I did the same mistake with chikorita by spamming a or something and then went on with it until it became a bayleef then megalanium. I thought it looked cool and it was tanking a lot until the e4. The only other pokemon I bulked up was a Mudkip into a quagsire. Togekiss was severely underleveled. I would save before every league battle and try my hardest but couldn’t beat lance. I went to a party and found out how to reset and did it to get cyndaquill and beat the game after a while. I still miss that save with chikorita
The Switch hardware isn't as bad as the pokemon apologists claim it is. There's tons of different games that run wonderfully on the system. However, the issue here is that TPC is shooting themselves on the foot (obligatory #FuckMasuda) by constantly pushing for yearly releases to then assign their most experienced developers to meaningless side projects like Little Town Hero. According to them is just so they don't "put all their eggs in one basket", as if Pokemon wasn't one of the most successful media franchise in the world already and as if Pokemon fans didn't just buy whatever has the Pokemon name on it.
Weird way to spell out Black and white 2…. But yes gen 5 was peak. Gotta show my love towards the impeccable DPPT HGSS and RSE. All amazing games. All in all, gens 3, 4, and 5 are fooking peak of pokemon❤
Finally someone says what I have been thinking all the time. After the 4th generation, GameFreak has released only a few Pokemons with good design. The last game in the series that I consider successful is the X & Y series. But GameFreak really created perfection with the remake of HG & SS. To personally complete and honor this era, I tried to get a 5-star trainer pass on SS. I managed 4, but failed so many times with the 5th star that I let it go. Note: For the 5th star you have to win 100 duels in a row in the Duel Tower. My record was just under 60.
it was the peak of the hardware to ambition ratio, gamefreak is suited to these kind lower power experiences so went the switch came and they had to push beyond that we lost an important charm that day.
Ah yes I remember my aunt buying me my first Pokémon game. A pirated cartridge of Red Version back in 2000, worked perfectly on a non modded Gameboy Color. Excellent game. I did start Gold, Ruby and Pearl version but I think I'd had enough by then.
When i first played this game ( The original Gold ) Accessing Kanto is a hell of surprise. It might not have such a story, but it feels like a free bonus FULL DLC game. That was the time when there were no spoilers going on around. Just enjoying the feeling of "Wow, there are more than the original 151 pokemon" and bam, you're back in kanto just like that and get to meet all of the 8 leaders again.
I will have to say this is spicy opinion however Gen 5 was the peak of pokemon interms of story development, artistic styling. After playing the old gen 4 games, they seemed just generic pokemon games fun indeed but very template based.
I still have my pokewalker lol. My first gen was gen 3 when i was 7, so i also got to experience gen 1 (fr/lg) but i missed out on gen 2. I was excited for gen 4 because of all the new pokemon, but ngl people complain about BDSP but DPPT weren't very good either. Enter HG/SS, a gen 2 game with all the graphics and pokemon of gen 4. Also somehow the only game to nail the pokemon follow mechanic correctly. It truely is the current peak of pokemon games.
@@marinagaleotti what flaws does HG/SS has then? the whole point of a remake is to make it look better giving a better experience and add more content, all the new content ORAS got was the part 2 with Rayquaza thingy and mega evolutions... despite being a Gen 5 game it feels a lot more empty than HG/SS
@underlinehd16 oras is gen 6 btw Hgss doesnt improve the level curve, the leader teams the wild pokemon levels, the lackluster TR story ecc. ecc. Oras improves a tiny bit the gym leaders, the wild encounters, grinding is removed, and rayquaza becomes more relevant with the delta episode.
@@marinagaleotti ok so literally that everything pokemon was about, ORAS removed... that game is so easy anyone can complete it in a day with no effort... and regardless of delta episode being there or not Rayquaza was always one of the fan favorite, Delta episode literally existed because game freak knew how much the fans liked it
I can't agree. If they had fixed the awful level curve that plagues the game it would be great but as it stands the game essentially just has a painful dead zone right after the 4th gym that lasts basically the rest of the game. The safari zone addition helped somewhat but the devs were too eager to recreate Johto in its original state that they just remade one of the worst gens from a gameplay perspective. Pokemon has a simple level system of 1 to 100 with simple movesets. It does not lend itself to non-linearity, as a result the levels between the mid gyms opposed to Clair and Clair to the elite 4 is annoying compounded with wild encounters being nowhere near enough to alleviate this.
