Dear Erin, I really need some help. My good family friends/ neighbors had gotten two rabbits for their 4th grader. At first this little girl whined because she wanted a hamster like me. The day after she whined about it and was told no and cried, they said she could have a rabbit. When she told me I tried to discourage her from owning one. I explained that they had long life spans, needed more time than a dog, and have a lot of special care. She got two anyways. For the first few weeks they were kept a in a tiny cage about the size of my hamsters cage. It was a about 2 and half feet in length. And I kept suggesting C&C cages to them because of how cheap they and large you could make them. They spent a lot of money to make a slightly larger hutch. Which is about 3 ft in length. I visit the bunnies once a week and I think that's the only time the cage is every cleaned. And I clean it. Their tiny litter box has a pile of feces and feces are all over their hay and in the food bowl. When I walk in the room I sit down and clean immediately. Their son who has a room right next to the rabbits plays the drums incredibly loud. I was in there just cleaning out the rabbits cage when he began to play. The rabbits were petrified and ran into their little house and I tried to comfort them the best I could with gentle comforting pets and a whisper quiet voice. I gave them treats and some hay to munch on to help minimize the stress. Not to mention the noise when the family is in the room. The son is incredibly loud, he speaks loudly, throws items around the room, and strums the guitar loudly. It evens hurts my ears. Both of the children also pick up the rabbits harshly with one hand under part of their stomach. Just today when I was there the son picked up one of the bunnies and of course the bunny began to kick and he tossed it onto the bed. I spoke to him quite harshly about it and blamed it on her kicking. Their diet is also very poor. They are 4 months old and are on a crappy muesli mix and TIMOTHY HAY. They get 1 1/2 cup of veggies to share once a day. And that's it. They have not been taken to a vet yet though I have told them every time i see them that you must get rabbits to a vet just like a cat or dog. And the never do. Thank you for reading this. I am just looking for any suggestions on what I could do. I've already calculated taking the rabbits in and i could afford it. But i don't know what my others options could be. Quinn Warrens if you can't change the problem completely try to help her out with the care, say you'll help clean cages, bring her hay and stuff, tell her that they have similar need requirements to a horse
The wierdest thing one of my pets have done is... well this morning my female syrian hamster "coda" WAS INSIDE HER WATER BOTTLE yes inside a little water bottle XD she managed to chew a hole at the bottom and climb on in lol luckily it was at the bottom so the water spilled out so she didnt drown but when i pick up the water bottle it was hot idk how long she was stuck for but luckily i saw it before i left for school. I cut her out of the water bottle with my moms help and i dried her off and checked for injuries and since i do not have a water bottle cover i had to put a little dish of water in her cage lol
Hello fellow rat parent! I love ratties too. They just soooo.... freakishly adorable! Mine are currently sleeping in their little hammocks (that they do not eat thank god). I just love these little guys so much, I would do anything for them. Yay ratties!
talking about dropping hamsters made me remember this one time I brought my hamster for show and tell and I let this kid hold her. Unforotunately, she decided that she'd have a toilet break at that very moment and the kid literally flung her across the room, the poor thing. Thankfully when I rushed over to the table she landed on, she seemed just fine but god that was a horrible experience.
My worst pet moment is when I didn't clean the hamster cage enough. I feel really guilty for it. My hamster has already passed, and I wish I could go back and treat her so great. 😭

