Abandoned City You Can Buy Into. A Forest Full of History and Relics. Destination Adventure

- Hyder Alaska, is one of those towns that I always think is going to blow up into a travel mecca, but seems to just stay under the radar. There is a handful of part time locals, and a smaller handful of full time locals, but the rest of the city basically sits abandoned. Like so many of these small north coast towns, Hyder came to life with the discovery of gold, and in a few short years was a bustling little city. As the years went by, the population of Hyder dropped and climbed, nearly as frequently as the tides of the Pacific beside her, and I fear that she is on her final decline now.
The residents that remain today are passionate and proud, and they are working hard to maintain what is left, and I do believe there is potential for this little town yet. Never the less, life here does not come without a fair bit of struggle. Hyder is only accessible by ship, float plane, or vehicle through British Columbia, and funny enough, being the southern most town in Alaska, it only covers a nine mile section of land. Cell phone reception is provided by Telus, a Canadian company. Power comes from Stewart, BC. There are no grocery stores, only a gift shop and a bar.
The forest is full of relics and history, the ground is still quite rich with gold, but with the challenges and isolation, Hyder stays pretty dormant. If you do get a chance to visit Hyder, make sure to stop at the Glacier Inn and get Hyderized.

It's not about you (It kinda is), but we really like you. Lots of people doing the travel blog thing, but suck at being likable. You ARE the channel, and we're all here for it.
I sure do appreciate that, thank you. 😊
Well said👍
I Agree! He IS the Man!!!!
100% correct. IWatch 50% because of the content 50% because of the creator
@@Destination_Adventure Good ol' BC boy comes shinin' thru Brother 😉👍💯
Yup, adventuring with Destination Adventures is
the adult equivalent of Saturday morning cartoons.
I lived in Stewart when I was 10 years old, my stepfather worked in the mine. I remember we went to Hyder for New Years and our can got stuck on the way and someone picked us up in a truck, and my Sfather left the pinto on the side of the road. The party at the bar was all families, and pretty drunk parents..lol. We were all stuck at the bar for the night. One guy had a heart attacked and died that night, and they propped him up in the phone booth (i think it was a coffin??). And everyone had a shot of hyderize to honour the man… then they wrapped him up and put him on the back porch…
When we got out late in the afternoon the next day, we found our car destroyed, a huge bolder had came off the cliff above and lander right on the pinto! That spring, when the airport opened, my mom booked flight out for her and us kids, and told my stepdad, “you can stay or pack up the house and meet us back in Campbell River, but the kids and I are leaving!” I have always wanted to go back.. I remember snow being higher than the telephone poles? Just found some pictures the other day…
This is a wild story.
Thanks for the share. Love stories like this!
what a party..
I've been to Hyder. It was the first time I had ever stepped into a bar. Might have been that bar?
I was 7. It was 1977, and I guess the rules were pretty lax back then lol
First thing I do on a Saturday morning is Watch Destination Adventure thank you Dustin
Me too!
*Dustination Adventure 😸
The best
100% me to. Coffee in the pot and Destination on. Lets Go!
What happened to no trespassing Lol shhhhhh we wont tell anyone but be careful
Nothing better than Dustination Adventure on a saturday morning before work.. Thanks Dustin and Emi
Good one! Dustination! Very clever.
@@garthquapp6370 If you watched the whole video, you see that "Dustination" is mentioned, and the reasoning behind why he didn't call it that.
A great adventure. I am 68 and no money to travel with, so I really enjoy traveling with you. You make great videos with good content. Keep up the good work.
Now that I'm retired, I believe I could go there and never come back.
I've lived in Alaska for the last 52 years, it takes a really special type of person and mindset to live in Alaska. The weather, lack of daylight during the winter season are the things that exclude most. I'd never live in this area because you can only access it by air or by coming through Canada which is expensive because of duty fees and limits and a pain in the ass.
@RussellBond-zh9qw yeah. You're right. It does take a tough person to live in Alaska. The lack of daylight might bother me, but I've been through tough conditions and would like to see it. The other thing is that I've lived in Nebraska all my life and, at my age, don't really have that much desire to pick up and leave. Too many connections here. But I sure would like to see Alaska.
Yup, you might not survive the first winter
Sounds like a plan.
