Kevin Smith, like the legend he is, actually joined in on one of the protests against his film. Even made the local news. I wish the rights issue could be worked out so this gem could really shine.
I thought it couldn't be found anywhere because Harvy Weinstein still owns the rights. It wasn't cancelled or anything. Only the catholic church hated on it, but it is probably one of Kevin smiths most well known movies. I know Kevin Smith has said he wishes he could get the rights back so he could do anniversary additions and other stuff. It is just tangled up in the remains of Weinsteins company
I don't think it was even the Catholic church so much. They might have had a problem with it, but I know the Westboro Baptists were protesting it. And they're just assholes.
Yeah, he got way to caught up that with the misconception that this film is in anyway controversial. This film is hard to come by because of licensing reasons and bureaucratic red tape. Not some grand catholic conspiracy.
If you want more Kevin Smith then you gotta start at the beginning with his first film "Clerks" But his second film is my favorite "Mallrats" Which stars Jason Lee who played Azrael. Then you get into the Jay and silent bob movies, all of his films are pretty much in the same universe so it's cool to connect the dots with character mentions and cameos.
I love that the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot kind of called back to ALL of the Kevin Smith movies throughout it lol. And I love that no matter how famous they get, all of his friends still came to be a part of the movie to hang out with their buddy
KS also wrote and directed Chasing Amy. He wrote it about a personal experience so I'll bet the story he tells in the one scene he's in is true. I could be wrong and probably am,, but I think it came out between Mallrats and Dogma. A lot of people would disagree with me but Chasing Amy was/is my favorite KS movie.
This movie is so underrated...! And an absolute shame it was ignored/cancelled all that time. I am a theologian and pastor (protestant, but they won't hold it against me ;) ) and first watched it in my first year of theological college. Ever since, I come back to it now and then, because it is so funny but also it has a spiritual dimension to it. Even uplifting. It is about faith vs. belief (dogma, or church lore) and shows that human dogma is fallible, and that faith is not about just believing a set of church rules. God is greater than that. She really is beyond the human capacity to understand rationally, and that's where faith comes in. In my opinion, any christian who finds this movie offensive, doesn't understand the movie or doesn't understand christianity. Would love to see more reactors picking up on this film, thanks for sharing your first time reaction!
I love this movie, so glad someone is finally reacting to it. Alanis Morrisette is the woman who played god, she is a famous singer and her popping up in this movie was one of the most unexpected cameos.
I have been a Kevin Smith fan since the original clerks came out 30 years ago, this is definitely my favorite movie of his. There are so many great lines of dialogue in this movie.
you're so right, kevin's dialogue is always on point, but never more so than this movie i love the scene on the train when Bartelby and the last Scion keep referring to God as He and She, Him and Her whenever either of them are talkin about Her and how hurt they both are. I actually find this movie quite touching
You said that because this was 20 years ago he couldn't get a cast like this, but he still makes movies, and still gets big names. He and Affleck are good friends, and hes been in several of Kevins movies. Watch any of them, they are all amazing. My fav is Mallrats
Him and Johnny Depp are close personal friends. Their daughters have been going to school together since like 3rd grade. Everybody should watch Yoga Hosers
Hell.. he even got Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, for Jay and Silent Bob Reboot .. even if his movies aren't as sharp as they used to be. Kevin Smith does have a hell of a friends list to pull on for him films.. And Affleck only has a scene in Reboot but damn he was great .
@@mcgilj1 Remember in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Affleck and Damon have a cameo for one scene where Jay and Bob stumble onto the set of Good Will Hunting 2.... Hunting Season. :D
@@peadarruane6582 and Gus Van Santa and the same actor as the antagonist in the scene.. "I WAS JUST HOPING YOU COULD TELL ME ABOUT THE SOUTHERN COLONIES.." saw it three times in the theater opening night.
I'm not usually into Kevin Smith films, but this one had so many good messages and characters and seemed the most "tame" out of them all. It never felt offensive, it had really good arguments. And that news of it not being on streaming services is completely shocking to me.
If you can only remember Alan Rickman as Snape, you badly need to be introduced to his other roles: Die Hard Galaxy Quest Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Sense and Sensibility The January Man
Back in Easter 2000, my mom and I were dying easter eggs and there was a movie playing on TV that was ending, but we didn't change the channel. This movie came on and we were hooked from Jay and Silent Bob's first scene. Its been a family favorite ever since.
