Oh hey, this is a pleasant surprise. Didn't find this on the Patreon, but hey, I'll roll with it.
This is probably the most iconic song from The World Ends With You alongside Twister (the game's opening theme). As others have said, this is an overworld theme, which tends to play at random points while you're exploring the setting (this sort-of alternate version of Shibuya, Tokyo). TWEWY is very much an oddball game among Square Enix's games (alongside its sequel NEO: TWEWY) for being an urban fantasy based on modern Japan. And because it is an urban fantasy, it takes a lot of inspiration from Tokyo's latest trends at the time, like its fashion, technology, and, most relevantly, its music. Also, the main character wears headphones, so a very popular interpretation of TWEWY's soundtrack is that these songs are what he's _actually_ listening to as he's walking around. TWEWY's an important game for a lot of people. It has a unique and surprisingly complex combat system, and it explores a lot of themes related to growing up in a modern world, like overcoming isolation, being true to yourself, and having optimism that life will get better. I've heard more than a few people talk about how this game helped them overcome their own insecurities and problems as teenagers.
Takeharu Ishimoto was responsible for the soundtracks for quite a few Square Enix games, like FF7 Crisis Core, Final Fantasy Type-0, the Dissidia games, and of course, TWEWY. He also worked on several tracks for the Kingdom Hearts series. From what I've seen, people like his work on Crisis Core and TWEWY the best. The TWEWY soundtrack certainly has a distinctive J-Pop/J-Rock sound to it, though it also seems to have some Western elements that makes it stand out from a lot of the anime songs I've heard. Calling in particular was catchy enough to have a crapton of remixes to its name (even one in Kingdom Hearts, if you can believe it). All of them are varying degrees of ridiculously catchy, to the point that I sometimes hear them in my dreams.
... The song also makes for a hilariously appropriate ringtone.

This honestly stands to me as one of the most outstanding gaming songs for me. It just has such a lasting impression. It's the most iconic song from this series easily.
It helps that this game itself has such a lasting impression on me and if you've ever played it, you KNOW this song.

TWEWY got a phenomenal OST, however most lyrics are connected with certain characters and their stories. Some other notable tracks from those 2 games you can check are:
    Transformation
    Unpainted
    Shibuya Survivor
    We're losing you
    Your ocean
    Storm
    The one star

It's also an evolving soundtrack. Transformation only became associated with the character we all know it as in the remakes - in the DS version, that track never played around that character. We also have songs like Tatakai added that works as a great theme for another character. Final Remix on the Switch, while not as mechanically sound as the DS release, probably has triple the soundtrack

This song is such a glorious earworm, and the soundtrack as a whole for The World End with You as well as its sequel are simply incredible. Calling is definitely one of, if not the most recognizable tracks from the game, to the point where its Kingdom Hearts remix was the sole Dream Drop Distance remix of TWEWY songs to wind up in the Melody of Memories Rhythm game. I'm so happy you checked this out, and I really look forward to seeing what other tracks from the series you'll wind up checking out. Personally, as far as songs in either TWEWY game go, I hope you'll eventually check out other classics such as Twister, Transformation, or Three Minutes Clapping. But you can't really go wrong with songs unique to either installment like Give Me All Your Love from the original or Kill the Itch from the sequel
Before I forget, you accurately guessed at the end of the video that TWEWY is indeed a JRPG, albeit one with very distinct mechanics unlike any of their other properties. I can, however, think of one game that Square Enix has published that is of a very different genre. Specifically, a 3D platformer released in early 2022 that's also fairly well know...for all the wrong reasons.

TWEWY truly was something special, I put so much time into the DS original grinding minor and meaningless things LONG after I'd beaten the game. I consider the original TWEWY to be the second most stylish game I've ever played and it held fast to that top spot for a number of years before getting dethroned by Persona 5.
And yes... This song WAS my ringtone for a very long time.

Funny you should mention this plays a lot, since one of the complaints from the original version was that Calling played too often (it was used a lot as an incidental BGM during exploration and dialogues). It's not quite the main theme of the series, that probably goes to Twister, but it's a *very* popular track. That said, TWEWY got two re-releases, each adding new music and remixes to the collection, alleviating this complaint.
Calling itself has--if I'm not mistaken--10 remixes. Some of those were live-recordings performed by a now-inactive band called The Death March headed by Ishimoto, similar in idea to The Primals, but focusing on remixing Ishimoto's music from whatever project (mostly TWEWY) and some original songs.

Well, to explain it why it sounds like music from the radio, the protagonist of the game, Neku, is kinda anti-social so he keeps his earphones most of the time. The game constantly changes the music in the background or the battle music so it's like you are hearing what Neku is hearing on his earphones. We are listening to his playlist, so there's a lot of variety there, from pop to rock to hip-hop.

