  • In 2021 Tokyo will host the Olympic games for the second time in its history, but it actually won the right to host the Olympic games three times before, so what is the story behind the decision to return the 1940 Tokyo Olympic games?

    Did you know that Japan also gave back the 1940 winter Olympics in Sapporo and World Expo 1940? Japan did go ahead with the 2,600th year anniversary of the accession of the first Emperor.

    2018 France won World Cup
    2019 Australian forest fires

    Fantastic video and a fascinating story. Incidentally, Berlin also handed back the right to hold the Olympics, when it declined the 1916 Games

      Thank you very much Sir. I didn't know that Berlin also game the right back also. I'm guessing it was due to the start of WWI. Thanks for sharing .

    Oh boy, I did not know this. But happy Helsinki (Finland) eventually got to hold the Olympics after all. I doubt Finland will have a similar chance anytime soon.. Also, great videos, hope you can keep them coming!

      Thank you Johnson. Yes Helsinki went on to host the Olympics in 1952 after the dust had all settled in WWII. London did host an Olympics in 1948.

    It sounds like the 2020 Olympics will be added to your list of Tokyo Olympics That Never Happened...

      Really, I thought they were pushing forward with the Games. Vaccinations are event starting to be rolled out. It would be a huge financial loss if it doesn't go ahead.

      @@JapaneseHistory they are pushing ahead with it. It's just that they either host it this year or cancel it altogether since they won't postpone it again since it will cost more money

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      Right now they are going ahead with the Olympics. But as time goes on the Japanese public are becoming tired of it.
      I think it will happen, the country's vaccination program is moving faster now and all athletes will be vaccinated.
      Even if there are no crowds there is still billions of dollars in TV rights to recoup some of the money spent hosting the games.

    I cracked up at "Do you think Japan made the right decisions?"

    • @JapaneseHistory
      @JapaneseHistory  3 года назад

      LOL, I guess it was a no brainer, but in the end the Japanese had no choice. Keeping the war machine with China was costing big bucks, throw a Summer and Winter Olympics plus a World Expo and they were stretched for resources.

      @@JapaneseHistory I mean throwing the games in a fascist state that carries out genocides all over Asia would be wrong as hell. Berlin was bad enough, but this would've been even worse. The IOC should've revoked it by themselves, but they never cared about those things unfortunately.

    • @JapaneseHistory

      Yes mojabaka. Times were certainly different back then. Thankfully times and attitudes have changed for some.

    I think the United States returned the right to host the 1976 Winter Olympics after Colorado voters blocked state funds to pay for Olympic venues in Denver. The United States then hosted the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York in 1980. Fun fact on those games: the Olympic Village that hosted athletes from the Soviet Union were converted into a medium security prison.

      Wow I didn't know that Tom S. I'd imagine it must of been a tough sleep for the Soviets. 👍

      YDS it certainly did. Interesting fack, the Japanese had also handed back the Sapporo winter Olympics and World Expo 1940 too.
      If it all went ahead it would have been one big year of events.
