I get your exact enthusiasm every time. I’ve been on a BMX bike since 1985 and I’m now 49. I was watching Rad with my 8 year old the other day and I told her how monumental this movie was when it came out and how it has stayed with me since some 37 years later. It’s got that 80s cheesiness to it but in the best way and no matter what, John Farnham delivers his own show with this song. It is synonymous with Freestyling culture, this movie and believing in yourself even if it’s just a movie. When you’re an impressionable kid and watching something so relatable and obtainable by practicing and going to local bike shows and factory meets, you could meet these guys and have fun with them because they were making history and that history, like most powerful things in life, was a speck of dust in a timeline but it’s impact was life altering. The world was simpler then and I hold within a special place for then everyday. I still have my GT Pro Performer and I still wrench on it and I still ride. A single father of 2 daughters still living like I was 10.
John’s son has Playing to Win tattooed on his chest as an inspiration coming from his dad. Robert Farnham is in a band called Rival Fire. Worth a listen. They opened for Kiss in Melbourne is their last tour of Australia recently.
I love this song, from the 80’s American movie Rad which John did a few songs on the soundtrack. I watched this movie when I was a kid and it’s awesome, even in the current era, and the music inspiring and timeless.
I loved watching RAD in the 80s when I was young. Even though it's an American movie there were Aussie music artists in it like John Farnham and also Real Life had a couple of songs in it too. I don't think many Aussies knew of RAD. Thanks for the reaction and appreciating an amazing voice and person In John Farnham.
