This ranks alongside the final fight from the Revenant for the most visceral depiction of vengeful rage I've seen on screen. Two men who have nothing to live for except killing the other guy, going at it with everything they've got.
Must have been a pain in the backside to choreograph; there's none of the flynning you often see in movie swordfights, they look like they're actually trying to hit the other and putting real power behind the swings, and with both of them being naked if one of them accidentally hits the other unexpectedly it could really hurt.
Hel is where the dishonorable dead go. Meeting him at the gates of hel is like saying "I'll meet you at my death."
The reason they fight in a volcano is because heat is the driving force of life to the old Norse. These two men are never more alive than when they are in battle.

In the movie I love that before Fjolnir runs at Amleth you can see him in the background just waiting for a few seconds

No modern ethics or morality, either. By our standards neither one is a hero, or "good." But the protagonist is true to his era's standards.
Two men, stripped of everything but their rage, battle on the precipice of hell. Nope, no symbolism here.
Just would like to state: Hel and Hell are two VERY different places. Hel is freezing cold, Hell is boiling hot. So this? Felt a little inaccurate. Otherwise, good.
I would of liked to see the daughter of Loki Hel or Hræsvelgr who sits at the edge of the world.

I would call this, the Gates of Muspelheim.
I guess for modern audiences, the director wanted something most would associate with Hell.
No other script has had such complex and nuanced dialogue in a fight scene.

Scientific fact: Every movie and piece of media would be improved 200% by having it's climax set in an active volcano.

Fjolnir starts the movie weakening his father with arrows before cutting his head off but fights one on one with Amleth and even allows him time to get up from his knees to fight him again. He perceived King Aurvan as a greater threat?
Amleth did kill his wife. With the king it was just politics, with Amleth it was personal. Also it's not like Fjolnir has anything left to live for, he could have won, but I think he was hoping for this exact outcome. What the hell else is he going to do with himself?
It was probably more along the fact that his beef with Amleth was more personal. Also, remember that Amleth had already been wounded repeatedly by his mother and brother, both from slashes and stabbings. It is, in fact, those very wounds which balanced the scales, otherwise Amleth being a one-man army berserker alongside his magical sword would have made short work of Fjolnir.
Best norse movie I've seen by far.

That's what I was thinking while watching this, it looks like the Mustafa scene in Revenge of the Sith but with swords and without one of them burning to death, but they both die though.

just saying, if you are that close to flowing lava and its all smoky, you aren't going to be moving around for long, let alone fight. That smoke would make you choke and pass out pretty quickly.

@@theokirkley It's unimaginative, cliche', misrepresentative, gratuitously violent, artless, patriarchal, formulaic, and plotless. It's an adolescent masturbatory fantasy with absolutely no depth. It's also very poorly made, the use of green-screens is obvious from the very start. Bad lighting, poor cinematography, it's poo all the way to its core. ...in my opinion, of course.
