Volo is how you do a twist villain right. At first, you're thinking "Ooo, it's a friendly merchant!" But as the game goes on, he gets steadily creepier and creepier, while popping up EVERYWHERE. Then BOOM, twist time! I would assume Volo is what Lusamine, Lysandre, and Rose were supposed to be; twist villains. But Lusamine gave off psycho bitch vibes from the get-go, Lysandre was Cyrus done worse and looked like an edgelord, and Rose was an eco-terrorist who gave off creeper vibes as well. Volo is the only one that wasn't instantly obvious that they were the main antagonist.
Lysandre never tried to be a twist vilain to be fair. Rose maybe is, but I don't see "how" it could be a twist. Lusamine is a twist vilain for sure, but it was wayyy too obious
Lusamine wasn’t a twist villain, but her relationship with Her children and the influence of Nihilego were things I was glad to see unfold as I played the game. That’s the “twist” in a sense.
>EVERYWHERE That's my problem with Cynthia. She's *EVERYWHERE.* Appeared in countless games following her debut, she has *TWO* ancestors and she has more screentime than other Champion in the anime. I hate it. Where's the love for the other Champions, huh?
Props to Game Freak for actually making Volo an interesting villain. I'm pretty sure everyone, at least in the back of their minds, expected Cylenne to be the villain. The concept of the ancestors worked really well for that purpose, as we naturally associate Volo with Cynthia, and think that he can't be a villain. However, in the end, not only is the twist believable, it's also hinted at the entire game as Volo always shows up after the player has collected some plates. It's just amazing how both Volo and Chairman Rose were made by the same company
Most likely there is a new or different writer for legends of arceus. The Quality of Badassness, and the first good written Villian, since Giovanni & N is too good. But the Quality, design, and Especially ideas are for the first Time that nice, that I'm again interested in Pokemon since several years, and From style, dialouge, and Characters it's in my Opinion the best Pokemon. Nevertheless, there is a lot of Potential for much more Content, and more life for the world. Also, more Dungeons! Look foward DLCs or better A second part!
But Chairman Rose isn’t evil. He’s so hellbent on preserving Galar before a disaster literally thousands of years into the future that he made really stupid choices to ensure it. Yeah they were bad things but his intentions were genuine
@@clemcediddlehopper6806 you could apply that to almost any vilian then cyrus and or Lysander were trying to ensure the safety of pokemon those were good intentions but they were executed poorly
@@whereisurdad1162 But to be fair for Rose, Lysandere went through with Genocide, Rose was a dumbass that turned himself in. But I agree, him being a dumbass with choices does not make him any less a villain
That and it also shows how devoted he is to getting the chance to meet Arceus. Even the role he picked to cover his true intentions the merchant has the color scheme of Arceus.
In the present day (Pokemon Diamond \ Pearl) no one knows about Arceus, Giratina, or the rest of the myths. I think that Volo, full of resentment for not having received the blessing of Arceus, has covered up any testimony of the Alpha pokemon so that in the present no one knows of his existence.
Well the research is available(might, I don't play attention to lore or story), the characters in the game might be plainly interested in other things or Volo ripped off every piece of evidence. If that were to be the case, why?
I think it just over time evolved as a myth. I mean that's still part of their religion/mythology (there's a church-like building in one of the cities in BDSP) It's just that there's not much evidence of Arceus's and Giratina's existance and many people could just have forgot/not believed the myths untill they saw the sky glitching and later their newest champion was casually running around the region with Giratina. Cogita said that she was just told about the trials with lake trio but didn't knew if it was true or not.
That was definitely suspicious, and then the cherry on top was the mask slip when he starts laughing at the Giratina statue. That right there should have told everyone that he was evil
There probably is some meta meaning to Volo teaching the player the “Secret Back Strike” technique for catching Pokémon, given how the story arc develops subsequently ….
All Battles 1:00 VS Ginkgo Guild Member Volo #1 6:00 VS Ginkgo Guild Member Volo #2 39:44 VS Pokemon Wielder Volo 45:00 VS Altered Forme Giratina 46:20 VS Origin Forme Giratina
One of the things I never liked about Pokémon is how they write and design villains. They make them so obvious to identify o so plain, you rarely get the chance to simpathize with them (Guzma was the first exception of this rule). Even when they tried their best to hide Chairman Rose was the main villain, everyone knew it even before the game was released. But Volo, he totally fooled me in my first run. I legit thought Kamado would be the main villain, but I never suspected of Volo at any time. And the fact the game forshadowed some things about the final battle and his true face (the backstab technique, how he scares us from behind, probably referencing he was holding the Spooky Plate all along, how he was so persist about the Plates, etc) and never noticed at any time, when the twist happened, it took me off guard. Plus, both battles had me scared for the first time ever playing Pokémon. I never had felt fear while playing Pokémon until the game told me I had to fight Volo and THEN Giratina TWICE in a row. With no healing pause whatsoever. GameFreak did right their homework designing Volo. The first villain I genuinely love, even over Guzma.
*sees Volo Me: “No! Please! Have mercy!” Volo: *Visibly confused “…What?” Me: “…Wait.” *Looks closer to see that it’s not Cynthia Me: “Sorry. I thought you were someone else.” Volo: *Still visibly confused
I just love the fact he was always giving us items and teaching us things (which implies that he had more experience than the player). I think deep down, he had a good side.
I want to believe this so badly, but I really think it was because he wanted us to be successful in collecting the plates for him :( So that he could take them all in one fell swoop without any suspicion.
Oh Volo absolutely had a good side. He was definitely planning to backstab us from the beginning, which he says himself. However, he has a Togekiss, which he wouldn't have been able to evolve if he was a bad person. I think there was more depth to him than just trying to destroy the world.
I think he very misunderstood in the community. What droves Volo like this was when he discovered Arceus identity. He was doing everything he could in order to meet with Arceus, he also felt entitled to it due to the fact being part of Ancient Sinnoh Bloodline. If you watch the scene after you beat him, he mentioned all he wanted to was to meet with Arceus, he also failed to realize that Arceus did answer him by sending the Player to stop him. He also mentioned that his journey with the whole rift started when Giratina gave him the plate. It seems Giratina had a play on this and took advantage of Volo desire to meet with Arceus. It was a win-win because Giratina would get his fight and Volo meet up with Arceus. However the plan didn’t worked and it seems Volo theorize that in order to meet up with Arceus he would need all the plates, which some of them he was unable to get. Of course non of these means he’s bad towards Pokemon, in the end he even realize that Player have its Pokemon on its side while he is alone, another thing he failed to realize that he was never alone due to Togekiss. I like to think that Volo is too much into ruins secrets and knowledge that is unable to realize the little things which is common for people who knows a lot.
I like the implication of Gible and Togepi being recent additions to his team, he's just casually training them as he follows you through your journey.
Maybe a opposite of N in terms of their paths, and Volo don't really like much of a rival, but a mysterious character who appears from behind like Cynthia.
Volo did have the goals similar to Cyrus though (wanting to create a new world, attempting to use the legendary Giratina to remove all life, etc). At least they made his battle more powerful than when battling Cyrus.
I have concerns about Volo’s look at the end. He has a face that says, “I will strangle the first thing I come across with my bare hands, but I don’t want Arceus to see me.”
Players were joking for years how Cynthia is evil for "murdering Pokemon" and destroying Nuzlockes - that she's pure demon And GameFreak turned this joke into reality _(sort of)_
Some people think this reveal is cheesy and such but if you think about it, 1. How does he know all about hisui’s history (he makes this thing up that other merchants told him by I doubt it) 2. He’s the very first Pokémon Wielder we fought (I think) 3. He constantly shows up basically reminding you “yes this character exists and he’s really important” he kinda stalks you 4. He was this important because they want make a big twist Tbh the twist is really good cuz I wasn’t expecting him to be the main villain and Cynthia’s ancestor cuz the theme gives it away. Overall this game is an absolute 50/10
I knew that you would probably fight this guy as a post-game super boss, but was not expecting him to go full on anime villain. Good to know GameFreak’s doing a better job at making twist villains.
@@HyperSonicXtreme Well no matter in they ever make remakes of sword and shield one day hopefully Rose could be improved but overall he wasn’t THAT bad.
If you don't press anything on this line at 39:45, the intro to Volo's theme plays and then it goes silent (except for the ambiental sfx). The actual theme will only start playing alongside his pokeball throwing animation (or when the battle starts, I don't remember). I thought that was pretty cool.
Such a shame we didn't get more backstory and further development after he went completely insane. Hoping we get a DLC set around the Northern island that hosts in battle frontier in DPPt with him as the main villain with his own clan and the expedition team set out to stop his cult from succeeding
@@YupYupTRP What you're asking is "The God Problem", which is a question monotheism has grappled with since the beginning. Many polytheistic religions didn't have that problem because the gods were capricious and didn't care. But if your chief deity is the *only* deity, and thus cares enough about creation to make it at all, then you have to answer the question "Why not take every direct action to protect it?" The answer I've seen most often arrived at is, "Because it would stop that creation from being independent." I can't speak for the developers, but from my interpretation, that's Arceus' justification. He gives the player a task which will put them on the path to encountering Volo, and given that it's likely they are Lucas/Dawn sent into the past after dealing with Cyrus, Arceus knows they will want to stop Volo.
personally didn’t find him creepy given how pokemon games have you “coincidentally” running into people all the time. He was giving me Waka from Okami vibes. Since I'm a little late to the party and pretty much everything else I would've said has already been discussed by other people, I'm just gonna add that Volo's speech patterns (pre-reveal at least) are absolutely adorable to me. That's all.
I was not expecting volo to be evil at all, he seemed like a really nice guy in the beginning and I was thinking for the plate collecting that he would just want to learn about the region peacefully
When he stalked you throughout the game, I thought, “oh so are we just getting a repeat of Cynthia’s nonsense?” I thought he would have simply been a superboss and it would have simply been that, but turns out he was the villain all along.
Something I realised, Volo using giratina to drive dialga and palkia mad so that Arceus would be drawn out is very similar to how Zinnia manipulated Team Magma and Aqua to unleash Groudon and Kyogre in order to draw out Rayquaza.
Let's see here: First fight, hey I just got this level five baby that knows one move, tackle. Second fight, baby's still a baby but I also got this rare tiny land shark. Third fight, I have obtained a full team of 6 Pokémon, all perfectly setup to create one of the hardest battles in Pokémon history, with a majority of my team echoing everyones childhood nightmare. Wait you beat all 6 of my Pokémon? Guess I must concede... Actually you know what! Screw it! I'll just use even MORE Pokémon!

