Don’t forget to take care of yourself…so much activity in flight sim today…if your going to sit in front of the PC for hours…at least get comfortable! 😀
Playseat Foldable for Sim in planes and cars -occasionally with additional seat cushioning for car seats
The best thing I ever did for my sim was to head to the auto junkyard where I was able to buy a 2017 Honda Accord leather driver's seat for $30. I made a simple frame out of 2X6 lumber and I was good to go. The fore & aft positioning of the seat still works like it would in the car and there is a nice map pocket on the back of the seat where I stuff flight sim notes, manuals, etc.
I have used many chairs over the years, currently I have an OMP buckekseat which sits on office style stand with castor wheels, it came with their own OMP lumber and neck support cushions. It cost me £200 imported from Italy and I have had it just under 2 years and very comfortable indeed. I don't spend much more than 4hrs at a time on my pc and have no aches or pains like i did with other chairs I had over the years.
This is my favorite sim channel. Good stuff
If you include the PC and VR headset my flight setup along with all the software addons, my flight cockpit setup is probably getting close to £10,000 since December 2020. I have the Playseat Airforce chair, with my yoke mounted on to it, as my flight cockpit is several feet away from my PC, behind the sofa in the lounge. I like the fact it has rails rather than castor wheels and I have a Playseat mat underneath to protect the carpet. The mat is actually super handy for my Thrustmaster pendular rudder pedals as well, I was able to velcro the pedals to the mat and they haven't budged an inch in 18 months, even when differential breaking.
Really interesting this one. This is a subject that I've had to tackle personally a number of years ago due to a degenerative spine condition that reared it's unwelcome head towards the end of my thirties. I have tried all manner of chairs over the past 6 years and I have to take it just as seriously as choosing an appropriate wheelchair. I've found that for my specific needs I require a specialised orthopaedic office chair. One of the features I always try to include are fold-down arm rests. It really helps when you want to clamp sticks and yokes to your desk to be able to swing the arms out of the way completely.
Regardless of whether someone is disabled or fully mobile, I cannot stress enough the importance of investing in the right tool for the job. Excellent video as always Mark. 👍
Very interesting to see this addressed. I've spent a lot of time considering ergonomics and different chairs as I get both lower back and neck and shoulder pain from extended sessions in the SIM.
Ive made a number of low cost mods to my office chair:
- I have a mouse platform on the right armrest with a Logitech trackball. This avoids over extension with a mouse on a crowded desktop.
- On the other armrest I have a pocketed organiser to hold my tablet, charts checklists etc. This again helps avoid holding uncomfortable postures.
- as the armrests are fixed and the seat too low this was causing neck pain , so I used a firm, deep cushion to boost the seat and allow the arms to rest with forcing shoulders into a shrug.
The best hack of all is totally free: yoga!
If you use rudder pedals - I ended up setting my office chair so it sits in my own peice of wood to STOP the chair from moving, and is connected to a wooden mount that the pedals sit in, so basically, the chair cannot move away or to the rudder pedals.
Most my spending have now gone towards flight training. Its a lot more expensive but much more rewarding. I have never tried VR in the sim. Have yet to get headset.
Shorter flights are a great solution. Also, Tempurpedic makes a super comfy memory foam cushion that will soften the impact of sitting in that pilot seat for protracted periods. Don't forget to put on the auto pilot and get up and walk about during longer flights to fight the development of Deep Vein Blood Clots (DVT) which once formed, can migrate through your system to your heart, lungs, or brain and cause death. It's a real 'thing' that many are not aware of. So yes, a comfy 'chair' or 'seat' helps matters, but the key is to help your body circulate your blood, that requires 'going vertical' (moving about). Hope this helps.
I use a 30 year old Herman Miller and it is as comfortable and supportive as the day it was new. 10 out of 10
Hi Mark, I think another important consideration is to exercise sufficiently to compensate for the time seated. I’ve spent many VR hours in a single session and you need to think about the health alerts with long haul flights, where you need to get up and move etc. We can get consumed with our simming to the exclusion of our long term health.
Agreed, I am also reasonably disciplined in taking breaks, but not always!