Heyyyyyy Erin I was wondering if you could do a video about the benefits of a raw diet/ canned food as opposed to dry food for cats? My cat has a lot of issues right now and I think she could benefit by having a wet diet. I've looked at 4 brands that I can just find at Petsmart compared to Poof's food right now, and they are all LOADS better than chicken by-product meal. I need help convincing my parents that this would be good for her and why her current food is bad for her. Thanks!
Here's the thing with dry cat food; cats naturally get more water from what they eat rather than what they drink. Dry cat food has no liquids in it, so your cat can get dehydrated. Dry cat food can also cause cats to get a UTI (urinary tract infection) or urine crystals which makes it hard for cats to go potty. Lastly dry foods are like potato chips/crisps. You eat a bag as a snack, you're fine for a while, fifteen minutes later you're hungry again and you got no nutrition out of it. Dry foods don't fill the cats stomach and also don't put anything healthy into the cats body. So raw/canned food is the better option for cats. I suggest finding a few pages online that support this, and also confirm this information with your vet so your parents get the picture. :)
I did a ton of research on cat food, and ultimately chose to feed Instinct wet food, and Orijen dry food. Both are really good quality foods. We feed our cat some dry food, simply because he refuses to eat enough of the wet food, and was becoming too skinny.
Cats are obligate carnivores meaning their diet should only consist of animal products which is impossible in a dry food because it needs a grain or vegetable to hold it together also cats naturally don't drink a lot of water so they're supposed to get most of their liquid from their food so when they're on dry food they're constantly dehydrated so I'm glad you want to switch your cat to wet a good way of trying to convince your parents that this is a good idea (along with what I just told you) is talking to them (respectfully) about how when cats are on low-quality diets they have major health problems (which causes high vet bills) later on and end up having a much shorter lifespan not to mention having to practically force-feed them a special diet if it comes down to that (which is another reason you don't want to feed low-quality food) I recommend doing as much research about this subject as possible and putting together a presentation of all the facts and benefits (respectfully) for your parents hope this helps!

once i dropped my hamster and she landed belly on the ground, and legs spread apart, she looked exactly like a flying squirrel in the air and i was sooo freaked out that she break a pone or had some tupe of injury. but i dont think so because she was doing fine and got up i couple seconds later and started running around like usual. also i had a rug so i think that mightve made it a little better

Erin, I'm getting two rabbits for my birthday (November!) and my mum said they have to be outdoor rabbits. I only ever hear about indoor cages, are outdoor cages bad? Then my dad said we could have a blue stuffy pup for Christmas if we are good, when I said I wanted dwarf hamsters, roboroski ones as well, and I believe that if we do get a pup it will kill my rabbits or traumatise them.
One time I was carrying my hamster down the stairs. I was going very slowly, but I still tripped, and I rolled my ankle. everyone asked me if I was ok and I ignored them and went straight for my hamster. she was perfectly fine though 😊💘

Someone please help💔😿 So yesterday I was checking on my precious little hammy and I noticed that his back was all hunched up and he was standing still when I touched him it's like he sprung to life but his back is still hunched when he walks, also he's been acting very very aggressive lately, when I try to take him out to play he bites through the garden gloves really hard and ends up piercing holes in the glove, when I offered him water he drank it. He eating and drinking fine he's doing ok but I'm still concerned. Here are the symptoms he has 1.He lost weight😿😿💔💔 2.Very very aggressive 3.back hunched up I really don't know what to do someone help me!! Is he about to hibernate, is he constipated, does he have a tumour? Is he sick? Should I take him to the vet? Help is really appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻💔😿😔
UmbreonXSlyveon hes passed away on January the 29th he wasn't sick he got better after the incident but he died of old age he was about a yr and 1 month when he passed I have a new hamster now
I love rats. I took care of them in my Biology department (breaks my heart seeing them in tiny cages). They are so sweet, never bit, and baby rats...oh my god..baby rats. I would just pocket them if I could!

You and Bertie, is like me and my dog Snoopy. I'll be petting both of them, and then I'll slowly inch Snoopy towards me so he can sit on my lap, and my other dog just stares at me, and I always respond "Dexter, you're my favorite 90lb dog, but Snoopy's my favorite under 90 lb dog, so like it's all even, no need to worry. Like I never give Snoopy longer walks, no I never give Snoopy extra treats, and the only reason Snoopy has more toys is because he doesn't swallow squeakers (even though Dexter only did it when his Epilepsy was real bad, and he took medication, but it made him especially hungry)" And dexter always stares at me like "yah right human" then he walks away:( I feel bad lol!