When I watched this in middle school circa 2006 it became my favorite comedy at the time. This, Terry Pratchett’s “Small Gods” and Pratchett’s +Neil Gaiman’s “Good Omens” all helped shape a lot of my thoughts on the concepts of organized religion and faith
i feel ya, but all entertainment takes a pretty satirical lens to institutions like religion and government. They can help inform you of some of their flaws, but they are incomplete views. I love Dogma and Good Omens, but I wouldn't judge the Catholic church by them for instance. A two thousand year old institution responsible for almost every hospital, university built for a thousand years and programs to help the poor, the widows, the orphans, and disenfranchised for countless centuries is owed a bit more of an examination than one graphic novel and a 90 minute comedy. I'm not Catholic, but they seem to have done far more good than harm from what I can tell. But that's not sexy so no one talks about it.
@@rockyseverino9230 Well, they were the ones with the power to do that - and the ear of Kings and Lords who they frequently gave license to go to wars, for. Still, a lot of good was done - in an at times, fairly messy way. And also, the Thirty Years War that depopulated whole swathes of rural Europe, but still, errors can be made. And of course, the Inquisition, came somewhat late in the day (as did the Magdalene Laundries) Still, the Catholic Church has a much more positive relationship with, say, astronomy, now.
I've been waiting for this reaction all week. :-) The key to this movie, I think, is that Kevin Smith was raised Catholic, and I believe still considered himself a Catholic when he made the film. It was really a working through of a lot of his ideas and questions about the church, and it's certainly not anti-God. Smith has said he cried when Alanis played him "Still," the song she sings over the credits ("I see you and your selective amnesia, I see you averting your glances, I see you cheering on the war, And I love you still, I love you still"), because it captured something about what he believed.
totally, and there's some "deep cuts" religiously so to speak. The Metatron, the Watchers etc. The actual ritual that is the central conflict of the film. This was not written by an ignorant man. This is way more than surface level stuff. I still bump into the idea that God could be trapped in a human body, but if that didn't happen there wouldn't be a movie, so i just ignore that whenever my logical brain is like, does that make sense? The movie is too fun for that lol
The film wasn´t cancelled and the stars, to the best of my knowledge, have no regrets about making the film. Most of them have gone on to work in other Kevin Smith films. I´ve met him a couple of times (reaaaally nice guy), and, as far as I know, the only contentious cast member was Linda Fiorentino, and I believe that was more a personal and work attitude clash rather than anything to do with the movie. I´m agnostic, and was working as a host in a cinema when the film came out. I was terrified about any protests like in the States, as in the UK, where I'm from, they had the great idea to release it the day after Christmas. I had a small run-in with two Jehovah´s Witnesses, but nothing more. I´m agnostic, but, oddly, I actually came out the film more spiritual than when I went in. I think the film is actually strongly religious and pro-God (Smith is a man of faith), but anti-religion. Hence the protests. The film is not on streaming as HW still owns the rights, and, since all of the news about his crimes came out, Smith has refused to take a penny in royalties from the films they made together. He's a decent, decent man.
I was OBSESSED with this movie back in the day, I still have the vhs in storage from when I worked at the video rental section of our local grocery store!! 📼 lololol It still holds up as one of my favorite movies. This one and the movie Saved! are both hilarious spoofs on religion..... comedy gold!! I'm so glad you reacted to this, it was awesome!
After "Wax on, wax off," at 20:30... "She can rebuild you. She has the technology..." was another tv quote from The Six Million Dollar Man, from the early 70s. ~ ❤ this movie & the cast. Thx for your reaction.👍
Kevin Smith created a cinematic universe called the Askewniverse. It started with Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogman, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Clerks 2, Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!, and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
I love George Carlin as the Cardinal since a LOT of his stand up show was about how he hates religion. Kevin Smith was actually on the news when the show opened because he joined the religious people picketing the movie outside the theater.