This was originally a DS game, though it got a modern port. Neo that you heard before was a new game. And yes it's a song you hear quite a bit as it's one you hear while running around. Sometimes thinking of Persona 4 music turns into thinking of this song too for me haha.

I've heard some music from TWEWY, it has some mentions in the few VGM communities I'm in.
That is groovy, it made my head bop without realizing. The vocals are fun and a bit spacey sounding which is cool. I get an image of a futuristic city at night, someone has said this is basically the music the protagonist is listening to which is cool (I typed this before reading the pinned comment). There's some 80's sounding synths that are pretty cool, it's definitely catchy. It kind of sounds like something from the 2000's I may just be completely wrong haha. Looking at the context it's interesting that I got it kind of right haha, It's a cool song, I don't mind it.

As mentioned in some other comments, this song was remixed for Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, which featured characters from The World Ends With You as minor supporting characters. The remix is titled "Calling (Kingdom Mix)" and feels a lot more upbeat and energetic than this version to better match the tone of KH3D. It also plays exclusively in _two cutscenes_ despite being four minutes long.
Thankfully, Calling (Kingdom Mix) would later be added as an unlockable track in The World Ends With You: Final Remix, and also appears as a playable song in Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory. If you've never listened to it, you really should!

This game was a little bit of an unique experience. It has a bit of point and click exploration, but also combat, and in combat, you had to equip badges that had different abilities, and draw different patterns on screen to attack and use said abilities. I've had many discussions before whether square could pull off or not a proper port for pc that uses mouse. Haha. As of right now, the most accessible game is Neo, which is the sequel, but Neo plays quite a bit different from the first game. Anyway, the premise is the characters are in an alternate reality shibuya figuring out how to go back to the real one (this is as unspoilery as I can muster it.), and so the OST ends up having this quite poppy, hip hoppy vibe, for the most part. there's some very interesting tracks, some can even come off a little edgy, but very fun. I personally like Game Over. Calling was actually the song for the earlier zones I believe, of the game. The game also has different songs for each act of the story. Oh and the character design is made by nomura (same guy as kingdom hearts), if you were curious.

So, something really important about TWEWY and its sequel, is the games have a great and direct message about self expression, its a core theme of these games, the way you interact with your surroundings, express yourself and all that accompanies it, if you check the games OST, you will find that it has a TON, but a TON of variety in its themes, from these more techno-pop, to garage rock, to even nu metal themes, its one of the most oddball Square Enix games but also really loved by those that played it, and i can bet you, each person you may ask, each and everyone will not give you the same answer to what theme is their favorite due to the sheer variety of themes and expression of each player
as a fun fact, most themes are heard at random, there is no set overworld or battle theme, aside certain special cases, such as some bosses or cutscenes, otherwise its all randomized

I knew Takeharu Ishimoto first through FFVII Crisis Core bc I loved his acoustic guitar tracks in that game. Others he worked on would be various FF spinoffs and contributing to other FF and KH games alongside other composers.
I think I first realized it was the same composer as FFVII:CC because one of the songs on the OST, Shibuya, sounded so much like it was from CC that I thought it was a CC track for a while (bc I often listened to big mixed video game playlists). Specifically reminded me a lot of "Where the Sunlight Doesn't Reach" in CC's OST; particularly the percussion and guitar.

As people have said this is a background theme in the game but it does have layers to it. A big one I haven't seen mentioned is that the missions in the game are sent to the player via (in game) text messages. So you "hear them calling" very much refers to to the main characters getting messages from the antagonists of the game.
Though it's a bit hard to say who's a true antagonist in this game. There's certainly bad figures but most "bad guys" really aren't and it's more complicated then that.
Really the World Ends With You is one of my favorite games and it's hard to explain its impact and story. In a broad sense it's about a bunch of people being put in a hard position and overcoming trauma while learning the importance of connecting with others. Very much a coming of age story.

The vocal layering might be a thematic decision. In the original DS version, you control in battle two characters that exist in two separate layers of reality (using the DS two screen feature) and you kind'a need to sync them inorder to fight effectively. On top of that, one of the major themes of the game is cooperation and trust.

Twewy is... interesting, the game itself is VERY fun, the music is good, but not my taste.
But since I had a LOT of friends who were obsessed with this game back then (with cosplay and everything), I always had earworms of the songs. (ESPEICALLY SINCE MY EX HAD THIS AS ALARMSOUND FOR YEARS. THAT WAS TORTURE x,D)
Like it probably will stay there after today for DAYS x,D
But the Songs of the game are all kinda in this style, and since it was a DS game it was like a huuuge technical thing back then, I thought?
It was really hard to get your hands on a cartridge back then in Europe. I still have mine, because gameplay wise, it was one of the MOST iconic games for the DS, because it fully utilized all of it's capacity, with the two displays and the touchscreen and the mic, and the game does not hit the same on other Systems.
All in all still a very nostalgic song.
