This is an epic song: dark, sensous, harmonically complex, and that Purdie shuffle driving it forward while keeping things funky...
    easily one of their best!

This was the height of Steely Dan's perfectionism. Singer Donald Fagen mixed the song 274 times before he was almost satisfied. At this point there was just one bass note he didn't like, so he flew the tapes back to L.A. to fix the note.

I absolutely love watching people with a knowledge of music listening to
STEELY DAN for the first time and being blown away.
This is my favorite song of all time because it was the first song I ever heard that really made me feel something. I was so young. Maybe 6 or 7 when my dad bought and played GAUCHO.
I never really understood what a song could do to me until that moment.
It was the beginning of my love and obsession with Music and Singing. It will always have a special place in my heart.
30+ years later & having listened to it .... wow .... I can't even imagine how many times in all those years!
It's gotta be a few thousand times I'm sure.
    And even after all that
I STILL get chills every single time I hear that Purdie Shuffle & Everytime those background vocals start up at the end.
    You gotta shake it baby.

"Time Out of Mind," from this same album (Gaucho), was a radio hit for awhile in 1980. Up-tempo, and groovy, like lots of Steely Dan songs, but totally unique, and definitely worth a listen!

This is by far one of my favorite SD songs. The electric piano, mix, and notable in the half-time shuffle. I am nearly certain that is Bernard Purdie on drums. A very, very dynamic song. The overall chord progression, the wacky edginess to some of those sections just blows me away. Lots of "adult chords" but in such a gorgeous, artistic way. I can't begin to explain the emotions this song evokes in me for some reason. In any case, a perfect song IMO. Only second to Kid Charlemagne (that Larry C guitar solo!! 🎸)

Such a timeless song and a common story with predictable end. An old guy doing the best he can to keep with a younger girl.
And she’s happy to be showered with the attention and his money.
He wants it to last. She’s knows it’s temporary.
All that wrapped up in the most amazing musical color pallet.
The sardonic lyrics, the smooth sensual horn overlay, quintessential Steely Dan.
Cheers to you m’lady. Thanks for the reaction.

I forget what it was called, but there was a computer that was custom designed and build to handle the precise drumming Donald Fagen wanted on this album. Also, I remember reading somewhere that about 75% of the album had been recorded, when an intern mistakenly erased nearly the entire master tape. The resulting album is what Becker and Fagen were able to salvage and record fresh. There's supposedly lost partial and complete recordings of some of the lost tracks, although at nowhere near finished quality, as they had only been recorded, but not yet produced to final quality.
I am so happy that you have become a Dan Fan!

    • @MichaelTrogdon1990
      @MichaelTrogdon1990 3 года назад +2

The computer was called "Wendel" and it was made by the Dan's recording engineer Roger Nichols. I believe Wendel was only used on "Hey Nineteen" and "Glamour Profession".

Because see here's the deal when you get the wind from the ocean you give positive ions or no I'm sorry negative ions but when you get the wind from the desert you get to positive ions and that makes people irritable plus it also exacerbates the smog makes it worse somehow anyway what a great fucking TuneIn again all right my dear young sister Cherokee on that next drop
