The piano represents the protagonist, the synth (to a degree) and the choruses represent Badeline, a generally antagonistic character who is now working with her after story stuff, and the violin represents the dead person she is trying to talk to one last time.
Also you’re right, the melodies that connect together are leitmotifs. The first one being the most prominent motif in the game, generally being happy. The second one is usually more sad, them mixing together has symbolism.

The first melody if i remember well sound when you archieved something dont remember exactly what, i think it was when the player beat a level and unlock the next one, the second one it was recurrent as well but can remember in which points.
Both melodies are related to progress and being archieved something.

This track blends grief and determination in a way that is both motivating and heartbreaking, which perfectly aligns with the story being told. I have immense respect for Lena Raine, her music is fantastic both here and in the other games she has worked on. Also for anyone who has managed to beat this level because it is just absolutely nuts.

It's no surprise it sounds different than what you might have remembered hearing from Celeste before.
It's a soundtrack from a DLC "Farewell", and it came out a couple years after the original game's release.
Lena Raine said that the OST there will be different than the usual Celeste soundtrack.
In Celeste certain instruments symbolize certain chatacters, and Farewell revolves around a different character than the original game, and with that, a new instrument, violin was introduced, symbolizing that character.

  • @BUGFlower413
    @BUGFlower413 2 года назад +104

What's most interesting to me is how in the final section of the music, Lena mixed 3 different leitmotifs at once: Madeline's, Badeline's and the Bird's/Farewell's.
Madeline's determination, Badeline's help and motivation to Madeline and the Bird's/Farewell's symbolising the final goodbye, both story wise and of the game. I swear Lena's music, not only in Celeste is always incredibly godlike TwT
EDIT: Also btw said final part of the music plays on loop during the final big challenge of the game, making it even more emotional than it already is.
EDIT2: I'd bet the violin symbolizes the bird or the chapter itself since I don't recall violin being used before in the OST

12:57 the first one you play is the leitmotiv for Madeline (the protagonist), we hear it in multiple time the whole game, the second one with the violin is the leitmotiv of the last chapter “farewell” which the main theme is “mourning” someone. At the start of the chapter this motif is kinda ominous but at the last part (what you were listening) it is more… encouraging ? Or something like that.
And if you want to continue with Celeste music, “resurrection” and “confronting myself” are 2 excellent one

  • @gurpgoober

Celeste uses its instruments to portray its characters. The piano represents Madeline, the main character, the synth represents her kind of "dark side", and the violin represents a bird you follow in the level. This level is chapter 9 and is titled "Farewell", as it focuses on Madeline losing someone close to her. In the game, the bird was this person's pet, and in the chapter you're chasing it because you're not wanting to accept the fact that their gone. There are 2 melodies that are being played. The first is like the "main theme". It's played throught the entire game. The second melody is like the "Farewell" melody, as throughout the entire level, it's in every song. This song is played at the last part of the level, where you're finally willing to agree that this character is gone, and there's nothing you can do. You realized how deep of a hole you've put yourself into trying to deny it, and now it's time to wake up and accept it. I love it as it mixes both themes symbolizing that Madeline has accepted the truth and is ready to move on

  • @xiloscient3335
    @xiloscient3335 2 года назад +123

14:30 the violin actually does have an important meaning: every character in the game is represented by a specific instrument, and the violin represents the one this chapter's mainly about. along with it, the piano is the main character, and synths are.. another big character that's kinda complex and hard to explain without just spoiling the game (which idk if you're okay with). you should definitely try the game to find out more about all this

I love this track so much. I'd say it's basically about overcoming loss and acceptance of it in-game and it being the final level's soundtrack made it even better and meaningful. Very cool to see you try to piece together the meaning of this song.
To explain a little, the first melody also appears in the first proper level, where the adventure starts and is sort of the main melody of the game. The second melody represent the end of the journey, thus the title "Farewell". The conjunction of the two melodies (I guess) is a way to summarize the journey as a whole. That is the gist of it, at least on a surface level.
As always, a great video Davi!

