Eggart is an autist, he did the viking trophe as absolutely authentic to the sources as it could be done. This scene is about the Curios, the young men being thrown out of society to become beasts rather than men. Meaning, entering a different moral universe, that can not sustain society but it is expert at conquering others.

The idea of the wise fool is one that has always been with us, especially in European cultures. Even in Christianity, we have this; the ascetic tradition of the Holy Fools. In fact, that famous cathedral in Moscow, Saint Basil’s - you know the one, the one with all the brightly multicoloured onion domes - is named in his honour. Interestingly, icons of Saint Basil look almost identical to that of Heimir.
The Holy Fools would deliberately act like madmen and lead people into believing they were basically lowlifes and homeless degenerates. They would behave in strange, antisocial ways, often speaking in riddles. But always, there was a deep and mystical point to quite literally everything that they said and did. On the outside, they appeared as the most wretched and ridiculous of all men, but in secret, they were the closest to God. Many even had the gift of clairvoyance. Most of all, they were protected by the kings of the day, despite their behaviours.
I found it rather interesting that War-Raven immediately stepped in to defend Heimir, despite his joke being so crude and offensive. Had it been anyone else, it would have been a death sentence. This is exactly how Tsar Ivan IV “the Terrible” defended Saint Basil, who would, at times, admonish the Tsar in public.

5000 BC arose a culture on the Pontic steppe. That used to throw its young men out of society, where they went through a ritual, leaving humanity, becoming ravenous beasts. This culture, the Yamnaya, conqoured all of the known world and beyond. Descendents of their language is the most widespread language spoken on earth today. So even if this scene comes out as cringe today, it is the most serious attempt in Hollywood history to depict the most important ritual in human history, the ritual that shaped what we all are today. The ritual of the Curio, the descent from being human into becoming a canine predator.