As I move my Xbox between properties and also use TVs I use a folding picnic chair. The fabric type with cup holders in the arm. I use a bean lap tray for the joystick and throttle and very small wireless keyboard. Onto the leg of the chair a long gosseneck to hold the XBox controller. Amazingly it works very well!
🤣 and portable too!
I'm currently using a Secret Lab Titan. I found it pretty good overall, but needed to add a softer cushion and some lumbar support to it in order to avoid back and hip pain.
Another important point would be that sitting is the new smoking.... Meaning that being sedentary is really bad for health. Nothing wrong with some marathon sim sessions, but It's also very important while doing them, to get up, walk, stretch, and make sure to move the rest of the day.
I'm a MSFS and DCS player. My mentality at this point is that if I want to fly like a pilot, I have to be fit for duty like a pilot... Or at least a reasonable facsimile.
Nice subject to talk about thanks for that.
Looks like a good chair. Being able to remove the headrest is important for me. Not so much for cable management but because the headset with counter balance gets pushed forward by a headrest. That leads to neck ache☹️. Removing the arms could be very useful for seated VR experiences too. Unfortunately I use one simrig to both fly and drive in, so I'm a bit limited for seat choice.
Hi Mark. I have a Herman Miller Aeron chair which I'd rate as a 9/10. I have a wooden floor and replaced the casters with pedestals. Rock solid and wonderful lumber support. Well worth the investment.
Educational and Entertaining as always Thank You and Good Thoughts for Her Majesty and Her Family
Sorry for the Loss of Her Majesty We in Canada are thinking good thoughts
Very interesting topic! When I finally started putting together my simpit, I decided to use a seat from the middle row of a 2009 Honda Odyssey. Found one 2nd hand for $20! Very convenient since they are meant to be easily removed from the vehicle and includes hardware to slide forward and back. The tricky part was figuring out how to mount it to my plywood floor of my pit, not a simple task. As far as comfort, it’s an 8/10 for me!
Sounds brilliant
very interesting , thanks
Having a number 5 office chair I had to replace two casters for rubber feet in order to stop the moving while working the rudder. Still very comfortable. 😅
Very nice video Mark and very important observations. Like Judge I too have a SecretLabs Titan XL. However, unlike him I really love mine. However, my requirements are above average. At 6'8" and 320lbs I generally don't fit comfortably in most chairs and over the years I have broken the welds on many of them. What I like about the Titan XL is I finally found a chair that not only fits me, but it's rated for someone up to 6'9" and 350lbs. Like your BS10 it has adjustable lumbar support that comes up high enough for me. Most of my prior chairs the lumbar support was more like a bump that pushed on my bottom as it didn't come up high enough. Mainly because not only am I taller than the average person, I'm also equally distributed in that I'm exactly the same length above and below my waist. By comparison my two younger brothers, both 6'4", are just the opposite. One is long legged with a shorter torso and the other is short legged with a longer torso. It also has a removable headrest (It's magnetically attached) as well as removable/replaceable armrest pads. The arms themselves are not removable. One other feature I liked was if you posted a picture of your chair on social media they added 2 years to the warranty, so it's covered for 5 years. That's of value to me as I'm never sure if even with a chair with specs this high I won't still end up breaking it somehow.
Interesting, I may have to get one to compliment my desk (oh and thanks for the shout-out :)
On this subject: I'm about to move into a new place in a couple of weeks, so I went out hunting for the perfect chair today - I think I found it; the only danger is that I'll fall asleep in it 😂
Mark I know its not ideal for health re sitting for hours... But the other side of the coin is in the last two years I have had to learn PC software as the MFS2020 sim has been a very difficult process re millions of bugs and countless re install/ upgrades.....Then learning flying, Navigation, Vatsim etc etc so it really has had a benefit to my Brain by keeping memory active which is a priority for anyone over 21...
Hello Mark, Out of this topic, do you know is it possible to change in MSFS2020 the fuel consomption wish it is not conforme with the reality of the plans. And tanks for your info about the chairs !
That is up to the dev of the aircraft and not configurable in sim
Does the swiveling bottom bother you when flying in the sim? It does for me as when you move your legs on rudder pedals, it pivots your lower body back and forth. I stopped using my office chair (good ergo one) for this specific reason. I use a non rolling/swiveling plastic outdoor chair with a comfort pad on the seat. I wish office chairs came with a way to lock out the swiveling like you can with the wheels.
