I'm highly disappointed that you recommended Homeaglow. I used your link to sign up for their service. Aside from the experience being absolutely terrible, they automatically signed me up for a 6 month membership that costs ($53/month), which I specifically checked I did not want. I have called them, and cannot get in contact with anyone. When I further investigated, I found out they are running this scam on lots of people and are currently in a lawsuit. Additionally, their reviews are very poor. Would recommend vetting your sponsorships a bit further. I feel distrust in any recommendations you make in the future.

Would not recommend using Homeaglow. The service is a scam. Do your research before you click on the link and get scammed like I did. Dissappointed Sarah is promoting such a terrible company.

Sarah, I am 80 years old and have been canning for many years. This is my suggestion to you. Have an area set aside in the basement(preferably cool and dark) for the majority of your home canned food. In your cupboard next to your kitchen keep your home canned foods that you will be using within a couple of months. Put some kind of coating on your windows but don’t put doors on your cabinets. It is too inconvenient. Once a week or two go down to your basement storage and bring up what you used in your cupboard. This is what I do and I have had absolutely no problem. May God bless you and your family.

Ditto! Or put a roller shade for when the sunshine directly into the room, the light that would come in on the north side of the house would be minimal and not as detrimental

I agree with this. Longer term storage cool and dark and rotating within 2-4 months upstairs. No doors!

      @HappyHooligans 5 месяцев назад +2

This is exactly what I would suggest. We don't have the luxury of a basement so I do have to keep our home canned food in our pantry. If we had a basement, I'd store the majority down there and then bring up what I would use in 2-3 months.

      Yes! Definitely avoid the sun!
I don’t have a basement (my MIL lives in an apartment in our basement). Our home was built by Amish so there are big windows everywhere! We have a pantry off the kitchen with a window in it, facing the east. All open shelves in it. But they built a mudroom that is huge, they used it for canning, I believe bc there is a sink and big counter in the mudroom with cupboards with doors all along one wall, big closet on the other wall for all the coats and shoes, etc. . We store all our canned foods in the cupboards in there and just bring canned foods in from there when needed, only keeping a few canned jars in the pantry (I mostly keep dry goods store bought canned supplies, baking supplies, etc in the pantry, and crocks with potatoes, basket of onions, etc in the pantry.) That way all our home canned goods stay behind closed doors in the dark in the mudroom. We have had a few jars go bad through the years bc a lid came loose, but most have been great; and we rotate them down and to the front each season to keep the oldest being used up first. We grow a huge garden and can several hundred qts of food every year, including meats and soups. I love how the Amish think through their cupboards. The mudroom is all cupboards and the kitchen is mostly drawers, except the big corner cupboard with the lazy Susan on the bottom (we use it for pots and pans and also for cereal) and the corner cupboard above the counter has a lazy Susan all the way up to the ceiling and it hold all our spices and vitamins. They have cupboards for uppers and drawers mostly for lowers. If I ever built a house, I would want it exactly the same: so well done for a working kitchen. 😊

Hey Sarah a food pantry should ideally be built on the north side of the house (sunlight, temperature etc.) and also have a window to allow some natural ventilation. Direct sunlight can affect the length of time you can safely store food, especially canned goods, but there are light filters that can be attached to the glass to filter direct sunlight.

🇦🇺When my 4 kids were small (age 1-7) we spent 2 1/2 months travelling around Australia in a 8 seater van. I took the opportunity to teach my kids sign language. Boy it made a difference to the noise level as we would practice quiet times. It was also helpful in Church as I could sign instructions such as stop talking (when sitting with friends). My kids always knew if I was looking at them, the power of the mum look.

I’d recommend a cool root storage room in your basement of your new house. I like the suggestion to bring up what you need a little at a time - or how about a dumb bell to the basement.
    Thomas Jefferson had one. 🙃
It would be great also if you do any entertaining in the basement.
It would have to be childproof of course.
At least have the space designated for it.
We did that for an elevator in our house we built. We never installed an elevator but the people who moved in planned to do so in the space for an elderly parent.
Put a 220 electric or gas in the basement in the event you have a stove there someday.
I’d also suggest washer and dryer plumbing on each floor.
Even if you don’t install a washer and dryer on both floors until later at least the plumbing is in.

Sarah and solo it was so good to see you two relaxing even with all the errands.🥰 Speaking of your pantry I would not put cabinet doors on the shelves. The two windows Suggest a tint and or plantation shutters, keeping them closed and just adjusting the louvers. Please choose to keep your home canning in your basement in the Northern corner. In this space you could also keep seeds, bulbs, etc during fall and winter. 🤩I know your schedule is super busy but do take the a short trip in your RV ASAP. Do a world of good for your family specially the little ones.😊Thank y'all for your channel. Praying for your family trip to Kenya. ❤

I have pretty severe CPTSD and also struggle with battling severe insomnia. A few years ago I started doing what I call my "wind down routine". I usually start it a few hours before I ideally would like to feel sleepy/being asleep. On a particularly triggering/stressful day I will start it significantly earlier like as early as 6pm. Just one part of my routine is watching youtube videos. I have a number of favorite channels and families that most of the time do not trigger a stress response. You and your family are on my list! Thank you for your contribution to my self care routine! I adore you all and constantly sending love, peace and strength. I have noticed when I stray from my routine like to finish a movie or I am binging a lot of a show it really does impact me.