Something tells me that this won't be the last time we'll see Volo. I think time moves differently in the distorsion world, so maybe him saying that he'll spend centuries looking for a way to get Arceus' power is not that crazy if you think about it.
Volo gave such Harley vibes from Pokémon Advanced. Always being super nice saying you’re friends and that you’re an amazing trainer, but really only trying to get something out of you or see you fail.
I think at some point cogita and volo had children and their children adopted cogita style and personality while also adopting volo intense battle style and love for mythology (replicating the same Pokémon teams )?
When volo says. It’s almost like the sky spat you up to get in my way makes me think arceus knew of Volos plan so he took you to beat him as your the only one who could
That was me when i meet him for the first time..... until the postgame fight when he pulls out some frickin PTSD that scares the sh*t out of me lol (just like what cynthia did to me in the DP games)
I remember i started to feel something really strange when i met him before Basculegion's captain. I was like... "There's no ruins here... Are you stalking me or something?" Then my doubts disappeared when the chapter of Dialga and Palkia arrived. Finally, when i saw the plotwist, i literally froze myself for four/five seconds, then my heart started beating stronger because of fear while my brain was shouting something like "I WAS RIGHT!! SEE?!?! I WAS RIGHT!!!"
Apparently, Volo was playing god all along. Just like Ghetsis, he was a god wantabe right from the start. His polite behavior was nothing but sarcasm as he wanted to achieve godhood by summoning Archeus to the player but ended up with Giratina instead. And also, he used the player as a tool to summon Arceus but never got it.
There’s a slight detail with Shadow Force that I really love, in its Altered Forme, it shatters a hole in reality then attack, however, in its Origin Forme, it tears a hole in reality
It's surprising how many people thought he was evil from the start, like it was obvious he was smarter than he was letting on (he is based on Cynthia after all), I just figured he was supposed to be like Sans or Zacharie.
I am so salty that Volo might not get a redemption arc, so salty i pulled up an entire google doc to plan out for him to be a morally grey character. Because Volo damn needs it.

