Every person, no matter their intelligence or education or life's circumstances was made as an individual.... with no one on earth being 100% identical. Every person has value.... maybe some contribute to mankind more than others, but there is a takeaway, large or miniscule from everyone. I was in a very elevated state of anxiety at the time. My condition would be obvious to someone like him, but for me, from the moment we shook hands I felt the immediate change in my demeaner. An immediate calming down, foot off the gas, take a moment to breath type of change. The type of antidote a guy like Jordan Peterson is very good at administering. It felt real and it felt sincere. Like he took the weight from my shoulders and carried it away. Apparently it was noticeable 'cause when I went back upstairs to my son's room I had quite the glow on. I was asked "why so happy all of a sudden?". I met Jordan Peterson.

i read a book about emotional cogntion and it made me realize that respect, just like happiness or sadness is an emotion that is influencial. So if you feel respect towards others or feel happiness towards others, they are very likely to feel that same emotion when they see and recognize it in you.

Thanks for the breakdown! Learned some great things.
To address the first point: Peterson is an avid thinker and I'm not sure if he's consciously doing the "That's a good point" technique. I rather believe that to arrive at a conclusion he really believes in, he has this internal dialogue with himself, where he plays both sides of the argument. That also ties into the "you"s and hypotheticals that he uses, as these are his habits of discussing with himself. It's like a constant training for your brain to switch from perspective to perspective in an argument, which is now ingrained into him.
That's how he's able to say "That's a good point" with conviction as it is something he has seriously considered before judging.

      Han Jou,
Well, it's not difficult when you know what you know. But things I heard from Peterson so far (capitalism as a good efficient system, veganism as cult, and he being "a believer") are wrong, I can't believe people change their mind to *that* kind of thinking/ideas/interpretations... He is a good speaker, maybe born maybe learnt, but he is wrong (on the subjects I heard him talk).

I saw something from Peterson in one of those final clips that I don’t think I’ll ever see his contemporaries, specifically people who specialize in “owning” their opponents (biggest example in my mind being Ben Shapiro), he’s just standing with his hand on his chin, calmly listening to the opinions of the person who’s talking to him. It conveys a deep respect for not just the person, but for their intelligence and right to have an opinion, and I think that’s what gains him respect during and after debates. Unlike people who indulge in shouting matches to feed their ego or widen their echo chamber, he appears to have a deep respect for the other person, which makes it easier for them to respect him in turn.
Tl;dr: An easy way to gain respect is by first showing someone else that respect, people are more likely to show you respect if they themselves feel respected.

"Clean up your room" means also to start getting your live in order in little steps. It's the idea that if your life is a mess, surely there is always one little part that you can do to make your life a little better. This in the end spirals you upwards. You don't just go out fight the dragon, you first get your armour fixed and think about what exactly you will do, which ultimately raises your chances of killing the dragon.

Professor Peterson is a personal hero of mine. His discussion is pointed and articulate yet often unaccusatory when possible. He understands that his philosophies and ideals are held behind a barrier of demeanor and character. He's less concerned about winning the argument and more concerned about saving the culture, and society looks at his expressions before they see into his ideas. It's beautiful and necessary for today's common discourse.

MORE LIKE 'CHEWING GUM' FOR THE 'EYE BALLS', A WAY TO PASS SOME TIME ,WHILE YOUR WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN, OR YOUR BORED , HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL TO DO, NO READING MATERIAL WORTHWHILE AROUND , OR TRYING TO MAKE A LONG WAIT, NOT SEEM SO LONG !!? I GET ANNOYED WHEN PEOPLE WANT TO POINT TO SOMETHING THEY HEARD OR SAW IN A MOVIE AS A REFERENCE ..MAYBE I DIDN'T SEE THAT MOVIE ! OR IF I MIGHT HAVE, JUST NEVER GAVE IT ANY REAL THOUGHT OR ATTENTION !!
I WOULD RATHER READ A GOOD BOOK WELL WRITTEN ..AND GET MY INFORMATION, INSPIRATION , IDEAS , THOUGHTS ON " THINGS " FROM THAT AS APPOSED TO A "MOVIE" !? I THINK OF MOVIES AS MORE OF , IT WAS ENTERTAINING ,FUNNY, SCARY , SAD , INTERESTING, STRANGE , DIFFERENT, BORING , BAD , POORLY MADE , ON VERY RARE OCCASIONS WOULD I REMEMBER ANYTHING FROM A MOVIE AS IMPORTANT , UNLESS IT WOULD BE A DOCUMENTARY ..A TEACHING MOVIE , HISTORICAL , "IF" AND ONLY "IF" IT WAS ACCURATE !! I JUST DO NOT HOLD MOVIES IN HIGH ESTEEM !
AND I HATE TO WATCH A MOVIE MORE THEN ONCE .. MY RECALL IS VERY GOOD ! SO I DON'T WANT TO SIT THROUGH IT AGAIN !!! THAT'S THE VERY "HEIGHT OF BOREDOM" TO ME !!

