  • This is my own 2004 Tahoe Z71 with rear heat/ac with a broken heater house quick connect fitting repair. I could not find any decent videos with part numbers so posting my own after some trial and error.
Was driving down the highway and my truck started beeping warning code at me saying overheating…. Look down and see the gauge temp pegged at max! Instantly put in neutral and turned off motor and coasted to the side of the highway! Didn’t take long to see dry overflow container and a wet spray all over the rear quarter panel where rear heater setup is at! The plastic quick connect fitting strikes again! Broke right off near the crimp connection! A long walk down the interstate to target to get some distilled water, I bought 3 but only used two. Still heavy enough with a long walk back! :( but I was close enough to home to make it back without overheating again.
And this is how I repaired it. Hardest part was finding a store that had the quick connect fitting 3/4 to 5/8 barb elbow 90 degrees fitting! Luckily advance auto parts had one in stock that I picked up next day and quickly fixed it! Getting the old fitting off was the hardest part! I ended up breaking the end tabs off and using pliers to turn the fitting back and forth to get the fitting off the tube. Be careful cause you don’t wanna damage the tubing! I cut the hose back past a area that looked swollen to me, then slapped the new fitting on and installed the barb coupler and a new short piece of 5/8 hose and clamped it all tight. Very happy to fix it right and decently cheap enough. And now got rear heat working again. I could have cut both lines and bypassed the rear heater core or replaced the front quick connection fittings with a truck pair of fittings to delete the rear hose setup but I wanted rear heat! So why not fix it right!
    Check videos for part numbers.
I will be buying these same parts again and replacing the other coupler soon as well. If one broke it’s probably almost time for the other one to break. So if your doing this repair and your local store has two of these fittings 800-419 then buy a pair and replace both the same time. I only found one fitting locally so I had to just do the one for now. :( hope it doesn’t blow or I’ll be replacing all the radiator fluid again! :( I had zero warning of this failure! Never seen any puddles or smoke out the back… just normal cruising down the highway and blam the Tahoe was screaming at me that there was a problem! Luckily the truck has a warning system inplace! Or I could have easily destroyed my motor!!!! One good thing GM did on these trucks I guess lol