Lusamine was never supposed to be a surprise, literally the first cutscene of the game is Team Aether chasing Lillie with an angry look lol
@@janecklyn I always assumed Lusamine didn't know her staff was bad
Lusamine wasn’t a twist villain, but her relationship with Her children and the influence of Nihilego were things I was glad to see unfold as I played the game. That’s the “twist” in a sense.
>EVERYWHERE
That's my problem with Cynthia.
But I agree, him being a dumbass with choices does not make him any less a villain
i like how his clothing is based of arceus in the final fight, showing how truely devoted he is to being the god of the new world
That and it also shows how devoted he is to getting the chance to meet Arceus.
If that were to be the case, why?
also volo describes the temple of sinnoh's pillars as spears cutting into the heavens, or similar iirc
I think it just over time evolved as a myth. I mean that's still part of their religion/mythology (there's a church-like building in one of the cities in BDSP)
It's just that there's not much evidence of Arceus's and Giratina's existance and many people could just have forgot/not believed the myths untill they saw the sky glitching and later their newest champion was casually running around the region with Giratina.
Cogita said that she was just told about the trials with lake trio but didn't knew if it was true or not.
Bella sta teoria fratm
When he dodges Cogita's comment about him speaking as if he isn't a Member of the Ginko guild that def. should be a red flag
I interpreted it as that he was the Boss or something else but I agree, that brought a red flag that we all ignored

