The AI in this game is overall really good and the few flaws are all quite situational. The developers deserve some respect for that.

You forgot the most important one: Chrom's cheese. The CPU cannot recognize how dangerous Chrom's up special is, so you can spam up B at a ledge and the CPU will eventually get caught in it, get spiked at any percent and die. You can trivialize a lot of Legend-class spirit battles this way to the point where you need no spirits yourself. Certain similar up specials, like one of Mii Brawler's, also work for this, but Chrom's is the best one.

CPU’s prioritise items when they really shouldn’t (pick Snake or Banjo and leave bait grenades, the CPU will always try to pick them up),
CPU ice climbers have almost no idea how to recover and will often SD,
Pokémon Trainer will just randomly switch Pokémon,
Isabelle uses her fishing rod when she shouldn’t,
Dr Mario is often aggressive off stage to the point where he can’t recover but Little Mac knows not to go off stage,
CPUs WILL air dodge the first time you approach them in juggle situations,
Duck Hunt will often use their up special in neutral,
jigglypuff and Kirby will often use all of their jumps to get to the top centre of a level before falling back down,
jigglypuff will also use down special when she shouldn’t,
Joker will use his up special in neutral while he has arsene,
Wolf will also use his up special in neutral but never angles it horizontally,
whenever Luigi gets a grab at low damage he never really does anything with it,
Inkling WILL use roller if they think their opponent is at a kill % and will often charge their follow up smash attack for too long,
CPUs always drop their shield and get hit by Mii Swordfighter’s Tornado neutral special, Palutena will often spam neutral and forward specials where she shouldn’t,
CPUs don’t ever adjust to Villager’s forward smash while recovering...
There’s probably a few more, but I think it’s clear that the CPUs have weird inconsistencies which is strange when you think about how well an amiibo can perform before they get changes that are strictly unfair

    What I found.
-If you hold shine at top platform in 3 platform stages (mainly yoshis story) mega man almost infinitely damages himself with Uair.
Cpus will often resort to options that don't make sense like smash attack on full shield/ counter.
-Other characters like Cloud will jump and throw their projectiles like pacman and occasionally Samus.
-The parry mechanic is seemingly automatic in cpus, and so they end up parrying the first hut of a multi-hit move, and being hit by the rest.
-Some cpu spam moves in bizarre ways. Like Marth charging shield breaker from a mile away, or Mario Dair right after being punished for using Dair.
-They rarely go off stage and usually resort to projectiles.
-They go for untrue combos really often (Kirby using down B to up smash)

to most players the pathfinding aspect of a game is something that might go unnoticed - but I'm also an AI developer in a platform fighter and I cannot even fathom how many hours went into carefully fine-tuning that singular aspect of an AI. Normally the algorithm is simple - just use A* or something, but in a platformer you also have gravity to worry about *and* the character-specific jump heights and recovery options and so much more. Seeing that little mac maneuver around palutena's temple like that _even among the moving platforms_ really sells me on the idea that smash ultimate's AI system is something special, and I hope they continue to improve it even further in the next game whenever that may come!

I noticed that the Lucas CPU loves to spam up smash at really weird times which makes it super easy to punish him for that. He and the Ness CPU also love to use PK Thunder into themselves to kill with which makes playing any character with a counter against them quite easy.

They probably had to be specifically programmed to navigate these stages because of how big they are and because of some things older smash ai did they probably auto generate things like recovery points sections of the stage so they know what direction to throw and such

The cpus take a long time to roll out of snake down throw which means you can dthrow to fsmash computers at certain percents and they will do nothing

  • @darklightning2730

At high percents, there are some moments where the computer players recover, but always end up going in the wrong direction, no matter how good the recovery is.

Another one to add is that the Pit CPU likes to use its up-B directly upwards immediately after parrying, which of course does absolutely nothing beneficial

Most cpu don't understand how the blast zone works or how special things like limit, shulks specials or anything like that works so thus they do very stupid mistakes that good have been avoided had they been programmed with the knowledge to understand such things.
But nope they are just like letting your young brother or sister play while you make them your punching bag.