You can put it in, but not necessarily as bedding. Hamsters are most likely to eat it so you can just add it in a small corner the cage for them (hay is good for them since it has a lot of fibres).
I got my hamster today and so far he has just hidden behind his wheel in the corner. At the moment he is just staring? Is that normal? I'm worried we've scared him too much?
okay so i have a question, i plan on getting a hamster soon but, i sleep with a strong fan and cant sleep witout it & the only room i could even think about keeping a hamster is my room. would fan make a hamster cold? would it bother my future baby? i have asked some websites but they have yet to respond please help me. like so she can see
If there is a draft in your room because of the fan, it can hurt your hamster. It might help if you use a aquarium. The glass would stop the draft, but I am not sure.
Are hamster people just overprotective, or are they really that sensitive? I had a hamster when I was pretty young, so I don't remember the details too well. But I've had rabbits and rats fairly recently, and I would never have been worried about dropping them. Especially my rats: One time one of them didn't want to waste time on climbing down the ladder, so she just jumped straight down from my 2.5 meter tall (higher than my door) bunk bed. Then she just kept walking like nothing happened.
Hamsters are more sensitive to being dropped than animals like rats, they aren't good at landing and are more prone to breaking their spine if they land incorrectly. Rats are much more flexible and better coordinated which makes jumping less risky :)

Hi Erin, it's an emergency!! I need your advice. I have two Russians who are sisters, they are two months old and I've had them for 20 days. They suddenly seem to be loosing hair at the back and behind their ears. I'm really concerned and there are no vets for Hamsters in the region that I live, and the bedding i use is carefresh ( I know for the fact they it's safe). They eat and drink well. But I'm concerned about the hair loss. Please please do reply, thanks in advance :) Ps . ErinsAnimals Hi Erin I managed to take them to a Vet. He claimed that the hair loss is due deficiencies and prescribed a multivitamin drops. He also said that there are no flees and mites. Is it true ? Can there be hair loss due vitamin deficiency ?

I got my hamster out for a taming session today .I put it in a small bin but not too small .I put a wheel in and a place to hide.When I put Muchi my hamster in the bin he started panicking and tried to escape.I wanted to lift the bin up and but him back in the cage but the bin wasn't too tall so I was afraid my hamster would jump out.My mom helped me put him back in.Hes safe but will he hate me now or be really scared of me?I got him a week ago.Please reply I'm worried

Hey Erin..A couple of weeks ago I rescued a male hamster.It looks just like a roborovski,it has white eyebrows and big ears (bigger than my Campbells Russian female) but is does has a dark grey dorsol stripe..is it possible for it to be a roborovski hybrid?
No that's biologically impossible, it's most likely a campbells since they have a very wide range of colour variations. If you want you can tweet a photo of it to me and I will try to confirm the species :)
Vilja Samuelsen I don't know about the fish sand but children's play sand and chinchilla sand is safe. I wouldn't use the stones in case your hamster eats them and they can't really burrow in it like in bedding. Just my opinion😊

Also you can try to make some money to pay for the food doing extra chores neighborhood dog walking etc.

Someone please help💔😿 So yesterday I was checking on my precious little hammy and I noticed that his back was all hunched up and he was standing still when I touched him it's like he sprung to life but his back is still hunched when he walks, also he's been acting very very aggressive lately, when I try to take him out to play he bites through the garden gloves really hard and ends up piercing holes in the glove, when I offered him water he drank it. He eating and drinking fine he's doing ok but I'm still concerned. Here are the symptoms he has
1.He lost weight😿😿💔💔
2.Very very aggressive
3.back hunched up
I really don't know what to do someone help me!! Is he about to hibernate, is he constipated, does he have a tumour? Is he sick? Should I take him to the vet? Help is really appreciated 🙏🏻🙏🏻💔😿😔

