This is happening on schedule driven by the politicians starting about a dozen years ago. EVs could replace small cars to bring fleet MPG up. When the gov allowed the carmakers to do it with EVs (or EV credits from TESLA) the death of small inexpensive gas cars was as lawmakers intended.

That opening headline clearly says the Rio sedan is being canceled. Does this mean the Rio hatchback will continue on sale in the US market? (despite Americans' morbid fear of hatchbacks) Minus the Rio, for less than $20,000 I'd go for the base trim Versa, with the 5-speed manual transmission. Great fun to drive, and has the #1 anti-theft device fitted as standard.
1:17 Not to mention the cheapest new cars are often sparse/underpowered/small enough to be outdone by lightly used cars for the same price. The warranty isn't apparently as valuable in people's minds, and I guess folks don't really want as bare bones of an experience as they seem to vocalize. And size is the biggest value indicator for Americans.
2024 chevy trax starts around $20k USD, so some automakers do see the opening, in terms of cheapest new car, there's no competition, its always the corolla, spend that extra grand, highest hp, highest reliability by a mile, also you're looking at the corolla hybrids wrong, its not just about making up gas money from the extra 4 grand, it also retains much higher resale value when it comes to selling, so if the person can afford it, they should go for it, hybrids, PHEV, EV are the way to go, and if china attacks taiwan, fuel prices will double again.
I wonder is Kia looking at bringing over the Stonic crossover with the Smartstream G1.6 engine to the US market. Or more likely, replaced by the K3, which is now available in Mexico.
Kia already has 3 Subcompact crossovers in the US they won’t add another. The K3 is meant to replace the Forte and will be Kia’s only sedan in the US after next summer after they stop production of the K5 and stinger.
The issue is Rio feels exceptionally cheap and has major engine issues. Good luck getting any warranty work done on Kia through the dealers. But yeah it's sad to see these cars go.
9:45 The 98 Sentra with manual I bought a few months ago with around 155-156k miles on it cost $2500...ide rather pay that than $6300 for that Scion with an automatic for that much, as sadly they never gave that model the manual in the USA.
People that can only qualify for Rio money want a $50k SUV. So they end up at a “buy here pay here” car lot. Ten years later they wonder why they haven’t accumulated wealth.
Actual MPG numbers for each model listed below. The Toyota Corolla is way over priced and to even get heated seats you have to spend a much higher amount on upper trim. 2023 Nissan Versa CVT 32 City 40 Highway 35 Combined and the 5 Speed Manual is way worse at 27 City 35 Highway 30 Combined 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage CVT 36 City 43 Highway 39 Combined 2023 Kia Rio IVT 32 City 41 Highway 36 Combined 2023 Hyundai Elantra Base IVT 33 City 42 Highway 37 Combined Hyundai Venue 29 City 33 Highway 31 Combined The Mitsubishi Mirage is the most fuel efficient non hybrid vehicle in the USA and does it based on a small engine and low horsepower and keeps it basic and simple no high tech engine, no hybrid, nope just an old school design. To some thats a negative to others a positive its all in personal preference. Its a car that easy to work on and is very reliable with a lot of features for the price. I love my top trim 2021 Mirage SE and it has all I want like push button start, remote start, heated seats, big back up camera, sharp plaid seats, led head lights, led tail lights, led fog lights, apple car play, power windows, locks, mirrors, steering wheel audio controls, bluetooth, cruise control and so much more. Even the base trim ES now for 2024 comes with a ton of features. Some people want a new car that is cheap and has tons of features and saves gas and this is it. Is it the most refined or quiet, no. But is it reliable, yes! I will say the MPG number on the Hyundai Elantra are very impressive. Not sure what its real world ratings are or if it beats them like Mirage does. Car and Driver stated the Elantra Hybrid way underperformed its MPG ratings so hopefully the gas only powered Elantra does better because I think its a sharp vehcile inside out and has a nice 10 year warranty. Also the 2023 Nissan Versa is an amazing deal especially the top trim Nissan Versa SR it comes fully loaded and has so much and is a sharp car with extremely high online reviews from critics. You can get a fully loaded top trim Versa SR for around $21,000.00 to $22,000.00 range depending on color option cost and accessories you pick. You cant go wrong. Each car on this list will appeal to someone and none are bad its just each person has their own wants and needs and each car will fit that for someone.
Well, fantastic vehicle, I guess we'll import cheap Chinese vehicles looking forward, increasing our reliance on imports even further, deprecating our domestic auto industry further. It is more than possible, with good management, good design, good manufacturing, good supply management to make a low cost vehicle profitably. Domestic industry chooses not to, hence consumers are shoehorned into unaffordable vehicles and become 'poorer' esp. when EVs are part of the equation. Great content, thank you!
