  • On April 25, 2015, rock legend Rick Derringer performed a special concert at the Maranatha Church of the Nazarene, Paramus NJ. During a staged panel discussion he spoke about becoming a born-again Christian and how that affected his music writing and performances.
    Lead guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer Rick Derringer began his illustrious career in 1965 with The McCoys on "Hang On Sloopy." He went on to have numerous successes as a solo artist as well as with other notable rock icons such as The Edgar Winter Group, Johnny Winter and Weird Al Yankovic.
    Rick gave his permission to The Bridge of Truth to upload his portion of the discussion. The footage is provided courtesy of Kaltenbach Productions.

    It warms my heart to know that Rick Derringer is a fellow brother in Christ. I've been a fan of his since his Sloopy days.

    Rick Derringer is quite simply a brilliant and insightful gentlemen. He is one amazing servant of the Lord Jesus/Yeshua, and for all he has accomplished he remains a very humble, talented, intelligent man, husband and father who is walking daily in Christ's mercy, grace and love. Considering it is our job as ambassadors of Christ to love all people and it's God's job to transform them. I pray the Lord continues to bless and use Rick always. May the love he pours out daily causes healing miracles and signs and wonders in Jesus Christ of Nazareth's almighty name.

    Glad to see Rick's a Christian,I'm also a Christian musician and so is my brother though we're not at Rick's level,back in the seventies we played in a rock band together,today my brother plays strictly Christian music in churches and I still play secular music in clubs,we are both song writers but neither one of us write or perform anything we feel is wrong,all my brothers songs are totally Christian rock but I write about whatever I feel like writing about my stuff is pop rock in a very Beatles vein since I was so influenced by them,I feel God can do whatever he sees fit for both of us with both our music and our lives. Bob.

    Tremendous example of how a person's encounter with Christ is supposed to effect him -- practical transformation! So many artists profess Christ in their "civilian" life, but then continue to perform just as they did in their BC days: "It's just a song!" or "It's only my job!", they'll rationalize. That's all baloney, of course -- Jesus is supposed to impact every aspect of our lives. Some things need to stop altogether when we come to faith in Him. Others need to be tweaked. Point is: "Whether you eat or drink, do all to the glory of God." (1 Cor 10:31) So encouraged Rick Derringer is living this out!

      Well, Kerry Livgren from Kansas made a very profound statement in defense of continuing in secular music many years back when he said "just because I'm a Christian carpenter doesn't mean I only have to build churches." That's one thing, but the other person I'm really concerned about is Mark Farner. I know he's had a really rough time with the church accepting him as a brother, and it seems the secular music world accepts him a lot better than the church, which is a shame. The secular world is really drawing him back in a big way, and I know in the music business, the temptation to fall back into the worlds ways is ten times greater than in any other profession. Pray that someone keeps Rick Derringer from drifting

    Oh, yeah: I saw the McCoys in 1966 in NYC one summer evening when they were opening for The Stones. My older brother was with me at the time. 4 years later (as guitarist with Buddy MIles) my brother was performing at the 'jam' session after Jimi Hendrix's funeral. If I remember correctly and have my story right: He played "Rock N Roll Hootchie Koo" with Johnny Winter, Noel Redding, and Mitch Mitchell. During service, at the request of the Hendrix family, the reverend sang-'What A Friend We Have In Jesus'. While all this was going on, I was at a boarding school in New Hampshire with Judy Collins' kid sister. At the time, big sister Judy had a top 20 hit with her version of 'Amazing Grace'. the following year, 1971, I saw Edgar Winter's White Trash in my hometown, play live, with Rick Derringer. What really got to me that evening was the tune-'Dying To Live'. Years later, I showed up at my brother's deathbed with a Bible and read to him from 1 John 3 & 4; particularly the line-'In order to be righteous, you have to love your brother'. And then the next to last thing I said to my brother alive was the opening line to The Righteous Brothers' "Rock N Roll Heaven".

    I saw Rick play in bar down by Georgia Tech about twenty years ago. There were maybe 50 people there and he played like there were 50,000. It was a fantastic show. I'm glad I saw him then. If I went to show today and the lyrics of "Still Alive And Well" sounded more like scripture I'd be disappointed, frankly. Christianity and rock and roll are not mutually exclusive. Ask Alice Cooper. All the best to Rick.

    As a life long RD fan I do feel hurt by his comments saying we are his enemy. Sad to hear this and I don't think he really means to indicate that all rock and roll fans are bad or evil but his message just did not come over well.

