Kirk, The more minivans the better! Japan is full of practical vehicles, they have minivans and station wagons in abundance.🤩🤩
My family owned a Previa when I was a kid, so that brings back memories. It lasted forever, had almost 500K miles on it!
I bought a used 91' All Trac with 280,000 miles on it, and it was the best van I have ever owned. It' cost me 200 dollars, and lasted another 100k before it started to give me issues. Just an incredible van. The way it drove was sublime. There is nothing like a mid engine Toyota van. TRUST ME.
Owned my 1993 Previa for 16 years, still miss it😔
I remember when US dealers at this time in early 90s said these vans’s had powertrains/transmissions built to last 300k miles or more. And they were right as they were little tanks despite the RWD. And you could buy right off the lot. And reasonably priced. How things have changed.
@grcigar9911 the Previa started at just under $19k which is about $38k today. That's right where the Sienna starts at🙃
No way , I won’t believe it until I see it, but if it does I’m buying it for sure, like you said bring it Toyota
The one thing that would beat this as a sure-fire purchase for me would be a Camry wagon 🤤.
If it does happen, it's gonna be just for JDM. There's no way Sienna is going away and Toyota offers 2 minivans in US.
@@letsgo4834station wagons are not neede.d
@@letsgo4834Wagons won’t sell well in the US
@@letsgo4834 It already exists here... It's called the Crown Signia.
We need freaking Alphard here in US
I NEEEEEEEEEEEED IT
That would be the current Lexus LM for the EU.
We need the Lexus LM minivan here in America. It probably would cost more than $60,000 to start but it probably would have the 2.4 liter turbo four(275hp) which would make it more fuel efficient than the Lexus TX(which would have the same engine).
@@johnnymason2460it’ll be in the $100k mark. It’s supposed to replace the LS. But in all honesty, as much as I love Lexus, there’s almost no reason why one should pay for an LM if the Alphard is in the same market. It’s essentially the same car with almost the same luxury, except for the 4-seater.
Yeah it wouldn't make sense for them to design a whole new minivan when they already have one that would sell like hotcakes over here. What is Toyota US smoking anyway? Why do they design inferior minivans specifically for our market?
EREV Previa. Sounds awesome
Why not give the option? Previa & Sienna side by side? Still love my Sienna, they clearly can’t make enough of them already.
Beautiful design they need to bring it to the production
Actually, Toyota already markets E-REV or range extender like Nissan e-Power in Japan. It’s in Toyota Raize / Daihatsu Rocky. Powered by motor only, and generator is a 3-cyl 1.2L NA. It’s branded as e-SMART Hybrid and the system was invented by Daihatsu.
Remember the Toyota minivan made in the 80s where the engine was mounted under the driver seat? I knew someone that had one and that van would never die!
That is the Previa.
i still have my 94 awd previa!! 355k miles.....so stoked for this! as long as the engine is just as bulletproof as the 90s previa ones
This is quite interesting but if we're being honest they just need to stop fxkng limiting supply. The sienna is being marked up like crazy because there just isn't enough of them. The previia is basically the same size as I just didn't see them bringing both to the us market. But if you guys reading this want to hear about something cool Google the Toyota sienta (which is different from the sienna) it's a smaller 7 seater minivan which I was heavily looking into. They have it in hybrid too. That thing to me is more interesting and I wish they'd bring that here. It has the Prius powertrain.
In Canada, the import classic car back-dating is 15 years. So, that puts me in a pretty sweet spot for the 2010 models.
I’ve been eyeing the Sienta, Porte, and Honda Freed.
Ideally, I’d go for my favourite, the 4-door Honda Odyssey, but I really don’t need anything that big.
Damn. It’s bloody cool though.
@@FasterThanSoup you know what your talking about. Such cool stuff we don't get in North America man.
It's really a shame we don't get the Sienta here, it's so versatile and affordable! They are everywhere in Hong Kong, and I sat in one a few times in a showroom when I was on vacation there, very spacious and comfy! Too bad the newest generation doesn't look as good as the previous gen though...
wow. Nostalgia for me! I owned a burgundy 1999 like the thumbnail when my kids were still young. It was extremely functional and stylish and even fairly nimble due to front mid engine and rear drive. In snow you had to be careful around turns but fun too.
I think they could base it from the new Innova Zenix from SEA which is based on the TNGA C platform shared with the corolla. They could position it under the sienna
Still driving my 2000 Sienna. People want to buy it but many memories i love it.
One of my aunts had a Previa back in the 1990s when they were new. I remember how spacious and weird it was from a design point of view. I also remember it being underpowered since it was the non-supercharged version. The engine vibration transmitted through the floor was unbelievable. 🤣 From what I understand in other countries the 2TZ-FE is so bulletproof it outlasts the van it powered and was put into boats....which is hilarious 😂
The EREV makes a lot of sense because of the high thermal efficiency of running a ICE at the optimum RPM.
