"Muriel plays piano" Muriel was a real older lady he met while he was on this trip to Memphis that inspired the song. He was in the bar watching her play, like really insanely talented, but no one else was really paying attention to her. So he went over to talk to to her, she played for her church and did the bar gig on the side. She appreciated him coming over so much she asked him to sing with her. I love that story.
Beale Street is a famous street right "in the thick of things" in Memphis. So I think he's implying that he was right "in the heart" of Memphis, and being there made him feel like he was walking on air.

This is a tribute to Elvis!! I worked at Elvis Presley's Memphis in 2003 and people came from all over the world just to see Graceland and be in places that Elvis was in all over Memphis! These fans were genuinely interested in every thing that Elvis was around!! Too bad the corporate people didn't see that!! They only saw $$ signs!!

Also in 2005 Marc was shot in the head during an attempted carjacking while on tour with Suzanne Vega in Denver Colorado. He survived and was released from the hospital after 8 hrs of observation.