I do really like HGSS but I've always found them to be quite overrated, there are certain issues with HGSS that do hurt them a bit particularly the Exp issue, whereas I'd say BW2 are up near the top of my favourites alongside Legends Arceus and Scarlet and Violet. But again, I do like HGSS, in fact I don't think any of the mainline games are bad, even the weakest ones like X and Y and the original Gen 1 games - the mainline Pokemon games are always fun to play! Great video though and I can definitely understand your perspective!
I think we had the same team, only swapping Ho-oh for Lugia. Needed Meganium to bodyslam the life outta them dragonite. Also didn't know ice was effective against deagon 😅
And goodness, no places other than the Elite Four to grind? It's so bad that I had to trade my team to Platinum to train them in order to send them back prepared for the Elite Four rematch and Red since Platinum has some decent grind methods with the Lucky Egg and certain spots to use the VS Seeker at. Why wasn't the VS Seeker in HGSS? There was no excuse...only the rare phone call from those few nobheads registered in your Pokégear. Can't even rematch them over and over again. When Johto gets re-remakes, I hope they fix at least some of these flaws, especially the grinding. Nobody wants to spend 6 millions years battling level 30s-40s to prepare for Red.
Give these games (and all of Gen. 5) a competent translation/prose that doesn't look like it was spat out by Babelfish and maybe I might look upon them more positively.
Im curious. What is your favorite pokemon game? I love Black and White 2. I noticed that you said that hgss was in your top 3 so im curious what the other two are
@JacobCruise you sir have great opinions! I couldn't agree more with your choices myself! Although I really do suggest that you play through black 2 or white 2 just because of the sheer amount post game and fan service, the games hold. Also, if you have 2 ds's, you can link your copy of either black or white to their respective sequels so characters will mention your old protagonist and unlock some special cutscenes that explain what happened between the 2 year gap. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you enjoyed white you will love white 2.
@@Shyguy2434 i did actually play until gym 8 in white 2 but my save got corrupted on my emulator. I loved that game at that point though. I need to revisit
@JacobCruise I'd love to see a video on it in the future. And if you were to make one, I know for a fact that you'd be talking about the post-game because it's just that grandiose! Whenever you get around to beating the game, please revisit the pokemon World Tournament building. It's my favorite part by a long shot.
no. i believe that the exploration part of pokemon is fine in speed, it once you get into a battle it's WAY too slow. got better in future generations, but in 2D pokemon it felt like all the battle stuff was in slow motion
Personally, i still preferred silver/gold/crystal along with emerald. Visually, it's perfect for a handheld and phone. I cant do the modern 3d graphics.
Ive been playing storm silver the ROM hack and I must say I almost hated this game alot(I feel like I shouldve played the original first but nonetheless im enjoying it now)
I do like this game a lot (especially the following feature), but i think it has some big flaws like the level curve you mentioned (and how there is no place to grind before the elite four at all), as well as the terrible selection of pokemon in johto. I mean its fine for playing it once, but i feel the replay value of HGSS is really bad with how little pokemon that dont suck complete ass you can actually catch (and evolve, since some evolution items are nigh impossible to get as well) in the region. They lock a ton of cool pokemon behind the postgame in Kanto as well for some dumbfounded reason.
LOL FLARE Rollout and milk drink are broken though. Bad take on Kanto. It was a treat that they even put it in there to begin with and you're like WhEre'S mY STorY LiNE? Bro, mind your expectations Why are people like this?
The Japanese version is better for the slots. Even then, Kris and the roulette card flip from Crystal are gone. Any Pokémon remake should have graphics on par with Generation 6, Let's Go, and Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX at best. The changes should only be made to improve the gameplay. Character clothes and hair being redesigned are not really needed.