@@peteverhelst2088 but would be an absolutely gorgeous place and view to enjoy until the end!!
@20:03 - "Pretty basic adventure strategy today: Phase 1: find a road. Phase 2: see where it goes." ... true adventure spirit! 🤩💚🧡💙
Happy weekend everyone 😊👍
“But Uncle D! Everything has already been found…” 😉
I do miss that intro!
I miss that too!
The Shasta pop can brought back memories. We used to drink their pop back in the early sixties in the Lower Mainland.
Hasta, Hasta to be Shasta was the jingle on the TV.
Thanks for the interesting tour of Hyder.
Probably just missed you! We left Stewart this morning to head home to Kamloops. Eating fudge from Caroline as I watch this episode!! We chatted with her for a bit while our kids stood there patiently. Then she gave my kids a couple souvenirs for being good kids. She felt it was important to reward good behaviour and wanted them to know that it wasn’t unnoticed. It was a great gesture
If you want to talk about old pieces of equipment you should have stopped in for a chat with my Dad. He is 83 born and raised in Stewart and worked his whole career as a mechanic and equipment operated in the area. He probably can tell you about most of the old trucks you found.
Always a great morning watching Destination Adventure! Re: the border cut/slash - it’s maintained by the international boundary commission, a joint Canada-US venture, and they maintain the slash and boundary monuments along the entire border. They use machines when they can, but otherwise, it’s by hand.
It's a lot more fun being where you've been when you're showing a new friend!
You are awesome. Thank you. Have a great weekend.
Thanks for your videos Dustin, I spent a few years there as a child as my father worked for the Granduc Mining Company and unfortunately died on one of the Salmon glacier there while working there. As a kid it was a great place to grow up for some formative years.
Caroline is an absolutely brilliant human being. I learned about her from this channel and I met her once. Super talented person and thankful to have her as my friend.
Totally said "thanks for tuning into another episode of Dustination Adventure" at the end, dont act like you didnt! lol!
Welcome Emi! I have to say you are an amazing young woman, out on boats, hiking through forests, just love it. So thank you and welcome here, glad to know you.
Dustin, thank you again for your films, we enjoy them immensely. We believe you show us what Canada looked like many, many years ago. Take care and stay away from stinging plants!
Used to be legendary fish and chips , and burgers , served out of an old bus in Hyder only a few years back. The Bear viewing walk is impressive and a 'must do' during the salmon runs.
Got to check out a neat little town in Alaska this morning as I sipped coffee at my desk in West Virginia. Thanks again good sir
Those mountains, what a backdrop for all your great exploration 😍 And thanks for helping Caroline like you did, proud of you for that.😊
Thank you. ☺️
I live near Ketchikan and it is wonderful to see you bring some light to this area.. thanks
I love that town. Got my broken tooth replaced there once. lol
One of my favorite drives and places to visit Stewart and Hyder. Thanks for bringing back the memories ✌️
It’s amazing that no matter where you look there are traces of humans. Junk left all over. Great explore! 😊😊😊
Dustin I swear I love Saturday mornings more now then when I was a kid. Scooby doo has nothing on Destination Adventure 🤣 Thanks for making Saturdays great again 🤘
Got Hyderized back in 1996 and planning a trip back this fall if all goes well. Thanks for the great video.
The national average price per liter in 1979 was 23.6 cents nationally, Canada switched from imperial gallons to litres in 1979. So a lot of those buildings were older than 1979. We've been officially Destinationized!
So proud of Emi. I was not brave enough to get "Hyderized" last summer
Saturday morning adventures with Dustin and Emi❤
What a treasure trove of stuff ! What gets me is those big equipment rigs why nobody sold them off but dumped them 🤔 Looks like that would of been a really cool town back in the day ! As far of why so many places like this are being abandoned is due to economics and this generations need to be landlocked in a suburban setting with conveniences 🏪
Its awesomeness the world has someone like you who appreciates places like this to bring us history 101 while having fun 😁! Thanks again for another adventure Dustin Aloha 🌲 🐻
Always look forward to Coffee with Dustin Saturday mornings! Thanks very cool video!!
