Awesome skills, graet landing under such conditions! But i don't get the fuss behind this "going viral" and i bet crab angle wasn't even close to what we can see on this video as it was probably shot from large distance with really large zoom, that's where perspective in picture gets squeezed and everything looks way more angled than it really is (a forward shots of display aircraft is similar to this - aircraft looks like it is rocketing to sky, but in reality it is not that dramatic). Maybe people at Etihad who blame pilots for this landing should sit into pit themselves and try fly straight and level first, before criticizing such skills. And saving fuel and saving time, both for company and people aboard.
As you can see in the link below, the person who has made the negative comments about this landing, is a senior Etihad fleet training captain from the same airline as the pilot in question, who undoubtedly will have many thousands of hours flight experience on large commercial passenger jet aircraft, but for some reason, you don't think he should be passing judgement on the pilot and the decision he made not to commence a go-around? As he said, if this landing was attempted during simulator training, the pilot would have been assessed as having failed. You don't seem to have much 'safety sense' my friend? Incidentally, despite the footage being captured by a zoom lens, this does not in any way alter the apparent crab angle that the aircraft touched down on the runway. All a zoom lens will do, is effectively bring the aircraft 'closer' to the viewer, but it in no way changes or distorts the apparent angle of the aircraft in relation to the runway. Bottom line - this pilot was criticized for not initiating a go-around by a senior pilot from his own airline and quite rightly too.
Always try to keep the number of landings you make equal to the number of take offs you've made. Every takeoff is optional. Every landing is mandatory. Flying is only the second greatest thrill known to man. Landing is the greatest! If you push the stick forward, the houses get bigger. If you pull the stick back, they get smaller. That is, unless you keep pulling the stick all the way back, then they get bigger again. Flying isn't dangerous. Crashing is what's dangerous. It's always better to be down here wishing you were up there, than up there wishing you were down here. A 'good' landing is one from which you can walk away. A 'great' landing is one after which they can use the plane again. If all you can see out of the window is ground that's going round and round and all you can hear is commotion coming from the passenger compartment, things are not at all as they should be. In the ongoing battle between objects made of aluminum going hundreds of miles per hour and the ground going zero miles per hour, the ground has yet to lose. Good judgment comes from experience. Unfortunately, the experience usually comes from bad judgment. It's always a good idea to keep the pointy end going forward as much as possible. Remember, gravity is not just a good idea. It's the law. And it's not subject to repeal.
And yet, the captain of this aircraft made a VERY poor decision to land. As you can see (link below), Etihad Airways was not impressed that safety protocols were clearly broken here. Just think a little more about it, If one makes an appropriate descending turn of a circle as they approach close to ground at the exact tangent where the arc is pointing parallel to run way, (without dragging a wing) if your capable of doing this, one should be able to roll out in perfect alignment with the run way, I used to do that fairly closely doing short circuits in a small plane years back, Only a well trained pilot can do this without any problems, That's many moons back,

Great work
no, this was dangerous.
Would the airline had even known of this if the video hadn't surfaced?
Yes, 'every landing is mandatory', but not every landing has to be completed at the planned destination - there is always an alternate with better conditions.

TO CRAB A LANDING AS DONE IS NOT GOOD, FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF TEARING OFF THE LANDING GEAR.

THIS WIND WAS ACTUALLY MILD WITHOUT GUSTS, NO PROBLEM,
BUT IF THE WINDS WERE GUSTING IT WOULD HAVE BEEN THE BEST THING TO LAND SOMEPLACE ELSEWHERE.

@@tdubveedub iT WOULD TAKE VERY LITTLE WING DROP TO STABILIZE THE APPROACH FOR THAT SIZE OF PLANE, A SMALL PLANE WOULD HAVE HAD TO DROP IT'S WING CONSIDERABLE,

Mind you it's been many years since I flown a plane, so maybe your more right then I am.
Just think a little more about it, If one makes an appropriate descending turn of a circle as they approach close to ground at the exact tangent where the arc is pointing parallel to run way, (without dragging a wing) if your capable of doing this, one should be able to roll out in perfect alignment with the run way, I used to do that fairly closely doing short circuits in a small plane years back, Only a well trained pilot can do this without any problems,