I need crystal remade on the switch no shiny lock an emerald to an I don't want to play bdsp but if you remake platinum I'll play it even thought am ill wait for sun an moon x an y plus gen 10 hope that the end so you can put all your starters in one box ill wait for the switch 2 then I might buy pokemon home which is stupid would love a living dex I would shiny hunt like crazy
I disagree. And this is coming from someone who loves Johto and their first Pokémon game was Silver back in the day. These games are amazing, make no mistake, but they retain the original games' most notable flaws, coupled with being made on the poorly-optimized Generation 4 engine. Flaws like the bad level curve, lack of Johto representation in Trainer and Gym Leader teams, some Pokémon being postgame-only (though this was sorta fixed with the new Safari Zone, but Slugma can only be obtained via an Egg), Kanto having no story, etc.
Oh, well, look at that: Sneasel is *STILL* postgame-only, despite the others having some pre-Elite Four means if obtaining them. They couldn't even put it in Ice Path like Crystal did...what a joke.
Coming from someone who came from newer games (my first pokemon is sword and shield) I didn’t really like heart gold and soul silver maybe this is just a personal thing since I’m so used to more modern pokemon mechanics however that level curve is absolutely insane and the mid game was so sluggish to start with the level curve it’s self explanatory the trainers aren’t high enough level to give you the exp you need and the wild pokemon aren’t either also there’s another level curve that’s even worse with red and there’s no real good way to get up to that level and sure you can rematch the elite four multiple times however that is just too time consuming for me and the team rocket story was okay? Most pokemon games have mediocre stories but this was just bad my final gripe with the game is how long the hp bar goes down I could literally travel to Malaysia for 2 weeks and come back and then MAYBE it’ll be finished
It’s frustrating because these would have been perfect Pokemon games if they just fixed the level curve and the Pokémon distribution. As they are, they’re kinda unplayable. I don’t think I’ve ever beaten Red in these games. And Lance is another unfair roadblock. Grinding and big brained strats are options but I don’t feel like going through all the trouble.
Not to be rude but Johto is super boring literally any gen after is better than 1&2. The series did Peak with Gen 4 & stayed up till Gen 5. Gen 6 onwards aren’t bad, but the quality of life dropped dramatically. Scarlet/Violet did however bring it back so I’m hopeful gen 10 will be the best gen like plzzzz 😢
I love how Gen 4/5 are considered the best by many I personally like HGSS but it's far from the best imho Johto just has way too many glaring flaws and setbacks for it to be considered a goat
How did you get a Steelix without trading? I’ve not played HGSS but I’ve platinum, and I remembered that you had to trade with a metal coat or something lol
I really do like what this remake and an Pokemon game in general brought to the table. But unfortunately IMO, this game is pretty underwhelming. The level curve, the lack of Johto mons and the rosters in general are really the games biggest flaw and it's an turn off for me. It also has some obnoxious pacing moments. Mostly anything with Team Rocket plot that felt wasted. And because this is an Gen. 4 engine, the battle or the game in general are pretty slow. Not as bad as the Sinnoh games were. But they are pretty close. So yeah. I have fond memories with this game. But as time goes on, it definitely felt dated and it is nowhere near peak for Pokemon. Personally, I think Gen. 5; more so with Black 2 & White 2, are peak Pokemon. Some might disagree. But that's how I feel.
I mean. I just think youre wrong. The games have quite the issues. And people just gloss over them cause of Nostalgia glasses. The best traditional Pokemon games are BW1/2. The quality, polish, uniqueness and fresh take on the traditional formula makes them just the peak. They are well crafted and well rounded games in pretty much every aspect. Games with alot of soul and love unlike anything in the franchise.
@@moonblastx1996 7 is one I see widely disliked online and I agree with it because I hate the two hour long tutorial, the route designs being cruddy and not fleshed out whatsoever despite being based on literal hawaii and tropical climates, and all the cutscenes cutting into the game and taking away from it. Plus the rivlais are kind of meh adn not good unlike Blue, Silver, and N
@@moonblastx1996 The story is decent enough but cutscenes butting into a Pokemon game isnt fun and takes away from the exploration and being able to go wherever youd like which is what makes a truly good, and immersive world. Id like gen 7 if the characters were more interesting, if there werent so many loose plot points or rushed segments of the story, and if the ending was more satisfying. I love good stories, but I love when Pokemon lets me experience these stories in my own way like in the peak of gens 2-6
HGSS are not peak pokemon games in my opinion. They are arguably the worst remakes in the franchise. They didn't fix the level curve, gym leaders still use more Kanto than Johto pokemon, Houndour and others still found in Kanto, exp share being a single item was awful, HMs are a pain especially as they for some reason added Rock Climb which can't be used until we have all sixteen badges, etc.
