    My fear is that if I don't fight against or try and stop my intrusive fear thoughts they'll slip by me and manifest, where I'm frantically and desperately saying 'cancel' and try to replace it with a positive thought instead. This has been exhausting and tormenting for me and I feel twisted up inside.

    My OCD was good for 2 years straight life was good, everything was okay. Then bam last week I had a relapse. I honestly have no idea or no clue what to do or how to fix it. I forgot what used to help me, one thing I hate about OCD is that it tells me don't live don't do anything just think about these horrible thoughts.. thoughts and questions and images that I have no answer to at all. I live in a constant fear at the moment, It's extremely extremely sad because I thought I got so much better and I got over that part of my life and it was a phase but god here we go. I will be watching these videos to try and help myself I also got a session with a therapist. People who have OCD are the strongest people in the planet I tell you.

    This is phenomenal. When you hear it out loud, the intrusive thought sounds perfectly hilarious without the "What If". I actually laughed. But with the "what if" it becomes an immediate life and death question. Which points to the possibility that the power of OCD is precisely in the "what if", the intrusive questioning, and the doubt, rather than the specific thought itself. Secondly, using the past tense is preferable over the future tense is useful.
    Because the fear is the same, your brain agrees that you have dealt with the fear, but since it is in the past, you aren't bothered by it. For example, "what if I kill my hamster?" becomes "I killed my hamster" rather than "I will kill my hamster".
    I would call OCD "malicious self interrogation and self torture". I personally switch places with the interrogator thought process and try to be evil to myself, then the interrogator realises that he is hurting himself and stops the folly.

    Ocd has plagued me since i was a child and i cant thank you and others alike enough for this help. The amount of psychological horror this severe illness has put on me through the years in a close minded region had been incredibly damaging and disheartening to me at many stages of my life. And even with help i sometimes fear and dread the inevitable snap back into a spiral mindset , every second of the day obessising , acting on compulsions instinctively, ritualizing , with the most specific ridiculous irrational thoughts instilling an outrageous amount of fear stress and anxiety into my mind and body. I never talk about this type of thing but it is a major part of who i am and why i am the way i am, so ive gotten tired of hiding it. It doesnt make me me but it definitely is a vital aspect of the person that is shaped to be me at the present moment. I wanted to write this to see if anyone relates; a lot of people here seem to and thats always been comforting in a sense. I fuess what hurts the most is feeling like your destined to a lifetime of this , and feeling as if theres so much time wasted in a short lived life. At its worst, i would be stuck in a loop , walking around doing various compulsions and ticks , repeating phrases simultaneously, and mental ruminations and ritualizing constantly for five hours on end . It was so bad id sometimes get chaffed on my thighs. Its reassuring to hear more on erp and how to assess this. Thank you.

    Thank you so much for this and other OCD videos you've made. I've had intrusive thoughts my whole life that have taken many forms and only recently I realised I probably have OCD with how strongly I relate to the compulsions and giving the thoughts too much power. It feels good that I'm not alone and it feels good to know I don't have to give these thoughts power. I always thought I had to be disgusted by vulgar intrusive thoughts I've had in order to show I care, but turns out, I just need to ignore them. I also realized I've had moments before where I let the thoughts pass and remember how it felt stressful but yet made me feel good. The pain of acknowledging and ignoring them has discouraged me in the past to try ignoring them again. It may be a bit painful and stressful at first to go on ignoring these thoughts, but pain is the first step to healing. It's better than the explosive reactions that have become of my OCD. I'm going to commit starting today to change how I respond to intrusive thoughts. Thank you for these videos and God bless you. ❤

    The ‘snap I’m a sex offender’ comment 😅 honestly though, I think these videos are great and it’s so true the importance of just exposing yourself to these thoughts you fear and changing your perception of them, almost humouring them. Treating them as the meaningless thoughts they are. No matter how bad your thoughts are, the reason you fear them so much and strive to avoid them is because you’re a good person. And for that reason, you’re sane to be fearful and scared of such awful thoughts. Because you know that they don’t represent you. These aren’t thoughts reflecting you, therefore they don’t sit well with you. You’re not a bad person. You don’t need to fight them with compulsions because the outcome will be the same whether you do the compulsions or not. Only by doing them, you’ll have to keep repeating the process. But by avoiding them, you’ll be out through a period of doubt, worry and anxiety, but as you allow that, remind yourself ‘this feeling is normal when overcoming OCD’. The anxiety will soon calm down naturally and you’ll feel empowered by the evidence you have just experienced that ignoring a compulsion actually poses no risk. OCD is a monster, compulsions are it’s food. Starve the monster, don’t give in to its compulsion, it’ll get hangry and try to bully you to feed it. Make you anxious. But then it’ll tire out, and give up, and you’ll anxiety will fade. Repeat this process and the monster will starve to death. You’ll no longer have to feed it.
    Then monster wants food. It will manipulate you into thinking that it will help you if you feed it. But it’s plan is to get stronger and control you. That’s why when you don’t feed it and ignore a compulsion, it puts up a fight and makes it hard for you to resist. Keep resisting, because you’re strong than the monster and it’ll get so tired it will give up. I promise

