to HDEV 5.2. ranging from 150bar to 200bar fuel pressures.
The rocker arms changed through the years too.
My information comes from working on a lot of these through the years, building a couple high hp motors. One being a CDNC from an early 2011 A4.
Good to see someone trying to publicise good info on these engines though, it's a bit of a dark art!
What video is this walk with it one?
Nice education video! What generation is in Q5 2.0 TFSI, hybrid 2012, 211hp? Anybody knows?
Check your code of the engine you can easily research the generation afterwards
The Golf 8 actually has the EA888 Gen 4
How can i tell if i have Gen 1 or 2 they are really similar?
211(208) is always gen 2 or there was versions like that in gen 3?
Asking, because officialy gen 3 started in 2011. But when im looking for the car i see that 225hp earliest versions are from 2013.
Audi Q3 2012 CPSA motor - Which generation?
still can't figure out which generation my CMPB engine code is (2015 A5 2.0)
I own a stage 2 a3 1.8tfsi gen3 ea888. No oil consumption problems yet. It has 85000km
That's the same millage as my gen3, same here, fingers crossed..
@@GetJobDoneofficial I think the engine will be reliable. But my clutch gave up a few days ago 😂 the mq250 transmission in the a3 is weak af
@@michaelzirch9045 Yes, but the good thing they are not too hard to work on. Let us know how job went.
Wait till you hit 140000kms that's when the show begins on most gen 3's
Nice vid. I think you meant it was designed by Volkswagen.
no designed by audi for the vag group
Nope, actually Volkswagen did not contribute to this design at all. EA888 family was designed and developed by AUDI AG, and borrowed by VW since is in a VAG group.
I was just about to buy an Audi A5 2.0t of 2013 (engine CDNC 211cv) but I think it has the ea888 gen 1. Do you think I should avoid it? All this engines have the oil consumption problem?
Unless has already been recalled and fixed I would invest into Gen 2 or 3 as they are manageable through service and maintenance in comparison to hopeless cdnc. That's my opinion as someone who had personally two cdnc vehicles recently.
Generation 0, Motorcode BYT is missing? :)
I have an Audi A3 8p with 1.8 tfsi BZB engine and i have 293000klm!!! Can you tell me more about this engine;;;
i got 2008 A4 b8 engine was gone - so i bought 2011 engine same specs, but question reminds - was that design fixed already?
Do you now what's the code of the engine
Great video. The same story with tsi engines. What a crap. Full rebuild after 100k miles.
It's the same engineering. Do you mean 100k miles?
@@GetJobDoneofficialYes. The same story with DSG. Clutch pack, mechatronics and dual mass flywheel all replaced after 110k miles.
I have gen 1 and Audi fixed my pistons for free. Also did my tensioner since the engine was out. No problems at all since then
🏆
Did you own it since new?
@@vagcentral2252 no. I bought it with 62,000 miles