My biggest gripe with HG/SS is johto. The remakes overall are fun but the reason Johto brings it down is because the region as a whole feels like an empty husk compared to the rest.

Excellent review. I agree with your description about passion within this game - the dev really tried here. Still my #1 childhood favorite. I'm glad you decided to talk about it brother!
Thanks for your time, subbed! 😎🍾🍻🌟
Btw, you should review all retro Pokémon games (assuming if you haven't already). This will grow your channel. Most people already played the games, they'll watch your videos just for nostalgia alone. 🤩
@@Mew_York_Kitty thanks! I’ve done Pokémon Fire red, HeartGold, Emerald, Platinum, Black, and Black 2. Taking a break from Pokemon to review some other games I’ve been wanting to do like Super Mario 64

My Gf was getting into ookemon, through GO. I bought a DS, and SS along with one of the Island ones. She said the graphics where too crappy. Never been more diaappointed.
She should spend more time playing it

My only pain for the game is good ways to grind levels
Replaying it right as we speak!!! And im loving my play through so far!! Deff peak!!
Best game in the series gold and silver. Platinum was good and then after the series didn't deliver anything close.
BW and BW2 are way better than HGSS.
Love the games, my issue is the level curve. Cause how am I meant to be level 40 by the 8th gym when I'm fighting wild Pokémon in their level 20's
Pokemon Heartgold and Soulsilver are still the GOAT 🔥
HGSS is definitely my favorite Pokemon game of all time for sure. Anybody that hasn't played original second gen wouldn't understand.
Underrated channel dude. I love how Sudowoodo became your HM slave lol. I used to do that too bc I like only having rare (at the time) Pokémon.
Thanks 😁
@@JacobCruise Absolutely, hmu sometime if you ever wanna collab. I'm planning on doing more with pokemon myself.
Haven't watched yet but shiny hunting in these games was peak, it felt so much calmer just flipping between the starters
very chill
0:51 oh! I actually did this on the 3ds, there's a cheat that removes the limit of the framerate like an emulator
Great times! I remember being totally shocked about the unlocked region.
it was the peak of the hardware to ambition ratio, gamefreak is suited to these kind lower power experiences so went the switch came and they had to push beyond that we lost an important charm that day.
Ah yes I remember my aunt buying me my first Pokémon game. A pirated cartridge of Red Version back in 2000, worked perfectly on a non modded Gameboy Color. Excellent game. I did start Gold, Ruby and Pearl version but I think I'd had enough by then.
I played Crystal, fire red, sapphire, and now coming back as an adult for heart gold ❤️
When i first played this game ( The original Gold )
Accessing Kanto is a hell of surprise.
As much as I personally hold gen 5 to be the peak of Pokemon, I absolutely respect this point of view. Hgss is absolutely amazing.
Gens 2-6 in general are the best games imho
I will have to say this is spicy opinion however Gen 5 was the peak of pokemon interms of story development, artistic styling. After playing the old gen 4 games, they seemed just generic pokemon games fun indeed but very template based.
yeah i agree tbh
I still have my pokewalker lol.
My first gen was gen 3 when i was 7, so i also got to experience gen 1 (fr/lg) but i missed out on gen 2. I was excited for gen 4 because of all the new pokemon, but ngl people complain about BDSP but DPPT weren't very good either.
Enter HG/SS, a gen 2 game with all the graphics and pokemon of gen 4.
Also somehow the only game to nail the pokemon follow mechanic correctly.
It truely is the current peak of pokemon games.
I wonder how much the pokewalker sells for
No matter what anyone says, those are the best remakes in history
Oras are better remake. They actuqlly fix issues instead of just obscuring the flaws with more content.
@underlinehd16 oras is gen 6 btw
Hgss doesnt improve the level curve, the leader teams the wild pokemon levels, the lackluster TR story ecc. ecc.
Oras improves a tiny bit the gym leaders, the wild encounters, grinding is removed, and rayquaza becomes more relevant with the delta episode.