  • @harley2938
    @harley2938 2 года назад +18

Something significant about this song is the way it appears in the game. It's not a single loop, instead there are 4 separate loops as you progress through the areas. It loops through the first part until you reach a certain point, then it continues through until the second part, then starts looping through the second part, etc. So it builds up as you make progress until the finale.

Celeste constantly also uses instruments to symbolize characters, happy synth/piano for the main char Madeline, angry synth/vocals for part of her (kinda anxiety/depression incarnate but the community calls her badiline, violin for granny and guitar for Theo (he isn’t here in this track lol) for my personal suggestion I’d say Madiline and Theo/star jump for some more leitmotif fun, (madiline and Theo leads right into starjump that I don’t like listening to 1 without the other) great vid I loved how it was presented!

12:10 this melody represents Madeline, the protagonist of the game
12:23 this melody represents a sort of tragedy, or like grief of Madeline because “Granny” is a character who died, which is what this whole dlc is about, so i guess you can say that it’s the motif of this dlc, or Granny’s theme.
    Also, piano also represents Madeline,
    Violin represents Granny
and Synths represent anxiety or the main game’s antagonist, Badeline

I always love finding people who dissect songs because I do that too whenever I hear a new track in a game I play. Been itching to pick up Celest for a long time.
If you ever get the chance, the game Black Mesa (producer is Joel Nielsen) had an amazing OST that took inspiration from the original Half-life soundtrack and put its own spin on it, Joel even reversed his songs and called them 'Mesa Remix', which made it sound really eerie. I have yet to see anyone analyze it and I'd love to see what you think about it! If you can only listen to one then definitely listen to Black Mesa Theme and/or Ascension as these songs are more than a decade apart but yet it still takes inspiration to tie them together to express whats going on in the game, from a sad regretful emotion to a hopeful final push kind of emotion.
Personally I find the music to express a feeling of a melancholy dream or regretful reflection of the protagonists past which considering its a modern take on a game made long ago it feels really appropriate (as if Gordon in the newer games is remembering the horrors he saw back then in a nightmare). My favorite tracks are Black Mesa Theme, End Credits Part 2, Blast Pit 2, Forget About Freeman, Lambda Core, On a Rail 1, Questionable Ethics 1, Residue Processing, Surface Tension 1-4, Transcendent, Entangled, The Hunting, Ascension, Boarder Worlds.

13:30 I think that the first melody is Madeline's leitmotif (the red, sometimes blue or pink-haired girl) which sounds in others tracks like "Madeline and Theo" and "Reach for the summit" (There are more but now I don't remember them). The second melody I believe that is Farewell's leitmotif. At first I thought it could related to Badeline (the purple-haired, which was the main antagonist during the story, being a manifestation of Madeline's inner thoughts), but then I remembered that Madeline's leitmotif usually are played on piano, Badeline's on synths, and the blue bird Madeline is helping through the video is on a violin. So either we drop the leitmotif theory off the window and Madeline and Badeline friendship will be restored again (they had an argument earlier in the chapter), or Madeline is finally understanding that what she was doing during the chapter was wrong and what she must do now. To avoid spoilers, let's just say she was in denial.
Sorry if I made any mistakes, english is not my mother language, but I am always willing to talk about Celeste.

Since you've been branching out into some other games lately, it would be great to see you cover A Hat In Time.
Pascal Michael Stiefel did a great job with it's soundtrack.
It would also be cool if you covered Ark's soundtrack. It was made by Gareth Coker (the guy who made the Ori soundtrack). It also relies heavily on leitmotifs, which is why you should cover the main theme first (if you cover it at all).

