    That, Ladies and Gentlemen is the Legendary Larry Carlton on guitar...beginning was done in one take...very rare for Steely Dan!

    Possibly the best opening chord ever, even competing with the Beatles opening chord to "Hard Day's Night." Great song, and apparently based on an actual event. If my interpretation is correct (and I remember the event, because I am OLD!) the police did in fact take the young man alive. Someone help me, but he was named Dan or Dave Fine? An earlier outbreak of stuff in Portland.

    • @roderickmackay1040
      @roderickmackay1040 3 года назад +4

      Aye. The opening chord is killer, then it gets better.

      Yeah you got it Ken: David Sylvan Fine (also known as William Fewes), the youngest of the Sterling Hall bombers (at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) was captured by the 'agents of the law' (FBI) in San Rafael, California in January of 1976. Despite the title of the song he WAS taken alive, spent three years in prison and eventually became a paralegal in Oregon. He was one of four men that bombed the building on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus because it housed the Army Mathematics Research Center. (Three others were injured.) The 'luckless pedestrian' is the only casualty of the Sterling Hall bombing, researcher Robert Fassnacht.

      @@roderickmackay1040 I agree, With all due respect to others here, Steely Dan could wipe the floor with the Beatles, which is mass market music compared to the the Steely Dan sound experience which is for the thinking person.

    I crossed my old man back in Oregon, don't take me alive.
    I mean, damn!
    The lyrics are really kind of f'd up when you listen to them.
    Cheers!

    I have always been a lover of of lyrics. Deep, serious lyrics that require lots of thought to create. Steely Dan has always had GREAT lyrics. Especially the lyrics in Don't Take Me Alive.

    Since you seem to be focusing on The Royal Scam album, try the title track, The Royal Scam, a bit different than what you’ve heard the past few days or The Caves of Altamira from the same album. From the next and in my opinion their best album, Aja, you’ll want to react to Peg, Josie, Aja and Black Cow. ALL ARE FIRE 🔥

    "..I hear my insides, the mechanized Hum of Another World.." Please notice the unique lyrics also. So nice to see the young generation trying this music we enjoyed in the 70's and 80's.
    Maybe you can also try --"Godzilla"-- by --Blue Oyster Cult-- (they did "Cities on Flame With Rock & Roll" etc) ? You might really enjoy hearing "..people on subway trains scream "My God" as he looks in on them!...Godzilla!".......

    Not just the harmonies, baby. The syncopation of the choruses! The masters of composition, lyric, mood, tension, narrative, and groove. And, more delectably, immune from the criticism of the prols because they've never heard of or cared for them. Consider yourself in a privileged and elite class of listeners. Nothing wrong with that. You earned it.

    First person shooter incident. The first in what has become an all too common occurrence. Becker was a awesome lyricist and evidently historian . Fagan mapped it out with great chords and melody . Steely Dan . They took their name from a novel by William Burroughs called naked lunch . This novel changed the laws about obscenity. Many notable literary people testified in Burroughs defence . What a Steely Dan is used for is explained in the book . It was a product in the blue industry . That's all the clues you get . I read the book when I was young . William Burroughs was a dope addict most of his life . He came from money and hung around with Jack Kerouac Neil Cassidy and Allen Ginsburg. Neil Cassidy was Allen Ginsburg's lover and the protagonist in Jack Kerouac's book on the road again was based on Cassidy . Cassidy's wife believed Cassidy to be a sociopath . Others attributed sainthood to Cassidy . I kinda think he was somewhere in between. I enjoy writing . Wish you the best in your military career.