New layout looks great and the plan to keep the cement flooring plain, but polished, WILL save a lot of money and still be nice. Just put at least half pantry doors on the shelves you'll want to put long term preserved food on. I imagine, with your family size, you'll most likely go through whatever is in the off-kitchen pantry pretty quickly and end up keeping the longer storage food down in the basement. You can also get some security film for your windows to keep the light lower without hindering the view.
I hope you'll look into investing in a freeze dryer with new house and build some space into the pantry for it. It really will make all the difference to you for not only long, but short term food preservation as well, ESPECIALLY given the amount of meat you freeze. You can free up two freezers worth of meat in a month of freeze drying and that's excellent long tern storage right there.

You should discuss the issue with the windows and your canning goods with Jessica from "Three Rivers Homestead". She had her canned goods stored on an open shelf in her kitchen and dining room with windows for years. They only just recently repaired their foundation and basement and moved their canned food into that space. However from what I can tell her food and her growing children seemed to do just fine on the the canned food that was stored on open shelving in a room with windows!!! In fact she still keeps some food in that room to have easy accessibility. I hope this helps you. ❤❤❤

I don't think it affects everyone though because I realize short contents actually makes me feel sick but when I ask persons i lived with if it affect them they were saying no, so i was thinking am the crazy one. Good to know it isn't just me

I have canned all my adult life and my mom and grandmas before me also canned.
If you use your food a year or less, I don’t think you will notice any difference. For any longer term storage you may want to keep them in the basement.
Fruit will change more quickly than meat and vegetable, I think.

I would recommend and make sure you have a lot of outlet in you pantry. Great for chargers and possible other appliances you may use in their. Never enough and builders sometimes don't include.

We have a somewhat finished basement and we have had really good luck with peel and stick carpet tiles. They are fairly cheap and easy to install yourself. Also they are waterproof so if they get wet it’s not an issue-good for basements.

My moms friend has polished concrete floors and I really liked them. No grout lines to worry about cleaning and rugs can be easily switched out instead of carpet. It was pretty too with what color they selected

Have you mentioned how many full bathrooms and bedrooms are going to be in the new house? On She's in Her Apron she had a short-term storage and a long-term storage room separately. I think the foods you canned would be better stored in the basement.

15:02 I sometimes speed up the playback on channels with really long videos, and I found I wasn’t getting the relaxation and calming I normally get from my “friends” on RUclips. I had to go back to regular speed.

I can completely understand the long video theory. I started really watching youtube while i was quarantined during covid. Most of what I watched was your fanily videos and other videos of families. It really relaxed me in a very stressful time. So in my opinion they might be onto something with that theory.

Polished concrete looks awesome when done well. I am so excited to see this build progress Could you put window tint on the pantry windows to reduce the uv rays coming into the pantry. 🌸🐨🌸

I store my home canned goods in my dining room on open shelves and there's a window. I use them all within a year or two but I know that messes with the longevity of the food. However, all mine are good. I just try to avoid spices in the sunlight. I know plenty of people just use blackout curtains, so that's always an option. I'm not an expert, though. I just don't have any other place to store my canned goods. I watch three rivers homestead and figured if she was keeping hers in her kitchen and it's all good, then my dining room, now pantry, is good enough.

I suggest many outlets along your counter in your pantry to keep and use your small appliances- you’ve probably already thought of that but wanted to mention it.

That's good to know. I don't have a good place to store home canned goods in my basement so I store in a dark closet on my main floor. I've been doing it for two years and haven't had a problem.

Store your home canned food in the basement. I would also have them build you a canning kitchen in the basement. It is so nice to have a canning space that you can leave and go make dinner somewhere else!

I would keep a case or so of the things you use regularly and just do a rotation from the long term storage. My room has a window and in spring it’s also my grow room😳. I feel like mine is fine. I do keep blinds on window so when its not doubling as grow room its darker . You work with what you have. 😊

The sun changed the color of home canned food and I have seen people show things stored in dark areas and those not. The change in color means it is loosing the good nutrients that is part of the reason you are canning. You could do closed cabinets under the counters and still have open shelving on the other side. Good luck picking what works best for you in your new house.

I live in the UK and don’t can food but if I were you I would have a pantry in the basement for your home canned goods etc and maybe use the one off the kitchen for less perishable goods ( store bought ). Maybe your freezers could go in the basement pantry too xx