    • @dbrinkm1
      @dbrinkm1 6 лет назад +3

      That is NOT what Rick means at all. His fans are Not his enemies .Satan is his enemy and all those who are not believers in Jesus Christ and his redemptive work on the cross, are in the camp of Satan [ the enemy ] and not in the Lords. camp of believers. Have no fear Rick loves all his fans but he wants them to have eternal life through Salvation in Jesus Christ . Rick would most definitely agree with this statement I too, am a RD fan and his same age.I am also a Christian of 60 years...God Bless !

    Ill be honest with you Ive always had an ear for music that is how I learned and even if there was I couldnt read it or it was in the wrong Key. But after recieving the Holy Spirit I definately got an upgrade and learned which songs were anointed and those that were junk. N usually Pentecostals tend to know this as well and Im not sure if its the keys the emotions or what but it stirs up the anointing in me to the point I can begin to call on his presence as I followed the narrow path t5hrough fasting and praying the Lords prayer. It sounds tough but it really isnt once you become fat adaptive the easy way is start drinking Bullet proof coffee a mixture of MCT oil or butter in ur coffee and blended like a latte. As it tastes terrible but it satiates your hunger in the morning. Until you can begin to start skipping breakfeast. And only eating between noon and 8 PM other wise know as time restrictive eating and intermitant fasting. The goal being reaching a state of Ketosis where you are no longer hungry for foods or sugars its a very strange feeling almost spiritual. But once your in ketosis you can fast as long as you want and it is very easy Because you are getting energy from fats stored inside your body some might call it starving but its not starving if the Grehlin or hunger hormone is satiated. I said its a strange feeling but the Apostle Paul described it like a runner in a race getting his "second wind" and being able to run much much further its kind of a surereal feeling. But Id recommend not doing it more then a few weeks initially. But it is very good for your brain and heart health. And if you continue it will get easier and easier as time goes buy. And there is much more known about it today then in times past allb the health and wellness benefits whether your anointed or not I believe it is a human survival mechanism for hard or difficult times. You can go without food but you have to have water or tea coffee or milk or oil.

    Being a good and decent person with an earnest and forgiving soul has nothing to do with joining a club centered around speaking a specific vocabulary and practicing the idolatry of a specific human or supernatural personality. Get a clue folks.

    For the people making comment: The Bible is a book of what is comprehensive of the truth of exisitence. [i] Humanity did come to be in existence, [ii] and humanity had become gifted with a way and means to reproduce (give birth). As life mutiplied, people crossed paths and esblished policies by which humanity yields to each other. Therefore, religion is the beliefs and policies upon which humanity constitues harmony (peace); The policies govern humanity as humanity goes "to and from" work or other social events (grocery shopping. etc.). The enemy lines would not be a concert hall (theater), but enemy lines are those attending a concert who are driven by demon; The demons influence some people to drink to much alcohol, until they are sick with the bliggerance of a hang-over, then sometime they infringe upon others while drunk. This is TRUE at a grocery store or city hall Not all people are demon driven, but the demons are the bad influences that try to have executives, doctors, factory workers, and so on, attend dinner parties where they get tempted to get to drunk. CASE in point is: Rick is not desiring to be demon driven and tempted to drink to much. The mere fact you have life, you have TEMPATION (The concept of the devil, the devil's demons and hell); You must lear how much alcohol you can drink and project how to go about your drinking without intruding upon other people. If you go to a grocery store and man has been tempted by demons to rob the store with a gun, the enemy lines are the man with a gun robbing the store (not the store). Most people at the store are not enemies. OR: You do not invite enemies to your house, you find that you sometimes confront enemies, as you go to grocery stores or concerts.

    Rick, you could always read the Bible as a Catholic; that is an egregious error to say you couldn't as a Catholic. Instead, it seems like you're following a faith where other people interpreted the Bible on their own and invented their own doctrines. PS: the Catholic Church canonized the Bible and gave the world the Bible. When people like Luther, John Smith / Brigham Young, Charles Russell, Jimmy Swaggart et al started interpreting things got wonky. Come back to the Church Jesus founded !

      +David don't take that personal. He's talking to a christian audience here, and a lot of Christians really view Rock and Roll as the exclusive domain of the destroyer. I suspect if Rick Derringer really saw his audience as the enemy he wouldn't be playing. Here he's simply bridging the two worlds together.
