I dined at KOTO (know one teach one) before. It is a great restaurant-NGO who pick up homeless kids from the streets and teach them restaurant service skills + English. The food is great and you feel like you are doing a good thing by simply eating! Wish there are more businesses like this.

Starbucks can't compare to Cong Caphe in terms of quality (Coconut cacao smoothie is top notch too), plus you don't have to brand yourself a chump, paying for overpriced coffee for over roasted droppings.
When in Hanoi of course you are going to have fun in the Old Quarter and the East of West Lake (Tay Ho) but also take an afternoon and get lost in the Van Chuong neighbourhood (between the Turtle (scholar) "museum" and the train station) and explore the fascinating streets (đường/ngõ/phố) & alleyways (hẻm) where you witness daily vibrance & authenticity of a culture that is for life. After the sun sets, walk half a km south to a long market alley called Ngõ Chợ Khâm Thiên and don't get offended as people honk behind or to the side of you, it's a gesture saying "hey I'm here behind you coming up so don't be surprised".

I lived in this city for a long time before moving back to Saigon. And as a Hanoi lover, I can say this is Hanoi for tourist, not how us local sees the city. Not much of "real Hanoi" in this video I'm afraid.

They didn't show one of the biggest attractions in Hanoi, the Sofitale Legend Metropole Hanoi, a five-star hotel built by the French in the colonial style in 1901. But that was probably too cliched and too well-known.
The Vietnamese had an ambiguous relationship to French colonial architecture for a long time. On the one hand, it was a symbol of colonial oppression. On the other, the French were gone and they were just buildings, and fancy ones at that. Many were left empty or used for random purposes for a long time, but eventually the Vietnamese were like, "Fine, these buildings are nice and tourists want to see them, let's renovate them and invite people to come." The Metropole Hanoi is a successful product of this shift in attitudes and an opulent one at that.

In Nha Trang they have almost nothing of the French/Vietnamese architecture and atmosphere left. Sad, but that's what they want, becoming another soulless Chinese style skyline city..

This is not Hanoi. The filmmaker just cherry-picked fancy restaurants with vietnamese who speak english well for his convenience. No real cultural sites here. one-leg pagoda, the ho hoang kiem, the old quarters? It is in every guidebook. hanoi was fun when i was there for a few weeks, but i got to say, i miss SAPA and other cities more. vietnam is beautiful if you are lucky enough to get out of the cities.

Taking my family to visit Hanoi for the first time in 2 weeks. There will be an elderly and a 2 years old kid. Any Hanoi resident can recommend us on where to eat and see in Hanoi? We're not too keen on walking or riding motorcycle. We renting a house neat the airport. So someplace within Taxi driving range. Not big on street food either, the our kid and all.

    • @Malystrixiel
      @Malystrixiel 8 лет назад +1

+Ada Repli I sincerely welcome you to Vietnam, although I have some reservations about your request. The country is transforming, but you do realize it IS still a developing/third-world country? If you can't tolerate street food, the scooter scene, and the fact that you stay near the airport (for 2 weeks), you're likely to miss out 90% of this city. Sure there are fine dining and plazas, but these places are gonna be similar to any other metropolitan areas you will be visiting, perhaps, not as impressive. The culture of Hanoi is ingrained in its history and social values, which, for the most parts, are not very "modernized."
The reason I'm saying this is because I think it's unfortunate that many foreigners come to the country but can't accept the "real" culture of the city. You know, things like the street food is not going to be monitored by some federal agency or so, the toilets in small stores/restaurants are not going to be very clean, people are going to be "louder" on public transports, so on and so forth. But you know what, this is part of the culture itself. I know it might sound horrifying, but keep an open mind, get to know the people and you will experience a lot of amazing things.
THAT being said, if you still insist on visiting Hanoi and only to the more "westernized" areas, then there is the Royal City complex - which I believe, is the largest underground mall complex in South East Asia. And then there are some French-influenced quarters with very interesting architect in the Old Quarter of Hanoi (or commonly known as the 36 streets). Some of the most fancy restaurants are going to be in this area too. If you want a retreat from the city, there are many resorts in about an hour or so driving distance (Flamingo Dai Lai, Ba na Hills, etc.) I would suggest you go through a travel agency and rent a private tour. It might be pricy, but considering your needs, I think a private tour would work best.
Bear in mind I did not suggest any historical places (aka the real "beauty" of Hanoi), because as you might have guessed, it's gonna involves lots of walking, very crowded places etc.
I hope you enjoy your stay.

    • @-_glowing.redmoon_-
      @-_glowing.redmoon_- 8 лет назад

+Malystrixiel Thank you for such insight. We end up booking a beach house near Ha long Bay (thank you, airbnb) where we will do main cruises and kid-friendly tour.
Sorry if my previous comment came off as pompous. That wasn't my intention at all. We have done many travel throughout the world and try our best to embrace their cultures and food. I, personally, love street food and getting off the beaten path and find something amazing tug away. With that said, we normally travel with elder and kid. So, health issue is our #1 concern. We'll be traveling in March, it'll be hot. So motorcycle and walking is out of the question for us. With international driver licence not permitted in Vietnam, we are down to one option of getting taxi around.
Anyhow, we're just passing through Hanoi and go straight to Halong Bay.
