Self-diagnosed here. For me the label helped in understanding myself and why I do the things I do or perceive the way I do. It has also helped me in finding ways to cope with things like routine changes or loud noises (like before I would think twice about using noise cancelling headphones, but now I just put them on without thinking about it). It has also helped me identify my shutdowns or meltdowns and how to try and avoid them in the first place, or if I get them, how to safely navigate them! Thanks again for sharing your experience, Ashra!
Great video, as usual 😊 sorry to get distracted with something off topic but i have to know....is that Batman rappelling down the door frame in the background?
I just started watching and already the discussion on mental health struggles is hitting me!! I really appreciate your vulnerability and just know that you’re not alone in feeling this way 💟💟
Love this video and your shorts as a mama of a beautiful girl who we are pursing a diagnosis for. Wondering whether you would have wanted to have been homeschooled? We are considering it to give our daughter a slower pace and time to be herself unmasked.
I was homeschooled most of my life and I recommend it. I didn’t hate public school and I actually wanted to be there once I got 3 years to try it out, but it exacerbated underlying mental health issues as well as autism. Too many noises, too much masking, humiliating public meltdowns… I became dissociated for a very long time. I didn’t feel real and nothing felt real. I became psychotic. My parents took me out of school and then I did cyber school. Now I have a BS in neuroscience with a 3.8 GPA (in college it’s easier to find some spaces to be alone). If you do homeschool, socializing is still important so it’s good to do clubs and or sports.
Hi, your claim at 6:20 regarding who is autistic is inconsistent with the belief that autism is a neurotype as "meeting diagnostic criteria" depends on what society can identify and label as autism.
