I went from a 2018 iPad Pro to the M2 iPad Pro (both 12.9") and my favorite new feature is SO MAY MORE LAYERS IN PROCREATE! I work a lot at 11x14" 300ppi and went from 32ish layers to about 130! I don't know what the RAM difference is between the two, (I know the M1 and M2 iPads can use a virtual memory swap of up to an additional 16GB from storage, not sure If that's how they're achieving it,) but it's been a breath of fresh air for my work.

This feature doesn’t seem worth upgrading my iPad. I know Apple will keep making my “older” hardware feel “outdated” through their sophisticated planned obsolescence approach to marketing, but I’ll ignore it as long as I can.
I’m pretty much in a position where I have everything I need with the iPad Pro 3rd Gen and Pro Create. It’s a device that perfectly serves its purpose.
As long as I can sketch and colour, I’m set. They created the wheel. Anything else is just racing stripes.

I really like your view on this. When I watch some reviews about the iPad Pro the only thing the compare it too is previous iPad Pro and making it sound as everyone changes iPad each generation. I will be changing from 1st gen iPad Air form 2013 so this is a huuuge jump in performance for me. I think of this iPad as just a refresh that will serve even longer

When people complain about planned obsolescence, is apple really the worst culprit? Not saying they are angels, but who is doing it better? I know Samsung have pinky promised to support their devices for 5 years, but to Apple’s credit, the OG iPad Pro from 2015 still gets OS updates. How does an 8 year old surface pro stack up against the 8 year old iPad?
Honestly, Apple just seems like the lesser of 2-3 very evils.

@@sloppynyuszi My iPad pro bought in 2018 (2nd gen) is also holding up perfectly against what I expected from my past Apple experience with the ipod touch that was obsolete after 3 years. We still get updates even if it’s missing some stuff like the new multitasking view (forgot the name). Only thing I wish I had from the new models is apple pencil 2 and the more modern looking design. Meanwhile, my Pixel 3a from 2019 that I really enjoy using stopped receiving updates in may 2022… So yeah I’m looking into getting an iPhone next to try the apple ecosystem out since they get 5+ years of support. Sucks cuz I really like how Pixels work but 3 years of support is horrendous for a 600$ phone.

I work as a professional automotive designer, and I upgraded my iPad Pro 11 2020 to the M2 12.9, and although the amount of features I get additional is small (hover, which is genuinely useful for me), the overall smoothness in sketching and drawing apps is so much better. A typical sketch and render file will have around 70+ layers for me, and although I don’t get that many more additional layers, moving around layers, using symmetry tools and overall sketching has gotten so much smoother, and I no longer feel like I’m waiting on the iPad, or that it’s getting in the way of my workflow, everything works so well that I can focus on the actual designs themselves. For most people, my opinion is that an M1 or even older iPad is good enough for general art, but for professionals and people who work with a lot (and I mean A LOT) of layers and apps, the M2 is a solid professional tool that I use in conjunction with my PC.

I just moved up from an iPad Air 3 to an M1 iPad Pro 12.9" because of the hype over the M2 - got a killer deal on an open box model. While hover would be a nice feature when drawing, I figure until I try it I don't know what I'm missing... and since Davinci will actually run on my old Air 3 (lol), I figure the M1 has more than enough if I need to play with video. Besides, video is why I bought my MBP - not my iPad, so it's not like I'm going to be trying to edit hardcore on a 12.9" screen instead of my dual 27" monitor workstation setup.

One thing to note about the file management is that cloud storage apps (not iCloud, third-party ones) STILL don't support selecting folders. I tried with Dropbox and Google Drive, neither of them let you do this. Copying folders in and out of cloud storage apps so you can work on them in local storage or iCloud is extremely frustrating. This isn't purely an Apple problem, of course, but it and no pro dev tools is literally THE LAST thing that makes my iPad not feel like a computer.
Related problems I've had with Dropbox on iPad specifically (not sure if Google Drive or OneDrive has the same problems but I don't want to switch off Dropbox since I also daily-drive Linux):
    - Copying whole folders out of Dropbox using Files works, but only intermittently. Sometimes it'll hang Dropbox, and then you can't open anything in Dropbox until you kill the app.
    - There's no indication when or if files are actually being uploaded until you see them show up on Dropbox on your Real Computer™️. If they do not upload, they go in Dropbox Limbo until you open Dropbox on the iPad and refresh repeatedly. Worst part is, if you save a file multiple times THE FILES DON'T OVERWRITE. You get multiple copies of the same file with a number, instead of just having the latest version of the file there LIKE IT SHOULD BE.

Oh my. I can only imagine some cross-platform (iPadOS and Android for tablets) toolkits being involved in that inconvenient inconsistency.
The second point reminds me of the mobile Evernote clients, particularly the one on Android. The newer Evernote 10 platform (as I call it) did away with manual sync and sync status that the older Evernote 2 platform used to have, instead having everything sync automatically, but that causes problems for me as I often run into issues syncing the mobile apps, then I'd get conflicting changes which aren't indicated in the titles on the new platform like they are on the old platform. Ugh, I should try to talk about it in the Evernote support forums if I have the time (which I likely won't).

The ipad pro m2 is the best ipad to get now, but if you don`t care about the hover feature I would just buy the M1 if you can still get it at a good price. I think the next year ipad will be signifiently better though. Probably moving to a 3nm prossessor instead of 5nm. That would give a performance bump and better battery life. They should also skip 8GB of ram and have 16GB of ram and 256GB og storage as the base model for the pro models. Let Air and the mini have 8GB….
Actually, why is RAM and storage so expensive in apple products? It seems like it only as a marketing ploy to get people to pay more even though the production cost between the models are insignificant. Production wise it would probably be cheapet to have less options 🎉

but the m2 126gb is only 150 dollars more...