Plus it eliminates the transmission. So MPG should get better and the cost of the battery can be offset by eliminating the transmission. Charging at home for a daily commute is possible. Win, win, win.
Much like the Chevy Volt, which unfortunately, GM killed off.
Previa better bring back the 2nd row removability that we lost with this gen Sienna
Really? You can’t remove the middle row in the 4th generation Sienna?
@ Not in this gen Sienna.
Can’t believe it! 2026 Toyota Estima/Previa is definitely BACK❤❤❤❤❤❤IM EXCITED
Kirk, I will admit that VW looks good but I only get a buzz from genuine Toyota vans. 🐝🐝
It's called Tarago here in Australia, but we also have plenty of JDM Estima imports too. Very popular people movers.
This new one doesn't really promise reliability and longevity due to the tiny engine, but it's still a Toyota so who knows.
I owned 4 Previa’s in the past and bought my first one new in 1993. The best car and great looking car ever build. If there will be a new one build, I’m 100% going to buy that Toyota Previa. Greetings from the Netherlands
Yes!!! One of my favorite cars, ever. I say car because it really is more like a bloated family sedan. One of my friends actually crashed--TWICE--in his dad's Previa, and he came out okay both times. Safe little van. Doesn't look it, but it is.
I was a first- and second-generation user.
I used to read this magazine while standing in a convenience store.
What about the Toyota Space Van, that was their first van here in the states.
We had a Previa in Kenya in the '00s, at the time it was called an Estima. That thing was really great for our family with 8 kids (we had extended family kind of adopted). It was the best addition and it had so many memories.
a plug in hybrid makes so much sense in a minivan since it has the space for it. I just think about how much EV range the R4P gets with an 18kwh battery and now more than double it.
I was always a big fan of Previa, superscharged, mid engine and very stylish.
Owned a 94 LE All-Trac. Was the longest owned and most miles I ever put on a vehicle. We had even sold it to a family member who put another 100,000 miles on it. We drove it for 200,000 miles. It had a couple of regular issues. A/C system, and rear wheel bearings. Of course still own Toyotas.
I worked at a Toyota Dealer years ago and we sold a Previa to a very large man. The seat belt did not fit around him. He was insulted that he needed to buy a belt extention that was available through the Parts Dept.
I also ❤ the idea of a locomotive plug in hybrid "e-rev" is what you called it type of car. Getting 500+ miles of range with a minivan is almost just as thrilling as rallying a gr corolla! Cruising moab in an fj cruiser
I experienced driving a Previa back in the day. There's a reason why the Previa died and the Sienna succeeded. The Dodge Caravan template of the minivan had logical advantages in the US environment over the mid engined HiAce-Delica van format. The Caravan format drives more like a car, FWD with a smoother V6 right in the front. More interior space. A mid engined van layout is due to a platform inherited from cab forward pickups which is common in Japan and Asia. Mid engined flat four isnt the best position for maintenance. It uses a different engine from other vehicles. The heat and the vibration can come through the floor, requiring more insulation and weight to counter. Why not bring the Alphard to the US instead?
Oh, I loved my Previa. Miss it. It was reliable, super interesting to look at, compact. I'm not sure why they keep making the "mini" everything bigger and bigger. The U.S. needs a small truck and a small van that is smaller than the current small trucks and vans, at a relatively low price.
My family bought a 1992 Previa in 1994 and I bought it and exclusively used it from like 1998 to 2009, ~222K miles...turned it in for cash for clunkers because I didn't need all of the cargo/passenger space and needed better mpg. Great vehicle, incredible visibility with its curved front windshield and raised seat.
Nissan needs to bring back the Quest and introduce the Engrand to the States
My dad owns a 2009 3rd gen Previa with 2.4 liter inline 4, making about 170hp, the 2nd and 3rd generation Previa is A LOT different than 1st gen. The 2nd and 3rd gen is a lot narrower than 1 st gen which is more like a Sienna, much wider and softer with bigger engine(although there was also 3.5 V6 option for 3rd gen). Also the 3rd gen is by far the best handling Toyota I ever driven, even better than the TNGA platform nowadays.
BTW the 1st gen has a variant called Estima V ( 0:36), it's a JDM version with narrow body. That make sense why the production line change into two different car after this gen.
We had a blue Previa, it was actually a nice van was a Toyota brass hat car from San Ramon parts distributor center…., however the engine crash test were not good at the time, I learned how to drive with that thing!
Love to see this Previa design, Toyota please bring this van back to USA.
We imported an L400 Delica from Japan to Canada a few years ago, and now I'm seriously considering bringing over an Estima as well. It's always good to hear of more 4x4 and AWD minivans coming to North America.
I had 3 prévia AWD, one even went up to 700,000 km... the best machine in the snow.... I am still looking for another one but rare... alléluia !
