It is a testament to talent on how these guys transitioned from the "classic" ZZ sound of the 60's/70's and adapted to the 80's. And those ladies from the 80s... WOOFTAH!!! I miss the 80s! LOL

From actual research instead of childhood rumors.
"The band ZZ Top's name came from an idea by guitarist and lead singer Billy Gibbons. Gibbons noticed that many performers' names used initials while living in a small apartment with concert posters. He was particularly inspired by blues legends B.B. King and Z.Z. Hill, and considered combining their initials into "ZZ King". However, he thought that was too similar to the original name, and eventually came up with "ZZ Top" as a way to signify "reaching the pinnacle" of their journey. "

Besides Legs there was three other mammoth hits off here: Gimme All Your Lovin, Rough Boy and the ultra huge Sharp Dressed Man.

This is how a ragged trio of Texans conquered MTV during the synth pop period; great music and great videos. Unlike a lot of hard-core ZZ top fans, I love their 80's stuff. You still have to listen to La Grange, Jesus Just Left Chicago, or Blue Jean Blues to hear their true genius. Gotsta get paid is also as cool as it gets. They teamed up with Rick Rubin and did a song based on the 90's rap song "25 lighters". I don't know the song because the only rap I really do is rap/jazz fusion; Digable Planets, or Us3.

Zz Top formed in 1969 in Texas as a blues/ rock band.
Cpl fun facts: Jimi Hendrix was a big fan of Bill Gibbons' guitar playing and that is something.
Everyone told them if they wanna make it in the music industry they have to go to New York. To which they said " no, we are staying right here in Houston".
They became really popular in the 80s with the introduction of the Car, storytelling videos and the Album ELIMINATOR.
To hear their more blues and raw stuff, check out " Tush" as many mentioned, and " Jesus just left Chicago".
Love, love your reactions. And mostly your commentary instead of just watching.

Something you would probably like - ZZ Top covering a rap artist! They shared studio space with the rapper Z-Ro here in Houston, liked his "25 Lighters", and did it up as a ZZ song in "I Gotsta Get Paid". Awesome song, with a slammin video.

ZZ Top is just one of those bands that just keep making hit after hit through out all the years. Also, fun fact Jimmi Hendrick rated guitarist Billy Gibbons as one of the greatest guitarist of all time.

RIP Dusty Hill, ZZ Top's bass player for 50 years, and RIP Kimberly Herrin, the actress and Playboy Playmate in the red top, who just recently died of cancer. She had roles in movies such as Romancing The Stone and Ghostbusters. The other two women are French model Danièle Arnaud and "Real Housewives" Jeana Keough, former Playmate and formerly married to Oakland A's pitcher Matt Keough. The "make-over girl" is Wendy Frazier.
ZZ Top was heavily influenced by Mississippi delta blues from the 1930s and 40s, but played in a boogie-rock style. They had their first major success in the 1970s, but their success began to fade with the rise of Disco in the late 70s, but their Eliminator album - using then-new tech of drum machines and synths, and largely written by guitarist Billy Gibbons in the studio along with the engineer - was a breakthrough, and their innovative early MTV videos were massive hits and caused a decade of resurgence for the band, with their albums Eliminator, Afterburner, and Recycler all being top 5 albums in the 1980s.
You really should check out some of their pre-video-era hits. Songs like their signature song "La Grange" (written about the famous "Chicken Ranch" brothel in La Grange, Texas, which also inspired the Broadway musical and subsequent movie "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas'), "Tush", and the funk/blues 1-2 punch of "Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago" (these two songs are always played together). Other favorites are "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" and their cover of "Dust My Broom", both from the universally great Deguello album.
If you like blues-rock, often with some added funk, you'll never go wrong with ZZ Top.

    Yo, BP!
Always great content! On that note, I grew up in the 80s & 90s circa '78. As you grew up a hip-hop head,. I grew up listening to just about everything rock/metal since the 1950s on up. Most of your reactions are childhood memories of mine when the songs came out if not then shortly after. Seeing people of different ethnicities, social & economical circles vibing over the same music I grew up with kicks A$$! Rock/Metal in all it's forms belongs to all peoples!
    God Bless & Much Success!

I’m 70 in a couple of days. When I was 17 in 1971 I bought my first car and drove into town like a king. As I crested the hill into my UK working class northern town. Z Z Top Boogie came on the analogue radio. I’d never heard them before… it was about 1971… My mind was suitably blown.

ZZ has always been in my top 3 favorite groups. I've seen lots of their concerts with the first one being in the mid 70s. Their music never gets old. There isn't one single song they've ever done that I don't like. That's saying alot! Thanks for you reaction!

ZZ Top was on the bill for a free military concert at Camp Pendleton. My platoon got tasked with setting up the stage, sound, lights, etc. for the promoter. We all got crew passes, and were able to hang out wherever we wanted before, and during the concert. I gave one to my wife, who loves ZZ Top. She got her own personal concert! She was chilling in front of the stage when they came out to do their sound checks, but hey ran through heir whole set. Later, she ran into Billy in the green room area, and got his autograph and a bunch of pictures with him. It was her first concert, and will probably be her best.

ZZ Top was the longest-running rock band with only its original members. Small wonder! You should check out the video documentary "That Little Ol' Rock Band From Texas" to get a good look at where they came from and how they got to the top. They played that "shuffle" sound for all it was worth: hard, fast, and lots of fun.

I first saw these guys live at the old Surfers Paradise raceway, the opening bands were two big Australian groups, Rose Tattoo and the Angels. The whole concert was amazing, but after the Angels finished, these three guys with their fuzzy guitars got up and just blew everyone else away. The sound they made was incredible. The stage backdrop was the dashboard of the car as a spaceship, there was a giant gold Tutankhamen mask with a white cloth mountain which disappeared up Tut's nose. But the sound... the sound was just amazing.
RIP Dusty, live on Billy and Frank.
