The best thing I've ever found on ao3 is the hunger games book from Peeta's POV. a girl literally took the time to rewrite ALL 3 books from his POV. It's so well done and accurate to the books that I basically consider it canon.

You can filter to EXCLUDE tags so if there's a fandom you want to search but a pairing or an ACT you'd rather not read, you can filter them out (assuming the writer used tags haha). getting accustomed to the layout did take me a while, but once i was used to it, it immediately became the only site i read fic on. their tag system is flawless! being able to tag your own bookmarks? life changing. excluding tags is so so awesome as well.

Poet Richard Siken has admitted to posting Sherlock and Supernatural fanfic on Ao3. There are professional writers on those streets. It's serious. 300,000 word series serious. I love it
The best way to use Ao3 is to just press search, edit search, and then you can type and edit any fandom/tag/preference that you want. You can find EXACTLY what you want to find as long as it exists. I usually start with the pairing - you type it into the “Relationships” spot - as long as there is a fanfiction for the pairing, the pairing will pop up when you search it. Usually goes by this format (using a random pairing): “Dean Winchester/Castiel” or the names will be flipped around. You can select the rating. I usually set mine to Mature or Explicit. Moving on. You can set TAGS. This is where it gets crazy. Here are some tags that exist: “Praise Kink” “Spencer Reid Whump” “Sexual Tension” “UNRESOLVED Sexual Tension” “Fluff” “Fluff and Angst” “Domestic Fluff” “Tooth-Rotting Fluff” - probably hundred more of tags that you can search up and apply to your search - however, more than 3 kind of specific tags, and you probably won’t find a fic. I’d say 2 or 3 tags can greatly narrow your search while still finding fics. You can also search Characters, Language, select whether they should be finished or unfinished works (or no preference), Authors, yada yada yada. The other great function that helps me a lot is the sorting function - you can do ascending or descending, and I find the best searches you can do are “Date Updated” descending or “Word Count” descending - “Date Posted” is probably also helpful, though I prefer “Date Updated”. “Date Updated” finds you the most recent fics - if you’re crazy like me and have consumed MANY works of a certain pairing - using this can help you find the most recent fics/new works and especially help you follow updating fics. I usually just look out for when a fanfiction/a certain title updates to the top again (as in the author updates it, it goes to the top of the fics each time it updates). If you haven’t read all the fics to a certain pairing and especially if you have A LOT of fics for the particular ship (yay! congrats!), then sorting it by Word Count descending can maybe help you find the length fic/what kind of fic you’re looking for. I find anything in the 1,000 to 9,000 word range can be a really good short or long form one-shot. Anything 50,000-200,00+ can be a good longer form fic. The fics between 9,000-50,000 are kind of a blend between this - usually good shorter-feeling multi-chapter fics. Anything shorter than 1,000 can be good but sometimes isn’t fulfilling or well written, and 250,000+… the author is either a God tier writer or they’re just someone who writes like shit and doesn’t know how to stop. If anyone read this who wants to use Ao3 but has trouble understanding its layout, let me say - I hope this helps. In my not so humble opinion, Ao3 is far superior to Wattpad or tumblr for fan fiction. I only hope this may guide you to finding the fic you’ve been craving DEEP in your soul.

For example, I'm such a big DC fan, and I like different areas of DC like Batfam, Constantine, League of Assassins. I can't find something like that on any other website.

All in the same place! AO3 really living up to the Archive part of its name there (Also fic has always been the domain of married women - those zines in the 70s were written by housewives who were BREAKING THE LAW writing about queer men having sex! Married, middle-aged and older women are the BACKBONE of any fandom that has any kind of longevity.)

I’m an old and I’ve been around since before AO3. I spent most of my time on Library of Moria 😄 Or livejournal. I love how old school AO3 is. It lets you find just what you need, no fuss. The smut warning is hilarious. Yes please, that’s what I’m here for, please and thank you. Some of the fics on there have literally pulled me out of depression. I hang out in the Stranger Things fandom and damn, there is some excellent and complex stuff to be found. There’s also no kink that hasn’t been explored with Steve at the center of it. None 😂

Middle aged, married and can confirm I LOVE Ao3 - the search function is incredible, you are very wrong Madame President, I'm sorry. You can filter to EXCLUDE tags so if there's a fandom you want to search but a pairing or an ACT you'd rather not read, you can filter them out (assuming the writer used tags haha). If it aint broken don't fix it 😶🌫️

The best way to use Ao3 is to just press search, edit search, and then you can type and edit any fandom/tag/preference that you want. You can find EXACTLY what you want to find as long as it exists.
I usually start with the pairing - you type it into the “Relationships” spot - as long as there is a fanfiction for the pairing, the pairing will pop up when you search it. Usually goes by this format (using a random pairing): “Dean Winchester/Castiel” or the names will be flipped around.
You can select the rating. I usually set mine to Mature or Explicit. Moving on.
You can set TAGS. This is where it gets crazy. Here are some tags that exist:
“Praise Kink” “Spencer Reid Whump” “Sexual Tension” “UNRESOLVED Sexual Tension” “Fluff” “Fluff and Angst” “Domestic Fluff” “Tooth-Rotting Fluff” - probably hundred more of tags that you can search up and apply to your search - however, more than 3 kind of specific tags, and you probably won’t find a fic. I’d say 2 or 3 tags can greatly narrow your search while still finding fics.
You can also search Characters, Language, select whether they should be finished or unfinished works (or no preference), Authors, yada yada yada.
The other great function that helps me a lot is the sorting function - you can do ascending or descending, and I find the best searches you can do are “Date Updated” descending or “Word Count” descending - “Date Posted” is probably also helpful, though I prefer “Date Updated”. “Date Updated” finds you the most recent fics - if you’re crazy like me and have consumed MANY works of a certain pairing - using this can help you find the most recent fics/new works and especially help you follow updating fics. I usually just look out for when a fanfiction/a certain title updates to the top again (as in the author updates it, it goes to the top of the fics each time it updates).
If you haven’t read all the fics to a certain pairing and especially if you have A LOT of fics for the particular ship (yay! congrats!), then sorting it by Word Count descending can maybe help you find the length fic/what kind of fic you’re looking for. I find anything in the 1,000 to 9,000 word range can be a really good short or long form one-shot. Anything 50,000-200,00+ can be a good longer form fic. The fics between 9,000-50,000 are kind of a blend between this - usually good shorter-feeling multi-chapter fics. Anything shorter than 1,000 can be good but sometimes isn’t fulfilling or well written, and 250,000+… the author is either a God tier writer or they’re just someone who writes like shit and doesn’t know how to stop.
If anyone read this who wants to use Ao3 but has trouble understanding its layout, let me say - I hope this helps. In my not so humble opinion, Ao3 is far superior to Wattpad or tumblr for fan fiction. I only hope this may guide you to finding the fic you’ve been craving DEEP in your soul.

I love AO3. Hanging out in the Trek fandom on there is wild - you have absolutely beautiful examinations of a 50 year old show published last week, right beside imported zine fic from the 70s! All in the same place! AO3 really living up to the Archive part of its name there
(Also fic has always been the domain of married women - those zines in the 70s were written by housewives who were BREAKING THE LAW writing about queer men having sex! Married, middle-aged and older women are the BACKBONE of any fandom that has any kind of longevity.)
