I think a key part of this is in the older episodes, the setup would lead to an unexpected joke - this one is set up by "those movies my cousin made were exploitation". Whereas today it'd be like, "This is going to be even funkier than that time I was cast in a blaxploitation version of Back to the Future" - really obvious and on the nose, where the punchline comes before the joke. What's odd is the writers seem to suggest these days that they don't really even like writing cutaways anymore, but feel obligated to by the fans...
