@@gcn I don't know where Jeremy made this video, but if he is anywhere in western North America, I think the animal was a golden mantled ground squirrel (Callospermophilus laterals). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden-mantled_ground_squirrel
Great video, I was trying to explain a lot of that to my wife as we watched an exciting TDF stage finish. Maybe do another one on team tactics, split between one day races and also stage races.
THANK YOU for answering my question about breakaways. Now I get it. You guys are great! This video and the last one on the TDF made watching it even more fun! Loved the stage today. Good to see that young rider win the stage.
I think some more about tactics, especially surrounding breakaways would round this up nicely. To explain how a breakaway works, who will work and who will sit and why would be important for a noob to understand. Tied into this: Why will one team work on the front of the peloton (whether it is to catch a break or whether it is for other reasons) and why another team may not be interested to waste any cornels. And lastly the differences between teams, with some having contenders for the GC, KOM or point/sprint jersey while others may "only" be after a stage win. Last thing that comes to mind but perhaps most important: the many differences between one day races, especially the spring classics and the grand tours.
Lets be honest we all love cycling videos this is just what I need to get it going the blood I love it. I always watch these before I go out and get my body moving. I love when I always watch one of these, and then put up my heavy playlist I love like Delta Parole and then I just go haaaaard!!!! Tactic hasnt let me down yet.
It's awesome that roadies look after each other. From the trails up in the hills we don't see that, us MTB guys look out for each other in the same way, if stuff goes wrong it might mean a gelling walk back or even life-changing injuries.
The thing I wish someone had explained to me when I was younger is that, for races like the Tour de France, every day is its own little stage, and you can have a new winner every day BUT you can win the *overall* race and never win a stage. Although commonly an overall winner will stamp their authority and claim at least one stage, it's not necessary to do so, and you can still win the whole race. And conversely, the sprinters you see claiming stage glory will finish hours behind the overall winner. It's cumulative time.
You mentioned Domestiques and Breakaways, but I think a discussion of Breakaway Specialists would have been a nice addition. I always loved Jens Voigt for getting into a lot of breakaways.
Really good video. I race a lot at national events(like Oulton Park, Isle Of Man Youth Tour) so this will help for my drafting as I sometimes find it hard to stay on the wheel. Thank You for making this.
I was listening to this audio whilst working on other application. Sorry Jeremy but I started smiling as it suddenly hit me, that I was listening to Kermit the Frog.
That was most useful. However, I am still unclear about the TEAMS: I understand that there are different teams, presumably of a c ertain number of people, but within the team there is a hierarchy? That's where I get lost. I am enjoying watching cycling - erm, to see better weather... (Scotland rains a lot, sunshine is heartening). And yay the chipmunk!
Also useful would've been a section on feeding. People not familiar with the sport sometimes wrestle to understand the intricacies of the feeding rules and etiquette.
The heaviest bike ever at the French Tour was 12 kg lol 😂 and that was 1906. Think about that, only in the early 80’s bikes with that weight reached the masses.
For those watching TIrreno-Adriatico 2020 it's more like Froome was signed up as super domestic for Woods for next season rather than other way around. ;-)
This was very interesting. I appreciated the explanations...would you also consider doing a piece called "Race Talk" where you share the types of conversations that go on duringa race. We get hint in this video..but more would be delightful. Thanks!
I did not know that the riders were avoiding wind gusts by riding so close behind one another, what a domestique is, and what the different shirt colors represented.
very good video, trying to understand the rules after watching anime yowamushi pedal. i still have question does the overall rank apply in the end like sprint winner and mountain winner?
I had to ask your twitter account why some riders were told to lose time. Found out it was so that if they went for a stage win the GC people won't worry about them so let them go.
Great video! How about more videos on the history of different races, famous riders, interesting events that may have happened in previous years. Matt Clip In Stephens used to present some cracking videos.
Great video! I'd love to know more about the timing of races. What it means when such and such is x many minutes ahead, or when the breakaway group is y seconds ahead of the pack. There's a lot of timekeeping and related graphics that are superimposed on the screen when watching coverage of a pro-race. WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN!?!? Also your camera operator goofed the lens-shade, NBD.
Numbers and the colors of the numbers in the Tour de France??? One for the most aggressive rider, leaders in team classification, turning 13 upside down, placement of numbers on the cyclist. How about how timing is done. Thanks for the insight. Ride to the level of your smile. ☀️⛰🚴♂️😃
I’d be interested to know what is meant by general classification rider/team. I know the GC is where the riders are overall but are there certain riders who are designated by their team to finish higher up?
was that someone’s finger blocking the top left of the picture midway through…? lens cap…?! 😅 it’s reassuring that it not only happens to us amateurs. :)
Drop us a like if you spotted Carl the Chipmunk!
I saw it👍🏼😂
Definitely got photo bombed on that. Lol
Squirrel!
@@gregorygoldbarth7464 Jeremy photobombed Carl
🤣🤣🤣
Even the wildlife’s captivated by Jeremy’s enthusiasm! 🐿
He's truly one with nature 😂
Yeah, I guess it is popular with Americans. I rather like the dry British thing.
Hahahah! Love that little guy beboping around his set. It's almost like he knows and wants to be on camera.
???
Sorry, Brother-in-law Nigel. Your position as top presenter assistant has been usurped by Carl the chipmunk.
Lost focus at 00:26.. SQUIRREL!! 👉

It's a munk of the chip. My cat mauls them >:3

No chipmunk could be more energetic and animated than Jumpin’ Jeremy. He really puts the gee in GCN. 👍

Especially the hopeless breakaways. Been confused as to why people stay ahead for just a bit in the beginning, but ends up it's just for airtime.
I have followed pro cycling a few years but not knowing enough. You made it more sense.thank you.

