- Julia Cook describes how her early childhood was like living in a real-life horror movie with obsessive-compulsive disorder, OCD. Cook tells the story of how she managed to overcome her biggest fears, why and how others should overcome theirs as well. Julia Cook, originally from Vermont, US, used to live in a horror movie. The fears, thoughts and temptations were many. They eventually became too many for her own health. Cook tells the story of how she managed to overcome these fears, why and how others should overcome theirs as well. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
Thanks for sharing about your experiences. People think OCD is all about washing hands, but what they don't know is that it tends to attack their value system and can make someone question and doubt anything. I appreciate you!
Thank you so much! And thank you for all you do 🫶
Thank you for commenting here- I love your channel and it has helped me through so much! :)
I'm having a hard day with my OCD recovery today, and this helped me feel less alone. Although I don't have contamination OCD, this is still very helpful. Thank you for sharing your experience
Hi! I’m so proud of you, and I’m sending big hugs and strength through the screen!! ❤️❤️❤️ You’ve got this.
Awh thank you very much!! ❤️
Suppose you know ERP is the most widely used therapy in the western world.
You are not alone with OCD. Stay strong, i know how hard it is!
I have pure OCD, very hard too. You are not alone. I do pray for you now. You'll be healed, believe. Hugs,
I am currently working hard on my OCD, and agoraphobia, these conditions take over my life on the daily. I developed these conditions during the pandemic, and it's all new to me, but I really enjoyed this video and it is very inspirational, thank you.
Proud of you!! And best of luck. If I can do it, you can too ❤️❤️
@@juliacook9895 Thank you Julia, you are an inspiration.
You are relatable to my situation , i developed it too during the same pandemic, i don't know what to do
@@Sumedha12345 i understand, are you seeing a therapist?
I have OCD and CPTSD. I've just signed up for exposure therapy and will begin in November. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I am really looking forward through going through treatment because living this daily horror story is exhausting
This made me tear up. I am SO excited for the new life you are going to unlock. It will be hard, but incredibly worth it. I am proud of you!! ❤
@juliacook9895 thank you sm means a lot 🥹
I have done ERP for 1 month now and the results have been fantastic. And this is coming from a guy who was literally in a psych ward 1 month ago due to severe, crippling OCD. ERP works and you'll do great!
@@nealmccoy5727 amazing!!!!
@nealmccoy5727 thank you for sharing your story! Incredibly inspiring and proud of you. Although I'm nervous, I'm really hopeful about ERP and helping me overcome these debilitating condition.
I am doing ERP right now for sensorimotor OCD and it's saving my life. I was in a psych ward a few weeks ago and am already feeling good after just a few ERP sessions.
Amazing!! So so happy for you ❤️
What’s erp
@@Dandelionsandbutterflies exposure and response prevention therapy
@@gouthamjayapal2344 how do I do that
I don't struggle with contamination themes, but the bit at 2:20 about being scared of your life being "switched off" is so relatable. I'm so scared so often that some kind of catastrophe is on the way, and that any one thing could trigger it. It leads me to being a bit agoraphobic, feeling like I can't go anywhere or do anything because of the fear. It's stressful, but I'm doing my best to manage it. OCD is nothing like what the average person would think.
Can you talk to me im kind of feeling same to know if i had ocd or not
I'm going through severe ocd its like fighting life with every going moment . yeah it's the most terrible thing can happen to a person . Life just feeling useless . But still holding myself Allah will surely give strength and make a way for relief ❤
I hope you can access ERP therapy and get through this tough period. It gets better!!
God give you strength my brother, he has helped me have a fulfilling life even though I've had OCD since I was 12
@@bowser1252 InsAllah what's treatment you got there or it normals by time!
@@juliacook9895 I can do it myself !
So sorry about what you're going through. One thing I can say is, please take it ONE DAY AT A TIME. You are not those thoughts you're having, you're stronger than those obsessions or compulsions, and just one day of focusing on and believing this would be the beginning of your freedom Bro. Don't be scared to share what you're going through with family and friends it really helps. IT WILL SURELY GET BETTER!
Amazing talk! 🌟
Thank you for sharing 🤍🫶🏻
Thanks for sharing the Fear good luck 👍
I hate how ill-informed the public mostly are about OCD
thanks, good video
You are beautiful ❤ keep strong and God bless
Thank you ❤
OCD has brought me to the end of hope, I have no meaning to live at this point and I’m just ready to die
I know firsthand how you feel. Please keep trying to find the help that works for you. Psychiatric medication (Fluvoxamine works best for me, but I found that out through quite some trial and error) combined with ERP therapy truly saved my life. It CAN get better ❤️
It’s not your time yet. Pray to God, and ask Him- LordJesus show me how to live abundantly. You are giving me breath everyday , to wake up , that means I have purpose . Help me 🕊️✝️ feel and see purpose
Don’t lose hope. You are strong. Keep going.
Same😢😢 all the treatments are only failing!! 😭
My treatment is failing here too
I hate how many therapists I’ve been to, that claimed they specialized in OCD but in fact did not.
Oh boy did I have one of those lol 🙊. Super dangerous and makes navigating the already complicated care-finding journey 100x more difficult. That’s why talking about OCD needs to be more normalized, so we can help each other find helpful providers!! ❤
I have been in ERP therapy for about a year now. However I’m still REALLY struggling . How do I know when I need to go to a hospital to somewhere where I can just be helped ?
Have you tried medication together with your ERP?
Thank you ma'am ❤. God bless you 😂.All is right .Please! Pray for me ma'am.
I am surprised you only had OCD I have even cancer and many other things. 😊 few minutes ago I am listened integrated now I am listening to find the reason Badminton service dew to less processed specially cut wing to set next, the reason next station has couple smash ready before 2nd serve from serial one . 😊
I have severe OCD this doesn't really resonate much with me very light on details. Even if I do not indulge in a bunch of compulsions it's not like I am magically cured. I get it even if she did not indulge in several compulsions I get it that's very hard but then how did she magically live the rest of her life with no OCD that makes no sense.
❤🙏👏
this is bs, iykyk.....
I’m sorry but overcoming OCD is not possible. I’ve lived with it for 28 years. I will have years of life not run by OCD… (in which I’ve thought I’ve overcome it) to be followed by years of my life that are run by OCD. It doesn’t just go away. If you get into a negative headspace it will creep back up. It always does. I’m sure this young woman will know this to be true as well at some point. I’m glad she’s on a positive upswing right now though 😊 life is great when you aren’t paralyzed by OCD.
💔😭
Sorry to hear that but it is possible and believe me I've been through it all. Read Claire weekes book hope and help for your nerves. Believe me, I have been the exact same as you, but if you learn what she has taught, you will fully recover
@@nialllynch8217 I will read the book. Thank you.
@@nialllynch8217 how long have you gone now without an OCD attack?
Where you doing compulsions ?
