My purpose didn’t come until my son was born. Not even while my ex was pregnant. In fact I was miserable because I thought my life was over. But my life is just getting started now that he’s here. He’s only 3 but he has completely given me purpose and life. I love being his dad.

With an immeasurable, self-sacrificing divine love working in us and through us, imagine what we can do. If you let God do anything He wanted with your life, what could your life be like?

I'd say that becoming responsible and sensible towards other animals and ourselves may lead us to question our learnt idea that «we are superior to them and thus we are somehow entitled to manipulate, trap, own and use them for profit, pleasure and enjoyment».
I mean, that's a scary rabbit hole to go down. Are you implying that you aren't superior to a goldfish? Or a tapeworm? Or a bacteria? There's assigning meaning to lower life forms, and then there's assigning negative meaning to yourself. Important to know the difference.

This looks like some ideas one could came up after some introspection. Does the one who is not reflecting on themselves at this level have less value than me? I would incur into double standards if I defended this.
Back to goldfish. Why am I superior to a goldfish? In which standards would I judge myself to be superior to a goldfish? Or an elephant? Or another human? Which type of biases could be sustaining the reasonings and rationalization of our superiority?
What if we approached this topic from another angle? In which ways a goldfish, an elephant, another human and I are equal?
Each one of us in an «individual» who values their own life, in their own parameters.
We were trained to think that we need to use animals to be healthy. We were conditioned to believe there's no ethical conflict when it comes to subjugate other animals for our enjoyment. We were socialised into neglecting the interests of nonhuman individuals, and imposing ours onto their lives, bodies and effort.
Well, regardless of any ideological indoctrination, most of us don't want to cause a harm we can avoid causing. May this conviction lead us to question our superiority assumptions over nonhuman individuals. May the courage to explore this rabbit hole lead us to contemplate speciesism and anthropocentrism as potential obstacles in our development, both as individuals and as a collective.

I'm not really included to go over 5 paragraphs here, but I will say it is an extremely dangerous line of thought to equivocate the lives of humans and the lives of germs or parasites. And I would posit that you are putting forth ideological indoctrination yourself (should you express this to a mind willing to listen), so perhaps the problem isn't with if something is ideological indoctrination or not, but more if the idea is inherently harmful.
If you want to treat animals better, more power to you, I agree with you on that. But if I have to choose between your life and a mosquito, I'm going to save you 100/100 times. And if a mosquito bites me, I'm going to try to kill it 100/100 times. There are important differences between all things.
It's rooted in mortality. To understand just how extraordinary humans are and then to think they all just die. The Epic of Gilgamesh shows how incredibly hard it was for humans to grasp that they just die. Trivializing the mind and experience is a coping mechanism.

I hope not because if that’s the case, then you just blew my mind. I think that under reaching while connecting with people is in one way defense mechanism. your worth/potential or value in front of others that you communicate through speech or words or text maybe a habit and not a manipulation. I find that if you talk big and you aim high ,depending on who’s around you, you have quite the fall and quite the injury to the reputation and the mind if and when you get knocked down (or made wrong). In essence when you’re not surrounded by the healthiest of people, understand that fitting in or not assigning yourself and your thoughts so much value shows one thing but the duplicity to it is,
You stand out less. Youre less of a mark. I know who I am on the inside. that you know yourself that you’re less greedy instead of all consuming shows more accurately an innate flexibility. I feel. which falls in line with not being perfect. Which is completely fine to project and communicate. I like to learn and I learn new things every day. So to be humble and meek, and have doubts is an approach of mine that goes to show that I’m willing to be wrong first of all because I’m human. And then I’m willing to not over inflate my worth and right now. I’m still in the process of figuring out who I am and what my value is. I hope it’s not a dark energy surrounding it., like you’re getting to above Mr. Peterson. Now I’m going to go finish this video talk . confidence is great. Healthy people are drawn to confidence. But so are the not so good people.
I say, depending on your situation, don’t pretend to try to be on top just be in it and look at people on their level and try to help the situation.