Thanks for this - this is one of the best summaries I've watch, and it explains some of the finer points of racing. Kudos!

I watched 6 adds during this video. Absolutely insane
Thanks for the video! Would love to learn more about how point and timing work at races like the Tour de France.
your american enthusiasm is great for these informative videos. the british sarcasm is best left for challenges and news.

Yes its a simple thing, ut does need to be explained early into watching bike racing
Hard to miss Carl at 0:16!
As ever, brilliant presentation from JP.
Cheers from sunny Covid free (for now) Tasmania!
The most important thing for me as a newbie was, that bike races like the TDF is actually a *team sport*!!
So fun! Even with the Tour and Tirenno Adriatico on right now this video makes me excited for racing!
Helpful for group rides as well.
Good video! I love your little fur covered buddy running around in the background. He did a good job at demonstrating a sprint. Hahahah!
I swear, Jeremy is like every teacher I like the most at school. What a great presenter to have in GCN
Jeremy is a natural in front of the camera. Not as cute as the squirrel though.
Thank you for this. Learning to follow TDF 2023
For some of newer and less experienced riders being behind someone who is "breaking wind" might not seem very pleasant or desirable.
Nice explanation of the nuances involved in bike racing. Good job Jeremy!
You mentioned Domestiques and Breakaways, but I think a discussion of Breakaway Specialists would have been a nice addition. I always loved Jens Voigt for getting into a lot of breakaways.
We could do a whole video on Breakaway Specialists!
Would love to learn more about tactics used by teams!
5:55, is he throwing a whip? What a legend. 😂
Really good video. I race a lot at national events(like Oulton Park, Isle Of Man Youth Tour) so this will help for my drafting as I sometimes find it hard to stay on the wheel. Thank You for making this.
How to lose friends on your group ride in 10 Easy Steps
Awesome show Jeremy 🤙🏼
Thanks for the video, I'm new to the sport so this really helped me understand a lot more.
I have a huge respecteto cyclists, being able to do a 150+ km stages like its nothing is one of the most badass achievements athletes can accomplish.
Thanks for the explanations , love Road Racing
That was an excellent informative video. (Actually, all GCN's videos are superb). Thank you.
I was listening to this audio whilst working on other application. Sorry Jeremy but I started smiling as it suddenly hit me, that I was listening to Kermit the Frog.
best comment EVER
Great show Jeremy. I always like the enthusiastic 101s from you.
I ended it with my gf of 8 years yesterday because she said i go out on my bike too much and i'm not even sorry i love my bike :)
She did not deserve you
Thats just a womens sublte way of saying that she wants to spend more time with you.

That was a brilliant breakdown Jeremy! Really interesting. GCN rocks!!
Is Jeremy a full-time presenter now? Heavy artillery!
Jeremy's been a full time presenter for over a year now!
enjoyed this video 👍 keep up the quality work.
This was great. I am a new fan Thank you !
1:47 Still the best win I've ever seen!
Totally agree. I have watched the highlights of it so many times!
Question: So if you do not make the time cut in a stage... are you out of that stage only or DQ'd from the REST of race and you go home?
Record and fast forward to the sprint segment. Got it 👍
Jeremy is the best!
In the very beginning, there was a squirrel running behind Dude. Wasn’t even drafting at all, though. 🤣😂
Love that you used lots of pro women's cycling footage :)
I think a video about the points system and GC/overall time scoring would be informative too
Thanks Jeremy.
Also useful would've been a section on feeding. People not familiar with the sport sometimes wrestle to understand the intricacies of the feeding rules and etiquette.
Thank you! Good Luck!
How many feet of elevation gain do each grand tour average? Where does 2020's climbing stats rate in that list? What tour holds the record?
Jeremy is a Disney Queen! Attracting wildlife.
0:25 squirrel is ready for racing
Cool video, it helps a lot! I'd love to see a video in which you apply all these perspectives to an analysis of a stage :)
Which I knew all that stuff when I started. Thanks
I really like this host. Hes been a nice addition.
This is a real step up
Please do a video on how to train a chipmunk to enter and leave a scene with perfect timing.
Somebody get that man a GCN mug STAT!
No wonder that when I ride with a group I feel no fatigue but when I go solo I would get tired

Well explained 👍🏼
Didn't the Tour let everyone after the cut off start the next day, as they would have (from memory) up to half the riders?
Lol at 0:15 there is a chipmunk and he gets to watch the GCN front row.
I did not know that the riders were avoiding wind gusts by riding so close behind one another, what a domestique is, and what the different shirt colors represented.

Absolute legend 👍
Alvin seems to be extremely interested in how to understand a bike race. He might even write a song.
squirrel at the back took my focus.
Can we use tubeless tires in competition
Great video!
what are the types of events in cycle race?
One of the guys in the national championship jersey looked familiar. Can't quite place where I know him from though.
I had to ask your twitter account why some riders were told to lose time. Found out it was so that if they went for a stage win the GC people won't worry about them so let them go.

Gotta love Carl the Chipmunk 🐿
I need spandex, a sock, a helmet, and one 'em skinny wheeled bicycles now. Don't ask what the sock is for.

Drafting : YES, being behind a rider when they are "Breaking Wind" NO lol
here after watching yowamushi pedal, im currently now saving money to buy a good road bike haha.
Why is their many saying squirrel its chipmunk 😂😂😂😂
was that someone’s finger blocking the top left of the picture midway through…? lens cap…?! 😅 it’s reassuring that it not only happens to us amateurs. :)
just give me a dose of J. Pow one or twice a week and im all good
Thanks for the video. Best regards to the squirrel 🤣
If Jeremy had have been my teacher at school I would have got less detentions 😂
This guy is super positive
Does anyone else think that Jeremy sounds kinda like Kermit the frog in this video?
Good information!
Nice video