This film was not "canceled". The reason that no streaming services have it has more to do with all of the Harvey Weinstein legal problems than "cancel culture". When the film was made, Kevin Smith was working exclusively through Miramax Pictures, which was owned by Disney. Given the subject of 'Dogma', the Catholic League got involved and protested that a family-friendly company like Disney would release a film like this. However, the founders of Miramax, Harvey & Bob Weinstein believed in the film and in Kevin Smith. It was the Weinsteins who had discovered Smith and his first film 'Clerks' (which features Jay and Silent Bob). So, the Weinsteins bought the film from Miramax and released it through another company called Lionsgate. The Catholic League seeing Disney no longer had an interest, dropped the protests even though the film was still released...and the Weinsteins made a boatload of money. 'Dogma' is actually one of Smith's most financially successful films. Around 2008, Smith made a film that bombed and since Weinstein was an unforgiving sort when it came to box office bombs ('Zack and Miri Make a Porno' or 'Zack And Miri') Weinstein and Smith fell out for about a decade. In 2018, the #MeToo movement started with the bombshell of Harvey Weinstein's sexual predator behavior, and the fallout was felt across the entertainment industry. 'Dogma' was tied up in the holdings of The Weinstein Company, Bob and Harvey's production company. Just one week before the shitstorm happened Harvey called Kevin Smith offering him a chance of a 'Dogma' sequel. This was most likely a way for Weinstein to circle his wagons and see what kind of support he could count on before the story of his vile exploits got out...exploits that now have him in jail. Kevin Smith has distanced himself from the Weinsteins and spoken out against them, especially Harvey for the stuff he did. He even pledged monthly support to Women In Film, an organization that helps women behind the camera get their films made. He loves 'Dogma' as it was a way for him to work out his own sense of faith when he was feeling lost. And the film really is about faith, what we believe and how we believe, and what belief is meant to be.
But yet the film is so hard to find. My husband knows I love this movie and paid for a DVD from Japan. I was happy to have a copy but the look on his face when I said “it’s on RUclips but thank you” Never saw anyones face drop so suddenly. (He could have asked or did a quick check on RUclips before dropping $75 on a Blu-ray)
This movie is part of Kevin Smith's A View Askewniverse which started with Clerks. In a way, you will have a better understanding of this and other Smith movies if you watch them all in chronological order. Jay and Silent Bob are recurring characters, and have their own movies. Some of the original Clerks cast cameo in most of Smith's movies and sometimes play the same characters. Start with Clerks, onto Mallrats, maybe Chasing Amy, Dogma then Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, then Clerks 2 (very different from Clerks), jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which should line you up with the upcoming Clerks 3. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/View_Askewniverse
Mallrats would be first in chronological order. The funeral in Clerks was for the girl who died in Mallrats, the one who was supposed to be on the gameshow
@@BondageKitty37 really? i never knew that but then again whenever mallrats comes to mind i can only think of how uncomfortable it would be to have sex in a volkswagen.
Liking this before even watching it. NO ONE reacts to this movie and it is a tragedy. It’s so clever, and I think Alanis as god may be the smartest choice ever. Thanks dude. This made my already decent day, that much better. Also George Carlin as the priest is the best casting ever. Especially if you’re familiar with his comedy 🤣
"Dogma" is my favorite Kevin Smith film! You can't buy it in stores anymore, but luckily I have it on DVD. This film will make you think about Christianity. The Catholic Church was hating on this film.
I saw this in theaters with my grandma when I was 13. By that time I'd already seen Clerks Mallrats and Chasing Amy a million times. I could actually completely quote clerks for a while because I saved the audio onto a cassette tape and just listen to it all the time
alanis morissette plays God she is/was a singer actually. Cast was Insane, unbelievable this was green lit. I think Kevin Smith (Silent bob/Director) is credited by Ben Affleck for giving him the chance to have a leading role (Chasing Amy). Should do Hitchhikers guide to the universe (Alan Rickman voices a robot)
Also x2 the View Askewniverse consists of: Clerks > Mallrats > Chasing Amy > Dogma > Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back > Clerks II > Jay & Silent Bob Reboot > Clerks III (releasing next year I think). Jay & Silent Bob are in them all and they all connect to the same universe. Kevin Smith has other movies, but these are the gems.
Love this movie. Actually used part of it while teaching religion. It has one of my favorite "scenes that should never have been cut from a movie", where Azrael explains Hell to Bethany (The scene can be found on youtube)
This movie has never been cancelled. I've seen movies way worse than this. Apparently you can't find it because of something to do with Harvey Weinstein owning the rights. Canceling stuff is a pretty modern thing that has only really been happening for less than a decade. Films used to get banned years ago but it had more to do with extreme violence and or sexual content of an extreme nature. This film never even came close to being banned but it did piss off religious people. Kevin Smith's parents were very religious and I don't think they had a problem with it. You should look up Kevin Smith being interviewed when he was at a protest against the film. The film crew didn't realize who he was and he just goes along with it 🤣🤣
Cancelling stuff isn't a modern thing - it's not even a thing. "Cancel culture" is not real. It's just a catchphrase used by shitty comedians to make excuses when people don't laugh at their shitty jokes.