  • @extremeisolation

I’m somewhat late to the party and by no means an expert but I’d like to shed a bit of light on some of the motifs throughout the track based in the context of the game.
The first motif/ the one at the beginning represents and is shared between the player character(Madeline) and another character who has a very specific attachment to Madeline. For the sake of spoilers i won’t mention who the other character is. In the game the motif appears in either major or minor chord depending on who it’s meant to represent at the moment.
The second motif is representing another character and interestingly is played slightly differently compared to its use in other tracks
In other tracks within this chapter it’s used in a far more somber tone while in this track it feels like it’s almost urging you to continue. For an example of its more somber use i recommend listening to “fear of the unknown” it takes a bit to appear but you can hear the difference clearly.
There is actually a third motif within this track representing another character who is not present. I’m not good at describing music in text but it’s the main melody in another track called “joy of remembrance”. In “farewell” it joins the fusion of the other two motifs and you can hear it right after the second motif in the fusion.
Do with this as you will, I’m not an expert and this is just stuff I’ve picked up on my own and from others in the community

This is from the DLC that tackles the stages of grief. They’re represented individually, repeatedly, accelerating into a cycle, until they’re smashed together and faced as one unified concept. At the end, to represent the fact that life frankly sucks, there’s a vacuum in the background.

    • @Vgamer311

  • @finleymorris04

Farewell is the third to last track in the game out of a massive soundtrack, so by starting here you’re missing a lot of the motifs and themes that make this theme an utter emotional masterpiece. I’d recommend reacting to at least Resurrections, Confronting Myself, Reach for the Summit (Reach for the Summit is a medley piece that combines musical elements from every previous level), and then the earlier tracks from Farewell (Farewell is a DLC level which is longer than the entire rest of the game combined that was released for free a year after release, this track is played at the final section and so it is named Farewell) such as Fear of the Unknown and Joy of Remembrance. I firmly believe Farewell is the best videogame “level” of all time, and a big reason for that is the music.
In Celeste, the music complements the story, which compliments the gameplay, which compliments the message, and they all compliment each other. It’s a masterful development of game design synesthesia that makes the whole level an emotional and narrative masterpiece.

I've always thought that the violin represents the person that Madeline (the main character) it's mourning here.
Madeline it's usually represented with a piano, but there's a Part of her being represented with the synth, and it's her "sad" part.
That said, the section that is played since 14:09 has always meant for me a Madeline crying (i mean, the synth does REALLY cry here), and the violin is not really the person that Madeline is mourning, but Madeline refusing to accept their departure, hence, the violin "saying" the same as Madeline while she is crying. Pretty much she's there crying, thinking about that one person, refusing to believe that they're gone, but knowing deep inside that they are.
I'd strongly recommend "Confronting Myself", "Resurrections", "In the Mirror" and "Scattered and Lost"
If at any point you have listened to "Prologue", "First Steps", "Resurrections", "Golden" and "Quiet and Falling" then you should also listen "Reach for the Summit". You could listen to it before, but the FULL experience of it comes after listening the other ones, it's the climax of the game.
And i hope this doesn't feel overwhelming, i LOVE this game and im heavily passionate about it. Even if you don't do another video on Celeste, if you can, give the game a chance, it is truly beautiful from beginning to end.

FINALLY, I’ve been waiting for you to upload this today haha. This is actually extra content that wasn’t in the original game. It was added as a update later on which had new music still familiar to the og soundtrack. This chapter doesn’t have that much synth like you previously said in this video like you remember when you heard it. But it is just as memorable and emotional; maybe even more in my opinion. I am proud to say I finished this chapter when it came out because MY GOD was is frustratingly difficult. This track also does a good job of using the last stage of grief which is acceptance. Which also you go through those stages through out the final chapter. Very happy and thankful on your break down of this video Davi. I’ll see you in the next video ✌️

I know I'm late, but I just have to mention that in the part where the melodies are played intermittently, you've identified 2 of the melodies, but the first phrase in that mix is actually a fragment from a 3rd melody that, while similar to the second phrase, is its own distinct leitmotif. It also plays elsewhere in this track, in the bassline starting around 1:23 in the video, which may have been a bit too sneaky to notice :)