I still have my 1998 Estima kitted out as a campervan. Absolutely bulletproof.
Minivans are awesome. Low floors and high ceilings makes for lots of comfy travelling space for lots of people. They're also actually less prone to rolling over than SUV's.
Hey, VW had the stones to ask 60-70k for their IDBuzz. Even if Toyota gets hit with a tariff, I bet this will still find a sizable audience esp if it gets a phev or hybrid power train. Bring it back!
My uncle had one and it was so cool looking and praxtical! It fit all the kids and cargo and then some.
I read the article yesterday at the book store. I’m not sure if it would make it stateside though.
Honestly, it probably has a 50-50 shot of coming to the United States. I definitely think tariffs is going to be a big factor in that decision and it also will depend on how the EV market is faring. Because if the EV market is down or there’s not a high demand. It wouldn’t be profitable for Toyota to at least send the EV model to the United States because not only will the EV model be more expensive it’ll also have those tariffs on top of that and that will knock the price out of a lot of more people‘s budgets. The plug-in hybrid would be more likely to come to the United States because of the demand for hybrid and plug-in hybrid Toyotas, however, I still think Toyota should definitely put the RAV4 primes powertrain in the sienna and see how that fares with the consumers for the United States and then bring the previa plug-in hybrid if demand is high for a plug-in, hybrid, sienna and market it as a retro van/an alternative to the sienna plug-in hybrid
Man, give us the hiace
Man, i really wish they sold this for S.E.Asian market as well.
It never go away.
Present as an Estima.
In Japan for over 20years
hello sir, what about Landcruiser mini, could you pls able to do an update on mini LC
Coming...not to America more than likely.
I’m sure someone has already mentioned it. But Actually they released the “Van” prior to the Previa here in the states. From 84-89. I own two of them. :)
A smaller, AWD minivan with removable seats would be a AMAZING. Take my money!
It doesn't look like an egg. It looks like a suppository.
Now this is a cool minivan! 😎
If they're smart, they'll also market it as an outdoor/camper vehicle. Awd and a generator on board.
I have an Estima hybrid... What's weird is that they ever stopped making them. The extended range EV drivetrain is cool. It's worth noting that the Estima was in fact used as a test bed for some of Toyota's first hybrid technology. The Estima hybrid was the first four wheel drive Toyota hybrid back in 2001 and was Toyota's first attempt at converting an existing model to a hybrid drivetrain after the initial development of their hybrid tech in the first gen Prius. So it would make sense for Toyota to use the Estima as a demonstration of a new extended range EV drivetrain. And this is something that they're actually way behind on doing because it's been the obvious next step really since the second iteration of the Estima Hybrid. I doubt that a new version could replace the Sienna though. No way. The American market MPVs are quite a bit larger and different in proportions to the Japanese market. The dimensions reported for the new Estima make it significantly less wide than the Sienna. That wouldn't work in the American market and that's probably why the second and subsequent generations of the Estima weren't sold in America. They too are actually narrower even than the first gen Previa if I remember correctly. The render shown in this video is kinda okay but I wouldn't expect the new Estima to look much like it. Maybe it will have some similarities but I would expect something in styling between the outgoing Estima and the new Prius for design language cues
Rather drive and own a minivan more than a truck any day. Love Japan's K car. Heard their very practical to own.
Love it.
It is a nice looking van. Great size, not too big and spacious enough for the Taiwan market. I saw quite a few when I was there back in 2020.
I had a 2004 Toyota sienna with less than 40000 mile when I bought it used i drove it to 345000 miles with 3.3 v6 still running drive good very dependable i just traded it because ac did not work so I got a 2008 a sienna with. 187000 miles like it so far hope it will be as the old one
Bring it back!
I wish they brought over more of the smaller boxy J vans like the Solio, Stepwagon, Noah, Roomy etc
Would be sweet if it were an EREV (though a PHEV with an EV/ICE hold function is more efficient at freeway speeds) with 80-100 km of EV range and 400-500 km of overall range.
They should be great though, the Previa was ahead of it's time and with a mild refresh to follow the styling of the current Prius it would fit right in with their current lineup!
Love it! But would be totally shocked to see it here.
This is a great design and always liked the original Previa with Supercharged and AWD. I like the idea of EREV, Probably too early for solid state batteries, but a good step towards better batteries.
We need Toyota Alphard and Lexus LM. Both released in South Korea this year and it became instant hit. Alphard sold out immediately and now you have to wait over 2 years to get it delivered.
Previa was the 2nd gen of van. I worked at a toyota dealer in the 80's We had a van before the Previa.
I love that look. But I also loved the 2nd gen Honda Fit and the 4th gen Honda CRV, which was criticized as being minivan like. I could see a very modern MPV with multiple propulsion options being a great addition to Toyotas portfolio.