Eventually the Chinese cars will hit and the prices will drop. Also, onece the battery problems for electric cars are ironed out then they will be far cheaper (and safer)

They really need to make cheap cars that are better built, larger, safer, and not so ugly. So many of the cheap cars we had are very dangerous and had deisgns that would never have mass market appeal. People looking for a new car have the money to spend on something better. I still can't get over Ford not selling focus in North America.....Focus is such a great hatchback
No question we need affordable cars. But the loss of Kia, Hyundai and Mitsubishi is more like a public service. Lives will be saved!
You know I'd be going Corolla Hybrid mate ;)
I like the Rio.. 😢 Well, If Kia decides to bring a small crossover/suv replacement it might be the Stonic.
or Sonet because Stonic is too old
I have a 2021 Rio. It’s a perfect compact car. Perfect.
@@DeadAir21 So the K3 will use the _Nu_ G4NH engine rated at 149 bhp?
The issue is Rio feels exceptionally cheap and has major engine issues. Good luck getting any warranty work done on Kia through the dealers. But yeah it's sad to see these cars go.
If you're talking the Rio with the finicky _Gamma_ GDI engine, understandable.
Where is the engine issues
I went online and google it
And no problems engine wise
2023 Nissan Versa CVT
32 City 40 Highway 35 Combined and the 5 Speed Manual is way worse at
27 City 35 Highway 30 Combined
2023 Mitsubishi Mirage CVT
36 City 43 Highway 39 Combined
2023 Kia Rio IVT
32 City 41 Highway 36 Combined
2023 Hyundai Elantra Base IVT
33 City 42 Highway 37 Combined
Hyundai Venue
29 City 33 Highway 31 Combined
The Mitsubishi Mirage is the most fuel efficient non hybrid vehicle in the USA and does it based on a small engine and low horsepower and keeps it basic and simple no high tech engine, no hybrid, nope just an old school design.
MIRAGE.
RIO.
VERSA.
YARIS.
ACCENT.
FIT.
SPARK.
........................R.I.P.
If it had an image of reliability, economical, handling, not slow, affordable overall, I would get one. 😅
Where's the Kia Forte?
Excellent
Unfortunately, you missed the best cheap car. That is the 2024 Chevy Trax. Conventional auto trans 1.2 l turbo.
What a shame. But hopefully with the death of the Rio and Stinger, Kia can divert more attention and resources to the Forte and K5.
Or bring over the K3 to the USA market, since it will be assembled in Mexico.
@@Sacto1654Kia will probably move forward with only the K3 and K5 for their ICE sedans. I'd love for them to do a K5 GT with AWD to put that power down. I think they will now with the Stinger gone.
I have a2016 for what it is has good pick up and ride is not bad
all about greed, no care for the poor who can't affords expensive vehicles.
That versa or corolla
I would much rather ride my skateboard down the interstate and get pulled over by the police (true story) than pay dealers markups. can not fathom all my peers leaving beyond their means; one missed payment away from their lives falling apart. the american dream is like the queen; dead.
honda fit
WTF what do i do? I cant afford to own these new cars?! Why is a VW 50-60k?!!!!
Welp guess I'll keep being grateful for an eBike and not needing to pay more than $1/day for public transport 😏
They really need to make cheap cars that are better built, larger, safer, and not so ugly. So many of the cheap cars we had are very dangerous and had deisgns that would never have mass market appeal. People looking for a new car have the money to spend on something better. People on a budget are in a mindset where a new car is completely off the table. Plus insurance on small cars are not cheap either.
WTF isxwrong with these companies
That was a piece of junk. People want bigger vehicles.
just say you can't afford them
The Versa or Sentra
nissan versa remains
Kirk, Others may lament but I see OPPORTUNITY. It is time for Toyota to bring back their Yaris and show the others how a small, affordable and RELIABLE car is built!!!!!!!🤩🤩🤩🤩
Toyota like all the other greedy carmakers, only cares about profits. Toyota would much rather make a 60-100k SUV/truck than a cheap small car because the big expensive car has much fatter profit margins
KIA Forte LXS
Teenager cars are dead. sad.
The car companies are going over to electric cars. The best marked for small cars is Europe.
And, Europe are selling 20% electric cars.
VW Norway are selling it's last fossile car this year!
So, small cars will go back to the US, but as electric.
Just wait to see what's happening when Tesla model 2 is on the marked....
Just another way to screw the working man in America. Around the world, small cars are the standard.
yep exactly!
I was planning to buy this car, but am concerned about having problems getting parts in the future.
