    We have two elderly people (75) , hubby and I , in our house and I have kept track of every receipt and expenditure for over two years now. We haven't been able to grow a lot though we keep trying. I do spend a lot of time tracking prices and bargains, always searching for specials on food we would eat in any store we might be going by. I can veggies, meat, and as many items of food I can get my hands on at the best prices. Presently we are averaging just over $120 per person per month--and that includes ALL the food, without the meat being separate. I love cooking and spend a lot of time on it, thanking God for everything He provides.

    Our budget has been around 1500 dollars for 9 people. Trying to scale it down more considering we have a full beef in our freezer and do some impulse buying. I've really gotten into clearance shopping and sale shopping at a Kroger store. When things go on sale it can be cheaper than buying bulk at Sam's. I used to buy Rotel, but now I just buy cans of petite diced tomatoes and green chilies separately. It's cheaper, especially when I find cans on sale for 50cents, I stock up!

No teens, no little ones who need snacks, and I follow the rule of "shop the perimeter" of the grocery store. I hit produce, meat, and dairy hard, and minimize accessing the middle aisles. Also, we waste nothing and make a lot from scratch. Love the home made "doritos."

    You can use the lemon rinds as well, after washing the rind well in water zest all of the rinds and you can freeze the zest in freezer bags for use in tea, cookies, cakes and many meals to add a wonderful freshness, then place those rinds in your white vinegar to make it smell like lemon , when cleaning... also the cut side can be used to sanitize cutting boards, counter tops and tables, just let it air dry.... one more good use is using lemon juice and salt on white clothing to ' bleach' them just lay in a sunny spot for tougher stains or really yellowed items... let the juice saturate the clothing, rub salt into it, if laying in the sun let it mostly dry , then flip over and continue, rinse and wash like normal, fresh and clean Brite white...... also lemon juice with vinegar is great to freshen pillows and other fabrics, especially if you can let them air dry out side or in the sun, I do this often even in winter , for our bed pillows, it's so nice to have fresh linens.
    Thank you for sharing ❤❤

    It takes a lot more money to live. Yes you can lower your food budget by not eating out and cooking from scratch .the last time we ate out was in December for our 55 wedding anniversary .$ 65.00 bucks.
    But what about car insurance and house insurance ,property taxes and utilities ?
    Sara is not talking about that.
    When you are on a fixed income where do cut back?
    Our grocery stores are about 5 minutes away .
    Go ones a week . We don’t snack at all. Forget about planning a trip. Hotel have gotten super expensive .
    We used to have winter getaways but since we are both over 75 years travel insurance spiked tremendously .

    We spend 150a week for 2 of us. We buy rolled oats ,white rice in bulk, and store in food grade 5 gallon buckets. Also in that 150 a week we buy household things also in bulk. So one month we may not get as much food as cleaners because I make my own high efficiency washer powder , body pump soap for my dry skin,and some times the dishwasher powder. Those things are a little more costly per week but once I make washer soap I'm good for one year. So it all evens out I also shop our local shetlers discount grocery to save a few bucks.

      We were born and raised in So Cal, then raised our two older children there and our third was 11 when finally moved to Texas. Food is not less expensive here like we were led to believe that “everything” cost less in Texas. But we were able to double our home size, my husband went from spending 1.5 hour/each direction to and from work. He was tearing up when his first commute was 15 min. He spent just over 25 years of our marriage commuting from Corona to Orange County. We’re also a single income family and we also homeschooled all three of our kiddos. Being the CEO of homemaking and primary teacher are no smucky roles. I know we all asmommas are doing the best we can to keep the home fronts thriving. I cannot stand the demeaning description that even women speak of when referring to rearing children and homemaking. I support women no matter what life choices they make in working inside the home or out. Sorry…I guess I got on my soapbox a little. LOL
      But CA is challenging, so kudos on brilliant grocery budgeting.

    Your budget sounds good until you consider that a lot pf the costs are not included. My grocery budget includes ALL of the meats I buy as well as eating out. As interesting as it is to see how much you spend at some places, It would be even more interesting to see what is actually spent on groceries including your bulk meats (whole or half cow costs per year, money spent caring for chickens and cows, ect). It isn't, in my opinion, a real budget unless all food is included in what is spent, including eating out, and a breakdown of how much is non food (household and personal hygiene items, pet/farm animal care and food ect.) vs how much of the spend yearly or monthly is food only.

    • @midlifemama8420
      @midlifemama8420 7 месяцев назад +3

      I can see that. I do a budget, and then a micro budget. So on the macro, yes I try to stick within the budget, the addition of pet bedding and pet food (animals food etc) does add to my budget. And while I like my animals, it’s really hard to say I don’t buy a thing when in actuality I’m paying more for it in their food-read: eggs. Contrasted to that, though, is making my own bread (no bread machine) and I can make that for $2 say, whereas a decent thin slice loaf of Publix bread is $2-$3 a loaf…and excluding effort I’m breaking even except that I know where my food is coming from.
      Every little thing adds up and it’s so much.

    • @stephaniethomasson8812
      @stephaniethomasson8812 7 месяцев назад +7

    For the cilantro if you don't have a dehydrator/freeze dryer you can dry them by hanging them up somewhere. I grow a bunch of herbs in the spring and summer and that is what I do with what I grow. It is a nice, easy, and low cost way to preserve them. Because your not running an appliance to dry them out. It does take a week or so but they taste great. After I know the herbs are dry I usually use my blender and pulse then to put in seasoning jars.
