    That's pretty slick!
    As someone with very little knowledge when it comes to bike repair and modding, I'd really appreciate a detailed look into your design.
    I don't think the actual CAD files would be any good, since the size varies from bike to bike, plus you put a lot of time and effort into it so it wouldn't be fair to expect you to share them anyway. A breakdown of how the different sections work would be amazing.

    Great work! Did you try applying full torque at the cranks (while standing on pedals) to see if the plastic sprockets would survive? In theory they should, I guess, as 1000W power motors use plastic gears (but they are nylon and injection molded)

    • @Westloki
      @Westloki  3 дня назад +1

      Yes, I did some good test on the crankset. The front sprocket and the rear one are in PETG at about 75% infill, and so far, they show no signs of cracking or premature wear. The only issue I have is that if I put a lot of tension, the belt sometimes skips a tooth. This happens because I couldn’t apply enough tension. The second version of this assembly will likely address this problem.

    Try researching immersive waxing for bike chains. It's a bit of an rabbit hole to get fully into it, but once you switch to waxing, you will never go back to chain oil. Wax doesn't attract dirt, it is hydrophobic, so no more dirty hands while handling the chain. Also it has superior lubrication properties compared to any oil out there, so the whole drivetrain will last much longer. I own both bikes with chain and carbon drive belt and honestly since I started waxing the chain, I see no real disadvantages to chain over the belt. And the best thing is that all you need to do to have chain pristine clean is to put it in a jar with hot water and shake. The wax will fully melt and since it's less dense than water, it will foat on top of the water with all the contaminants. Then you just need to dry the chain and reapply the wax.If you rotate 2-3 chains, it can give you even few months of riding between needing to think about waxing.

    • @difflocktwo
      @difflocktwo 21 день назад +1

      putting a chain into a jar is way too much work. as is taking it off at all. what? every how many km do you do this? do you ride through out the whole winter?

    • @jebysblog

      Try belt... I've belt on one of my bikes and dream about bringing it on all my bikes

    • @alexp2011a
      @alexp2011a 4 дня назад

      Interesting. I've looked into it and unfortunately paraffin wax isn't biodegradable, so it will be shed into the environment as pollutant, belt drive on the other hand will release some microplastic over its lifetime, although I doubt the amounts are comparable.

    • @FranticGuitar88
      @FranticGuitar88 4 дня назад

      @@difflocktwo @jebysblog - I find waxing actually much easier and much less time consuming. I need to re-wax about 1-2 times a season and I always do about 10 chains at the same time. Each of my bikes have 3 chains which I just swap until they need re-waxing. I also have belt drive on my commuter bike, and even though it is pretty much "maintenance free", you have to do service eventually to tighten the belt to spec and change oil/grease in the planetary gear inside the hub and that I find to be a hell of a job. Also belt drive as of now, is not very suitable for full suspension enduro and trail bikes, so even though it could be an alternative to waxing, it has it's limitations. It is also less efficient compared to chain.

    • @difflocktwo
      @difflocktwo 4 дня назад

      @@FranticGuitar88 So wax three chains once a year, then swap chains twice a year? And they last?
      I buy a new chain once a year and and also have a 8 speed hub that I oil bath once a year.

  • @humanmusiciansareredundant
    @humanmusiciansareredundant 25 дней назад

    that is a neat solution with little practical use. added friction, complexity, points of failure, maybe some vulnerability to dirt, janky mounting.. especially when split belts exist.

      I thought a lot about your response, and I realize it’s actually quite clever. At first, I couldn’t see how to tighten the strap with your system, but after thinking about it, by moving the second bearing closer to the crankset, it could indeed create a tension . I’ll keep that in mind for a potential version 2 !