Seriously, this movie only caused drama among the fanatical catholics. Everyone I knew just thought it was funny. I got a real kick out of the idea that not being on streaming services meant it was all but eliminated from the face of the earth. This 'society' is a complete dumpster fire these days.
uh, no offense dude, but "cancel culture" has existed for the entirety of the human species. think about all the things the conservatives of any given era have tried to cancel because of their rigid view points. hell, the catholic church alone is responsible for a crap ton of canceling over the centuries its existed.
@@1369Stiles ok I'll partly agree with you. But it wasn't really like it is now. The internet has magnified it by 1000. I'm left wing politically but I'm not on the side of some of the far left today. They are as bad as the religious nut jobs that were about when I was younger and they didn't have the backing of the main stream media and a lot of the companies. Fart in the wrong direction today and you can get cancelled.
Kevin Smith is a very different type of director. He built his own way up by self-financing the ultra low budget CLERKS by maxing out his own credit cards. His films have a very DIY feeling to them. CLERKS 2 is one of my favorite films of all time.
"maxing out his own credit cards." -- To hear Smith tell the story, he also had more credit cards with higher credit limits then by any rights he should have had at the time, considering he was a struggling film student. He'd fill out the credit card application forms and would put down the phone number of the video store he was working at. When the card issuer would call, asking about the application, he'd answer the phone, giving some name other than Kevin, and so when they said they needed to verify the income that had been submitted on the form, he'd tell them "Kevin Smith? Yeah, he owns this video store and a few others. He's absolutely making that much a year in profit, if not more." Of course, even with that, the entire budget for Clerks ended up being less than the budget to make the music video for Soul Asylum's song "Can't Even Tell", which had been on the Clerks soundtrack. The band had Smith recreate one of the memorable scenes from the movie, except in color.
Fun Fact: Jay & Silent Bob are the only two characters to appear in every Jersey Trilogy movie. Ben Affleck has appeared or voiced a character in every movie except Clerks but he doesn't play the same character in all of them. He has one recurring character, Holden McNeil from Chasing Amy, J&SB Strike Back & Reboot. He and Matt Damon reprise their Chuckie Sullivan and Will Hunting roles from Good Will Hunting in J&SB Strike Back, so he plays two characters in that one making up for missing out on Clerks, I guess.
do they actually play those characters in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that they play themselves on a movie set playing those characters? But yes, Ben has at least two (maybe three if we count mallrats) characters. I don't think the mallrats character he played has ever made a reappearance tho. Probably still trying to lure underage girls into that volkswagen. Which are notoriously uncomfortable from what i understand.
@@rockyseverino9230 Didn't you read my follow up? I said they were playing themselves playing those characters. He played Shannon Hamilton in Mallrats, Holden in Chasing Amy, J&SBSB & Reboot, Bartleby in Dogma, "Gawking Guy" in Clerks 2. I was mistaken about the Super Groovy Cartoon Movie, it was Kevin Conroy, the other Batman, as the Mayor.
i always liked Dogma, i get it's not for everyone, but hey, it's a comedy. It's supposed to be irreverant since you're a star wars fan you should watch his next movie called Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It's my favorite Kevin Smith film. Most people would probably say Clerks tho I don't think it's "banned" per se. I think the rights are just murky with Miramax and everything, but it was controversial obviously As for why they accepted these roles I'll tell you the story. Ben Affleck in his first role was in Kevin Smith's second movie, Mallrats. They became very close friends and he's been in several Kevin Smith movies. But Ben and Mat wrote a movie called Good Will Hunting. Ben and Mat both won the oscar that year for best screen play, it essentially made both their careers. Well Kevin Smith being friends with Ben Affleck talked the heads of Miramax into making the film, he's the reason it happened, they took a shot on these two essentially unknowns, and it made a ton of money, it won everyone oscars including Robin Williams with his only Oscar win, and so of course when Kevin asked them to be in his next movie only a year later... would you have said no? Plus everyone loves Kevin. He may not be the greatest film maker of all time, but he's a pretty great guy, and as you can see, he swings for the fences, he tries new things, he isn't making just the next hollywood cookie cutter movie, whatever he does, is going to be interesting, and at that time he was thought to be possibly a big up and comer himself after Clerks and Mallrats, and then Dogma, Chasing Amy, (also staring Ben Affleck, and remember he was in Mallrats, so basically Ben was in Kevin's first three movies, then in the in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, then in Jersey Girl etc. They have a very long history together. In fact the house Kevin has lived in since the late nineties... He bought from Ben! He lives in Ben's old house! Which had a batcave in it....). So I think that explains why at least Ben and Mat were in the movie, and essentially these were exciting people to work with in the late nineties, so you could also get Alan Rickman (you say snape, i say Hans Gruber), Selma Hayak, George Carlin, Chris Rock etc. Anyway, i hope this wasn't too boring to read, and i adored the reaction! (still hoping you do the rest of the Bourne Trilogy!)