No it doesn’t lock, but the position of the rudder pedals is important, I don’t have a swivel issue.
Chair looks good
Great review and I really like the design. Some gaming chairs look absolutely ridiculous and childish, but this looks rather professional. I currently use a Secret Labs Titan chair and I really do rate it, but it's a tad expensive. My dogs are slowly destroying it though with their claws oops! I'll have a look at the link cheers Mark. 👍
The Secret Labs is a very good chair. Had one years ago 👍
Interesting observations, Mark. I use a SecretLabs Titan chair. This was a replacement for a 30-year old executive swivel and tilt chair, that I formerly used in my office. Have to say, I really wanted a SecretLabs chair, but having made the (extortionate) investment, I'm disappointed that it isn't more comfortable (don't tell the wife, she hated me spending the best part of a very good weekend away on it!). I'd rate it 5.5/10, thought the almost worn-out chair it replaced was a good 7.5/10 even though the armrests were worn through. When I first got it, it was 9/10.
I've got the Secret Lab Titan as well. I found it to be a tad disappointing on its own. Once I got a softer cushion and some lumbar support it's great now.
@@tommy5285 Exactly my experience with my Titan.
And like all (most?) such chairs it lack one vital, in my view, feature, lockable castors. So Mark, what happens when you use rudder pedals? This lack of lockable castors really annoys me. There are office chair type castors which lock only when there is weight on them so you can move the chair in to position easily but it stays put when you sit in it. However I have yet to find anywhere to purchase them but I expect a manufacturer would be able to source them. I changed my castors for ones which lock by means of a little lever on the castor, problem is it is easy to catch the lever with your heel and lock the castor when you didn't intend to.
Agreed, the BS10 castors don’t lock, but due to weight if on carpet no problem, tested on tile floor and your point is totally valid.
Can you give any tips on positioning the rudder pedals? I find it really difficult to use them with a rolling chair.
Put the chair on a carpet or rug. Best solution.
Has anyone else failed to download Redhill Aerodrome from Burning blue??? I have tried a few times and can only get so far and then NOTHING!!!
If the download link doesn’t work right click on the link, select open incognito…it will download.
@@SimHangerFS Thanks Mark. I'll give is a go tomorrow.
@@SimHangerFS Nothing would work, in the end I got in touch with Burning Blue, and Mike came back to me. The problem was they were trying to use an old card of mine for payment even though my up to date card was in my account with them. I got into my account and deleted the old card and then tried again, this time it worked. Thanks for your help Mark.
My hobby now is to chase clarity and FPS
I believe once it will be sorted out it won't be as fun as now
I start to believe the Microsoft are doing that for the purpose of the update and spending more money 💰
I recently upgraded to the 3090 from 3070 from i7 to i9
And guess what I'm not that impressed with a Wooow impression 😃
At least I became pc expert in less than a month 😅
I use a slim lazy boy with massager built in.
Multitasking! 🤣
To bad it doesn't fit in a sim cockpit.🤣🤣
About 15 grand so far in the last 15 months... Not sure if the wife knows that but if she does I'm sure she's not happy!
🤣
@@SimHangerFS Well you think it's funny but I have to deal with her...lol😉
I’m genuinely interested in what you got for £15k? 🤔
@@stephenmckinnell7791 The system, peripherals, chair, plates, arms, wiring, an electrician, 3 tablets, a very expensive TV, lumber, sheet metal, and $4,000 in add-ons from Marketplace. Plus all the Dozens of little things that you don't see like taking a certain item, say my flight stick, to a electronic store and having 4' of cord added on to it at $400 because there's like 18 connector points. It's taken about a year to build and it takes up an entire room in the house and $15,000 is actually pretty cheap because I've seen people spend 50 and a 100 grand.
Thanks for that. Yep, I’m spending pounds and if you actually took every pound into account the amount would no doubt be surprising. I’m trying to be more discerning and not buying stuff that I don’t use or becomes quickly redundant. I guess it’s easy to get carried away if money were no object.