It's sad to see Hyder slowly decaying. My first trip there was years ago, and at that time there were still quite a few little shops open. There was a couple of local horses who wandered the town and would come up to you or your vehicle looking for a treat. We had one of them stick it's head right inside the truck window! The scenery is worth the trip over though!
It boggles my mind how so many trucks, cars and equipment are left to erode. Makes me wonder why it couldn't have been sold off when not needed, had to be expensive at one time. Maybe just wasn't feasable. Having said that, what a great video, I really enjoyed that. Would love to see some more videos where you go into towns like this as I enjoy these types as much as the ones in the wilderness you do so well. Thank you again for a great video.
Imagine how expensive it was to get them up there when they were able to generate an income. Now the cost is much higher and they’re second grade rust buckets.
Thank you for another excellent episode. I was in Hyder in 2007 and it looks like there is a tad more happening there now than back then. One thing I recall vividly is a house where an elderly lady (very disabled) was selling photographs of the area that she had taken herself when she was younger and fitter. She said that she had moved to Hyder from San Francisco. I guess that she has passed now, but I'd love to hear from anyone who knows anything about her story?
@@TheWatcher111 Thank you. I bought a few of her photos and still have them somewhere. I was on my way up the Cassiar and onwards to the Dempster, but I wish I had stayed to chat with her for longer.
Growing up in Kitimat, not far from Hyder - is comical to think back on - but as kids in elementary and high school, nearly every young guy claimed to have been Hyderized lol.....which I have my doubts on today! As an adult I have fomally been Hyderized!
it,s always sad to see towns being running down as always good work dustin 👍👍
Being a dual citizen, towns like this are really appealing to me. I checked the Hyder market on Zillow - 2 listings and none of them are commercial at the moment (didn't even see the general store).
Love it ! You can absolutely make a video worth watching . Great video Dustin.
Another amazing adventure! As many others have commented this is my Saturday morning ritual, I could spend a month there exploring. Thanks for sharing 👍
What a neat adventure of Hyder. All the old vehicles and equipment hidden in the bushes. I bet there is a lot of great stories of the history of the area. What a different border crossing . 😊
That was interesting! Thanks for taking us along! 🥰
Agreed. Been to hyder and Stewart has really changed. 40 years ago.
Hoping my dollar bill from my visit in ‘84 is still on the ceiling😂 Still have an unopened bottle of it in the cupboard too.
Dukes of Hyder!? Lol.
Awesome to see you exploring this town! It was great!
I guess that orange van/truck at 5:22 is trying to be the General Lee from Dukes of Hazzard.
Went back to show my son and his friend...they loved it too!
Got Hyderized last fall by the owner. Hell of an experience going there and drove up to the salmon glacier and hiked above the view point a ways. Truly stunning views.
The pace of today's film just suited my mood so well. Thanks Dustin beautifully shot as always x.
Love the Adventures , keep em coming and thanks again . Safe Travels .
*Rituals & Traditions are what connect us to the past and lead us into the future. Thankyou Dustin and Emi. 👊😎👍
That was a very pleasant place to stop by. Too quiet for me. Beautiful for sure.
Happy trails to you and Emi!😊.Love
this adventure!
Thank you. I have been there 2 times. Love the drive from Anchorage to Seattle.
Great vid bud. Keep em coming!
Thanks for another adventure.
I have been to Stewart and Hyder several times and been Hyderized twice. You have caught the flavourful of the area perfectly. well done Dustin.
Mother nature seems to work fast trying to reclaim our human footprint up in the pacific northwest, but thank you for searching out what she is trying to hide. I get why you like seeing all that old iron, now knowing you once were an operator. Seeing Hyder today sure gets you thinking about what it must have been like back in the day trying to carve out a living in a remote area, and how ruggedly beautiful that area is. Thanks Dustin for bringing us along with you once again on another adventure! see you on the next one!
This episode is doing what I love! Exploring old buildings, townsites, and areas around.
As always, another great video. Thank you for the adventure ❣️
I’d be shittin bricks biking around those back roads with all those massive bears around lol.
My wife and spend a great deal of our recreational time up there, northern BC, Yukon, Northwest Territories. With out trying to be too manly or be "that" guy the bears up there are not the bears of say Yellowstone. Not habituated to campers so they run, given half a chance. I'm more wary of moose up there than bears.