This is an amazing movie, mostly because of how well the performances sell the story. There's very little in the way of special effects, but you buy it all anyway. Take the scene with the Mooby executives for example. No special effects, just dialogue and good writing. And yet what's happening is totally fantastical. Same with when Loki and Bartleby are arguing in the garage. They totally sell the drama. It's like watching a play.
"you're talkin about fuckin WAR on GOD. well fuck that. I've seen what happens to the proud when they take on the throne." such a good piece of dialogue
How Bethany got hurt. Watch the scene where Bethany wakes up God again. God's energy shoots across the room and hits Bethany in the stomach. That's both how she got hurt and pregnant.
Nah dude, Not quite right. The energy did hit her and cause the wound but that wasn't the deeper meaning of why it happened. What happened is what's known as Stigmata, Stigmata is displaying the wounds of Christ and is associated with saints/those who have been touched by God. The final wound was when they took him off the cross they stabbed him in the area of the liver to make sure he was dead... As to when Bethany was made pregnant it was never really said when it happened but I kinda think it would be when God had their hands over her tummy while healing her.
You do realise you stepped into the middle of the whole realm of Jay and Silent Bob.. This has now pretty much compelled you to see CLERKS, MALLRATS, CHASING AMY, JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKES BACK, CLERKS II, JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT and upcoming CLERKS III? I can't speak for most of the cast, but Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Kevin Smith have a history of collaboration and friendship. Somewhat later the late, great George Carlin also seemed to become a part of the Jay and Cilent Bob circle, which was probably quite natural. IN the series this film is probably the highest profile dig that the Jay and Silent Bob series have achieved, but they're all great in some way or form. There's a certain something about the logic that they bring to the material they write which is delightfully anarchic, hence the pliability of this towards George Carlin's vociferous truth telling.
What is really strange is that as much as it pokes fun at Catholicism, it has some pretty positive messages about religion. I love Chris Rocks character sayong something to the effect of it being better to have ideas instead of beliefs, since you can change an idea, learn something new, and evolve. I feel like it pokes fun more at branches of Christianity, and specific kinds of Christians, for straying from the core path of their own religion. How many have twisted the messages of Christ over the centuries. And seeing as this is coming from me (an agnostic) if i can find this uplifting in a spiritual sense then Kevin Smith succeeded......or failed, depending on what he intended. :P
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Hit me at the right age and really made me grow up in a lot of ways. Fantastic reaction to a fantastic movie!
I'm not super religious by any means, but I will call things out for being blasphemous. I am a fan of kevin smith and bias aside, dogma is NOT offensive or sacrilegious in any way. I always make sure i say, "bless you" when i hear anyone sneeze, no matter how far away they are! Better safe than sorry...
The reason why Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are in this movie is that Kevin Smith pretty much started their careers in his second movie "Mallrats" when no one else would really give them a chance. Yes there careers didn't really kick off fully until they wrote and stared in "good Will hunting" but without Kevin they may never have got their foot in the door. Both of them have been a few of Smith's other films as they are still friends ish. The other cast joined really because of them and smith at the time was considered one of the best up and coming writer directors. This is probably my favourite of his.
The year Good Will came out was huge for both . Chasing Amy in April.. The Rainmaker came out in the fall. Good Will Hunting was released that winter.. the next summer saw Armageddon and in the fall Saving Private Ryan.. they were literally filming Dogma and took a break to pick up their Academy Award for screen writing .
@@guitarheroplayer-fs5js sorry yes you are correct. It's chasing Amy I was thinking of. He's literally only in one scene I think. It's been a while since I have seen either of them
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck both claim to owe their success to Kevin Smith and will likely agree to be in any movie he asks them to be in. Smith is the one that got Harvey Weinstein on board to make Good Will Hunting which jump started their careers and landed them an Oscar for Best Original Screen Play.