    Dear doctor d'Ath
    Thank you very much for posting these informative videos. As someone who can struggle with ruminating over certain subjects these techniques sound like they can give a good handle on the situation.
    I do want to ask you, if that's okay, if the voice recording technique is also advisable when the toughts you have are self-deprecating. I'm a bit afraid of the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon and that I start to believe the toughts more than I do now. Should I try to rephrase those soundbites or just steer into them and try to take the sting out of them? Or not use the exposure techniques not at all?
    Thanks very much again for what you do.
    With kind regards

    This is so accurate. OCD is really a fear of thoughts. I grew up in an evangelical home and was afraid of ending up in hell. However, I realized that I am not afraid of hell IF everyone ends up there. Strange, right? Hell is hell. Why would I not be scared of ending up there if everyone is there too? Because it’s a fear of thought of hell. When I was young, being alone without my parents was scary but not if we are all together in the same place.

    What you do is awesome! That said, any chance you can address the audio issue? The volume output in the video is very low and echos. Maybe add an external microphone? That would help with the quality of your videos. The info you provide is great and it deserves greater production value. Love your work!

    OMG THESE ARE INCREDIBLY HELPFUL! MORE PURE O OCD TREATMENTS PLEASE! I noticed when I was listening to the recordings and started to feel a dopamine rush like OMG ha I'm going to kill my husband! I think it was me realizing the thoughts have no depth or weight when there's no "social stigma?" fear attached, i.e. "what if people hear this, and what would they think?" Life-changing. MORE IDEAS PLEASE and thank you so much!

    I'm so scared that if I make myself think more about the shameful horrible thoughts I'll end up wanting to actually do them instead of caring less about them. With anything if you want to make yourself like something you'd do it more so it feels more natural. How do I expose myself to awful thoughts without them becoming more natural to me and maybe carrying them out.

    The worst intrusive thoughts I have I would never write down, or record. If someone read them or heard the recording, they would think it was a confession to a horrid crime. At least if you record yourself saying "I'm afraid I might" then at least I wont have to worry someone will hear a recording of me saying strange scary things taken out of context. What if I'm dating someone and they find it on my phone. I do find your videos very helpful though. Thanks..

    Hi Katie. I really appreciate the videos that you make, I found them very informative. I am aslo struggling from OCD, but unfortunately can not change anything about it. Regarding recording your thoughts, what if I even scare of saying them out loud. What would you recommend in that case for me?

    • @23katied
      @23katied  Год назад

      Ultimately yes, but you might want to make a list of the thoughts that scare you and if some are less scary start with those - if they are all equally scary don't worry you can still do this. Try working through these videos before you get started so that you have all the info you need.

    I tried doing the recording erp for my intrusive thought and I gotta say it's slowly working.. and it's been only a week.. I noticed that it isn't as frequent as it used to be.. but it does pop into my head from time to time.. thank you Katie.. I love you..
    Earlier today it was almost as if I had forgotten about the thought cause i went for at least 30 minutes without any single thought and I know it's a process we just got to keep doing what we doing the thought doesn't give me anxiety anymore ..I expose myself to the thought Everytime I remember.. is this a good thing? Hope to get a reply

    Thank you for your practical, no-nonsense help, Katie. My question is about blasphemous thoughts or images. The issue here is that by doing ERP, one is consciously engaging in blasphemy. Please advise, thanks

    • @23katied
      @23katied  3 года назад +2

      Yes that's the case. The thing is rather than see them as 'blasphemous' see them as thoughts that come which the OCD knows will upset you and get your attention. You need to train yourself not to listen to the content. I would recommend recording your blasphemous thoughts and listening to them on loop. This way you will learn to habituate to them and then when they randomly pop into your head it will be much easier not to feel so disturbed by them or attach meaning to them.

    • @MC-ox6km
      @MC-ox6km 3 года назад

      @@23katied Thank you so much for your detailed response but I am sad to say that for me, in this particular case, it would be a step too far to make a tape as I feel that there would be some personal responsibility for initiating these thoughts - however diminished. Nevertheless may I take this opportunity to comment on the meaning that is ascribed to such thoughts. When troubled, a sufferer could choose to reflect on the aspect that they are so disturbing precisely because they run contrary to what is valued (i.e. "This is upsetting because it means so much to me" or "Only a person who really cared about this would be upset by this" - a positive spin) rather than a reflection associated with their content (i. e. "I must be a bad person for thinking these things" - negative spin).Through such positive associations to disturbing thoughts/images a sufferer could plot an escape from the vicious spiral of self destructive 'talk'. Rather than a constant thorn in the suffering, the pain can be a pointer/marker on the path to healing and wholeness if one can learn to attribute it as such.

    I used to have OCD where I'd run to my local fire station or call an ambulance anytime I had an anxiety attack. Even got to the point where I started to spend my days close to the hospital in Cafe shops etc. I was afraid of dying from a panic attack.
    I wonder if anyone else has done this 👍🏽.
    Is this behavior/ritual common with the clients you've helped. I'd be interested to know.
    It was awful. I decided to stop the compulsions and just accept death from panic. Guess what? Panic can never kill anyone. So I stopped the compulsions