Yaassss!! Let's bring back the body on frame van next! Imagine a 4x4 e locker minivan on the 4runner platform! Let's gooo toyota!
I demand the Alphard!
Honestly, that would be a great runner up. What a great size and design.
Will Toyota bring back the whistling sound that plagued many Previas too?
Finally a proper minivan that will surely come to Australia & NZ.
If it does come back - I did not have this one on my bingo card. I agree with Kirk that the Previa was always a better looking/ designed vehicle.
Looks good - old and the expected new one - yet is an MPV. Miles more practical than most SUVs for most families. What's not to like? Hope this is a world vehicle.
We need a smaller minivan under 190 inches long. This is great news!
BYD coming to US in the shells of toyota? cheers
Town Ace/Previa/Tarago is the perfect size/height/width van. Better than all the rest I reckon, even better than VW's Kombi/Microbus.
Bring it on Toyota.
I still have mine! The rare 5 speed manual transmission unicorn. Maybe I should buy the new one to say I have them both!
They need to bring the HiAce to the US
02:38 "Buzz around the VW"... I saw what you did there. 🐝😜
Previa that is my first minivan...brought back many memories 😂
Looking at that Previa design, one 20 PMH collision from behind will total this van.
The lack of true bumpers in current designs is costing consumers loads of money. My son was recently rear-ended in his 2018 RAV4. The lack of a true bumper allowed for serious cab intrusion, resulting in considerable damage. He was within 3K of having it totaled, all over a 25 MPH rear-end collision.
Not to mention skyrocketing insurance premiums.
lol i drive a 13 year old phev/erev. 130k miles on the odom, epa ev range new was 38 miles, currently getting 50-55 miles of range. zero range loss in the winter since I either precondition for short drives or use the gas motor for awhile to heat everything. Ive averaged over 80mpg over the past 40k miles since i bought it, and have saved more in gas than the car cost in just 18 months... byd didnt invent the phev/erev, and you can get one for 1/10th the cost of all the "new" cars coming to market. basically zero maintenance since the gas motor gets used so little, no transmission, no range loss. I added 200w of solar panels to the roof to keep the low voltage side topped off which adds to range, and backfeed my house to offset more electricity when im home. people who think theyre saving money buying a depreciating car are massively misinformed and incapable of calculating the opportunity cost of going with the 6000$ option which has basically all the gas savings. you end up saving more money with a phev/erev because gas is cheaper than dc fast charging for long drives. the chevy volt was the most misunderstood and underappreciated car of the early 2010s.
Hope it happens, the Sienna had a good run and reached its final form as a pure hybrid.
I don’t care about the previa, but I do care about any high performance sports cars that Toyota may be bringing! 😅
You and tens of other buyers of sports cars.
@@hongsitu3429😂😂
Oh how I hope this really happens. I've had 3 Honda Odysseys and have been hoping they build a PHEV AWD version like this. But if Toyota does it first then I guess I will be switching badges. :) The only people who dont like a minivan have never driven one. The comfort and practicality cannot be beat
I even like the og Toyota Minivan that was around 1985!
If Toyota gets the solid state battery tech. 700 mile range recharge in 20 minutes. Battery tech now with lithium ion are too combustible.
The current AWD hybrid sienna is the best minivan on the market imo
I wonder if Toyota will simply just rebrand their next minivan in the US as the Previa or Alphard. The original Previa was hated because of its strange design where the engine being located under the driver's seat made it hard for desired options like the V6 engine. The current Previa/Alphard uses a traditional design with the engine under the hood like normal cars
Give us a Japanese small "cargo" van please. I often wonder why we can't get a "cargo" version of the Sienna or Odyssey.
A Proace or Hiace would be nice in the states.
In essence, Toyota was able to materialize the great concept of Pontiac Grand Sport which GM failed to do.
I have never wanted a minivan until I saw this.
From my young childhood days in the island to the time I am to America, only two minivans ever interested and would have love to own, they are the Toyota TownAce from 1988-1991 and the Toyota Previa, and they both still appeal to me. I will be willing to own a minivan as a family vehicle, if they bring back the Previa. Todays minivans does not appeal to me the Modern look of the TownAce / LiteAce does not appeal to me as the older models from 1988 to 1991.
Beautiful vehicle, an awesome idea. Toyota should share this platform with Subaru, since they are partners, and allow Subie to build its own minivan. This would inject some interest back into the minivan market.
What about the dimensions? How does it compare to the Sienna?
We currently have a Sienna and basically have decided to keep it till it dies. Damn thing is rock solid.
Anybody remember the little death trap known as the Toyota Van from the 80's, prior to the Previa?
Make it a hybrid, powerful, AWD, fuel efficiency like the sienna, apple car play, android auto. Don't need to be as long as the sienna. I'm buying 2 of them.
Best Car magazine is usually on the money.
