  • Julia Cook describes how her early childhood was like living in a real-life horror movie with obsessive-compulsive disorder, OCD. Cook tells the story of how she managed to overcome her biggest fears, why and how others should overcome theirs as well. Julia Cook, originally from Vermont, US, used to live in a horror movie. The fears, thoughts and temptations were many. They eventually became too many for her own health. Cook tells the story of how she managed to overcome these fears, why and how others should overcome theirs as well. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thanks for sharing about your experiences. People think OCD is all about washing hands, but what they don't know is that it tends to attack their value system and can make someone question and doubt anything. I appreciate you!

I don't struggle with contamination themes, but the bit at 2:20 about being scared of your life being "switched off" is so relatable. I'm so scared so often that some kind of catastrophe is on the way, and that any one thing could trigger it. It leads me to being a bit agoraphobic, feeling like I can't go anywhere or do anything because of the fear. It's stressful, but I'm doing my best to manage it. OCD is nothing like what the average person would think.

So sorry about what you're going through. One thing I can say is, please take it ONE DAY AT A TIME. You are not those thoughts you're having, you're stronger than those obsessions or compulsions, and just one day of focusing on and believing this would be the beginning of your freedom Bro. Don't be scared to share what you're going through with family and friends it really helps. IT WILL SURELY GET BETTER!

Oh boy did I have one of those lol 🙊. Super dangerous and makes navigating the already complicated care-finding journey 100x more difficult. That’s why talking about OCD needs to be more normalized, so we can help each other find helpful providers!! ❤

I have severe OCD this doesn't really resonate much with me very light on details. Even if I do not indulge in a bunch of compulsions it's not like I am magically cured. I get it even if she did not indulge in several compulsions I get it that's very hard but then how did she magically live the rest of her life with no OCD that makes no sense.

I’m sorry but overcoming OCD is not possible. I’ve lived with it for 28 years. I will have years of life not run by OCD… (in which I’ve thought I’ve overcome it) to be followed by years of my life that are run by OCD. It doesn’t just go away. If you get into a negative headspace it will creep back up. It always does. I’m sure this young woman will know this to be true as well at some point. I’m glad she’s on a positive upswing right now though 😊 life is great when you aren’t paralyzed by OCD.
