An amazing group!!! The first Canadian rock band to top U.S. charts. From 1969-1974, their hits included: "American Woman", "No Time", "Share The Land", "Hand-Me-Down World", "Undun", "Laughing", "These Eyes", "Albert Flasher", "Star Baby" and "Clap For The Wolfman" (A tribute to DJ Wolfman Jack). UNDUN is a song that warns of the devastation of drugs. And the just as the reality of Undun echoes in your thoughts, you couldn't help but enjoy "Clap For The Wolfman" -- fun lyrics, fun beat, great topic!!! ""Hand-Me-Down World" was real! Enjoy each one and the whole catalog! Keep the "Share The Land" in your heart!

The story behind the name I heard on one of those history of music shows on the radio in the 00s.
Evidently during a lunch hour concert at the height off Beatlemania to promote the band the radio station (CKY58 I want to say) did not name the actual band but just announced them as the guess who? Obviously hoping to convince people that it might be the fab four.
Now I have no idea if it was true, but a great story either way.

In the spring & summer of 1983 I was stationed at Ft. Gordon, Ga. I had finished basic training at Ft. Jackson, SC and was at Ft. Gordon for AIT, mine being Radio Teletype Operator. Across the way from my barracks just a not too distant walk away was a place called Barton Field, which was basically just a big open field that I believe was used at one time as a parade field for the different units stationed there. I walked out of my barracks and heard music coming from over at the field, so I started walking that direction. I got to the field and saw a big stage set-up and walked up as close to the stage as I could get. It was then the opening keyboard part to this song started, and It hit me I was looking at Burton Cummins, Randy Bachman and the boys from The Guess Who. They had reformed after a number of years apart and were playing a free show for the troops. Not sure how I wasn't aware the show was gonna happen to this day, but I got to see an hour plus of one of rock's legendary bands, and they were f-cking awesome!!

This was Burton Cummings singing this one and they had many big hits in the late 60's and early 70's ("No Time", "She's Come Undun", "Share the Land", etc.). After they broke up, Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman went to join up and form "Bachman Turner Overdrive" ("Taking Care of Business", etc). This was a phenomenal early rock band and they've got a great catalog - well worth exploring and reacting to. Burton Cummings also did some excellent solo work ("Stand Tall" for instance) and that's worth checking out as well!

I have never seen this performance before. Burton seems to be holding back and very restrained here, but wow, so smooth, seemingly never flipping to head voice or falsetto. One of the truly iconic voices in pop history. Instantly recognizable.

Yes, The Guess Who performed American Woman. The song is not about hating on women from America, however.😂 The band is Canadian, and the song is about their disenchantment with America's involvement in the Vietnsm war, as well as societal problems such as inner-city poverty. The "American woman" being referred to is the Statue of Liberty.

@@karlweir3198 I love Canada too karlweir but I'm an American cousin so to speak. I've driven around Lake Ontario entering from Jackman I believe. It was before the need for passport. My favorite spot so far is Niagra Falls on your side. Eight hours from my old home. Been there a dozen times in my life and love the Gardens along the gorge far more than the casinos. I think they blemished the area. Maybe they should have put them in Buffalo. Anything would help that mess. My America was cleaner then and people loved the country. Enough about that, I don't want to pop a vein in my head!
Yes, I loved the Guess Who & really loved The Who. They both made some fine music. The Canadian's also built the Ram Military Tank I believe to US Specs. It was a fine tier two machine, and it was quick. Black Pegasus does great reviews for the most part and is insightful. Later....

Saw Burt Cummings in St. Louis in 1974 in a small venue. He was dressed all in white and had his white piano. My sister and I were in the 5th row. He sang all of his great songs. One of the best concerts I've seen. In the years before that, he played and was friends with Randy Bachman of Bachman Turner Overdrive. They were and are friends and co-wrote a lot of hits together. "She's Come Undone" and "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" amazing ones, also, and would love your reaction, BP. 🕊💕♥

Amazing band from Winnipeg, Manitoba! These guys were groundbreaking! If you want to see them live, original members, look at the "Running Across Canada Tour". Seriously! You will see them in their later years and still sound like they are playing in the 70's! No doubt, they should have been in the Hall of Fame decades ago!!

When the band's producer/manages sent the albums to radio stations hoping to get air play, they decided to package the albums in plain brown covers with the name "The Guess Who" written on the cover. The DJ's thought maybe it was a new release from "The Who" and played the single "These eyes." It became an instant hit with requests for the song coming in over and over. One of the most genius marketing ideas ever.

I still have this on vinyl!! LoveThe Guess Who. American Woman,Undun, and No Sugar Tonight were practically anthems and still bring that late 60's/early 70's vibe alive. Burton Cummings is remarkably talented and was already grabbing attention in Canada in his late teens, where he still lives in the same hometown where he grew up.

Glad you reacted to this great Canadian Band. Their singer was Burton Cummings and when the group broke up, he went solo and Randy Bachman (lead guitar) formed Bachman Turner Overdrive. Burton had some really good solo records, probably released here in Canada primarily. Check out Rhapsody by Burton Cummings. And.....yes they originated "American Woman". Burton did a lot of writing for the Guess Who.

The Guess Who is one of my favorite bands of all time, & will never understand why they are not in the Rock Hall of Fame, although, if I had to venture a guess, I would say, it's because they are Canadian......Canadians so rarely get recognized, case in point, the amazing ballad singer Celine Dion, not on the list of top 200 female singers of all time, and she should be very close to the top of that list!