It may have something to do with people identify too much with their opinions. With the demise of many social institutions in many people’s lives. - religion, the local community, ethnic identification even their family - people form their sense of self around their opinions and become very emotional in defending them. Little realising that they’re going to at least modify their opinions throughout their lives through experience and learning if they are a person open to change. There is nothing sadder than someone in their 50s and 60s with the same opinions as they had in their 20s.

In my opinion, and I do respect yours, It's not mainly about what he says. The respect he attains about his body language, his confidence, his voice tonality and his calm nature. If you take a winny, anxious and insecure kid practicing the same techniques as Mr Peterson, he will only be seen as agreeable and afraid of conflict.
This is just my opinion thou, you are sharing value with this video, these are indeed good points for getting respect, but as long as you dont fix you communications skills in a deeper level, no one - and I repeat - NO ONE will be compelled to listen. We make judgemente of who deserves our attention and respect in the first fraction of a second we meet, and we finish our assumptions by about 7 seconds. That being said, if you happen to present a weak impression, no amount of diplomacy and dialogue will change their opinion, even if you have the most important thing to say.
Cheers and keep up the good work.

He must've found the jewel in the heart, the source of all knowledge. If so, it wasn't easy, it took hard work to get to the top of his field, and then boom! Illumination. (I'm sure he doesn't have all the answers but the sensible truth flows right out of him).

To point 1, my philosophy: If I can't argue FOR my opposition, then I can't argue AGAINST them.
Seeing where they come from is necessary to connect, but it's also a safeguard for your personal beliefs. If they're not worthy of being challenged, then they're not worthy of having, let alone sharing.
I have massive respect for Peterson specifically because he's so calm and gracious whenever he can and should be, but he refrains from being a pushover. He can empathize and still disagree knowing his position better precisely because he's familiar with the opposite opinion.

I have this saved on one of my playlists, I think it is very insightful. I think we can put it into practice best by embracing the principals and honing our character. I think the principals are a respect and genuine care for all people and an empathy with their journey of trying to understand life. If this was taken as tools and techniques to gain respect and change peoples minds then it misses the point and people will see through it. I’ve heard people teach ways of showing that you are listening, leaning in, nodding head occasionally etc. Then I heard someone cut through all that who said, ‘ never mind trying to look like you are listening, just really listen and concentrate on trying to understand.’, concentrating on caring for someone else.

Any tips on how to think "faster on the spot"? I consistently feel like my processing speed is slow and am left looking like a deer in the headlights when debating, even over topics I am very knowledgeable on. Thanks.

That "down time" you spend thinking in a debate likely seems much longer to you (in your own head) than to anyone else. So don't force yourself to answer immediately - you're better off with a 5 second pause that lets you collect yourself than immediately jumping into a rambling response. If you've ever watched Elliott Hulse speak on camera (we have a video on him) he does an excellent job of allowing these breaks. If done right, without filler words, this time you take to collect your thoughts actually captures more attention because of the pregnant pause

Embrace the speed of your thought processes. Generally speaking, taking time actually makes for a more well-rounded response that shows you grappled with the topic, and not just saying the first thing off the top.
If you pace your delivery (pausing to give people time to digest your words) as well as your thought process, you come across as someone who is knowledgeable as opposed to slow. Because you own the pauses, people will naturally listen more closely and take what you're saying on board. Chances are you're not as slow to respond as you think anyway - just look at the number of commas I used typing this lol

Dont worry too much about it sometimes its better to take your time and think before just jumping in and not thinking. Obama is a good example hes more deliberate when he talks with lots of pauses

I love hearing all these clips of Peterson. He is so Canadian :) as a Canadian, I so appreciate hearing the way he talks (feels like home) vs the way Americans talk. The differences are almost undescribable, but you know it when you hear it.