Legitimately only ever found this movie at the video store, never in a store you could buy video tapes or DVD’s Also Alanis Morissette as god has got to be one of the funniest and most iconic castings
This has to be one of my favorite movies. Honestly, I don't know why it would be "cancelled". Sure, it might not be for everyone but that's what movies are. I don't care for horror movies so I don't go and see them. If you're a highly religious person and you're going to be really sensitive to your religion being poked fun at then maybe DON'T go see this movie. I thought it was hilarious and I hate the fact that you can't see this on any streaming services. Sure, I have it on DVD but I've gotten so used to streaming stuff that putting a DVD in is just too much work. haha I also find it a little bit funny because I know a ton of Catholics and Christians got really upset about the idea of this movie (so many didn't even watch it yet protested it all the same) but me, as a life-long atheist, this movie is probably the closest thing that got me to considering any of it to be true. It was a really entertaining story and I kind of liked the idea of that stuff going on out there. Not the murder and all of that but just the whole backstory and those beings seeming more real. And funny. Obviously didn't do enough because I still don't believe in any of that stuff. If no one has mentioned it yet this movie is actually part of a series of movies. They don't really have all that much to do with each other so it's not like you need to see one to understand the next, but some will take place in a similar area or make slight references to each other. On top of that a lot of them will share actors in different roles and a lot of those roles are filled by the director's (Keven Smith) friends. Ben Affleck he's been friends with since they worked on Mallrats (another movie in this series), he helped him and Matt Damon on Good Will Hunting and was close to him too, his friend and producer Scott played the guy on the bus who got shot, two of his other friends play protesters (as the same characters from Mallrats), one of his friends is the reporter on TV, and Jason Lee he knew since he was in Mallrats. Not to mention he plays Silent Bob and Jay is basically a character based off of his friend Jason... who plays Jay. Honestly, I think you should watch all of his movies. They're not all "cancel-worthy" mockeries of religion. They'd probably get cancelled for something else but Dogma was the main target.
I'm religious and i've always loved this movie. I've always been kind of surprised people were so triggered by this movie at the time. I think it's actually done in good fun, and I don't really see a criticism of the faith itself, only some of the institutions around it. That's not the same thing in my opinion, and institutions should be criticized to keep them from getting bent and rotten. That can happen to anything, including the church.
@@rockyseverino9230 Historically the church held a large amount of power. Power is something that can easily corrupt. So really the church is something that should have REALLY been watched to prevent such a thing but I don't think we did and so things got worse. I understand having something you love and then not being a fan when people make fun of it. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I used to get a bit "triggered" when people would make fun of it. But over time I learned that people had different points of view and they're really there to just entertain people (who probably already think like them) and so I just ignored it instead. Or actually listened sometimes and considered their critiques. I never DREAMED of protesting or boycotting something because they made fun of my precious Star Wars. (I realize a movie franchise and religion are a bit different but the idea should be the same)
This has to be in the comments already, but, the reason Damon and Affleck are Smith's friends and appear in many of his early movie is this - after Smith broke through with Clerks, he was also hired behind the scenes as a screenwriter and 'script doctor' across Hollywood, which is where most of his money comes from. One of the films he worked on, to fix up and get ready for shooting was Good Will Hunting, which Damon and Affleck got an oscar for and Smith went uncredited. They even joke about it in Jay and Bob Strike Back.
I worked about a month or so on this film while it shot in the Pittsburgh area. I helped make and apply the “matter” that the Golgothan is covered in and dripping. As far as I remember everyone was decent. Never saw Damon or Affleck. It’s also a shame because there was a longer fight with him but it got trimmed down and some reshoots.
@@ItsAPrimatee Fun fact... Affleck and Damon won an Oscar for Best Screenplay for the movie Good Will Hunting. The scene on the bus was filmed the night they got back from receiving their Oscars.
Seems like you are assuming that most people don't know about this movie but I assure you, this is a VERY popular film, at least for an indie. I don't think the content of the movie is the reason it is hard to find these days, I think it's because it was released by Miramax which no longer exists and they just haven't pushed to get it back out there.
the reason this movie isn't available is because it's owned by the Weinstein company, Kevin Smith doesn't want anything to do with them and wants to buy the rights to the movie, but the Weinstein company refuses to sell and wants to release it instead, Kevin won't agree to that. The obvious reason being what Harvey did.
Conservatives hated this movie, thought it was making fun of their religion, boycotted theatres and whatnot. Funny thing is Kevin Smith actually became a Born Again Christian and even quit smoking weed for a short period which is why he wrote it in the first place.
Red State was walked out on by the Westboro Baptist Church members because the main villain was a spot on representation of their leader Freddy Phelps. That was even more controversial, it's a thriller/horror about a religious cult.
The fact that he wrote the line, were you to hear it your head would explode and your heart would cave in your chest and then to have God be Alanis Morissette was brilliant writing, and what a sport Alanis is for embracing that joke about her. That said, the song used in the end credits, Still is fricking amazing and terribly underrated
RIP to the great Alan Rickman! Hans Gruber taught snape everything he knows...