@underlinehd16 Adding more content doesnt make the flaws disappear. That makes Oras a kinda-objectively better remake
@@marinagaleotti ok so literally that everything pokemon was about, ORAS removed... that game is so easy anyone can complete it in a day with no effort... and regardless of delta episode being there or not Rayquaza was always one of the fan favorite, Delta episode literally existed because game freak knew how much the fans liked it
Still upset I lost my pokewalker a few weeks after getting the game one day while wearing it.
so sad
THIS
You ever think of getting a steam deck? I love mine and I emulate all my favourite Pokémon games there along with Mario
perhapz
5th gen also good, wish gen 5 has first party Pokémon following you behind.
Also didn't know ice was effective against deagon 😅
so real for this
After months of trying, I finally got a shiny starter and can actually start my play through. But now I’m stuck at the odd tree. Trying for a shiny
Bros the shiny god
HG/SS is peak Pokemon.
Great video!
Thanks!
Give these games (and all of Gen. 5) a competent translation/prose that doesn't look like it was spat out by Babelfish and maybe I might look upon them more positively.
Im curious. What is your favorite pokemon game? I love Black and White 2. I noticed that you said that hgss was in your top 3 so im curious what the other two are
I haven’t beat black and white 2 so I can’t rank that. But it’s Fire Red, HeartGold, White. Although those are subject to change. Oras is up there too
@JacobCruise you sir have great opinions!
@@Shyguy2434 i think Chuggaconroy is playing through the game and it feels like he’s been doing the post game alone for months
I only wanted to have the option for Pokémon to follow you, it look stupid for a huge or ,a water for example, to follow you
As a Chikorita fan I can say it's not the best but it's my favorite in gen 2.
3:46 is this a bad thing?...someone made a video about the emulator speed up thing and im guilty for using it during some encounters
no. i believe that the exploration part of pokemon is fine in speed, it once you get into a battle it's WAY too slow. got better in future generations, but in 2D pokemon it felt like all the battle stuff was in slow motion
Should I play soul silver after ?
I’ve only played gens 1-3 and I’m kinda interested in playing gen 4. Should I get diamond/pearl or platinum?
LOL FLARE
Rollout and milk drink are broken though.
SLOTS 🤑
These are the best games ever
Grinding and big brained strats are options but I don’t feel like going through all the trouble.
unplayable? Come on now bruh 😭
@@JacobCruise I’m exaggerating but it’s the only Pokémon game I haven’t finished
@@tk24life Gotcha lol
Not to be rude but Johto is super boring literally any gen after is better than 1&2. The series did Peak with Gen 4 & stayed up till Gen 5. Gen 6 onwards aren’t bad, but the quality of life dropped dramatically. Scarlet/Violet did however bring it back so I’m hopeful gen 10 will be the best gen like plzzzz 😢

The best Pokémon game of all time was my first and it still is barely topped. So every game has been a little disappointing for me.
Id put this near the top still. If you want bad go try gens 7 8 and 9
0:00 Not really peak because pokemon black 2 and white 2 have to be the best gmaes out there...
i need to beat them
Everyone always hyping Blk/wht 2 but forger about the ogs even the pokewalker was a beaut gameplay idea
Buhu someone didn't have the same opinion as you , womp womp.
@@yaasinm He eventually put BW1/BW2 at top of the Pokemon Games. He came around. Unless there is no correlation to ''Peak'' and ''Best'' in this case.

the answer: they are tbh some of the best....... sad that people have trouble admitting gens 7, 8, 9 are bad
@@shewolfcub3 gen 7 is bad?!?! i can understand not being happy with the quality of 8 and 9, but gen 7 is AMAZING
@@shewolfcub3 that's just your opinion, you don't like good stories, you like to mash A and ignore most of what the game has to offer
They didn't fix the level curve, gym leaders still use more Kanto than Johto pokemon, Houndour and others still found in Kanto, exp share being a single item was awful, HMs are a pain especially as they for some reason added Rock Climb which can't be used until we have all sixteen badges, etc.
all good criticism tbh
My biggest gripe with HG/SS is johto. The remakes overall are fun but the reason Johto brings it down is because the region as a whole feels like an empty husk compared to the rest.
Feels like one of the best regions tbh and better than Galar and Paldea and Alola which I despise more than anything