I’ve never seen a video of Jordan Peterson where he said something a rational person would disagree with
A couple issues: in the grand scheme of existence, billions of years could be a small unit of measure.
We presume consciousness to be of value relatively, because we haven’t observed other forms of consciousness that can self-monitor, but we do not know with certainty that no other species engages in introspection.
We can observe the solar system and the multitudes of galaxies. Through this we can ascertain that the likelihood we are alone is vanishingly small. Our relevance to that, could be trivial.
Not everyone who believes they have no worth are trying to escape responsibility. I believe it is an ingrained belief instilled by toxic shame through how others have treated you. If you feel like trash, then you think you have nothing to offer the world. Why, would trash be of any use?
No, they are not escaping responsibility rather attempting to escape the shame and the pain it brings. If only they were told they have something to offer rather than being shamed again for not taking responsibility as they should.

"The constant attempts by people to trivialize the nature of their own consciousness" is a pretty accurate representation of the core doctrine in Zen Buddhism, as I see it. I completely agree with dr. Peterson on that it has "a dark side".
No, that is not an accurate description of Zen Buddhism. If anything, Zen teaches you to be totally aware of life in all aspects. It values perception more than thinking, hence its root in meditation. Zen buddhism is about seeing thoughts for what they are so that they no longer distort one's perception of reality, but rather complement it. Zen wants to cultivate consciousness and therefore awareness.
@shamswalla1363 I'm afraid you don't understand what Buddhism is about in general and what Zen is for specifically. Cultivating awareness through meditation, including that in the state of dhyana in Sanskritt or zen (禅) according to the Japanese reading of the Chinese translation from Sanskritt, has only one objective: the realization that there is no eternal self, neither in ourselves nor in nature, following the principle of anatta in Sanskritt or 無我 in Chinese. Hence, our personal consciousness is substantially meaningless as long as it operates within the frame of our own personal identity. If this doctrine does not trivialize the nature of my own consciousness as a person on the false premise that the ultimate reality is not personal, I really don't know what it does at all.
@@tatsutagawa2998 See, the problem you are refering to is one of translation and indoctrination. You are pointing to the Japanese tradition which is actually a late adaptation and a very extreme version of the original Chan Buddhism. When we look at the original Chan Buddhism(, which has arguably its roots in ancient India,) as it is for example found and practiced in the Shao Lin culture, we can see that the "annihilation" or "discarding" of the self was never an issue nor a real topic at all, rather than a challenge to be accepted, or as the original ways call it "the Self is the master already enlightened and therefore something to be aware of". In no way was the self or for that matter our own consciousness ever regarded as "meaningless". By definition of the principles that Chan Buddhism is based upon there can really be no trace of any sort of nihilism whatsoever. It is rather an encouragement to live life to the fullest.
@shamswalla1363 Sorry, but your answer closely resembles a new age word salad. Anatta, or the non-existence of the self, was the central truth claim made by Buddha, and all Buddhist traditions accept it. If living life to the fullest means anything at all in Buddhism, it is nothing more than an intermediate stage on the path to the enlightenment, the full acceptance that our own self is just a dream with no roots in reality, whether you pursue it through perception as in Zen, or thinking as in other Buddhist traditions.

The Buddha never said that the Self is non-existent, he rather said something more closely to what you already said, that "it is an intermediate stage on the pathway to nirvana/enlightenment", what he therefore meant was that the self is a means to an end and is very real because it is subject to constant change, it is always moving ever changing like the river of reality, and it is subject to duality, the wheel of suffering, it has no eternal element to it because it is changing constantly - never really stays the same. By traditions/interpretations saying that the self is non-existent, you rob yourself of the capacity to end your suffering. Be aware of false doctrine, my friend.

Jordan articulates well the Biblical cosmology of a flat disc with a dome overtop, within which are the stars. Of course, this is what the original writers believed. You don't have to believe it, but if you don't then you can't say you take the Bible literally in context.
It is the setting of the stage upon which the greatest drama of all time will proceed. The stage is real. The excitement is real. All other matters are minor details in context of the drama.