Yeah, he got way to caught up that with the misconception that this film is in anyway controversial. This film is hard to come by because of licensing reasons and bureaucratic red tape. Not some grand catholic conspiracy.
@@MegaBollard yea far worse movies than this. I got it on dvd in the early 2000s might even be a blu ray version for purchase.
It was once on Amazon prime in HD for a bit. I just saw blu ray on Amazon is going for $150
That bishop was George Carlin, standup comedian known for ripping the church. What a cast indeed.
I loved the Howling reference when Azrael says " Go ahead bright boy.
Don't you know anything? " And then gets destroyed by the blessed driver.
I fuckin love this movie!!! I can't believe you are reacting to this brother. It's such a classic movie. The nostalgia is real!!
Amen!

I have seen what happens to the proud, when they take on the throne.
If you want more Kevin Smith then you gotta start at the beginning with his first film "Clerks"
But his second film is my favorite "Mallrats"
Which stars Jason Lee who played Azrael.
Then you get into the Jay and silent bob movies, all of his films are pretty much in the same universe so it's cool to connect the dots with character mentions and cameos.
If primate starts watching all the Kevin Smith movies I'm gonna cry of happyiness
I love that the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot kind of called back to ALL of the Kevin Smith movies throughout it lol. And I love that no matter how famous they get, all of his friends still came to be a part of the movie to hang out with their buddy
It’s the same with his new horror movies
Chasing Amy
I'm an atheist, but when i see religious people share the same sense of humour and can laugh through art - is a truly beautiful thing.
It was never cancelled. It's just caught up in the Harvey Weinstein thing.
There are so many great lines of dialogue in this movie.
you're so right, kevin's dialogue is always on point, but never more so than this movie
i love the scene on the train when Bartelby and the last Scion keep referring to God as He and She, Him and Her whenever either of them are talkin about Her and how hurt they both are.

I'm not usually into Kevin Smith films, but this one had so many good messages and characters and seemed the most "tame" out of them all. It never felt offensive, it had really good arguments.
And that news of it not being on streaming services is completely shocking to me.
If you can only remember Alan Rickman as Snape, you badly need to be introduced to his other roles:
Die Hard
Galaxy Quest
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves
Sense and Sensibility
The January Man
Back in Easter 2000, my mom and I were dying easter eggs and there was a movie playing on TV that was ending, but we didn't change the channel.
And of course, the Inquisition, came somewhat late in the day (as did the Magdalene Laundries)
Still, the Catholic Church has a much more positive relationship with, say, astronomy, now.
I absolutely love Dogma. One of those movies I watch when I need something to get my mood up.
Kevin Smith is a real cool dude 😌 Makes movies he likes with a real DIY vibe to them. Really started from the bottom. Low key a role model lmao
Also PS I’ve always knew Alanis Morissette was GOD 👏🏼👏🏼🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
Right? It certainly makes as much sense as the Bible🤣
I've been waiting for this reaction all week. :-)
The key to this movie, I think, is that Kevin Smith was raised Catholic, and I believe still considered himself a Catholic when he made the film.

Finally someone reacting to some Kevin Smith goodness! You should check out all the Clerks movies.
You only know Alan Rickman as Snape... we have failed you! So, we now need to make sure Primate watches Die Hard and Robin Hood Prince of Thieves...
After "Wax on, wax off," at 20:30... "She can rebuild you. She has the technology..." was another tv quote from The Six Million Dollar Man, from the early 70s. ~ ❤ this movie & the cast. Thx for your reaction.👍
Alan Rickman was also in Die Hard. I believe that was his first film.
So happy that Dogma is getting some love! You most definitely check out the rest of the View Askew Universe!
WHOA never thought i would see a reactor do this movie!! So glad to watch!
Kevin Smith created a cinematic universe called the Askewniverse. It started with Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogman, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back, Clerks 2, Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie!, and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.
i love this movie! it really makes u think about certain things! great actors all around!!
I love George Carlin as the Cardinal since a LOT of his stand up show was about how he hates religion. Kevin Smith was actually on the news when the show opened because he joined the religious people picketing the movie outside the theater.
Dogma is pretty much the 1999 version of This Is the End! With the all star cast of that year!
When she pulled God off of life support, one of the bolts of lighting from when he was released from the body hit her in the stomach.
I was happy to have a copy but the look on his face when I said “it’s on RUclips but thank you”
Never saw anyones face drop so suddenly.