I'm looking to upgrade from an iPad Air 3 to a new(er) pro. I prefer the 12.9 v 11" screen. My budget is to get a 5th gen 12.9, but I am wondering if I should just cough up more now for the 6th gen to get the hover feature. Do you think it's something that'll continue to advance and be really useful for artists?

  • @fchho

The M1 iPad could easily have that hover feature, Apple just decided not to include this update so people would buy the M2 iPad.

what a shame that this fantastic function didn't work on my iPad air 4 ... I was thinking to mirror my iPad screen to macbook, so I can have a bigger screen to draw, and it is good for my neck. However, there's no floating cursor!!! orz maybe i'll wait 1 year or 2 to change to ipad pro.

I would love to have the hoover, I get the iPad M1 probably in August 2022, and even i would love to get the new one M2 for the same price, I didn't have the possibility to make it since nobody would be traveling to the us until a year later. So I prioritize my productivity (I mostly sketch on the iPad) over the hoover feature... But i still want it so bad!!! haha

Using iPad is one of the most miserable experiences I ever had. Transitioning to Surface Pro has not been a walk in the park due to their stylus being woefully inadequate to the Wacom Pro and even the Apple Pencil. But I can work and have my work sync up with my PC and Mobile Studio.

I have an iPad Pro 11” for using Procreate. Rn I’m thinking about getting an 24” pen display to have more space for drawing landscapes etc or learning blender. Does anyone have some experience using a tablet along with a pen display? Is there a good synergy between both devices? I still want to use the iPad because I love procreate, but sometimes it feels a bit limiting in terms of space for landscape drawings.

    • @jngarrettart
      @jngarrettart Год назад +4

I would do some research before you buy a pen display. Things change, but to date, I’ve yet to see any external pen tablet, basic or with a screen, that could connect and work on an iPad at all. Most pen displays require a driver to be installed before they will work with a computer, but you can’t install a driver on an iPad. Blender also does not run on an iPad, but you could look into something like Nomad Sculpt and see if that would work for your needs.
If using Procreate is the main priority, one option to consider is to connect/mirror your iPad to a regular external monitor, which would at least show your existing screen at a larger size. You still wouldn’t be physically drawing on a larger space, but you’d have a second, larger view of that space. Turn on Procreate’s reference window too so you have a full view of your entire canvas no matter how zoomed in you are working. While not as large as a 24” display, you might also find you prefer an iPad 12.9. It was too big for me - I find the 11 to be the sweet spot myself - but you might feel differently. If you have an Apple Store or Best Buy near you, you might see if there are some display models in the store you can try out (a lot of these stores have display iPads with Procreate installed).
If you are specifically set on learning Blender or having a huge drawing surface, you may want to look into expanding your digital creation “toolbox” with a Mac or Windows computer + a pen or display tablet. Procreate is iPad exclusive, but you could research additional drawing software for the computer if you wanted to work with a bigger setup.
There’s a lot of options out there. I’d just make sure you know what things are a priority to you and then research what tech or combination of tech fits your use case best. My own workflow is extremely iPad-centric, especially when it comes to drawing, and I have a laptop and external monitor for certain specific tasks, but for some people, a traditional computer is their main thing and an iPad may be more of a companion in that case.

Davinci used to be the only free video editor that didn't crash constantly. Now Davinci crashes way too regularly, but Blender (which has had a lot of work done to it) is finally stable and reliable. Blender will edit any old video, it doesn't have to be an animation generated within Blender.

Do you typically draw tethered to a desk or on the go? To me that was the biggest difference and what ultimately made me return my 12.9" for a smaller model. The larger size is cumbersome and heavy and didn't make sense for my workflow.

@@mashotaarts8609 Surprisingly I did not miss the larger screen! It does provide a significantly bigger surface to work with and definitely has more of a wow factor but I don't work on huge, super intricate pieces so for me, having the mobility felt a lot better.
I rarely work at a desk when it comes to digital art so I was finding it daunting to pick up this large device and haul it around. With the smaller device, it is super convenient and I can edit and draw on the go, on my lap, etc. I know I will not purchase the larger size again but I really think it depends on how you work.

    • @FriendlySeal
      @FriendlySeal Год назад

It depends on your workflow. I have the 2018 11" ipad Pro and I find it to be very good and not limiting. The only time I think about upgrading is when it starts to lag if I am working with many complex layers in ProCreate. Having said that, I am personally holding out for an iPad Pro with a better screen before I upgrade because none of the new features have really captured me. So go with whichever one is on sale in my opinion, the differences between the two are minimal.

So, basically, no thanks Apple! 😂
Nothing is really worth the money and pain.
Coolest thing is changing brush size on hover but other apps like infinite painter, art studio pro etc have that covered better for ages!
Procreate was the first thing I bought on ipad. Truthfully, I bought the ipad for procreate because of the Hype and all.
But realistically, it is overrated to be honest.
Iartbook is a free app and does 90% of the stuff procreate does.
Best thing about the ipad apps is that the apps are cheap.
You don't have to pay every month.
Procreate upgrade is free forever, i think 🤔.
Worst thing about ipad is the file management system.
It feels like designed by a red tape guy!
    It is totally counter intuitive.
Thanks Brad cowboy for the hard work.
Truthfully, there is no one like you.
