    • Marc Cohn - Walking in...
    Lyrics:
Put on my blue suede shoes
    And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
    W.C. Handy
Won't you look down over me
    Yeah I've got a first-class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be
    Then I'm walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
    Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel?
    Saw the ghost of Elvis
    On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
    They just
    Hovered around his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing
    Waiting for The King
    Down in the Jungle Room
When I was walking in Memphis
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
    Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel
They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
    And Reverend Green
Would be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But boy you've got a prayer in Memphis
    Now Muriel plays piano
    Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would
    Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
    She said
"Tell me are you a Christian child?"
    And I said
    "Ma'am I am tonight"
    Walking in Memphis
    (Walking in Memphis)
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
    Walking in Memphis
    (Walking in Memphis)
But do I really feel the way I feel
    Walking in Memphis
    (Walking in Memphis)
I was walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
    Walking in Memphis
    (Walking in Memphis)
But do I really feel the way I feel
Put on my blue suede shoes
    And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring
    Rain

When Marc talks about Muriel plays piano every Friday at the Hollywood he is talking about the Hollywood Cafe in Robinsonville Mississippi. I have been there 4 times and it is great. A little tiny cafe on the Blues Trail. Pictures of Mark and Muriel in the place. Great fried pickles and catfish. Does not get any better than that. Brilliant song and brilliant record! Saw him here in Petaluma CA at a small club. Kicked ass and took names! Take the time and get to Memphis and then head south along the blues trail you will not regret it!

Absolutely love this song. There were a few times I visited Memphis just as this song came out and was shooting up the charts. It really puts you right on Beale St. and B.B. King's place. Sun Records had not just Elvis, but also Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis (the Killer), and several other legendary true Rock & Roll stars when they were first starting out. Marc Cohn is definitely underrated which is a real shame. Now I have to try and find my cassette of this album. BTW: If you do go, don't worry too much about going to Grace Land. It's become more of a tourist trap than anything.

I'm from Memphis, left when I married in 1984. Memphis in May BBQ. Memphis is known for its BBQ. I grew up in Graceland subdivision, about a mile from Elvis's Graceland house, in the 70s. It was a different time.
I took a couple of riverboat rides. If you want to hear the blues music, go to Beale Street. There is also Mud Island.
I remember driving into Mississippi with my momma. We went to an elderly lady's farm house. We bought fresh eggs from her, she grew peanuts, and had a quilting loom that hung from the ceiling where she made quilts, standing up. I remember to this day, living the old country life.

This makes me cry, every time - and I'm a Buddhist! Marc Cohn's (surprisingly difficult to play - for me) arpeggiated bluesy piano is just sublime, his voice hits me hard, the lyrics and wonderful and the whole composition is a masterpiece. Every so often you come across a rock classic which transcends time and this is one of my favourites. Cher's cover is fabulous too. There was a mashup somebody did between the two versions (frequency shifting Cher's voice down I think) which is jaw dropping - I just wish the two of them had sung this as a duet.

As an Elvis fan I've been to Memphis 3 times so far and I had this song going through my head while I was walking on Beale Street 😊 You should also listen to Cher's version of this as it's great as well and she actually dresses like Elvis in the video.
Sun Studios (aka The Memphis Recording Studios) is where Elvis started out. It's where he recorded his first record and a few other hits after that as well. By-the-way, the Jungle Room isn't in the basement of Graceland; it's on the ground floor and Elvis actually recorded a whole album in there in the 70s.

Used to love to go to Memphis back in the day. My late wife and I renewed out wedding vows there along with 2500 other couples at a event back in the early 90's. We were just there for a weekend getaway and stumbled on this wedding event. I rarely remembered this but now that my wife is gone, I remember that weekend fondly. Crime wasn't quite so bad then as it is there now. It's a shame because Beale street used to be a blast! Downtown is probably still OK but I wouldn't drift out more that a block or two unless you live there and know the danger areas to avoid.