Are you aware N exists? (He’s not really evil though but still a well written antagonist character)

When I encountered Volo at Mt. Coronet and heard the music, and SAW HIS TEAM, I was like:
"God dang it not again."
@@gillianisprobablycrying5784 Well it couldn’t evolve if he was a completely terrible person anyway.
@@gillianisprobablycrying5784 yes but counterpoint to the togekiss if I remember correctly Cyrus has a crobat and he is a pure evil villan
I like the implication of Gible and Togepi being recent additions to his team, he's just casually training them as he follows you through your journey.

Maybe a opposite of N in terms of their paths, and Volo don't really like much of a rival, but a mysterious character who appears from behind like Cynthia.

And gastrodon with togekiss like the 2nd Cynthia rematch
She doesn't use Gastrodon in Platinum.
Players were joking for years how Cynthia is evil for "murdering Pokemon" and destroying Nuzlockes - that she's pure demon
And GameFreak turned this joke into reality _(sort of)_
Some people think this reveal is cheesy and such but if you think about it,
1. How does he know all about hisui’s history (he makes this thing up that other merchants told him by I doubt it)
2. He’s the very first Pokémon Wielder we fought (I think)
3. He constantly shows up basically reminding you “yes this character exists and he’s really important”
he kinda stalks you
4. He was this important because they want make a big twist
Tbh the twist is really good cuz I wasn’t expecting him to be the main villain and Cynthia’s ancestor cuz the theme gives it away.
Overall this game is an absolute 50/10

I can't speak for the developers, but from my interpretation, that's Arceus' justification.