Love your channel brother!!!
What a great video
Dude! How could you miss Hyder's most famous attraction? You gotta see the smoldering town dump on fire to see the scavenging black bears. It's worth a drive through. My theory on all of the busses is that Hyder was the final stop on a lot of hippy bus living tours from the 60's and 70's. On our road trip from California, my friend and I stopped at every bead shop we saw and bought a few random beads. After the trip, I made two necklaces as mementos. Caroline, I believe, sold me a sweet red stone skull that became the centerpiece of mine, set off by some red dyed pigs teeth from Brazil that were hanging on the rear view mirror of my friends VW Rabbit. And lastly... When we were there, our neighbors at the campsite were a group of dudes from Montana or somewhere thereabouts, who had bought a minibus from a college sports team and made a group roadtrip for the salmon run. They had been there for two weeks and no salmon came to join them. They had to head home without a single fish. At least they tried and had an adventure anyways. Keep on truckin' on!
@@TheWatcher111 You crusher of dreams with your facts. My fantasy is much more fun.
Always enjoy your content Dustin!
I found this town fascinating! Thank you for sharing!
So sad that these beautiful places are deserted. I would live there in a heartbeat.
Amazing as always to follow your adventures.
as always another great show. Love that you show us all there is to see including the old machinery!
Princess cruises was my first cruise.... great memories, so much talent aboard there!! So much fun!!🎉👍😁
Dude, I have to said. I follow you from the time you have 6 packs.......now with 1 proud 1 pack and with a great life. Nice girl, channel growthing, and more important SEE YOU HAPPY. Made many people including me, SOOOOOOOO happy. Congratulations.
Another great video😊
Cheers 🥃🥃 to you & Emi. You got it done!
That was a cool tour back in time , I liked it , it was well covered! Neat place really !
as always great stuff thanks, safe travels
Always love your videos. It’s such a beautiful area, i would love to come see this place for myself. Thank you Dustin ❤❤❤
The last store you showed was built by my uncle for my grandmother. It was "mom's this and that shop". It was then bought and turned into the general store. It is a beautiful building. It makes me sad to see it in that state. But I'm not the person with money to be able to buy at the moment. Hope it finds a new caring person. I grew up in this town and love it immensely. Thank you for the video.
I love how nature just takes over. Fantastic video!
Absolutely love to watch your videos. Always informative, interesting and respectful. You’re a fabulous person!
love these explore vids thanks bro...
Great informative docu on Hyder, so well done, thanks Dustin, have fun and I will be watching :)
This was awesome!
LOVE these adventures. I always feel like "I'm there" with you. thanks again!
Thanks for the amazingly beautiful video coverage. It’s so clear and well done that I am actually travelling with you.
Great video as always
Cool Story. Nicely done, and thank you for showing that off.
Hey dustin! Really enjoyed this video keep it up, and The merch u have are really cool. Cheers🎉
Still the best show on utube ! Thanks man for the quality tour !
🍻
Love these local exploration eps!... BTW... I do believe the super rad mini van truck was sporting the 'General Lee' 01on the door. gotta' appreciate that
I absolutely love this episode it was great thank you so much
Really cool seeing this. I was hyderized back in 1977.
Very cool 👍👍
Thanks Dustin, what an amazing place to see. The views of the mountains are incredible. IF you get up to Watson lake, there is a WW2 Bomber that ditched but was pulled out to the south side I believe opposite the airport.
Hello, amazing what you see on the adventures.
That was great!
Interesting place ,thanks for sharing,Emi is amazing and now she is hyderized :-)...thanks for sharing and stay safe 🙂
Another good one
Destination Adventure I'm still waiting for someone to open a brewery in Prince Rupert and make Dustination Porters!
Pretty cool how you explore and show things different from other channels. More of the non touristy places. Love that. Rock on
Great job! Your videos help bring out the better side of people and nature in this world. Have a great summer.
I found this little place very interesting. Thanks. :)
We had a maintainer like that on the farm originally the municipality owned it but after its end of life my dad a councillor ended up with it. It was originally designed to be pulled by horses. We pulled it with the tractor and once big enough I rode the maintainer maually raising and lowering the blade to grade the driveway spread gravel or in the field fill in washouts.