UmbreonXSlyveon hes passed away on January the 29th he wasn't sick he got better after the incident but he died of old age he was about a yr and 1 month when he passed I have a new hamster now

You and Bertie, is like me and my dog Snoopy. I'll be petting both of them, and then I'll slowly inch Snoopy towards me so he can sit on my lap, and my other dog just stares at me, and I always respond "Dexter, you're my favorite 90lb dog, but Snoopy's my favorite under 90 lb dog, so like it's all even, no need to worry. Like I never give Snoopy longer walks, no I never give Snoopy extra treats, and the only reason Snoopy has more toys is because he doesn't swallow squeakers (even though Dexter only did it when his Epilepsy was real bad, and he took medication, but it made him especially hungry)" And dexter always stares at me like "yah right human" then he walks away:( I feel bad lol!

You can put it in, but not necessarily as bedding. Hamsters are most likely to eat it so you can just add it in a small corner the cage for them (hay is good for them since it has a lot of fibres).

If there is a draft in your room because of the fan, it can hurt your hamster. It might help if you use a aquarium. The glass would stop the draft, but I am not sure.
Are hamster people just overprotective, or are they really that sensitive? I had a hamster when I was pretty young, so I don't remember the details too well. But I've had rabbits and rats fairly recently, and I would never have been worried about dropping them. Especially my rats: One time one of them didn't want to waste time on climbing down the ladder, so she just jumped straight down from my 2.5 meter tall (higher than my door) bunk bed. Then she just kept walking like nothing happened.
Hamsters are more sensitive to being dropped than animals like rats, they aren't good at landing and are more prone to breaking their spine if they land incorrectly. Rats are much more flexible and better coordinated which makes jumping less risky :)

I have a leopard gecko and i wanted to do a matching themed hamster cage to his. They have some really nice rock looking ladies and they are normally pretty large.
The reptile hide out should be fine for yours. As long as you clean it before/after the animal is done using it. Hope this helps :)

I have two Russians who are sisters, they are two months old and I've had them for 20 days. They suddenly seem to be loosing hair at the back and behind their ears. I'm really concerned and there are no vets for Hamsters in the region that I live, and the bedding i use is carefresh ( I know for the fact they it's safe). They eat and drink well.
But I'm concerned about the hair loss. Please please do reply, thanks in advance :)

I got my hamster out for a taming session today .I put it in a small bin but not too small .I put a wheel in and a place to hide.When I put Muchi my hamster in the bin he started panicking and tried to escape.I wanted to lift the bin up and but him back in the cage but the bin wasn't too tall so I was afraid my hamster would jump out.My mom helped me put him back in.Hes safe but will he hate me now or be really scared of me?I got him a week ago.Please reply I'm worried
I would just start out slow. Maybe try feeding him and let him get comfortable in your hands. My hamster did that also. Hope this helps :)

Hey Erin..A couple of weeks ago I rescued a male hamster.It looks just like a roborovski,it has white eyebrows and big ears (bigger than my Campbells Russian female) but is does has a dark grey dorsol stripe..is it possible for it to be a roborovski hybrid?
No that's biologically impossible, it's most likely a campbells since they have a very wide range of colour variations. If you want you can tweet a photo of it to me and I will try to confirm the species :)

Vilja Samuelsen I don't know about the fish sand but children's play sand and chinchilla sand is safe. I wouldn't use the stones in case your hamster eats them and they can't really burrow in it like in bedding. Just my opinion😊

My Syrian hamster is acting weird. her cage is definitely above the minimum size but I forget the exact measurements. She has plenty of toys, which I often swap, food water and a clean sandbox. One minute she'll be running on her wheel or climbing on her toys then she'll suddenly start to chew the bars, I have tried everything and she doesn't ever do it for long, but does anyone have any tips? I'm worried about her teeth.