Mallrats would be first in chronological order. The funeral in Clerks was for the girl who died in Mallrats, the one who was supposed to be on the gameshow

"Dogma" is my favorite Kevin Smith film! You can't buy it in stores anymore, but luckily I have it on DVD. This film will make you think about Christianity. The Catholic Church was hating on this film.

Wait, what a Clerks III????

An underrated classic that I’d had no idea had been scrubbed from the internet. Somehow I’d forgotten George Carlin was in this. Absolutely wild.
George Carlin must have jumped at the chance to play his character! He hated Catholicism because he was raised Catholic. 😂
You gotta hook 'em young, amirite?
This movie was cancelled only because Harvey Weinstein owned the rights to it but now that lions gate owns it. Maybe it can come back.
uh, no offense dude, but "cancel culture" has existed for the entirety of the human species. think about all the things the conservatives of any given era have tried to cancel because of their rigid view points. hell, the catholic church alone is responsible for a crap ton of canceling over the centuries its existed.
Also Matt Damon reprised his role as Loki in a cameo in 2017 in "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot"
Yessss. Love this movie.
Edit: I forgot the George Carlin cameo!
This movie wasn’t cancelled back in the day. That happened recently.
Right. It wasn’t that big of a deal when it came out. Getting offended & wanting to cancel things you don’t like is much more 2020 than 1999.
He's absolutely making that much a year in profit, if not more."
Of course, even with that, the entire budget for Clerks ended up being less than the budget to make the music video for Soul Asylum's song "Can't Even Tell", which had been on the Clerks soundtrack. The band had Smith recreate one of the memorable scenes from the movie, except in color.
God is played by Alanis Morrisette! 😂
Look up the deleted scene of Azrael’s rant. It’s really some great acting from Jason Lee.
Correction, Ben and Matt are playing themselves playing their roles from Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.
do they actually play those characters in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back?
It's supposed to be irreverant
since you're a star wars fan you should watch his next movie called Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. It's my favorite Kevin Smith film.
Most people would probably say Clerks tho
I don't think it's "banned" per se. I think the rights are just murky with Miramax and everything, but it was controversial obviously
As for why they accepted these roles I'll tell you the story.
This movie is so underrated
The casting in this film is PERFECT!!
Except I didn't care for the main actress from Men in Black. Someone like Linda Cardellini wouldve been perfect.
@@A-Dubs398 she was still pretty much a baby in 1999. That was around her Freaks & Geeks time.

Alan Rickman (RIP) was a genius playing villains. 'Die Hard' is a must-see.
I love The Accountant. It seems like so few people have seen it. Excellent fight scenes.
@@spriken Good theory, very plausible, but unless either of us sits down and interviews Kevin Smith, we'll never really know. 😉

The best part about Dogma was watch Kevin Smith on the news going to the boycott and pretending to be a protester.
Legitimately only ever found this movie at the video store, never in a store you could buy video tapes or DVD’s
Also Alanis Morissette as god has got to be one of the funniest and most iconic castings
Sure, I have it on DVD but I've gotten so used to streaming stuff that putting a DVD in is just too much work. haha
I also find it a little bit funny because I know a ton of Catholics and Christians got really upset about the idea of this movie (so many didn't even watch it yet protested it all the same) but me, as a life-long atheist, this movie is probably the closest thing that got me to considering any of it to be true.
(I realize a movie franchise and religion are a bit different but the idea should be the same)
"Tell 'em Steve-Dave!"
6:30 If you haven't seen him in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves that's a pretty good movie and well worth watching
One of Smith's greatest works. Classic.
That’s awesome!
@@ItsAPrimatee Fun fact... Affleck and Damon won an Oscar for Best Screenplay for the movie Good Will Hunting. The scene on the bus was filmed the night they got back from receiving their Oscars.
Now you know why Matt Damon had a cameo in Thor Ragnorok as Loki. Lol
That cameo was very low-key, geddit? Ok, I'll get my coat.

I saw this in the theater and loved it. I own the collector's edition.
the movie is not extreme and it is not cancelled or banned anywhere. It's not on streaming platforms due to licensing issues.
You've got to watch Kevin Smith's other movies like Clerks and Mallrats.
And no mention that God is Alanis Morrisette? 🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥
Matt and Ben kill it in this movie, their chemistry is so great and their in their prime
I love watching all the movies in the view askewniverse, I can’t pick my favorite because they’re all so amazing.
the reason this movie isn't available is because it's owned by the Weinstein company, Kevin Smith doesn't want anything to do with them and wants to buy the rights to the movie, but the Weinstein company refuses to sell and wants to release it instead, Kevin won't agree to that.
